Vasu, A Man Of Your Caliber Needs Not Fear The Thunder

By Barbara Seneviratne –

Barbara Seneviratne

Minister of National Language and Social Integration, leader of the Democratic Left Front, Vasudeva Nanayakkara who is an Attorney at Law himself who had dedicated his life since 1970 to active left wing revolutionary politics delivered a speech at the debate on the 11th January 2013 which gave the impression that he is suffering from fatty degeneration of conscience.

I am sorry that I have to say this, I just cannot imagine that you of all at this stage of one’s life taking into consideration the long years you had dedicated to the left movement and the trade union movement with stalwarts like Dr.N.M. Perera, Dr Colvin R. de Silva, Leslie Goonawardena, Dr.S.A. Wickramasinghe,  Pieter Keuneman, M.G. Mendis and Robert Gunawardena for merely to survive few more years of a luscious life could betray the general masses.

You were looked upon as one who does not indulge in politicking or compromising his principles and earned a nick name as “Firebrand”. All because you were a fearless champion of the rights of the minorities and had been beaten, jailed and forced underground due to your political activism. But with what you have done the proud good old nick name you were once known bestowed with for standing up for the down trodden masses will never be known.

I can remember you once attempted to run-away with the Mace which was the symbol of Parliamentary Authority during the UNP regime in 1989 when the House was debating an amendment moved by the government to the Agrarian Research Ordinance. All because then UNP government wanted to hurry its passage through parliament unfairly.
In November 1976, you also played a similar drama in the old Parliament by bringing a floral wreath after the killing Weerasuriya a student leader of the Peradeniya University.

Where are your conscience and convictions you stood for? Or did you ever have any at all?
What you have done since of late is to make it easy to the likes of Mervyn Silva to be the future rulers and to bring this country to a state of moral decay.

In fact I felt sorry that a staunched politician, a militant could fall a prey to words such as “You go down alone or go down with me ” could decide that betrayal is far better than upholding ones principles. Please remember that you have already gone down deep below and your resurrection as a true son of this soil is far fetched.

We all are aware that the impeachment of the CJ was brought about by politicians who pursue money, positions, black money and corruption. This country has given immense intelligence and skills but no sense of public duty, discipline or dedication. We lack sense of fairness.

The impeachment has robbed our Constitutional rights. One should not forget that the Constitution is not to enable politicians to play their unending game of power but to hold the country and her people together.

My sincere wish is that you will have the courage to rectify this damage. A man of your caliber needs not fear the thunder.

I have mentioned in most of my comments that the SL Intelligentsia is to
blame for the rise of this Regime. Even lately the BASL/FUTA and its
allied branches form a base part of this.
In the case of Vasu, his heroic stunts are a study for a Psychologist.
A useful member for the Regimes hidden agenda and has been allocated a
Ministry to allude to this in its long-term schemes. In his dotage he is behaving normal!

People are such bad judges of character that no sooner they support a politician whole heartedly, during the election time, they soon start complaining about him. But the clues were there, even before the election, and you just didn’t care to look at them.

For instance, if a politician were to steal money intended for helping people faced with a deadly disaster, one did not have to be a rocket scientist to figure out that that person is not going to make a “affectionate father” soon after the election. But people do believe this. And they vote for such a guy. Then, when he and his brothers start milking the people for all they’ve got, all through legal means now, the poor SOBs start complaining.

The “Radical Socialists” are no different. All their idealistic talk was just a way for them to get into power. People who believed they were sincere are equally foolish. There are those who do a work for a living and those who seek to ride others for their subsistence. Politicians are the latter kind no matter which way you slice it. For a large part the whole government sector is full of riders. Thank goodness for our women who’ve volunteered to slave in the Middle East, all these freeloaders can subsist in Sri Lanka. This, in fact, is the Sinhala Buddhist Culture that we are so proud of.

I always doubted the genuineness of the leftists. When they are in the University they are the fierce critics of American Imperialism and Capitalism. Their darlings are Communism, Marxism and Socialism. They are the forefront in organizing strikes in universities, work places. They behave as if they would sacrifice their lives for sake of safeguarding other people’s Rights. But majority of them completely change their actions when they get positions in the government or private sector companies… After that they become part of the capitalist system willingly and start ‘exploiting the masses’ as they termed it before. Some of these people becomes politicians and continue the same firebrand politics so long as they are in the opposition. But it is when they get into the governing party or Ministerial positions; we can see their true colours. Who will ever thought Wimal Weeravansa, former JVP fighter and Spokesman would become one of the strongest members of the most corrupt and dictatorial government, Sri Lanka ever had. Same way Vasu, DEW, Gunesekera, Prof Carlo Fonseka, and many more who preached the corruption of capitalism and values of socialism, all become born again people under Rajapakse government. They have sacrificed their beliefs and policies for various bribes in form of ministerial positions and lucrative deals for their kith and kin.
Perhaps Dr. Carlo Fonseka should write an article on psychology- how a man could go in to such low levels by sacrificing values and beliefs he had for years for temporally gains and pleasures. I believe this phenomenon is not confined to leftists. It is the human nature. A sincere human being, who would not bow down to large scale bribes, is almost impossible to find in our part of the world. A possible reason could be that majority of the people in third world countries are highly ignorant and forget things easily. Therefore it is no problem for any corrupt politician to change the policies overnight and still go to public and defend as if nothing has happened. On the other hand in Western Countries, it is difficult to do the same thing. Corrupt Politicians would be scrutinized regularly by Media, which is relatively free and public who cannot be fooled easily. In our country, unfortunately Politicians have mastered the art of fooling and deceiving public. They can do any undemocratic act and use the media under them to ‘convince ‘and brainwash the ordinary people to believe their story. This vicious cycle of corruption and deceiving people would continue until someone like Lee Kuan yew takes power in our country and change the system.

Vasu’s capitulation is proof even those with decades of reputation for principled politics in this country can easily be seduced by the temptation of the trappings of office. The coming of Consumerism and the free market has made such men/women more vulnerable.
NM, Colvin and Company were caught in camera sheepishly forced to carry a tray of flowers in Kandy prior to this but that was, arguably,
strategy on the part of the Trotsykites to capture the apparatus of political power on the Leninist theory “the end justifies the means”

The cunning MR knows this all too well and works on the basis there is a price for everyone. Ethics and Morals have no role in the degenerate world of characterless politics in our land today. The possible bulwark would have been an established and committed religious order.
But in the Lankan scene this too is contaminated with political ambition, material cravings of instant riches and other temptations of weakened flesh. A society lead by spiritless and debased men is a certain recipe for doom.

NM,Colvin and others also had a price.Colvin and NM who identified themselves as Liberals, drafted welcomed and implemented the 1972 constitution. Not only that they implemented that to the letter. They were the fore bearers to the chaos that still reign in this country. They were the ancestors of the present day extremists and megalomaniacs.Remember the May day 1970, they shouted DUDLEYGE BADE MASALAWADE. Definitely a racial connotation.Just like the UNP, the SLFP, and the other parties with no exception the left too ruined this country.

      Senguttuvan says:

“Vasu’s capitulation is proof even those with decades of reputation for principled politics”

      I hear that there is another principle position;

“If you can’t beat them, join them”.

or you could say; “Birds of a feather flock together”.

As Sri Lankan politicians I think they can hold different mutually exclusive political positions all at the same time.

What is your comment on their 64 positions all at same time?

I have no idea what has happened to Vasu. Beyond my understanding. It is a shame that he is collaberating with this corrupt regime no matter what.

I didnt have much idea about Vasudeva until the 1982 referendum when some of us tried to argue with him and his supporters that they should urge people to vote against the referendum proposal, not to boycott it. His stand then was still a few steps behind that of another opposition politician, SLFP Youth Organiser Basil Rajapakse. Basil didnt beat about the bush but simply crossed over and spoke on platforms in support of JR’s call to extend the existing parliament for another 6 years without a General Election. Vasu took a more roundabout route to be in at the kill of democracy. It would be interesting to plot it on a graph.

We lost the respect we had for Vasu on the day he voted for the impeachment.Hi is no longer a leftist but an opportunist.

It is indeed a shame Vasu is now badly tainted by his association with the corrupt Rajapassa family. Do not forget Vasu also voted for the biggest mistake in Sri Lanka’s recent history. The notorious 18th amendment. Unbelievable. It is with heartache Sri Lanka takes note of these facts. After all Vasu has spent a lifetime fighting for the downtrodden in our society. I really have n idea what has happened to him.

Ben, Vasu also shouted against the 2000 constitutional proposal. That was the day I realized that he was a brainless eel.Opposing that was O.K.if gave any reason. None were given. He is the price back biter. He is the man with the hidden dagger.

One of the problems with the political parties is that there is no retirement age. So we end up with a senile bunch of old folk in their dotage who think they know everything. Until these people are sent home the younger politicians even in their fifties will remain as immature golayas twiddling their thumbs and playing follow the leader.

The only thing worse that the behaviour of an unmentionable like Vaasideva is the opinions of the Barbara Seneviratnes that he is capable of better!
Vaasideva Nanayakkkara is a true heir to the original sell-outs, dear lady, those you mentioned as being in some imaginary pantheon of glory – NM, Colvin, etc. They were active participants in laying the foundation for repression and the most blatant of corruption that began with Mrs. B.

Vasu is for SALE! So it does not matter, considering his age he has only a short run left to live, and during this time he can be bought by the highest bidder. He has no fundamentals left in him. So Barbara if you think by writing this article he is going to change you are wrong. Alternatively you should start collecting 10 cts from every Sri Lankan living in Sri Lanka and abroad, then you may have enough money to buy him. What a shame state of affairs Vasu!

Oh .Vasu, my one time our Hero ………….

You started diging your own grave in 2005 joining your long standing friend Mahinda. Since then you compromised all your principled stands. I remind you that Dr. Colvin had reportedly told former Balapitiya MP Luxman de Silva in 64 before joining C.P. de Silva camp, ‘ Luxman do not take political decisions based on personal relationships”. It is applicable to you too. I have also heard that NM had told you before giving you Kiriella seat in 70 instead of Avissawella, ” I will give you Kiriella as you can easily win. All our former candidates of LSSP left the Left Camp after winning Kiriella. I hope you will not do so.”. You betrayed NM too, but we thought you did that to build up a more militant Left.

Vasu, January 10th you really died while digging the last bit of the grave and I take this opportunity to put a ‘floral wreath’ to you as one time of my life, you were my political Hero.

It is very sad that you lost a colourful death……………….RIP

    Sahadevan

P.S- Still people commomerate NM, Colvin, Lesli, Bernad, Wicks, Peter. But no one will commomerate you Vasu.

      Sahadevan says:

Your report of Vasu’s political death is greatly exaggerated. He is in rehab now.

He used to weave Bonapartism into every discussion he had with his admirers back in the 70’s and 80s. Does he still explain what UNP SLFP Bonapartism is?

I never understood then and I don’t understand it now.

Bonapartism according to Merriam Webster Dictionary:

1: support of the French emperors Napoleon I, Napoleon III, or their dynasty

2: a political movement associated chiefly with authoritarian rule usually by a military leader ostensibly supported by a popular mandate.

Did he tell us then his life was his message.

Fire Brand Vasu is no more. He died in 2005.

It is his senility that has shown the correct picture of the man. His correct position was that he was a humbug living on the subscriptions of poor workers and the left-oriented NGOs. When then President Chandrika Kumaranatunga’s government tabled a resolution in the Parliament to amend the constitution and abolish the all powerful Presidency, Vasu was a vociferous opponent of the proposed amendment to the constitution. Ranil Wickremasinghe, with sinister motives, allocated UNP time for Vasu to continue with his normally shameless speech and encouraged hypocrits like Azwar burn a copy of the proposed amendment to the constitution within the chambers of the Parliament. If that amendment to the constitution was then passed in the Parliament, this country would not have faced a crisis sitution of this nature, which has brought this country to the brink of isolation from the democratic world.

I agree we need a psychologist to examine Vasu; It is unbelievable to see him behave like that; though understandable when we see how vulnerable people are; looking at what the so called ‘leftists’ doing right at the moment in general.

Once upon a time Vasu was respected by the general public, now he is no better than Mervin or Weerawanshe, only trying to fool the nation sitting on the wrong side, why is that ? is that because he is becoming very dishonest or.. all because of the perks that he is enjoying ?

SUDDENLY COMRADE ??????? MR COLVIN R DE SILVA CAME TO THE SCENE AND BLASTED IN A BIG VOICE.

“”WHO ARE YOU TO DO THIS, WE ARE THE SAMGI PERAMUNA.
SO DONOT TRY TO DESTROY THAT,””
    SO ON……

SENIORS WERE LOOKING FOR VASI DEVA NANAYKKARA.
BUT HE DID NOT COME TO THE RESCUE OF SENIOR STUDENTS.

I Know the Vasu well regarded him since he was a genuine politician. But I completely disappointed the way he behaved in the parliament on impeachment day. I call him you are the politician who dedicated more than 40 years to build up your image as a politician and tarnished the same within few minutes. What we can expect from others. Why could not you stand at least like DEW and Rajiw.

I congratulate Barbara Seneviratne for opening this can of worms known as “VASU”. The comments that follow speak volumes for the deceiving character of this miserable opportunistic hypocrit. In the 1960’s, I studied with Vasu at Aquinas and at Law College, and the last time I saw him was in the 1970’s when he was organizing University students for the JVP insurrection when he misled and misguided tens of thousands of our poor youth into their graves. The bogus, pompous games he always played in politics has been for his own aggrandizement. Even today, he unashamedly prostitutes for MR Regime only to fill his pockets. One suggested that he should be called “Vasi”. I think it is more appropriate to call him “Vesa” or “Vesi”. Barbara’s writing as well as commentators factual notes prove what a FRAUD Vasu has been all his life. Our stupid poor people fell for his beard and the fire talk. I am sure he knows that not all people can be fooled, and he knows that he has a place in hell.

Sri Lanka will continue to move forward, if you say it is going backward then you do not know what is politics in the strategic location of the Indian Ocean, but listen to the foreigners who are the masters of dividing and fooling others. I have an obligation to support the President as a Sri Lankan intellectual. I do not take arms against fellow countrymen. I do not join with the foreigners to undermine fellow countrymen either. I work with fellow countrymen to change or develop the country. I lead others by my intellectuality and good deeds. Let’s ask ourselves one important question. What is the value of the Democracy and Commonwealth? The Chinese do not believe in democracy, nor part of the Commonwealth, but they are advancing much faster than us. The Westerners ruled and ripped off our country for more than 440 years, but they never done anything to eliminate the caste systems, gender inequality, and racial, language and religious discriminations. Because they knew it will continue to eat us and keep us under them forever. Furthermore, India the largest democratic country by its population created the Tamil armed groups to keep Sri Lanka under its wings. However, India also understood that letting the Tamil armed groups grow beyond its control would be detrimental to India. This is the reason Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi reached a very good political solution for the Tamils’ issues in Sri Lanka under the Indo-Sri Lanka agreement. Unfortunately the LTTE did not see what Rajiv Gandhi did, because of the Tamil diaspora. The 2002 ceasefire agreement between the LTTE and the Sri Lankan government also broken by the LTTE. A reasonable political minded person knows that Prabhakaran would not have fought against India without the help of the Westerners through the Tamil diaspora. And also Prabhakaran would not have broken the 2002 ceasefire agreement with the Sri Lankan government without the help of the Westerners through the diaspora. If you can answer the following questions you will know who have most of the Tamils’ and Sinhalese’s blood on their hands. Who have been deliberately stopping the peace agreements? Who have been guiding the diaspora? Who have been fuelling “hate and bitterness” among the Tamils and Sinhalese? Who have been facilitating the funding to the LTTE, even though they had everything within their reach to stop money get transferred from the diaspora to the LTTE. The answer is Western political minds through their intelligence network. Think about the lost lives since 1987, think about the suffering since 1987, think about the lost opportunities to develop the country and people’s lives. The Westerners created bitter divisions among the Tamils, Sinhalese, and the Indians through the diaspora. The Westerners act like peace makers, but they are not. They talk about democracy and human rights to fool others, in order to turn people against their own governments to destabilise the developing countries. The truth is, the Westerners have a vital interest to divide every community and every country to rule others. There is a most ugliest face underneath their white faces, it is pure evil. Not many people have the ability to see their real face, but few of us do through our hard work and sacrifices. Ask Julian Assange and Bradley Manning, they will tell you more about the Westerners evil side. Julian Assange and Bradley Manning are Westerners, but they exposed the truth and ended up in a prison in the US and stuck inside an embassy in London, UK. Some Sri Lankans and some other Asians are backing the Westerners for their own self-centred lifestyle, they don’t care about their own people, or their motherland.

The removal of the CJ is not something new in the world, it happens in the world, including in the United States. However, some eliments may use this opportunity to bring chaos into the country, in order to achieve their ulterior motives. Remember, few eliments were fuelling the civil war and benefited by the war, but not the Tamils or Sinhalese. We must not let that happen again. The president appointed the CJ, the 2/3 of the parliament wanted her to leave the office. If I was the CJ, I would have resigned once the parliament decided to remove me from the office. Taking this matter to the UN is not advisable. It is a new beginning for the CJ. The Chief Justice Shirani Bandaranayake has a huge potential. She has a lot to give for the country. She must get involved in politics and bring new ideas to the table. Lets people decide whether she is worthy or not. She must not go to the UN, but go to her people and put her ideas forward, in order to develop the country. She must not go to the enemies who divide others, invade others’ countries and kill millions of people to keep themselves on top. Do not go to the devil to get justice. I encourage every Sri Lankan to bring forth good ideas to the table to develop the country. If you want to get involved in politics to help the foreigners then you will fail utterly as Sarath Fonseka. Mr Fonseka recently reiterated that he needs outside help to topple the government. I am extremely disappointed by his statement. I urge every Lankan to stop listening to the enemies who divide us, they use every opportunity to bring chaos into the country to rule us. We must understand what is missing, then find a solution within us, looking outside will create more problem and chaos than a solution. The country has been fighting for thirty years, people are free from fighting for only three years. Just wait for few more years, be patient, you all went through the bloody war for thirty years for nothing. The Sri Lankans have been suffering from the independence, due to lack of smart leadership. As intellectuals, we are sharing our ideas with the leaders to make them act wisely, it is a process it will take time. I know very well about the parliament members, can we change those MP’s mindset overnight? I am also well aware that Rajapaksa brothers are dominating the country. Does it really matter if Rajapaksa brothers are developing the country? The extremely talented Sri Lankans will continue to direct the country leaders into the right path. The President does not have an answer for everything, but he has the ability to deal with the external threats better than any other leader, this is extremely important to the country, because Sri Lanka is in a strategic location, the past, the present and the future superpowers want to influence the country. Therefore, Lets approach matters very pragmatically for sake of the innocent people who have died due to the bloody war. The Tamils are in the bottom, because of their disunity. I never seen such a unity among the Tamils as I seen among the Rajapaksa brothers. May be we need such a close family ties to overcome the Westerners’ and Indians’ divide and conquer strategy. The Indians and the Westerners can easily fool the Tamils, because of their disunity. People like us who are enlightened and committed to bring a change can’t do anything. I am isolated by the Western governments. The propaganda against me are shocking, even my family members, relatives, and friends believe the Westerners more than me. Due to my writing the Westerners do not even allow me to get a job, they did not allow me to sell my house for a profit, because they knew the money will be used to expose their evil deeds. They are keeping me in financial hardship and perfect isolation by their dirty propaganda. My fellow Tamils are keeping silence, they gave millions of dollars to the LTTE, but nobody would support me to have a website to expose the Westerners evil deeds. The Tamils are prepared to undermine their fellow Tamils, in order to cater their own self-centered lifestyles. We all know how the Tamil armed groups fought and destroyed each other, the TNA has its own agenda, the TGTE has its own agenda, Global Tamil Forum has its own agenda. They all concern about being leaders, they are not concern about the Tamils. If the TNA is leading the Tamils, then why TGTE leader call himself a Prime Minister for the Tamils? I am ashamed to call myself a Tamil. I really don’t believe the Westerners could have isolated me this much if I am a Chinese, because the Chinese are very close to each other, this is the reason the West could not invade China, or could not stop China overtaking the United States economically.

The Westerners ruled and ripped off the Indian Subcontinent for more than 440 years, but they never done anything to eliminate the caste systems, gender inequality, and racial, language and religious discriminations. Four hundred years is very long time, at least 10-12 generations. The Westerners could have done a lot to the Indian Subcontinent, but they deliberately done little to keep the Asians under them. The Westerners have a lot to talk about the Indian Subcontinent’s failure than China’s communism, but they won’t talk about it, because it will highlight their deliberate misleading to keep the Asians under them, plus the Indian Subcontinent is not a threat to their dominant power, but China. “English are to blame for India’s backwardness” published by the Dominion Post, written by Philip Collins, on page B5, Dated January 5, 2013. The Dominion Post is one of the major newspapers in New Zealand. Not all the Westerners are naive or blind, there are people like Philip Collins who sees the Westerners’ evil side. The Indian Subcontinent has enough intellectuals to develop the Subcontinent, but the system won’t allow the intellectuals to lead. Therefore, the intellectuals leave the Subcontinent and develop the Western Countries. This system was developed by the Westerners, in order to keep the Indian Subcontinent poor and weak. We fought against the Westerners to have our freedom, but we still trust them, listen to them and run our political system according to them. This is a huge disaster. The Indians are too scared to change the manufacturing sector, because they don’t want another East India Company. However, they are happy to run a political system recommended by the Westerners. The Chinese are really smart, because they have chosen a political system to suits their culture and ideology. The Chinese did not choose a political system recommended by their enemies. We must stop listening and trusting our enemies. We must develop a system according to our culture and ideology, like the Chinese did, otherwise the Indian Subcontinent will be struggling forever. We must depart from the old system and bring some changes. Being part of the Commonwealth is only helping us to stay behind. Time for us to move forward, our policies are not helping the Indian Subcontinent to move forward as China. Am I recommending a communist system? Not at all, but we need some changes, if we come up with something good, the Indians may even consider our system in the future. We must find a way to lift the whole Indian Subcontinent. India can’t try something new, because it is too big. In India 627 million people do not have access to toilets, the Indian leaders do not even provide basic needs to their own people. The Indian leaders believe in God and democracy, they are vegetarians too, but love their bribes. Sri Lanka is a small country, and its leaders are committed to their people more than the Indian leaders, at least the Sri Lankan leaders provide access to toilets to their people. As Sri Lankans we must try something new and help the whole Indian Subcontinent, otherwise we will be betraying our future generations.

Peter-Excellent piece. I think Barbara had good intentions when she wrote the piece and some Commentators do have good intentions. However, majority of them are misguided or trying to get their personal animosities settled….

Anyways..as I understand Barbara, DLF central committee voted to vote for the impeachment and the Ratnapura district committee (where Vasu is elected to the parliament) has decided to vote for the impeachment. I further understand Vasu wanted to take the stand with DEW and Tissa (abstain from voting) but was forced to change it with the DLF central committee and the Ratnapura district committee decisions.

Best comment was from Sam…”Fire brand Vasu is no more he died in 2005″…Yes I think I agree with Sam he had to change his style of politics…guess because so little people approved his policies which was evident from the votes he received in the elections he faced from about 1998 to 2005 (including a presidential election) I doubt anyone who is commenting here even voted. May be Barbara did!!!
