Governor Chris Gregoire has signed into law a measure that legalises same-sex marriage in Washington state, which now joins several other US states that allow gay and lesbian couples to wed, the Guardian reports.

According the newspaper law takes effect on Thursday when gay and lesbian couples can collect wedding certificates and licences from county auditors.
