The Committee to Protect Prisoners’ Rights today revealed that prisoners who protested Angunakolapelessa Prison Superintendent’s conduct and the STF raids in the prison premises were mercilessly beaten by authorities on November 22, 2018.
The organization, addressing a press conference in Colombo this morning, released several videos illustrating how the Police and prison authorities carried out a brutal attack on the protesting prisoners.
The committee also urged the government to initiate an investigation into the assault on the prisoners and penalize those responsible for the attack.
The incident took place under the watch of the “fake government” headed by President Maithripala Sirisena and the fake Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa.
The prisoners carried out the protest atop a tower in the prison premises against the conduct of the Superintendent of the prison and the constant searches carried out by the STF. About 100 prisoners took part in the protest.

Prisoners must enjoy prisoners’ rights, not somebody else’s rights.
Prison authorities have a duty to treat prisoners as prisoners, not letting them to enjoy other citizens’ rights during their prison life to make it the punishment given by the courts.
Rehabilitation should be started at the end of prisoner period unless it may be considered contempt of court as well.

Unfortunately police assault is common in many countries as there’s no proper way of containing violently behaving individuals & groups.
Police assaults may be seen as the development of corporal punishment given to the children by teachers.
Though teachers are thoroughly advised not to do corporal punishment to their innocent children, a large percentage of teachers think it’s a must to bring students to right path.
It’s an irony that some parents too make requests their children’s teachers to beat children to correct.
Domestic violence is another such example that some husbands are permitted to assault their wives.
So it’s clear that there’s an assaulting culture in our society/world that must be dealt with.
The question we have is, in a society where parents beating of their children, teachers beating their students, Husbands beating their wives are tolerated why can’t we tolerate when criminals/IRC men living as prisoners are assaulted.

These prisoners in Sri Lanka’s one and only super luxury prison-resort haven’t protested for food or water.
They have protested against constant searches carried out by STF. Look at that!
Do prisoners think that the Superintendent should be a coward and dance according to their tune?
University students are attacked by Police at almost every protest. I have never seen anybody writing against it.
Having said that, a Police baton charge is internationally accepted coordinated tactic to disperse protesters. In USA, even pepper spray and stun grenades are also used to disperse crowd (oh, please don’t do that here.)

People may have become numb to the body search, or even may enjoy it. But without a reason searching anybody is illegal and harassing. If anybody enjoys repeated body search, they should offer their body for that but should not argue that all prisoners should be subjected to that. What you see is a brief glimpse into what anyone protesting for whatever reason prisoner, civilian anybody can expect under Rajapkshe rule. It happened before it will happen again and again. While the Rajapakshe thugs engage in cruelty every chance they get their supporters cheer them on displaying their nasty sadistic nature. The number of times these acts not just beatings but cold blooded extermination has gone unpunished is staggering. The other side of the coin is those that clutch their proverbial pearls and decide the best action is to do nothing. When forced to take action stall by appointing a committee or some other gimmick hoping for the fuss to dye down. Then business goes on as usual. My conclusion is that Sri Lanka is not a safe place for decent people to live. It is probably why most educated decent people flee the country the first chance they get.
