Who Speaks for Rev. Gnanasara?
It is not my intention to defend or accuse Rev. Gnanasara as a person but to consider him as a living phenomenon produced by past and present conditions – the Effect of a Cause.
The comments on this topic can be categorized as follows:
1. Non Buddhist commentators.
2. Buddhists who are shocked by Rev. Gnanasara’s behavior.
3. Non religious people like me, who are not unduly moved by the phenomenon.
Both 1 & 2 are jumping up and down like U 235 nuclei that have absorbed neutrons of the right energy with a considerable possibility of a uncontrollable chain reaction starting.
The Buddhists are doing it due to their Holier than thou attitude and the worry that they may look bad in the eyes of the Westerners and so on.
The non Buddhists are doing it because Rev. Gnanasara is a God sent opportunity to bash up the main religion of the country, perhaps giving them a good chance of dominating everyone in the near future. It is a holy endeavor for them commanded by their God. Even if they fail in their mission, as most likely they would, the promised gains are too high to be ignored.
It is also a red herring for them to divert attention of the masses from the heinous crimes being committed in the name of their religion.
Rev. Gnanasara’s behavior has been outrageous right through but he looks as innocent as a newborn baby compared to those criminals.
There are two major duties that a Buddhist monk is expected to carry out.
1. Spread of the Dhamma peacefully. Protection of Dhamma is implicit in this, for there is no purpose in spreading Dhamma unless it has a chance of surviving and taking root.
2. Strive for the emancipation of oneself.
A monk has to strike a balance between the two. The second is mainly for the benefit of the monk while the second is for the benefit of others.
Thus we see monks restricting themselves in temples, giving a sermon on Poya day, attending to the religious need of their area.
There also those who go in to the forests and meditation centers striving to understand the truth.
Rev. Gnanasara has chosen to devote his time and efforts almost totally for the protection of Dhamma from its enemies. He has no time for common niceties. I see him as a man who is sacrificing his own salvation and risking a stint in one of the Narakadiyas for the sake of others,. In the interim period he has been assured of a stint in jail, which may not be quite as bad as Apaya and perhaps not so good as Divya Loka too.

I commend Colombo Telegraph for publishing this but this is NOT the entire incident. Only one TV station was brave enough to show it all.
It was unbelievably disgraceful. The non- Buddhists amongst us must surely be laughing from their backsides at what goes on for Buddhism in this country. I would recommend CT to get the whole episode for public display so that awareness is created. None of the mayhem is actually captured here.
The fact is, no one abuses and rubbishes Buddhism as much has this one man in a yellow robe. Yet no one demands that he be put away as an example to other potential destabilising agents. No one cares.
The implications of all this can be serious. Particularly on the foreign investment side. Nothing short of a stable society where the Law enforcement and the Law itself is stridently manifest to all, will advertise this country as a modern society to attract foreign investors into this country. No organization in its right mind would invest in a potentially violent place, ridden with religious and racial unrest. The equation is quite simple.
I really don’t think the President or his government fully understands the powder keg they are now sitting on. They havent done a thing than just offer empty words to a growing populace that is coming round to the belief that the government is incapable and is only prone to loud yet empty talk.
Sri Lanka continues to flounder in crisis after crisis. They are all man made. The President can save his breath asking our ‘experts’ domiciled elsewhere, to come back to their own country. For what? may I ask!!!

There are various types of lions and one of them is the Barbary Lion or the Great Asiatic Lion. There is also the sub species called the Balu Sinha, and judging from the way almost all of our so called Buddhists have been insulting a robed monk in CT, they must be having a close relationship with the Balu Sinha sub species.
A dog does not care whether it is a monk or a thief who is at the gate. He will bark because he thinks it is his duty to do so. That is the way he has been trained by his masters. In the case of our Balu Sinhas, they are being cheered on by the non Buddhist Baboons like C P Amarasiri.
What is at work in these Buddhists is the canine gene mixed with the lion gene, topped with human genes for good measure. All that hodge podge of genes make them Balu Sinhas. Their origin is of no concern. Whether they are from Andhra or Timbuktu they are all Balu Sinhas and certainly not Kesara Sinhas.

I don’t want to make any degrading remarks about a Buddhist monk irrespective of who it is, as long as he is an ordained monk. If he is disrobed for his offensive behavior by the right religious authorities, then it is different. But until that happens, I will not use foul words on him.
But that does not mean I approve of what he is doing. I have already said that his behaviour is outrageous. That is a critical opinion. Not an insult. Do you see Muslims or Christians using such foul language on their religious leaders? They may criticize but not insult.
Are you a Sinhala Buddhist? Yes by birth, I am. My father was a Catholic but converted to Buddhism just before his marriage under the influence of my Buddhist mother.
I find Buddha starting his theories with certain assumptions as with any theory. Then he goes on to build up his ‘theories’ strictly in accordance with logic and reasoning, the way that science does today, and comes to certain conclusions. There are no contradictions any where in this extensive discourse. That is a really great thing.
I also find the absence of a creator God and the freedom given for genuine doubt unparalleled in any other religion. His theories of cause and effect are simply marvelous.
What I disagree with are the initial assumptions and the final conclusions.

Buddhism: No Rules – Only Principles
Perhaps I put it in the wrong way. I should have said,
“but as long as VG wears the saffron robe I will not do it.” This is not a rule, self imposed or otherwise.
One unique feature of Buddhism is that there are no RULES or COMMANDMENTS. only PRINCIPLES and Perhaps Promises. Buddha was a teacher not a God or even a commander. If you go through the real words used in all instances, for example, in the 1st percept, you will see this.
Buddhism: Panathi Patha Veramani Sikkhapapadam Samadiyami: I take the percept to abstain from destroying living beings. This concerns you and your conscience only. There is no Buddha or God coming in here. No commands, no rules only principles and promises made by you to your self.
Christianity: Thou Shalt Not Kill. (The 1st commandment), This is not a promise or a principle. It is a command from God. DO IT OR ELSE!!!
Islam: You may kill. Terms & Conditions apply. Ex: You may kill your own mother for apostasy and this was imposed on a certain mother in 2016. Islam is indeed a timeless religion.
In monotheistic religions, everything revolves around a central omnipotent God that no one has seen or heard. Just like Bernard Shaw’s orbiting pot, it is just an initial assumption that you simply have to accept. Since it happens to be an assumption, you cannot question it.
In Euclidean Geometry, you start with a small set of axioms, which appeal to common sense, such as what a point is or a straight line is and so on, and based on that strong foundation build up a large edifice that is of great practical value as well as intellectually appealing
The situation in all religions is that all religions too have to start with certain assumptions or axioms. In monotheistic religions you are forced using fear from childhood to accept them. In Buddhism one can take it or leave it. No one is going to use force on you.
I hope that makes my position clear.

Disrobing a Monk
According to the Vinaya Pitaka (the section dealing with the discipline of Sangha) an ordained monk can be disrobed for violating any one or more of the Four Paaraajika (The Defeaters) rules, the most important rules of Vinaya Rules:
1) sexual intercourse
2) murder
3) major-theft
4) falsely claiming supernormal abilities.
All the other offences can be remedied, these four are terminal and disrobing irrevocable.
I ask you, has Ven Gnanasara been proven guilty of any of these offenses? If not how can anyone demand that he be disrobed? Are you guys more expert in the Vinaya Pitaka than the Prelates? Are you guys more faithful than the Buddha himself to these rules?
I rest my case there.
