Minister of Finance and Media Mangala Samaraweera has today condemned the attack carried out on Rohingya refugees, yesterday (26) in Mount Lavinia, while they were under the care of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).
“I strongly condemn the attack on Rohingya refugees by thugs in robes,” Mangala Samaraweera said. Minister Samaraweera also urged police to take action against the perpetrators.
He said: “I would like to condemn in the strongest possible terms, the attack against Rohingya refugees – refugees who were under the care of UNHCR, yesterday in Mount Lavinia, by a group of thugs in robes. In fact I condemn these actions not only as the Minister in charge of Media. I am also condemning it as a Buddhist, a Buddhist who is very proud of the fact that Buddhism is a religion of non-violence and compassion.
“In fact these refugees, 30 of them from Myanmar, were rescued at sea by the Sri Lanka Navy in April this year, and they were under the care of the UNHCR, waiting to be resettled elsewhere in a third country, the United States or Canada.
“In fact this is not the first time Sri Lanka has given temporary shelter to such refugees. In fact, way back in 2008, in March 2008, again the Sri Lanka Navy rescued survivors off a boat after they were found adrift in the high seas, and they were kept here until 2012, when these people were resettled in the United States of America.
“Again in 2013, the Sri Lanka Navy rescued two boat loads of Rohingya survivors from a shipwreck in the eastern coast of Sri Lanka; 138 and 32 of them. They too were kept under the care of the UNHCR, until they were settled in Canada and the United States of America in 2014 and in 2015.
“It is a shameful act and every right-minded citizen of this country especially Buddhists must condemn this action by this so called priests and I also urge the police to take the strongest possible action against the perpetrators of these crimes against these innocent refugees.”

Mangala is a sensitive minister.
He has been doing a good job. Unlike earlier at least few ministers in current cabinet are senstive to human issues.
But to me or any other buddhists that repsect real buddhist teachings, just condemning would be not sufficient.

Radical Buddhist monks stormed a United Nations safe house for Rohingya refugees near Sri Lanka’s capital Tuesday and forced authorities to relocate the group, officials said.
Saffron-robed Buddhist monks led a mob that broke down gates and entered the walled multi-storied compound at the Mount Lavinia suburb of Colombo as frightened refugees huddled together in upstairs rooms, a police official said.
Two police were wounded in the incident, which also saw the mob pelt stones at the safe house and trash the ground floor furnishings upon entry.
There were no reports of casualties among the group of refugees, which included 16 children.

aggression and the police who surrendered to the force was despicable for
a police force and especially the ASP was so quick to find fault with the
UNHCR staff just to satisfy the monks and ordered the refugees to be taken
to the station . The police is now free to do their job but they are not ready
yet especially when facing the monks ! Don’t they still know that genuine
monks are not on the streets and only to be found inside the Temples ?
Why does the police become spineless in front of the monks at a crime
scene ? And adding insult to the injury , even the UNHCR staff were ordered
into the police vehicle but none of the thugs who shouted at the police !
The police , instead of trying to disperse and deal with the mob , found it

Can the public expect the police to act independently and impartially

They came to Sri Lanka with expectation and hope that Sri Lanka will protect their lives..They came to Sri Lanka knowing Sri Lanka people are kind enough to give them shelter and protect. Sri Lanka has got a long tradition of protecting victims and needy. sinhalese kings were famous for this kind of humanitarian support and help. In the foot bath of Sinhalese your government gave protection until these people are resettled in a safe country..as you rightly mentioned Buddhist people should not harm any thing in this world event they are not allowed to harm an insect or How could these so called monks try to harm these innocent people who are seeking protection form Sri Lanka.

Two wrongs don’t make a right. It is sad that Sri Lanka may ignore refugees who are genuinely fleeing violence. Sri Lankans fled after the pogrom carried out by UNP thugs in 1983. Many people fled during the war; mostly innocent Tamils. Sinhalese fled or did not come back because of the reign of terror-counterterror during Hon Premedasa’s era. I did not want to return though I was not a refugee. I kept prolonging my graduate education out of fear and was advised by family not to return either. Come on comrades, if we are truly a civilized Buddhist society where does say we can abuse, threaten and attack people seeking shelter? Investigate. If this is part of a human trafficking racket the way Sinhalese and Tamils try to sneak into Australia, then stop it. Is the monk saying the refugees who are Sri Lankan in other nations need to be chased away? Say from Australia ? or Canada? including Sinhalese who work illegally in Italy for example?
But let UNHCR figure out what to do. Fear of terrorism is the bogeyman my President Trump has used to rile people and spread hatred of all Muslims. DO NOT let that happen.
