What Was Rising Mr. Jayatilleka?

By Shyamon Jayasinghe

I am still wondering what exactly was rising for Dayan Jayatilleka (DJ) to write about on Colombo Telegraph. DJ begins by citing lyrics from a song sung by the Catholic American singer Bruce Springstream. The song, ‘The Rising,’ is well-known but Bruce sang it in the context of the September 11 attacks by Islamic fundamentalists. It sent the message that the civilized world should not surrender at such horrible assaults. What on earth has this got to do in the current Sri Lanka context? Who attacked whom? Who surrenders to whom?

A presidential election was fought and Mahinda Rajapaksa’s(MR) opponent won it clearly. Despite MR’s blatant and ugly abuse of state resources and all the intimidation; despite the total absence of billboards and posters for Maitri; despite the favourable channeling of media, the humble farmer’s son cleared the line and occupied the position without fuzz. Maitripala Sirisena appointed his cabinet from among elected members of Parliament. The new Prime Minister, Ranil Wickremasinghe, had himself been elected by a massive majority in his electoral district. They were all elected from among the people. May be on an earlier occasion, but that is no issue. If the government does not hold the confidence of Parliament a vote of no-confidence can be brought and the PM and cabinet can be sent home. Beauty isn’t it Mr Jayatilleka?

MahindaUpon setting up office, the new government, strictly according to mandate obtained during the Presidential elections, went about professionally to give effect to its 100-day program that would in effect restore our democratic institutions and checks and balances against executive abuse of power. This means our people get protected from being robbed and otherwise abused by the ruling family and a set of creepy Parliamentarians. That was the ten-year-old drama Sri Lankans had witnessed.

Hence, pray tell us what this rising is about. Why do the crowds have to cry along with that bundle of contradictions, Vasudeva, “we will not surrender!” Surrender to whom? The song of Bruce had meaning in its context. The US was delivered a devastating blow by lunatic Islamic fundamentalists and Bruce sent the message of inspiration to Americans ‘never to surrender.’ On the other hand, what is the rising DJ experienced at Nugegoda? Unless, of course, he refers to some rising within his limbs.

DJ is in raptures about the crowds. However, we saw during elections how capable the Rajapaksa regime was in bringing in crowds for meetings. MR was never able to run his government professionally but credit goes to him for the way he ran his meetings. MR carried mobile audiences with him in a load of buses. The audiences were trained. Those in the front row must have a baby to produce. They must have flags and banners to raise and they must do some gimmicks. Women must be on the sides along the path. The messiah arrives and they must stretch out their hands trying deliriously to catch the divine apparition. In one meeting that I saw at Ratmalana, I spotted at least 20 buses from areas as far as Aivissawela, Gampaha etc. TV audiences are impressed! If Dayan was watching he would have teared without glicerine. However, we know what the result had been.

Likewise at Nugegoda. DJ, describing the Nugegoda scene DJ writes, ”The most emblematic scene-a a young man atop a billboard waving a flag and MR’s portrait into the eye of a drone camera”. DJ who masquerading as a political analyst writes about events in other lands should have known that these scenes are prearranged and doctored. This kind of mobilization is typically fascist and it all began with Herr Hitler. Like a school kid, DJ is simply carried away at this sight.

DJ, in his piece, becomes like Vasudeva. He displays a similar maverick behavior by making statements that don’t simply carry. He says the people did not want an unelected government. We have answered that. He says in critical tone that “the Foreign Minister, Mangala Samaraweera, pledged to the UN Human rights Commission to work on developing a domestic mechanism on accountability.” So what’s wrong? This is what the UN wanted Sri Lanka to do from the inception of this episode and MR ‘s government would have saved a lot of heat and sweat had they done that. Instead, MR prevaricated and prolonged until this whole thing got compounded into a huge issue. Then, at that point, MR surrenders by setting up a domestic enquiry. If it was right for MR to do why wrong for Mangala to do? Again, DJ defends a ‘deep Sinhala nationality’ but qualifies by saying that such a nationalism will not be anti- Mulsim or anti-Tamil. Can you beat that?

Oh! This man is hopeless; is dishonest and is self-serving. Mind you, this gentleman some years ago became part of the cabinet of the NPC run by the EPRLF!

There is no country like Sri Lanka!

Ugly piece of writing with hatred and delusion by Shyaman. MR is the only powerful leader who can unite Sri Lanka. DJ was writing about the rising of people power.

He went to Mullaitivu last December to ask the people to forget about the past and to vote for him.
Why don’t the people try him for another 10yrs?

Perhaps someone should gently remind Dayan that the catalyst for the success of (Rise of) Arab Spring was the “self immolation” of a patriot!

Thought I’d mention, in case that aspect was somehow overlooked by this upcoming “patriot.”

By “unite” you mean colonize the North and East with Sinhalese and keep suppressing Tamils.
Sinhalese support MaRa because they believe MaRa is the leader who genuinely wants to crush the Tamils.
After the war the Rajapaksa regime did everything in their power to make life as hard as possible for Tamils.

Well said, Shyamon, I really amuse reading this guy DJ’s articles. If he could put a DR in front of him, you could place at least 5 of them. He seems suffer from the ‘Old lady syndrome’ without offence to either old or women.

As you said, this great hero saying about rising was a Youth Affairs Minister in NorthEast Provincial Council under Mr Varatharaja Perumal. How far he moved on. His admiration to Wimal tells it all, it was a scene to see him in their company.

An excellent article by Shyamon. DJ is pissu – totally mad or is he deaf and blind – total hero worship of the ruthless previous regime. Something definitely wrong with him.

Did you know that dumb people don’t like anyone to point out that they are dumb. They rather hear other call them very smart. I expect that dumb people will dislike this post but a vast majority of Sri Lanka people are dumb; as dumb as door knobs. Therefore, it is good that Mr. Jayasinghe and others are out there to point out the silliness of the arguments made by MR crowd.

It has been thousands of years since Buddhism had been brought to Sri Lanka; why do you think the monks never got around to teaching people Pali and Sanskrit so they can read and understand Buddha’s teachings themselves? (teach a hungry man to fish… you know?) If not for Christian missionaries people still would not be able to read and write.

People like MR, Vasu, Wimal or DJ thrive on dumb people because they have the audacity to throw around unrelated arguments just because they have seen it work in some other context. As I said, it is great that there are some who are not only smart enough to understand it but is also caring enough to point that out to others.

But let it be warned that if the smart people were to let down their guard, it only takes the time for these Pipers of Doom to find another tune to start leading the rats back over the precipice.

“why do you think the monks never got around to teaching people Pali and Sanskrit so they can read and understand Buddha’s teachings themselves? “

Because they wanted to be worshipped; fed and clothed; and provided Mercedez Benz for transport. Worship also the bo tree and the dead man’s tooth. Perpetuate the ignorance and superstition. The species is still evolving; Gnanasara is the latest model.

Shyamon, you took a circuitous route. But you delivered the truth in style. “Oh! This man is hopeless; is dishonest and is self-serving”. And that route was most interesting – all the way. I enjoyed it.

To me, the absolute truth is that this katussa is DISHONEST.

Nugegoda meeting was a flash in the pan and gives people like Dyan something to do untill MR borads the plane to HAGUE. People llike Dyan argue that you can put up with some corruption for what the Hambanthotta Thug has done for the Country. But MR is not just a THUG but he is a mass KILLER and LOOTER.
UNHCR have set a trap for the THUG and Nugegoda for Tamils is a blessing in disguise and at least the World now knows that the Majority in Sinhala Lanka headed by the THUG are born RACIST and MR can never Unite the Country.

This is brilliant stuff by Shyamon Jayasinghe. I read it just now. As one commentator stated it is simply written but powerful. DJ and Mahindapala are self-seeking vermin. Patriotism for people like this and many others like this is a living. All these fellows who are at the helm of the pro-Rajapakse drive (eg Vasu)are those who had got diplomatic postings for their undeserved kith and kin or those who received lucrative contracts from the dictator. Glad to see the new Foreign Minister acting in style to withdraw all non-professionals from the foreign service. Even a UNP MP’s (Chandrani Bandara) son was withdrawn.

Simon not sure why you put a ! after EPRLF ?

it was noter one of the non-racist Tamil separatist organisation along with PLOT that was socialist – even counted one time Socialist Dayan as one of its trusted members. It is just the the Tamil racist wanted a more racist representation like LTTE that massacred the moderates and the leftist as the over educated Tamil doctors cheered on.

In you next article show some respect for non racist Tamil Socialist parties please.

Thank you Shyamon Jayasinghe. It was like watching flashbacks in a film. One cannot help but tolerate the sycophants like Dayan Jayatillake and hope that one day they’ll recognise the massive corruption that enabled the Rajapakses to build magnificient mansions in far away countries and accumulate a mountain of funds that will let them live off comfortably for the rest of their lives. Their parting shot will be the parliamentary elections and if MR as threatened, fails to become the Prime Minister, the family might migrate to where their mansions are and where they are already citizens.

DJ assumes that the readers of the CT are mostly the Tamil diaspora and UNPers. Therefore he is relentless with his totally warped views of the political state of the country. If his predictions were anything to go by just 2 months ago he wouldn’t have been standing in Nugegoda reading a plea from MR from a scrap of paper asking them to elect MR as PM. That too with political discards like Wimal, Vasu who do not have a voter base big enough to stand on their own.

These so called patriots need a crutch to face society and today they know that the most available crutch for them is MR. So they are using him to advance their own personal ambition and not that of the country. DJ is one of them but less smarter than Wimal and Vasu because they al least know where the crutch is but DJ is always prying to see which crutch is the sturdiest. As you rightly said DJ became part of the cabinet of the NPC run by the EPRLF! . He saw this to be a good crutch then. He has no mind of his own and lacks consistency because he is playing a game. So don’t take DJ seriously.

Shayamon J, thanks for your article.

Indeed Shyamon, there is no country like Sri Lanka, and that is the tragedy!

This country sits in splendid isolation as a hopeless basket case where it cheats itself at every turn, as is valiantly tries to bob up in between each of them.

The contribution the likes of DJ make to this sinusoidal curve, is immense. He could not have done better.

“Oh! This man is hopeless, dishonest and is self-serving” – in one sentence you said it all Shyamon, you did.

Indeed there is no country like Sri Lanka! No way!!

To add one more note to the great article by Shyamon, the real calling for Bruce Springsteen is to rise up against the forces (as a nation)and people who destroy and, violates DEMOCRACY and Civil liberties, rule of law for the people. Which is what people of Sri Lanka from all areas did on Januray 8th 2015. And the sycophant DJ, used that very same song to bring back MARA who violated, and terrorized the people of SL for a decade is not hilarious, is actually Scary. Not only to Tamils and Muslims of the country but for the Sinhalease of south this threat from MARA regime was real. DJ fails to see that for his own gain is pathetic. He tried to bargain the FM post, so not everything Mangala Samaraweera does is pro-eelam.
Thought the CT article is titled Rising, in other news outlets title of this very same article by the swine DJ is that” Mahinda Mahinda apita one Mahinda Chanting crowds echo clarion call to Madamulana from Nugegoda”. His duplicity is apparent even in the title. inIt is widely assumed that the note DJ brought was written by our shameless man him self – the megalomaniac DJ. One thing he should realize is that all the rouge underlings MARA and GOTA choose to do their dirty work were abducted, white vanned and disappeared. So if there will be a second coming of MARA, his fate is sealed. This is DJ 15 minutes of fame, he likes to feel so important, recognized, to get that signing a pact with the devil , doesn’t matter. Not only self serving, and I seriously believe this guy has some sort of a psychological/behavioral problem. Changing his name says it all. DJ, Mahindapala, and Rajiv on their path to destroy the civil liberties that we won for the country under dire circumstances. It is high time people recognize a threat to national security and unity. I have stopped commenting on his articles because it gives new boost to his shattered ego.

Very good comment, PRAN. The real rising took place by Maitri-Ranil forces on January 8th. That was a rising clearly spelt out for democracy and freedom from an increasingly dictatorial and corrupt MARA government. A kind of revolution it was against all obstacles by MARA forces. How much MARA lied to the TV audiences and the people. His last trump card was to lie that Sajith Premadasa had crossed over. Medamulane defecated on his throne

I agree with Revd Sobitha that elections should be held only after MARA’s corrupt dealings are exposed and after the new electoral system is brought into force.

I have a very serious concern with Mr. Jayasinghe’s piece: It is a monumental waste of time and intelligence to devote any energy to dealing with a totally reprehensible character like DJ.The level of his personal inadequacy has ALWAYS needed a father figure to hark back to or lean on. First (still, in fact) it has been the never-ending deification of his father, Mervyn de Silva, then it was the genuflecting comments about Lakshman Kadirgamar (“How I had rum and coke seated at a table in his garden) and, persistently, it has been MR to whom he has owed his bread and butter. His “victory” over the UNHRC has proven the pyrrhic one that many of us pointed out it was. Mangala’s success in having the delivery of the most recent report postponed very quickly proves, if proof be needed, what a bunch of puffery DJ’s proud boasts were.
Shyamon, don’t waste your time on this man. It is only those who don’t matter one whit in the scheme of things that will place any credibiity on what DJ has to say.

I don’t think anything is ‘rising’ as such, from any side ! It’s only 39 days to date after the election. Be patient, let the Mythree/RW combo rule for 10 or at least 5 years to see if anything is rising, after that !

No need of rushing to Nugegoda so early… 5.8 million brainwashed fools and leeches cannot wait for a reasonable time ? Enjoy the loot for now.

It appears, from all accounts, that the crowd at Nugegoda was big. So, it is not something to be dismissed as inconsequential. One should not, however, attach more importance to it that is warranted.

MR was beaten at the Presidential Election but he was not thrashed, nor was he shamed. President Sirisena’s majority, whilst being healthy, was not overwhelming. Small wonder, then, that MR remains popular. But the large crowd at Nugegoda should not be mistaken for a national hankering for him to return to the helm.

This kind of crowd following the defeat of a strong leader should not come as a surprise. It is akin to a gathering of a grieving family to mourn the passing away of a favourite uncle which serves as much to offer them comfort and consolation in their bereavement as it does to pay generous tribute to the dear departed. And that is not a bad thing. Thankfully, a meeting of this sort that gives the supporters of the defeated candidate an agreeable feeling can also help prevent them from otherwise turning to mindless violence.

DJ, like Mahidnapala, backed MR to win. And naturally he must be disappointed. And seeing such a big crowd must have helped to mitigate for his disappointment. But DJ is not an uneducated man. He’s given to (or would like us to believe he is) to rational analysis of political situations and affects to read the political tea leaves well. So, he should not get too carried away and refuse to see the obvious or fail to acknowledge the sins of the MR administration.

MR held all the aces, going into the Election. He was a formidable candidate. His defeat not only underlines the magnitude of MS’s victory but also reflects the deep disillusionment of the electorate with MR during his second term. MS, variously described as bereft of charisma and with no personality, was able to successfully tap into this reservoir of discontent. In every single electoral district the percentage of the votes polled by MR in 2015 was less than in 2010. And in only three districts did his total votes in 2015 exceed those in 2010; interestingly, one of these was the Northern Province. These statistics tell their own story. DJ cannot simply ignore them.

DJ seems to make out that MR’s defeat was some sort of aberration from which the electorate will soon recover. DJ seems to also conveniently overlook the sins of the MR administration. Since his re-election in 2010, all MR seems to have done was for the greater glory of MR. 18A enabled him to run for a third term and gave him even more powers than he already had. 18A was certainly not for the benefit of the country. Nor were the incarceration of Sarath Fonseka or the impeachment of the CJ. MR presided over a hugely corrupt administration and an unparalleled exercise of nepotism. And DJ should know more that most that the country’s international stocks were never lower than under MR.
To overlook all these and project MR like some god given gift of a leader to take charge again, is simply silly and smacks of intellectual dishonesty.
