Oxford Union Video: Islam Is A Peaceful Religion – Mehdi Hasan

Muslim journalist Mehdi Hasan, political editor of the Huffington Post, warns Anne-Marie Waters that her “astonishing claims” might endanger her future as a Labour Party candidate, but assured her “don’t worry, the BNP will take you”.

Hasan asks why, if Islam is “responsible for killing,” such a tiny percentage of believers actually participate in violence. He asks the audience if they really believe that 1.6 billion people are all “followers, promoters and believers in a religion of violence”.

Hasan urges them not to “fuel the arguments of the phobes and bigots and legitimise hate”, but to “trust the Muslims that you know and that you hear.”

Wimal Modawansa and Rev Gonasiri Thero were special invitees to the Oxford Debate on Religion. Five minutes into Mehdi Hasans speech, the perplexed and confused Modawansa turned round to Rev Gonasiri and asked ” Ooo Mokada Bang Kiyanne?” Rev Gonasiri Thero pulled his saffron robe around his bare shoulder, shifted uneasily in his seat and replied ” Aney, Mama Ahagenna Hitiya Nay Bung. Ara Suddhu Badu Dihaaa Balaagena Hitiye”.

Mehdi Hasan should at once visit SL. Should be shuttled to BBS HQ at Thunmulla Junction for a chat with Dilantha. After which he could take on BBS God Father Gota, in a public debate. If Gota has the required capacity to handle the onslaught.

Yes Gota has more than the required capacity. He will hang him until Mehdi Hasan is dead.

He once promised to hang Sarath Fonseka.

No doubt Gota has the clout on the ground in SL. To do as he pleases.

Whether he would be able handle the intellectual dimension of Mehdi Hasan, in a public debate, with dignity is another matter. LOL!

Dilantha has no sufficient knowledge to debate with Mehdi Hasan. I know Dilantha’s background very well. He was one of the Student of former Soviet Union.

The fact is that Islam as it is practiced today is a backward and oppressive religion for the most part – particularly for women of the community – who increasingly are forced to cover themselves from head to toe – because Muslim MEN cannot control their vile lust and behaviour and do not trust their brothers to treat their women right! Women suffer because men cannot CONTROL themselves! This is the OPPOSITE of justice!
Women who are forced to wear bhurka suffer sunlight and vitamine D deficiency, have health problems and most important cannot move freely and live active, productive and full lives in the public sphere..
This is such a joke that has gone on for centuries in the religion – why does not someone put and end to this joke of covering up women because MEN 1) do not behave properly; 2) Men do not trust their fellow men to behave right with women. It is incredibly pathetic that half the population has to cover itself up, so that the other half *MEN) can behave like barbarians. Buddhism which promotes gender equality and respects women is a far better religion although Balu Sena and Buddhism in Lanka today is the pits because it has been militarized by the Rajapakse regime.

The ugly men are the problem.

Let the Muslim women who are expected/forced to cover their faces by ugly men, should deny their men folks access to their body below their neck.

There are variety of designs for medieval body armour available for Muslim women to chose from. I can supply these desings on request. This could definitely protect them from their husbands’ lust and from other stupid and ugly men.

However I still believe if ever there was a problem with their Burqa it is their problem and rest of the non Muslims need not worry too much about it.

Its Muslim women’s choice and not yours nor mine.

I am happy with my Amude.

          Ammena and Native Vedda,

“The ugly men are the problem.”

Who are the Ugly men? From Destiny Disrupted by Tamim Ansary

          1. The ugly men appeared about 200 years after Islam to control women and natural philosophy. They said revelation is above reason, all you need is in the revelation, like the current Wahhabis.

          2. They were the Clerics, Ulema and Mullah. They were men, and wanted to keep their hegemony.

          3. The ugly men were tribals, who wanted to keep their tribal “customs”

          4. They were against reason and Muslim Philosophers, just like in Wahhabi Arabia.

          5. The ugly men, Ulema fought the philosophers and Mutzalites.

          6. Finally the rulers sided with the Ulema, because the Ulema the ugly men controlled the people.

So we have it, the Ulema tells the men, they follow like sheet and women are “protected” or “oppressed”.

          http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/6240926-destiny-disrupted

In Destiny Disrupted, Tamim Ansary tells the rich story of world history as the Islamic world saw it, from the time of Mohammed to the fall of the Ottoman Empire and beyond. He clarifies why our civilizations grew up oblivious to each other, what happened when they intersected, and how the Islamic world was affected by its slow recognition that Europe—a place it long perceived as primitive and disorganized—had somehow hijacked destiny.

Most of the killings in the world were because Islam and Chrtistianity.

Material Science began as opposition to the christian claim of that Every thing is created or did by ALMIGHTY’s action.

Christianity Created so many Crusade Wars as well as Islam. Both these religions used and are using aggressive tactics to convert. that is why there are lot of religion based in AFRICA.

Even peaceful societies like Sri Lanka, burma etc. need political buddhism because of these religions’s exploitative activities.

do u think Tamim Ansari is a muslim who obey quran. he just a muslim because of his name. i saw some pictures while he was drinking which strictly prohibited in Islam, then y should we care about a person who Talk about islamic world since he neglects our religion…

i knw u r neutral but before talkng something else u should know about that. whabism or salafism or fundamentalism is not a reason why our mothers and sister wear this. this is a strict obligation in islam. check this verse…

And tell the believing women to lower their gaze and be modest, and to display of their adornment only that which is apparent, and to draw their veils over their bosoms, and not to reveal their adornment save to their own husbands or fathers or husbands’ fathers, or their sons or their husbands’ sons, or their brothers or their brothers’ sons or sisters’ sons, or their women, or their slaves, or male attendants who lack vigour, or children who know naught of women’s nakedness. And let them not stamp their feet so as to reveal what they hide of their adornment. And turn unto Allah together, O believers, in order that ye may succeed (An-Nur 24:31.

This verse shows clearly that Allah has obliged women to wear hijab. Hijab is the proper Islamic dress code, which is primarily intended to safeguard the modesty, dignity and honor of men and women. By wearing Hijab, women protect themselves from any lustful gaze or act that may expose them to temptation or harassment of any kind. On the other hand, it protects men from indulgence in vices and unlawful acts.

Hijab does not only refer to head cover, but to the whole dressing of a woman. This means that there are certain requirements for a woman’s dress to be Islamic: It must cover the whole body.
It must not be tight or transparent. It must not delineate the parts of the body, especially those parts that are sexually attractive.

so dont pull wahhabies or slafies or fundamentalism in to hijam, it is all woman obligation and dont post some idiots post here..

              zaith,

so dont pull wahhabies or slafies or fundamentalism in to hijam, it is all woman obligation and dont post some idiots post here.”

Zaith, you are putting idiot post, to defend your Wahhabi, Salafi and Fundamentalist positions advanced by your Mullahs, Ulema and Clerics without sufficient support. There is no need to follow the Wahhabi Ulema’s interpretation. This is what Martin Luther did with the Catholic Church. Challenged the misinterpretation of the scriptures. Just Google Martin Luther.

              http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hijab

According to the Encyclopedia of Islam and the Muslim World, modesty in the Qur’an concerns both men’s and women’s gaze, gait, garments, and genitalia.”[6] Although the Qur’an stresses modesty, it does not specifically require women to keep their heads or faces covered. In fact, the Qur’an never explicitly uses the term hijab in reference to body veiling in any context, instead utilizing the words khimār (خمار) and jilbāb (جلباب), not hijab. Hijab or Hejab refers to The Rules of covering up. It never references the specific item or items of clothing used to cover up.

              Historical context

The term hijab is never used in the Qur’an to describe an article of clothing.[30] The only verses in the Qur’an that specifically reference women’s clothing, are those promoting modesty, instructing women to guard their private parts and throw a scarf over their bosoms in the presence of men.[30] The contemporary understanding of the hijab dates back to Hadith when the “verse of the hijab” descended upon the community in 627 C.E.[31] Now documented in Sura 33: 53 the verse states, “And when you ask [his wives] for something, ask them from behind a partition. That is purer for your hearts and their hearts”.[32] This verse, however, was not addressed to women in general, but exclusively to Muhammad’s wives.

As Muhammad’s influence increased, he entertained more and more visitors in the mosque, which was then his home. Often, these visitors stayed the night only feet away from his wives’ apartments. It is commonly understood that this verse was intentioned to protect his wives from these strangers.[33] During Muhammad’s lifetime no other women in the Ummah (Muslim community) observed the hijab. Instead, the term for donning the veil, darabat al-hijab, was used interchangeably with “becoming Muhammad’s wife”.[34] As stated by Muslim Scholar Reza Aslan, “The veil was neither compulsory nor widely adopted until generations after Muhammad’s death, when a large body of male scriptural and legal scholars began using their religious and political authority to regain the dominance they had lost in society as a result of the Prophet’s egalitarian reforms”.[33] Bloom and Blair also write that the Qur’an does not require women to wear veils; rather, it was a social habit picked up with the expansion of Islam. In fact, since it was impractical for working women to wear veils, “A veiled woman silently announced that her husband was rich enough to keep her idle.”[35]

              Zaith,

Know the facts and the background. Use the brain that was given to by Almighty Allah, and do not use the standard Wahhabi defense. Remember Galileo?

“do u think Tamim Ansari is a muslim who obey quran. he just a muslim because of his name. i saw some pictures while he was drinking which strictly prohibited in Islam, then y should we care about a person who Talk about islamic world since he neglects our religion…”

              1. Tamin Ansary was a Muslim and is a Muslim. Read the whole book and references cited therein.

              2. We all know the Wahhabis define a Muslim on their own convoluted terms, the Satanic Definition, as agents of Satan. That is why the the Wahhabis call the other Muslims, non-Muslims, and kill them. This happens in Pakistan and other places. The data supports that the Wahhabi are true agents of the Devil,Satan, (It is like BBS calling themselves Buddhists, in fact, when they are actually followers of Mara, called Maraism.)

              3. Wahhabism is the curse of the Muslims, just BBS and Maraism is the curse of the Buddhists.

              4. Give up your Satan inspired, British supported convoluted Wahhbism and Salafism and become a Sufi.

              Amarasiri…..

whats your problem if I call banana as plantain…..?

im alway listen who talks and interprets islam through Quran and Sunnah. so before posting these kind of wikipedia Stuffs read and learn quran and hadeeth, i will accept, because i study quran since my childhood. now i come to ma point…. there is two major source in Islam, one is Quran and another is Hadeeth, through the hadeeth Prophet showed us what is in the quran and what quran requires us to do…

quran command our mothers and sisters wear modesty (u have also quoted it). through the prophet Muhammad’s life we could get to know how those women dressed..

              1. A’isha radi Allahu anha used to say: “When (the Verse): ‘They should draw their veils over their necks and bosoms,’ was revealed, (the ladies) cut their waist sheets at the edges and covered their faces with the cut pieces.” (Hadith – Sahih Bukhari 6:282)
              2. Narrated ‘A’isha radi Allahu anha who said, “The riders would pass us while we were with the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam). When they got close to us, we would draw our outer cloak from our heads over our faces. When they passed by, we would uncover our faces.” (Hadith – Recorded by Ahmad, Abu Dawud and ibn Majah

these hadeeths clearly says how wife of the prophet dressed. she close her face with piece of cloth and cover her whole body….

O Prophet! Say to your wives, your daughters, and the women of the believers that: they should let down upon themselves their JALABIB ( al-Ahzab, verse 59)

Al-Munjid, for instance, defines jilbab as “the shirt or a wide dress—القميص أو الثوب الواسع.” While al-Turayhi, in Majma‘u ’l-Bahrayn, defines it as “a wide dress, wider than the scarf and shorter than a robe, that a woman puts upon her head and lets it down on her bosom…”

this verse clearly define Mslimah should wear Jilbab that what actually in modern day they call as HIJAB…

whats your problem if I call banana as plantain…..? ha?

so u r call the people who follow Prophet Muhammed as wahhabies or solafies or fundamentalist or whatever word u want….

you too here in CT talk about fundamentals of load budhdh and critisising BBS… If we do actually what prophet do or what he command us or wot he allow us to do, u call us as those kind of shit bla bla… but u can talk the fundamentals ha? dont u feel shame to be bias….?

Prophet Muhammad Tells u cant enter the haeven, unless u all follow me step by step.. allow us to do what Prophet told us.. dont come up with answers from some stupid web liek wiki….

when ive done ma research ma lecture cut all the citation wich i got from the wiki and told me anyone can post anything in wiki…..:/ hope u got what i mean by that

            Mr Mehdi Hassan

“Oxford Union Video: Islam Is A Peaceful Religion – Mehdi Hasan”

            CORRECTION:

Islam WAS s peaceful RELIGION UNTIL THE UGLY MEN TOOK OVER.

            1. Then women lost their rights given to them by Islam.

2, Philosophers lost their tight to learn Philosophy along with their theology or was greatly discouraged and marginalized, the way the women were marginalized.

            3. Revelation was elevated above reason, whether it was valid or not, even though the Quran expects people to seek knowledge.

            4. The Ulema, the Mullah and Clerics took over and they claimed that only they can interpret the Quran, and all the new Ulema or Scholars had to learn all the rulings of the previous scholars, whether they were correct or not. So, errors got perpetuated.

            5. These developments lead to the decline of Islamic Philosophy, reason, and the decline of Islamic science.

So the Ulema, Mullah and Cleric hegemony is the cause for the loss of rights of women and the marginalization of philosophers.

Even today, the Wahhabi Saudi Arabian do not want students to learn philosophy, as it sees as a threat to the Wahhabi Clerical hegemony.

Amarasiri, you are an egalitarian, who have not learned the religions from the correct sources. Don’t you think it is dangerous to quote something from WIKIPEDIA to emphasize your interpretations of religions and practices.

We know that you are a WIKIWORM and have been attracted by MARTIN LUTHER’s life and sayings. You have always measured the religions from contemporary people who may or may not practice the religion according to the correct teachings. This is where you go wrong. If you do not have time for this, then at least you need to see the people who practice the teachings correctly.

Your quoting that “Women and philosophers have lost their rights in Islam” should be studied in the light of Quran and Sunnah. Not from WIKIPEDIA where any content can be edited to suit individual agenda. The Quran or Sunnah cannot.

Your point number 3, where you say “revelation (Quran) is elevated above reason and Quran expects people to seek knowledge “. Yes, to understand and agree that it was, is and will be in harmony with Science past, present and future.

In your point No. 4, it is correct for a normal muslim to go to a learned Ulema to get explanation on something he doesn’t understand after all the Quran was revealed in Arabic and not in English or any other language. It is laughable to see the BBS Gnanasara trying to teach about dress code women in Quran by looking at sinhala translation.

But, I do agree that in the present time there are many forces even within Islam acting their own. There are label muslims. Do not search for details of these muslims in Wikipedia, if you want to learn Islam. Go to the correct people. Ask people like Dr. Zakir Naik of India.

You can criticize some thing incomplete. Not ISLAM.

In addition women can be divorced without giving a reason. Alimony is not paid to them, unlike for Buddhists and Christians.
Women do not sign the marriage registration forms. Men can divorce without a reason, women has to prove reasons. Muslim courts are all male dominated.

I agree with you as to why should women cover and suffer when the men are the culprits or suspected culprits.
Buddhism also does not treat women with equality- She can’t become a Buddha. But they are a little better than how Islam treats women.
Real Buddhism is good, but what has happened to Buddhism is that it is being gradually taken over by the extremists, like bbs, jhu, ravaya etc.

          @ Zareena farook,
R u made? Marriage registration is the government rules not the religious rules. Islam is allowing the divorce but there should be valid reason. Who said muslim courts are all male dominated? You can go to court and file the case………no difference you will the divorce.

            0

Alan – you are wrong. A muslim male can divorce without a reason. Check from Muslim courts. If the court wants it can only try and negotiate and after that if a man insists, a divorce must be given

Zaneera, dont know where you learnt your religion and law but you are completely wrong, as per the constitution of Sri Lanka and Islam a women has the right to divorce without giving a reason (which I personally dont’ think any human (man/women) would do in the right frame of mind ).

Divorce without a reason anyhow seems to be the dumbest thing I ever heard be it be a man’s right or women’s right.

              Zareena farook,

I mean the government court as per constitution you will get divorce.
if men doesn’t want the women why should she live with him? Should agree for divorce, and marry another man. Islam allows this. Women have their own rights…..Women should be protected by laws.

However, it has it’s roots in the Racist Monk Mahanama Myths of Mahawansa Fame-Notoriety, about 1,400 years ago.

i dont know whether you are a muslim or u namely muslim for commenting purpose. if u r a muslim i pity on u for ur knowledge in islam….

allah clear say this life is temporary and be prepared for the life after death by doing allah’s command. which makes u to think islamic code of dress is not Allah’s word? ha?

in Quran, He (God) specifically addresses women when He asks them not to show off their adornment, except that which is apparent, and draw their veils over their bodies(Quran 24:30-31.

God requires Muslim women to dress modestly and to wear the hijab in public and in the presence of men who are not close relatives. our mothers and sisters wear this dress not only to be far from strangers, they do because they follow, they obey Allah’s words, that why we call em muslimah, and respect em like our own blood realtioship. not because of ugly man like u have in ur family….

Look at Yousuf Ali and Mohamed Asad Translations of 24: 30-31.

and draw their veils over their BOSOMS, not bodies as you claim, in the Salafi, Wahabbi and Fundamentalist translation.

Did the Wahhabi Devil, Satan ask you to do that so that the Wahhabi and Taliban and Deobandi can keep perpetuate their tribal hegemony by the Ulema, Mullah and Clerics?

The Burka/Hijab is a clothing that has liberated women from being looked up as sex toys which is what happens in the materialistic world of today where every woman is judged by the size of her breasts or the shortness of her skirt.Islam is for Muslim men and women and the women who cover up dont need their men to tell them so.

Remember Human evolved and depended on Sunlight for getting certain nutrients, before Religion, Mulahs and Ulema Showed up.

The Earth still goes around the Sun, irrespective of the scriptures claims.

          http://wikiislam.net/wiki/Health_Effects_of_Islamic_Dress

          Islamic Dress and Health

Since almost all the daily intake of Vitamin D is from sunlight, exposure there is significant concern for women who wear the burqa or “full hijab”. This style of dress, leaving only a very small portion of skin around the eyes exposed, greatly reduces the surface area of the body which sunlight is exposed to and hence reduces the amount of Vitamin D synthesized. Such low rates of Vitamin D production will quickly exhaust the bodies excess emergency stores of Vitamin D contained in the fat and the person will likely go into a deficient state.

Due to this reason, serious vitamin D deficiency is wide-spread in many Muslim majority countries. A study performed by doctors at King Fahd University Hospital in Saudi Arabia, showed that out of all 52 women tested, all had seriously deficient levels of Vitamin D and were at risk of many serious health problems, despite living in one of the sunniest places on the planet.[10] Furthermore, in a study undertaken in Jordan, 83.3% of women wearing the most covering style of Islamic dresses were found to be deficient in summer time. This is rather striking when compared to the fact only 18.2% of Jordanian men studied were found to be deficient.[11] Jordan, like Saudi Arabia, holds the distinction of being one of the sunniest places on the planet, so the effect of wearing the burqa on Vitamin D levels and health is profound.

This guy is all worked up and making all the same mistakes as he accuses the opposition of!

Islam always has been very Oppressive to more than 50 percent of the population — WOMEN.
I am sorry! Islam is and was the most barbaric religion: Especially when we measure ALL religions by how well or ill they treat their women – who are ONLY physically weaker than men.
Men cover women up because they don’t trust themselves to no sexually harass and abuse women..

Lokka set up a standard to assess your conclusions. Let us then judge the different cultures against your standard and we will decide whether Islam is barbaric or not.

        @ Lokka,
Go and see your villages how Buddhist fathers beat their wives after consuming alcohol. There are thousands of cases….how women have been treated by Buddhist fathers. Many Buddhist women are being treated as slaves in Sri Lanka. Mostly they have been used as prostitutes all over island. Do you think that when women posting in naked it is upgrade for women. The woman have been used as slaves everywhere. To sell the toilet paper they put a half naked pic of the women.
Do you allow you mother or sister to go and do the prostitution???? Women should be protected, they are not the sex slaves…….my dear friend.
I don’t think Islam is barbaric religion…unless Buddhism, Hinduism etc. Islam is the only religion which talks about women rights. I don’t see any other religion which talks about women rights. You see in Sri Lanka, muslim families are living very peacefully. But i don’t say other families are in trouble….Because we respect our culture too. I had been living several years in europe and i did not see there any good family life. Sex is fully free women is like a dog there………….everybody use them.
Do you need the same culture in SRI LANKA too?

Please stop assuming that Muslim women are ill-treated. First check what is happening in your own society before looking into others. Being a Muslim woman who dons the Niqab, I assure you that I am not oppressed or ill-treated in anyway. There is no one who is forcing me to do anything. If you want to know the extent to which Islam has liberated and elevated the status of women-folk, please read the history before the advent of Islam. And then about the rights given to women by Islam. This will, God willing, change your mind regarding this topic unless your biased. I shall give you few examples, women got the right to vote in America in 1913, we Muslim women on the other hand, got it 1400 years back. We got the right to own property 1400 years back, the right to divorce and so on. Before it women were consider less than human. Don’t judge a religion by seeing how a few misguided believers practice it. Go back to it’s scriptures and see what it has to say. May peace upon you.

        Correction:
        Women:

If you look at Islamic History, the position of Women and that of Natural Philosophy changed after about 200 years of Islam. They quote, incorrectly, Chapter 24:30-31, as bodies.
(Look at Yousuf Ali and Mohamed Asad Translations of 24: 30-31.)
        (not bodies).

        Natural Philosophers, Reason and Revelation:

The Ulema and Mullah could not argue their way out by reason with the Natural philosophers, and finally, because they controlled the people, in collusion with the people, made Revelation Supreme over reason, whether it was correct or not.

So, the brightest Islamic scholars who were learning Greek Philosophy, Natural Science, Astronomy, Physics and Al Chemi (Chemistry) gradually stopped learning natural philosophy (science), and they only learned Theology.

This was the beginning of he Islamic science and the end of Women’s freedom.

From Islamic History, Destiny Disrupted by Tamim Ansary, a Muslim, whose lineage apparently comes from the Helpers of Medina, the Ansar and who comes from a long line of Theologians.

I know Islam forbids the consumption of swine meat. What has the cow got to do with Buddhism. It is our lord Buddha’s previous religion – Hinduism that forbids the slaughter of cows. If we have the slightest respect for the Hindu religion, we would not have slaughtered so many believers of Hinduism.

I can understand if some of our own in robes talk about Donkeys as they have made our belief look an ass in front of others. Buddhism is the true religion of peace and there is no room for any kind of violence, be it for cows or asses.

        Upali,

” It is our lord Buddha’s previous religion – Hinduism that forbids the slaughter of cows. If we have the slightest respect for the Hindu religion, we would not have slaughtered so many believers of Hinduism.”

        Well said.

Let me add as to what a Jew or Christian may say

It is “our” (Christian) Lord Jesus previous religion – Judaism that forbids the slaughter of people. “Thou Shall not kill”. If we (Christians)have the slightest respect for the Judaism religion, we would not have slaughtered so many believers of Judaism from the 5th Century, Christian Crusades, European Pogroms, Spanish Inquisition all the way to the Nazi Holocaust.

So the Sinhala Buddhists in Sri Lanka and the Christians in Europe have something in common in their philosophy and theology.

Very evocative, very sincere and very true. The crux of the argument is that Islam is as peaceful and tolerant a religion as Buddhism. Yet it, like Buddhism (in the local context) is hijacked by irrational, politicized radical elements like Bin Laden and the BBS fanatics who give these great religions all the wrong credentials. The fact is that all in all, a great majority of the Muslims and Buddhists in Lanka, condemn and decry any violence in the name of religion and are very tolerant people who believe that religion should be a private matter, and a fundamental human right. Unfortunately, politicians with dictatorial and other ulterior motives of their own use religion to achieve their goals by legitimizing hatred and creating rifts by magnifying and demonizing benign difference between religions. The rot started with Bandaranayakkas disastrous language policy and after a period of lull has raised its ugly head again in the form of bans on dress codes and eating habits of people. Sad. Very sad indeed.

Nalanda University was alleged to have been burnt by an disgruntled invading army general who happened to be a Muslim. When this happened Taxila, another seat of Buddhist learning was still preserved by the Muslims. Can we say that the Jaffna library was burnt down by the Buddhists? We cannot because no sane Buddhist would have permitted that crime, but it was carried out by some soldiers who happen to be Buddhists. Similarly, if you ask anyone who killed six million Jews during the second war world, the reply would be Hitler and not Christians or not even Germans (though it was German army who carried out the orders). Similarly, the Bamiyan statue was destroyed by the Taleban who are a menace first to the Muslims than to others. The Bamiyan statue has been there for over two thousand years. Why did not the earlier generation of Muslims destroy it? Therefore, “Muslims” did not deliberately burn down the Nalanda University. It was alleged to have been carried out by some not disciplined soldiers. Islam condemns any form of violence. If we keep going back to history, followers of every religion can bring forth previous crimes committed by followers of other religion though those other religions may not have sanctioned it. Let us look forward. Work together for a better, peaceful future should be the aim and objective in our life.

Wrong Baba, wrong. Jaffna University was NOT burned by soldiers who happened to be buddhists. It was burned by thugs organised by Gamini Dissanayaka and his good friend, Cyril Matthew who took a trainload of thugs from down south to Jaffna for the holy incineration. Please get your facts right and dont distort history.

Kamal, I agree with you. People without good sense commit many crimes and it is unwise to blame race, culture, or religion. Within Buddhist history too there are many such instances. In the 3rd century King Voharikatissa burned down the library of the Abhayagiri Viharaya, a temple which had previously been favoured by Kings over the Mahavihara, because he favoured the latter. A century later King Mahasen destroyed the Mahavira, and not only that, he expropriated all the temple lands as well making the monks flee the kingdom. These are all ‘Buddhist’ kings! So you cannot blame religions for what their so called adherents do. This is what many sensible Buddhist writers (and bloggers) are trying to point out, and also writers from other religions such as you, but those that are ignorant and hate-filled are difficult to convince.

Gosh, i thought they set fire to it last week as a follow up to Buddhagaya attack!
Luckily this happened many moons ago I am told. Good on you JK, keep count, for if you do you will be consumed with anger.

But Gauthama Buddha said, “anger is like holding on to a hot coal and hoping the other guy will burn”

There is an even better story that amply describes your situation

One evening an old Cherokee told his grandson about a battle that goes on inside people.
He said, “My son, the battle is between two “wolves” inside us all.
One is Evil. It is anger, envy, jealousy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment,
inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego.
The other is Good. It is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion and faith.”
The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather:
      “Which wolf wins?”
The old Cherokee simply replied, “The one you choose to feed.”

      Dhaksha

Agree with you on his eloquence. But being a Muslim myself, I noticed certain fundamental errors of fact which he managed to gloss over with his eloquence and escape-velocity speed of deliverance. Some of these are:

Islam was NOT born in 7th Century AD as he purports. Islam was born the day God created Adam. So, it is as old as humanity itself.

He admits that 6 million Jews were massacred during the holocaust. This figure has always been widely debated as a gross exaggeration. Mehdi Hassan is surely aware of this but he cleverly uses it to win his arguments over the greater issue being debated.

He attempts to sanitize Sharia Laws as being judicious, fair, practical and not-to-be feared. However, its interpretation and application in the current context of modernity and sociological evolution leave a lot to be desired for even a majority of Muslim followers, let alone followers of other faiths.

He correctly points out that Islam is a religion of peace and tolerance. However, he is also aware of the widespread sectarian hatred between the Sunni and Shia Muslims all over the world but chose not to expalin this sad anomaly. The Middle East,Pakistan and Indonesia are teeming hotbeds of violence involving Islamic sectarian rivals. Mehdi Hassan could have at least used this fact to support his greater argument that ultimately, it is not Islam that is evil but its fanatical and bigoted followers.

Islam decries Darwins Theory of Evolution. Muslims firmly believe in the Special Creation Doctrine according to which the universe and all life in it originated in its present form by unconditional fiat or divine decree. So, the answer to your question would be a firm “No” as there is no evolutionery connect between man and ape. Also, religion was ordained for mankind and not for apes. Good day to you.

Sloan, the question of who attacked first is not in contention but the barbaric slaughter of the Muslims. Christian writers describe how they had to wade in ankle deep amounts of blood. Old men, women and children all slaughtered. I have previously quoted the Islamic ethics of war which forbade not only the categories mentioned above but even livestock and farm produce not to be destroyed.

A brilliant exposition by Mehdi but it is also worthwhile to listen to the debater on the other side (Anne-Marie Waters and co.) for they had some legitimate points, it’s simply not fair to publish just one side and objectively decide if it’s a religion of peace or not. The truth is even though only a fraction of 1.6 billion engage in violence, it is still the most violence prone religion even though the itself Quran itself is far less violent than the old and new testament. To say it’s not the Quran, it’s the flawed Muslim individual is to be intellectually dishonest. Can Islam be a religion of peace, perhaps. Is it on NOW, depending on how one chooses to measure ‘peace’, i don’t think so. I found this to be a far more insightful debate for those that might be interested in the topic and please, let us all just be honest with the facts.

    Mr. Mehdi Hassan,

“Hasan asks why, if Islam is “responsible for killing,” such a tiny percentage of believers actually participate in violence. He asks the audience if they really believe that 1.6 billion people are all “followers, promoters and believers in a religion of violence”.

Yes, I have seen the multi-nation Gallop Poll, and the sample was large enough to be statistically valid.

    1. 93% of Muslims are Against the Terrorist Suicide Bombings on religious grounds, as Islam forbids suicide.

    2. 7% for it, for political reasons, especially for imperialist and colonial reasons, not for religious reasons.

    3. There was a program in the National Public Radio and and a CIA adviser in Afghanistan reported that the Al Queda could not find support for suicide in Islam, and therefore picked some from the Bible.

    4. Al Queda also apparently threw in the 72 Virgins as a marketing tool. There was no support in the Quran.

The 72 Virgins Are A Lie (And Other Things You Probably Didn’t Know About Islam)

Here is the Muslim Gallup Poll Summary:

      http://muslimmatters.org/2008/03/01/93-worlds-muslims-moderates-gallup-poll-didnt-believe-us-first-time-round/

The Great Gallup informs us that:

93% of the Muslim population is “moderate.”

Only 7% of the Muslim population is “radical.”

Being a religious Muslim doesn’t make you a radical.

“Radicals” are politically extreme, not necessarily religiously extreme; and give political reasons, not religious reasons, for condoning terrorism.

“Radicals” are better educated, have better jobs, and are more hopeful about the future than are “moderates”; they also support democracy/ believe in democracy more than the “moderates” do, but are just cynical about getting it themselves.

Muslims don’t want secularism or theocracy, but a democracy based on religious values.

Muslims don’t hate the West, they just don’t want Western ways imposed on them.

        2. Egypt: Same, even though Morsi came to power in Egypt, because of the anti Mubarak Vote, and the people did not want a Mubarak Crony to come t power.

        3. People know that they can’r eat Sharia. Only economic development and technology will feed, clothe and shelter the people.

Also should answer why African Muslims are so violent against African Christians. Why Saudi Arabia is so hostile to other religions. Why Afghanistan Muslims destroyed Two Bamiyan buddhas which was their country’s heritage. Why MAldive Island muslims destroyed all the buddhist Statues in their Museum. they destroyed their country;s heritage because of religious extremism. Why Indonesian Muslims attacked tourists ?. Why Egyptian muslims attack Coptic church christians.

Saudi Arabian muslims think that their house maids are slaves and because of that they have the right to rape those house maids.

So calculate and see what percentage of muslims are violent ?

Sri Lankan maids in the Arab countries are not raped by the Arabs. The Arabs have their keeps in countries like Lebonan, Morocco – very desirable ones.

Do you know who has consensual sex with the Sri Lankan maids ? Mostly, Sri Lankan drivers and houseboys. When things go wrong, they say to their husbands that they got raped.

Do you really think our women who go to the Middle East are so desirable, that the Arabs just cannot control themselves ?

It is not altogether a correct point of view. Some house maids who do not get thumped by the house mater do go for the driver but in most houses Baba’s themselves prefer to let go at the maid rather than another costly wife! Any way they are sex animals and I know they buy condomes by the cartons may be for the sons as well!

So only the Arab men are sex starved. Atleast they don’t rape their daughters unlike the Sri Lankan men.

When you get out of the prison, please do make a visit to the Sarvodhya HQ. You can meet the teenage mothers who were raped by their fathers !!

      @ Jim Softly,
Stop sending house maids to KSA. And you don’t know the reality. You are basically anti Islamic element who has no knowledge about Islam.
One thing remember Islam will be protected for ever………
If we decided to through all the religious scriptures/ books in the sea to make united world….still Islam will exist….Because millions of Muslims have memorized the Quran. So….it will be protected until end of this world?
When this world will end according to the Load Buddha’s teachings??? Do you know??

Knowing full well that “Saudi Arabian muslims think that their house maids are slaves”, why the hell the Sri Lankan men send their wives to Medieval Kingdoms. Is it because the men could rape their daughters at home?

      Lazy, stupid,…………..men.

Well as long as buth gottas like you are around women will have to go slave themselves.

Why don’t you acknowledge that we Sri Lankan men are shameless and that we work our women to the bone?

Our three biggest foreign exchange earner are sustained by women. Our garment industry is sustained by Juki girls. Our foreign exchanged is earned by housemaids and our Tea greenbacks from the sweat and toil of female coolies.

All the while we squander away their earnings in wasteful ways including gambling, drink and womanizing

And then we add insult to injury by slandering them and call them names, in true Lankan style instead of taking responsibility for their safety, dignity and well being.

Exactly, well said Nabil. Women who go to any country as maids already know the risks they are taking, being isolated from friends and family, they run the risk of getting sexually assaulted and cannot deny this fact. Men are not saints, and having having helpless women around, is like taking fire close to petrol. It is safe to presume that these women are prepared to undergo the risk simply for the lure of more money, to put their house in order, whereas we know how their men folk squander it all up thru booze, drugs, gambling and even frolicking with another mistress.

The book ‘Holy Koran’ professes peace more than war. The problem is, those who practice Islam do not do as the book says but interpret it in ways that totally distort what is meant in the holy book mainly for their personal benefit and convenience. Their present aim is not to practice Islam as it is preached but to make this whole world one ‘Islamic world’ by a massive breeding drive. As for the rest of the world to feel it is a peaceful religion those who practice it have to show the world atleast that they treat their women folk reasonably with compassion. Without that, whatever the holy book says is irrelevant.
I can not imagin what it is like to be covered head to toe in black in the deset, tropical heat while the men folk wear white garbs and head covers.
Mehdi speaks a lot about the tiny minority of those who commit violence and takes pains show that the vast majority do not approve of this and therefore the majority denounce violence and it is a peaceful religion.
In today’s context most of those who commit violence and subjected to violence are muslims.

Still his point holds. Those Muslims who take up violence are a speck. Not the majority. If the number of BBS,RB,JHU and the hordes of the extremist Burmese are totaled against their population, Percentage wise you will end up with a larger percent Buddhists being extremists.

So do the Tamil Saivaites, Sinhala/Buddhists. Buddhists, Christians,Jews and all other mad men, it has always been the men who interpreted the teachings.

Why do you single out Islam?

Don’t forget the atrocities of Buddhist Japanese.

      Nak,

You lament and worry about Muslim women being covered from head to toe, yet you forget that you too are covered from head to toe as you write, that is if you are someone used to western attire! :)

You wear a shirt, tie, long pants, socks, vest etc etc. You expose only your palms. That too in sweltering heat, under humid dusty conditions. You don’t complain, do you?

Now the conditions under which women cover up fully are not any different is it? Neither men who follow western life styles nor Muslim women who follow Islamic teachings expose themselves in the heat you speak of!

What you are cannot cover up and stands exposed is the extreme bigotry of those who comment here!

For me moderate Islam is a good way of live in peace and harmony, but the problem is mostly it is practiced in a unnecessarily fundamentalist way.that’s why the followers faces resistance from the all other religions through out the world .Inf act whatever says it have spread in most of the world with the power of sword eg most parts of afghan(hindu, buddhist) india ,most of the crusade war areas.(even in srilanka nowadays see some three wheel taxi run by Muslims have a sayingthere is no god by allah with a picture of a sword underneath.

another reason for the hate is where ever the muslims are in majority and in power the oppress other religions and people and compel others by all means to convert to islam .for eg the hindus and sikths even christians of pakistan ,afghan bangaladesh, indonesia(java and bali) are in force to be converted by forcibly abducting girls, breaking place of others worships ,taking them prisoners as they spoke of koran
or allah etc and etc.even in srilanka during 1990 in kinniya trinco
there was forcible convertion of tamils(they were sanitary laborers)in hundreds by a muslim police officer by saying to save them from army .for evidence read NORTH EASTERN HERALD 1991(By thissanayagam).
not only that see in eravur, kalmunai ,akkaraaipattu most of the muslim
pradesiya saba rulers ignore the tamil areas completly

-mainly their maximum birthrate.by that the other communities who have modest birthrate are in threat in long run (I think the most reason other communities in srilanka ushered is due to it).

-another important reason other societies not like is convertion by marriages. If a sinhala or tamil person marry a muslim person they will be compelled to get converted to islam if not there will be problem.
I know in east some muslim areas where other communities live closerby
where the muslim youths are encouraged to marry others and to convert them to islam.
-these are some of the reasons why muslims sre looked in suspicion.

      Dear Sagar,

I would like to start from where you stopped.

01.”-these are some of the reasons why muslims sre looked in suspicion”.

Like everyone else you are presenting your own assumption as facts. If you care to make inquiries, you will discover that there are many Muslim women who are married to Non Muslim and leading happy married lives. Have you heard any Muslim women going to the police complaining of harassment by family? Can you name one case in Sri Lanka?

      02. “I know in east some muslim areas where other communities live closerby
where the muslim youths are encouraged to marry others and to convert them to islam.”

Like any religion we welcome converts; and we are happy to have them. However we do not have an active “evangelists” and therefore what you are saying is does not happen. In 1983 a large number of Indian Tamils from estates embraced Islam. They found refuge in Muslim villages, they were given land and homes and many volunteered to embrace Islam.

      03. “compel others by all means to convert to islam .for eg the hindus and sikths even christians of pakistan ,afghan bangaladesh, indonesia(java and bali)”

I can give you as many examples as you have where there is a concerted effort to covert Muslims. Christian evangelists were first on the ground with the US Army in Iraq with the bible in one hand and inducements in the other. There are enough stories on Youtube if you have the time to browse

Remember you have a choice; you can either live with your ill-informed ideas about Islam or go out and find out what Islam is all about.

Its up to you to decide if you can rise above others to embrace other races and religions or want to feed your bigotry with more ill-informed rhetoric!

    dear Nabil,
I didn’t mean to insult or throwing mud on Islam. In fact I much respects it’s several positive sides.the integration of the society as one,the ways to help to the poor of the own brotherhood(sakkath ,help in business, loan without interest like) ,marriages without astrology, caste, dowry barriers. most of the muslims are peaceful people .
What I tried to express here are some of my genuine observations. They are evidence based facts.if you want I can give you so many net sites to visit and refer the facts. for example the persecution of hindus by wikipedia ,or the us report on state of religious minorities in pakistan (july 13 2013).or state of religious minorities in indonesia.
By the way about the intermarriages ,what are the religious status of the nonmuslim partners, (mostly they could have been compelled to get convert to Islam
to live with their loved ones).-in majority of cases.
less religious tolerance is the main reason which affects the others who are called by the name of nonbelievers so called ? ‘Kafirs”
how can you tell only allah is the god ,how can you say the christian or hindu gods are not gods. In fact I reject to have any religious status for myself and think that religions are different ways of
social orders to regulate the society by the name of a super power for the good sake.Accept what is rationale and what is good for many of us
Regarding the brotherhoodness why can’t you embrace the whole humanity as brothers and sisters other than only restricting your kindness mostly towards followers of your religion only.

Oh We need no debate for this. Just look at what Quaran says. to Kill, Rape, Cur hands.. and who the idot says it is a peaceful religion.

You see them black as your glasses are black. I wish all the non-muslim brothers & sisters remove their glasses, and study Islam in it’s true form. you will find inner peace and contentment.

    Dear Sagar

I respect your genuine comment, not like blind eyed like Samanthi.
Me too had several confusion in understanding other religions specially islam, same question what you arose over the last comment.
Once I got in to deep I understood, most of them are answered satisfactionally to me,

“State of religious minorities in pakistan (july 13 2013).or state of religious minorities in indonesia”

This happens everywhere in the world it does not meant its promoted by the concepts of any religion, islam came in to power in GULF 1400 years ago still minority Christian and Juwish people are living in Gulf in huge numbers like Lebanon, Egypt, Syria…etc
How the muslim and low cast minorities are affected by extreme Hindu terrorist in India..but its nothing to do with Hinduism..and Christian crusaders destroyed entire gulf..nothing to do with Christianity…Buddist extreminst killing in myanmar nothing to do with Buddism..

“Intermarriages, what are the religious status of the nonmuslim partners, (mostly they could have been compelled to get convert to Islam to live with their loved ones).-in majority of cases”.

Each and every religion has its own limitations and boarders as I understood islam is a social set up of life rather than calling as a religion, I saw there are so many index which proves this, for an example very minute suicide cases in muslims, they care about the family and nabors, they live as bunch in all over the world, and in otherwayaround the one who converts fromn other religion to islam does not have faith on his/her own religion why insist to convert his/her counterpart…instead..if they LOVES each other..

“less religious tolerance is the main reason which affects the others who are called by the name of nonbelievers so called ? ‘Kafirs” and how can you tell only allah is the god ,how can you say the christian or hindu gods are not gods”.

Like Jihad, Kafir is also well misinterpreted word from islam what I understood, Kafir does not meant to all non muslims as per my findings its only means those who intentionally fight against islam only; quran has a chapter it teaches how to deal with nonmuslim there is no any other religious book has a chapter for other believers where it accepts the existence and plurality of other religions.. Same time in all over the quran it calls as brothers and your family members for nonmuslims…

“Regarding the brotherhoodness why can’t you embrace the whole humanity as brothers and sisters other than only restricting your kindness mostly towards followers of your religion only”.
This has answered on above once again, islam by its name itself is a peace, entire quran there are so many evidences its called for brother hood with all human beings, I found a saying by islam’s prophet mohamed, if you want to be true believer your nabour should be satisfied by you; regardless of his religion, otherwise even you cannot be a muslim.

In a nutshell religions are like flowers of different colours and designs in a garden; it adds buty to the garden….its depend on how we see those flowers…

please do not tie a noble faith like Buddhism to monks. monks may mislead you, lord Buddha WON’T. lets say you fight the minorities, at the end of the day where is it going to get you? are you willing to have the blood of innocent people on your hands just because a monk told you to do so? have any of these monks attained enlightenment? Has not lord Buddha prohibited hate, envy and violence? when will you people open your hearts to lord Buddhas teachings instead of the twisted interpretations from monks like gnasara thero? How would killing a pig and throwing it’s carcass into a mosque be a form of protecting Buddhism when in fact a Buddhist is not allowed to kill another living being? the people who did it have in fact gone against Buddhism just to hurt the feelings of muslims. The killing of that innocent pig can in no way be justified. Look to lord Buddha, and not the monks.

Buddhists can kill human being not the animals. That is what we understood from the Buddhist monk like Gnasara tero and politicians like champika ranawaka.

Islam… a peaceful religion? Is this a joke? Its a religion. All religion creates hate and anger. Look at palestine and israel, Look at the conflicts of shia and sunni. All over one god. If god created man.. then WHY SO MANY RELIGIONS. WHY IS EVERY RELIGION CLAIMING THAT THEY ARE RIGHT!? Its the hypocrisy of man kind. Long live free thinking.
