According to election monitoring body –  Campaign for Free and Fair Elections (CaFFE) the victim identified as Chamila Ranasinghe, a resident of Maggona had been shot in the head twice near the Maggona junction this evening at around 6.30 pm. He had been lighting firecrackers to celebrate the announcement of former Health Minister Maithripala Sirisena as the common candidate.

Ranasinghe who is in critical condition has been transferred to the Colombo National Hospital.

The group who had shot Ranasinghe, has been identified as supporters of Minister Abeygunawardhana who is popular known in the area as ‘Raththaran’ and they had been actively involved in the election campaigning activities of Abeygunawardena’s brother recently.

After shooting Ranasinghe, they had also destroyed some cutouts of former Fisheries Minister Rajitha Senarathne who joined the common opposition movement today in support of Sirisena’s candidacy.

CaFFE notes that residents in the area had expressed their disappointmentovert the Police inaction concerning the violence as the Beruwala OIC is a staunch supporter of Minister Abeygunawardhana.

The thuggery, intimidation, and murders begin. This regime is desperate not to lose their lucrative positions, they will KILL to win, and they have trained people, armed with weapons, to do it all. I think international monitors will be a good idea.

I want to throw up – VOMIT – when I see MR’s face on posters! We must have a CIVIL DISOBEDIENCE CAMPAIGN and rip off the ugly posters of Rajapaksa that are POLLUTING THE CITY and roads all over Lanka..

University students should rip off the posters of Mahinda Rajapakse – the illegal Presidential Candidate who has plastered the roads with his posters using PUBLIC FUNDS. Premature elections are a huge waste of PUBLIC FUNDS to satisfy the GREED of Dictator Jarapassa and his family.

Show your CONTEMPT for Mahinda Jarapassa, the illegal Presidential Candidate and his corruption by shredding and painting graffiti on his posters – CIVIL DISOBEDIENCE to defeat the corrupt regime..

Hi T. George UK, it will certainly not hit the documentary section. Maybe it might hit the comedy section. :)

We all know the Jokers cannot survive without absolute power for what they have done to our Mother Lanka. They rule the Country by intimidation, threat, assault, disappearances and murder. They will do everything to remain in power as they have no where to run. This war against the crazy corrupt family will be more difficult than defeating the LTTE.

Here we go! I presume that it is very appropriate to call this the work of the “Sinhala terrorists” or “southern terrorists” This is not a new phenomenon, They were always there from 1956!!

Hi Namal Perera, yes indeed. In 2009 only 50% of the evil was destroyed leaving the other 50%, which has become 100% of the evil now. Unfortunately these two evils kept each other in check before 2009, now this menace remains without a challenger.

It is all about Minister Rohitha Abeygunawardena so why have CT used someone else’s picture? Is CT trying to tell its readers something? :)

      Paul

Maybe CT doesn’t like his face, usual suspect. Let him prove his innocence, need alibi.

The time has come for all his supporters to blame him for everything that happened in this island. Wipe clean their conscientiousness and get on with life as if nothing had ever happened.

I hear ardent LTTE supporters are now blaming for everything that went wrong in their Tamil Eelam war.

Picture is actually redundant, we all know who is behind it and supporting it,I think Junior officers of Police are not bought by the Rajapakse family only the senior Officers. The junior officers should disobey illegal orders of the Senior Officers, for their sake and their children sake, if not for the country sake.

Nobody needs to tell anything to anyone . everybody knows that it is MARA/GORA DUO who has brought this murder culture to Sri Lanka and all their henchmen indulge in murder with impunity.

Provided the Rajapaksa family does not commit wholesale electoral fraud, there is a good chance that Maithripala Sirisena will win, since he will be backed by a strong alliance of Chandrika, Ranil, Sobitha Thero and others. This alliance will invite the TNA to join. But, after Maithripala Sirisena wins, all promises of finding a political solution to the Tamil-Sinhala ethnic conflict will be forgotten – just as during the past 66 years since the time the British handed over power to the Sinhalese in 1948.

Whatever the outcome of this election, there will be terrible tension and widespread violence post election. If the Rajapaksa family loses, in their fury, they will order the Sinhala military to attack Tamil civilians. Also, Gota will very likely launch a military coup, on the pretext of controlling violence and protecting the Sinhala Buddhist state from the LTTE and Tamil diaspora.

      Indran,
      I think you are correct.
Whoever wins, there will be a bloodbath, without witnesses, as happened during the last days of the war.
The military dictatorship will not forgive those who voted for Sirisena.
The PTA will be doubly enforced with a vengeance.

How can the executive presidency, and the 18th Amendment be cancelled without a two-thirds majority – that too, within a hundred days?

This incident shows how the regime will conduct itself up to and after the elections. Win or lose the Rajapaksas will take revenge on those who opposed them with the help of the military and the police.

Its time we all stood up to his thuggery .10 years is too long in life time to suffer like this . Lets do this for the sake of our children and the next generation. Violence is finally the looser see all over the world. Guddfi , Sadham Hussain …. So many others… Our leaders will also follow the path of destruction..

Get back all the money robbed by Rajapaksha family. Most are invested in foreign countries. They owned hotels, islands, shopping complex and many accounts in Swiss banks. Same time abolish fake law degree given to son and nationalize all assets of Basil, Gota and three un-cultured sons and some corruptive Ministers. More than 1000 girls raped and killed by Mahinda alone and drug and alcoholism’s fathers are these three brothers.

@Shankar, good one but unfortunately only the opposition will be running in this race……………for their life that is.

Why is the election? Why there was fire works?

Because Ranil already lost? Even without an election?

They made an example out of Sarath Fonseka. They are vindictive, vicious, people. They will try ever trick in their corrupt book, to win this election. The opposition must unite and not give up. They are going to be verbally attacked, threatened, blackmailed, and even physically harmed, by these scoundrels. There is nothing so evil as a Rajapaksa who fears losing power. Gota will go berserk.

It is sad that already there has been a victim of this struggle to keep power. This poor man’s family will never get justice for the senseless killing.

“They are going to be verbally attacked, threatened, blackmailed, and even physically harmed,”

some might even get a hot iron rod up their arse.

Some may be thrown into the sea by the helicopters purchased from russia after the war was over.

some might have a pipe with barbed wire inside it inserted into their anus and then the pipe only slowly taken out leaving the barbed wire inside. Then the barbed wire slowly pulled out.

some might have nails whacked into their skulls as in matale grave.

Some women may be repeatedly raped and a soda bottle shoved into the..

This is a bhudhist country. Bhuddhists have the comfort of knowing that there is no god and therefore no chance of retribution from almighty.

This forum is in desperate need of the intellectual brilliance of Tsunamisekera and the other fellows (“Abhaya” etc) who give us the benefit of their thuttu-dekay English all the time.
Where are they hiding? Will they please come out?

Please do not write any facts which will pull back any supporters who work hard to remove MR & CO. The fact about no sighalese government will solve tamils issue is an outdated theory , the situation now is different because the big brothers are watching from UN, UK, US etc.Even india has a duty to resolve tamils issue because they created LTTE which leads to the death of millions of tamil civilians and many indian fishermen. Please do not write any discoraging comments/facts , lets remove MR and move forward.

CT this photo is frightening. Can someone remind gota to take his pills.I complained earlier also to CT about this photo when the next door girl of 6 years ran screaming out of my house saying that the boogey man is here. Now CT has put it again and enlarged it too.

what i mean is is CT,don’t get me wrong, you are quite correct to put his photograph because this man was shot because the perpetrators know that the beruwela OIC is gota’s man,but why don’t you delve a bit and get a nice photo of him when he was on his honeymoon, not one like this where he a decorated soldier is suffering form Post Traumatic Stress Disorder{PTSD)and deserted to the US leaving his good mate at that time, poor fonseka to fight on and end up as the army commander who finished the LTTE after a forty year career, but of course not a word of these in “Gota’s war” which he fought single handedly while fonseka was washing dishes in the army canteen and was rewarded with 5 star welikada.

As usual all above comments have sidestepped the story of the UNP supporter or for that matter any party support shot at in Payagala and debating absolute rubbish. This is the problem with Sri Lanka – the so called mature voter!!!

I hope the Rajapakses win again because they will not give up power without gratuitous violence and it will be the innocent poor who will get hurt. I love Sri Lanka much too much for that. If as shown the norm is to shoot for lighting fire crackers, I don’t want to risk it.

Where is our great commentator Dr. Sumanasekeram? His body guards are missing as well such as Abhaya, Fatshitma Fuckushima……etc. Probably they are at the ticketing office booking their flights.

I do not know the relevance of CT putting Gota’s picture in this peice. There is no evidence to suggest that Gota was implicated in this crime.

It is true, Gota is part and parcel of the criminal enterprise called the Rajapaksa mafia, but in this instance having his picture attached to this article is somewhat cheeky to say the least.

Leave CT alone. Gotabaya is the best looking Rajapakse and I like to see him often.
