Even though Prime Minister Rani Wickremesinghe had come to the rescue of Parliamentarian Wimal Weerawansa, he was arrested by the CID a short while ago at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) after detecting that he was travelling on an invalid passport, police said.

High drama prevailed at the Bandaranaike International Airport today when CID officers stopped National Freedom Front (NFF) leader Wimal Weerawansa MP from going abroad.
Weerawansa reportedly had behaved in an unruly manner first argiving with the immigration officers and later with the CID officers who had questioned him.
Meanwhile Weerawansa explaining matters said “I came to the BIA around 3.30 am today to leave on a tour to Italy, France and UK. When I produced my passport at the immigration desk an officer said it was not valid”
“I recently lost my passport and in place of that obtained a new one. Later I found my lost passport and had mistakenly sent it to stamp the visa. However in this period I also lost the passport I had newly obtained”
“The Immigration officers told me that if I can get a new passport I could travel with the Visa stamped in my old passport. So I went to Immigration and Emigration office in Colombo and obtained a new passport and came back to BIA with the old and the new one in possession”
“However by this time CID officers were present and they stopped and questioned me despite the fact I had acted in accordance with the Immigration officers advise”
Weerawansa went on to say that he was going to Europe on an invitation extended by several organizations to conduct lectures on the prevailing situation in Sri Lanka following the government’s agreement to implement proposal contained in the recent UNHRC resolution.
Weerawansa described the incident as a clear attempt to stop him from going abroad and relaying the truth to Sri Lankan’s domiciled in Europe about the current happenings in the country.
The National Freedom Front leader said that he had got reliable information that the government was trying to arrest him.
However, an Immigration officer said that Weerawansa had behaved in a wild manner using foul language while accusing the officers of being involved in a conspiracy to arrest him.
Leader of the House, Minister Lakshman Kirielle informed parliament earlier that MP Wimal Weerawansa who was detained at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) by the CID has been allowed to leave the country after Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe facilitated the legal clearance of Weerawansa’s passport.

I also have thought about this. A lost passport should have been reported as invalid to all the embassies. Did the Dept of Immigration and Emigration not have enough time to report or what went wrong?

My experience is that the airline checks the visa before they allow boarding. I don’t know did WW ever get to the point of Emirates checking his visa to Schengen Area.
I also don’t know would any Schengen country allow him to enter carrying two passports. One valid passport without visa and the other one with visa but invalid.

This idiotic legislator should know that when one reports the loosing a passport an a new one is issued the “Old Passport” is automatically becomes invalidated, and is fed in to the computer system as “stolen” So he should know that it cannot be used and even having it is an offence. If according to Weerasansa, if an Immigration Officer told him that if he gets a new passport he could travel with Visas in the old passport, is also wrong as the “Old Passport” is considered “Stolen” and is “Invalid” If it is true action should be taken against this officer as he cannot accept the “Old Passport” as a valid document unless a higher officer changes the status of the “Old Passport” as a valid travel document.

This is very confusing WW goes to the airport ( at what time did he go) He must have gone hours before and then he comes to Colombo. lodges an entry at the police station and gets a new passport before 7,30 AM to the Airport again. How did he get this passport so fast. Must commend the passport office for their efficiency. Obviously the new passport will not have the visa but the old passport had the visa and this old passport is not in the system and therefore not valid.
I have heard that people have a 5 year multiple visa to US and it will be in the old passport and after that if it elapsed, we take the new passport and the old passport with the visa stamp to the air port . Is there anything wrong in doing this. I know people had stapled the passports together

I have stapled my CANCELED (USED UP)old passport which contains multiple entry visas to the new PP.. Never had a problem…… BUT I wonder if booruwa had his passport canceled or had it reported LOST. IF he had reported lost HE CANNOT staple the old pp with or without valid visas… MORON I say…

What I have read is that WW is accused of having provided false information for his very latest super fast passport.
To visit UK, France and Italy WW needs a Schengen visa and a UK visa.

May be it was because your visa was issued at the time the old passport was valid. I believe in the case of WW, the recent visa had been issued and posted in a PP that had been invalidated because it had been reported lost several years ago. WW had said, passing the blame to his staff, that it was them that had got the recent visa on to an old passport. There is a lot more to this than seen on the surface; there is grave suspicion of fraudulent activity and forgery and WW seem to be in the middle of it (note similar illegal activities by his wife), and I think the police and immigration are quite right that they arrested the guy and launch an investigation.
