If you believe that RR’s revelation about MaRa will change the public opinion about him, you are mistaken. Almost everybody already know who MaRa is & he intervenes with each an every organizations – justice system included – on behalf of his family & friends. That is the secret of his loyal base. His loyalists view his behavior not as unethical but as a gift. As a matter fact, it is these type of personal favors most voters expect from their political leaders. The truth is that many of the SLPP activists, including the cabinet members, are there today b’cos of his favoritism. People love when he say with pat on the back, “Don’t worry, I’ll take care of it “. Therefore, instead of feeling bad for being deceived, MaRa’s loyal base would be angry at RR for exposing him. If there will be any challenge to MaRa’s corrupt/unethical behavior, it will be from GoRa himself who, according to some (not me) observers, is trying to have a law-abiding Gvt. But, I believe that MaRa is clever enough to carry on his style of governing without drawing a significant ire from GoRa!

However, RR’s speech may have some impact on independent voters who voted for SLPP just to punish Ranil. This will open up a new opening for Sajith only if he could distance himself & the party from Ranil’s team. I have never forgotten that Ranjan also took up the cause of that innocent, young girl, Rizana Nafeek. One of the few, very few, if not the only MP to be genuinely concerned about her.

The purpose of recording conversations is made clear. Whatever be the contents of the conversation the explanation provided is genuine and has acted according to his own conscience and not for his personal advantage. Never did he hold them for improper motives such as blackmailing people. The embarrassment caused by the secretion of contents was definitely not done by him and that credit should go to him for that. He recognizes implicitly that the records held for posterity contained some material such that had the party knew the conversation was recorded such party would not have spoken in that manner as revealed in the record. Now when the public calls customer care units of establishments an announcement is made that for purposes of ascertaining quality the call is recorded. One therefore wonders whether such a warning was made prior to recording of the conversation. I do not think so. While the set of records reveal the state of affairs in the society in general one wonders whether, in the interests of justice, such recordings without a warning of recording should be admissible in a court of law. The net result of all this is that people would never be “free” in their minds in making a conversation over the phone.

1. You say you were elected to parliament to catch thieves! Do you know that ‘Catching thieves’ is not the kids’ game that we played as kids; it needs to be done through enacting a set of strong and practically enforceable laws that thieves cannot easily challenge in courts? That was your job. Instead, you tried to be the law enforcement authority! In other words, you ran after a thief and the thief snatched your pistol and shot you fatally! Is that correct, and whose fault is that?
2. Every incident needs to be weighed under the circumstances within which it occurs before passing a judgement! That’s why the incidents pertaining to the period prior to 2009 (where SL had a prolonged war against terrorism) is considered different from what is happening today. For instance, you say you went to watch your film ‘One Shot’ with MR and discussed certain things with him etc. People might have approved it at the time; but if MR does the same today, people wouldn’t agree. UNP alleged MR gave a bribe of Rs 500 million to Pirabaharan! People approved it at the time because it was not a gift but a bait! Therefore, you need to learn why ‘Circumstances’ matter specially in Politics!

This is longer than my usual comments, so please bear with me and read till the end. Especially important in view of Ranjan’s speech.
1. The UNP is assiciated with the Senanayakas, the SLFP with the Bandaranayakes. So, the Rajapakses wanted a party associated with their name/dynasty, and that’s the reason for the SLPP. They already have three generations of Rajapakses to carry on with power.
2. The Rajapakses don’t give a shit for the constitution. They will do what they want, anyway they want, to stay in power.
3. Except for a handful of judges, the judiciary will do whatever the Rajapakses will ask them to do.
4. The armed forces and the police are already under the complete control of the Rajapakses.
5. About 80% of the Buddhist monks will do what the Rajapakses order them to do.

I totally agree with the reply by D. P for the comment by Babalth Appu. If this speech of RR to gain any notice the JVP should make a noise on this within and out of parliament. Otherwise , we the wise people of SL will forget about this 30 minutes speech in no time. This is why politicians of this country robbing us and laughing all the way to their Caribbean banks.
If the above speech was done in a democratic parliament other than ours., many heads within both side of the noble house would have rolled. But nothing would happen in our paradise isle. There is much expectation from GR. But he is bound by loyalties. Maybe he is waiting for the big elections around the corner. I am expecting he gets rid of some big names soon after the elections. There was a mention of a Black Horse of Match Fixing fame. This involves an international sports and its body. Hope at least this sports body will request the head of the guy who did the fixing.
