Who Is Scared Of Colombo Telegraph?

By Malinda Seneviratne – The Nation editorial today –

Malinda Seneviratne

We live in a world where the Bible and Quran are used to justify anything and everything, a world where the teachings of the Buddha are (mis)interpreted to buttress political projects quite antithetical to the teachings of Siddhartha Gauthama and a world where the works of Karl Marx are mined for ‘appropriate’ quotes to support preferred political position.  In such a world, selectivity, deliberate downplaying and happy inflation abound.  The internet, for all its promise, is made as much of information as misinformation.  It can empower and it can also lead astray.

So this is a world of (mis)information overload where effective regulatory laws really don’t exist.  It is a world made for slander and lying where those with bucks and guns can mine selectively, conjure up files upon files of fantasies and, let’s face it, vilify with impunity.  And there are enough takers too, enough people who revel in garbage production and enough demand to lap up the produce with glee.  The discerning would have a good sense of true weight of ‘story’ and by and by figure out which sources are reliable and which are not.

The most important point is that you can’t really shut people from going where they want to go.  Those who want pornography will visit such sites. Those who want gossip will find it.  It all depends on what people want and how serious they are about getting reliable information.  For example, if you want information about the ills of smoking, it won’t be enough to look for anti-smoking websites.  What appear as anti-smoking sites in the first several pages of Google, for instance, are operated by various sections of the tobacco industry.  Even the ‘opposition’, thus, is regulated.  If you have bucks, it can be done.  On the other hand, the truth, as they say, is ‘out there’ and it is virtually impossible to block all roads leading to it.

This is why site-blocking is a puerile exercise.  Anyone can say ‘any old thing’ slander included.  What is blocked can be accessed through proxy servers; works for pornography and works for mischievous or slanderous sites that paint themselves as neutral, political commentators.

Colombo Telegraph (CT) is not a porn site.  It is a political news/commentary site.  Those who run it have their political slant.  They do allow the ‘other side’ (shall we say?) some space, but for the most part privilege columnists with undisguised antipathy towards the current regime.  They indulge in what could be called gutter journalism, hitting below the belt in ways that do themselves much disservice, for example the recent tasteless attacks on Rajpal Abeynayake, the Editor of the Daily News.  The management of comments is equally unprofessional.  And yet, there is enough good-sense stuff in CT to attract a good cross section of people interested in Sri Lanka’s political firmament.  Indeed, it is a convenient place to visit if you want to know what those who are opposed to the regime think.  That entire club meets there, so to speak.

But CT is not just platform for regime-haters.  CT also puts out information that is of absolutely import in defending Sri Lanka against various machinations from rogue-players in the international community.  CT has ‘broken stories’ that have been used extensively by those opposed to ‘imposed regime-change’.  This should also be recognized.

CT has been blocked on many occasions by various internet service providers in Sri Lanka, both state-run and private entities.  It has to be consequent to orders from somewhere close to the top of the regime, obviously.  Only the blockers and those who order blocking will know the ‘why’ of it all; we can only comment on the meaninglessness.

The United States of America doesn’t block in this crude manner.  It purchases dissent for the most part or regulates/manages it.  That’s being smart.  Cost-effective.  The US knows that what cannot be stopped should be managed.  That’s why we get ‘conflict management’ as opposed to ‘conflict resolution’.  Washington probably knows that it is better to have the opposition visible than have it go underground.  It should not be forgotten that avenues to vent anger and opposition are an important part not only of a vibrant democracy but in consolidating power, especially since virtual space is the preferred battleground of slothful critics.  Keyboard warriors show where the fault lines are and thereby serve regimes that are terrified of even the slightest threat to perceived invincibility.

The internet, for all its liberating appearances, is a tool more effectively used by the powerful.  In Sri Lanka’s case, since ‘threat’ is more from outside and since real power is also resident elsewhere, there’s little that can be gained by blocking CT, either domestically or internationally.  It only betrays regime-jitteriness.

Has this “Rat” started to climb the wall or is it on top of the wall wondering which side to jump!

Smellinda says: “They (CT) indulge in what could be called gutter journalism, hitting below the belt in ways that do themselves much disservice, for example the recent tasteless attacks on Rajpal Abeynayake, the Editor of the Daily News. The management of comments is equally unprofessional.”

We the People Say: “Hitting a moronic turd-burgling foul mouth-piece of a journalist like Rajpissupal in the goolies in NOT indulging in gutter journalism, it is saying it like it is. Therefore, my dear Park, I do not for a moment believe that this rat has climbed the wall. In fact he is desperately trying to sound objective, but fails to realise that Smellinda and objectivity should never be used in the same sentence, if one looks for good sound bytes”

Malinda Seneviratne types “What is blocked can be accessed through proxy servers; works for pornography”

Does his wife/partner (if he has one) know this man frequents porn sides, otherwise how would he know how to access porn sides through proxy servers?

Is Malinda Seneviratne a dirty old pervert?

Do you also get paid for writing on these pages, aside from touching your toes when Malinda is behind you?

      Park,

I think it is a disgrace to a “RAT” to compare this crazy mad a.s to a RAT. Even rats have better brains than this type of Donkey’s.

What he say in hradline….. Who Is Scared Of Colombo Telegraph?…shows his intellectual level.

He should know that Colombo Telegraph is published by Intellectuals for the benefit of Intellectuals.

CT does not do Laundry work for others like his sister paper Daily News.

Only the coverds and donkeys are fearful of CT and it’s comments.

If those donkeys had listened to CT writers and their readers comments, Sri Lanka could have avoided UNHRC sanctions by now.

But the Morons were adament enough not to listen to anybody writing truth and killed many messangers who advised and guided.

Now the Rajapakse Morons are been cornered by UNHRC and the International community and that effects the whole country.

Now there’s no way of getting out of the mess.

Let’s see who is going to get scared when UNHRC resolution is passed against Sri Lanka at the end of the month.

Milinda, keep washing Maharaja’s dirty linnen and leave the CT and it’s readers alone.

      Good luck.

Great! great! I told in my last comment that Malinda has learned a lot by coming to CT.

    Now his is enlightened.

    What an end is this?
“The internet, for all its liberating appearances, is a tool more effectively used by the powerful. Royal government you better don’t block the CT any more. You are keep losing support.

And now release the 13 year old child from the correction center she is kept and her mother from the Boosa or we know to influence to make Malinda to write on that stupidity too. LOL

Let the Darwinian of news site dictate who survives and who falls on the way side.

400 years ago, the Church tried to prevent the Copernican Theory of Heliocentric Planetary system be banned or not taught. They put it on the Index, and Burned Giordano Bruno on the Stake on February 1600. At that time, 99.999% thought the Sun was going around the Earth.

    Ultimately, the Truth prevailed.

Even today, despite the Internet, Still about 25% of the Americans and Europeans believe the Sun goes around the Earth, according to a National Science Foundation Study.

Most Americans believe the Bible story of great floods and the Ark that saved Noah’s family and a male and a female of each species. They seriously believe all humans and animals found today are the descendants of those who were saved by the Noah’s Ark. Some of the US ‘intellectuals’ went on an investigation trip to Turkey where they thought The Noah’s Ark may have landed after the trip.

      • 2
        0

The so called US “intellectuals” you claim were never anything more than a fringe Bible group.

Christian right wingers in Ameirca , espeically those who criticise evolution, are not supported by mainstream Academia. If anything, these literal believers in the Bible are made fun of.

        • 0
          0

          Palmsquirrell,
I must say, the story of Noah and his Ark is a continuation of the Bible story that began with Adam, the first robot like man Yahweh created and Eva who was created with a rib of Adam later. Like all US presidents, Barack Hussein Obama too used that Bible to swear at his inauguration. For that reason, I believe, Hussein Obama must be a Bible believer and therefore is in the ‘fringe Bible group’ and not the mainstream Academia.

What Americans believe, by NSF Study. ( Worse for many other countries)

        1. 25% Believe, the Sun goes around the Earth.

        2. 44% believe in Creation, Adam and eve etc.

Belief is one thing. It may be false or True. However, facts are contrary to these beliefs.

Now, cutting-edge technology is enabling us to shine a powerful new light on our collective past. By participating in the latest phase of this real-time scientific project, you can learn more about yourself than you ever thought possible. You will also help support the Genographic Legacy Fund, which works to conserve and revitalize indigenous cultures around the world.

You are so intellectually dishonest. Don’t you find Buddhist scriptures too are misinterpreted and used to justify injustice and violence just as the religions you mentioned. Don’t you also see how these religions have also functioned as source and inspiration of justice. Your comment on Karl Max is even funny. Your writings only demonstrate your ideological biases and racist political project. This is pathetic. You bring more insult to intellectuals in Sri Lanka just like Rajpal, Dayan, and Peiris do

I think MS or the like writers have not much to report these days.

If they are uneducated rascals – or the like, they could have much, making efforts in every means to misguide the folks.
Journalists should have free mind of writing – which is what MS and Rajapal and the like minded fellows seem to own these days.

Malinda S is forced to concede the popularity and acceptability of free blogs like the Colombo Telegraph – read by an increasing number of pro and not-so-pro-government readers. I avoid the word anti-Govt because comment is free in the blog. One is reminded of the old Lankan saying – both Sinhala and Tamil – that only ripe and sweet mangoes get stones thrown at them. One feature that CT is much more read than the regular newspapers is because of the provision of lively comment permitted and encouraged therein.

Malinda, not expectedly, defends his fellow Editor Rajpal in his comments. If at all the term gutter journalism comes into play – as it does here – it relates entirely to Rajpal who has brought the once venerated CDN to levels of total revulsion.

Thank God this guy comes to us in small doses. All that most of us really ask for is that contributors to CT state their point of view and leave us, the readers, to sort out the wheat from the chaff. We are allowed the luxury of a comment, and if we chose to call a spade a spade, so be it. You are free to defend/attack whoever you wish; please respect the mature readership of this site to reach their own conclusions.

    Actually Mobitel was allowing access until last last week. Now that is blocked too. Earlier when people complained that they can’t access I used to think they were just incompetent. On 15 Feb 2014, someone wrote to me;

    “Dear Ms Ratnawalli,

    Thank you for your email.

As you suggested I tried to get the Col.Telegraph versions of your Article. But I’m sorry I’m unable to download them. (I read some weeks ago that the SL Govt had banned approx. 1000 websites. I dont know exactly what they all are, but I know that Col.Telegraph is one of them.)”

Last week I noticed that Mobitel too returns the message “SSL connection error”. I am now accessing it through a proxy server when I am at home. But I can still access it without any problem from my office, which has its own server although the service provider is Dialog.

Today, except for few newbies and amateurs most people know how to access banned websites through ‘unblocksit’ websites or proxies. If authorities want to ban bad websites they must do it properly without becoming laughing stock. Absolutely silly and futile exercise. Government only procured a bad name.

You don’t want to be laughing stock if you can’t do it properly. Hence I suggest,

        send in the white van

appoint yourself the competent authority for censorship

Under special rules you can exempt restriction on MPs, bureaucrats, armed forces, party thugs, cronies ……. enabling them to have access to porn sites. You might as well keep them happy.

who buys the Nation? Its just an ambitious man’s political project and its editor is just a hired hack.
All mainstream media here are well under control – for example even the Sunday Times’ so called `independent’ investigative reporting on corruption is hypocritical since it exists in a cozy symbiotic relationship with certain high officials who provide these leads as a controlled exposure measure to dumb down the public over time and in return for blanking their deep involvement and embarrassing connections to the reported misdeeds.

What is the worth of TRUTH?

TRUTH is not a subject for the so called journalists or politicians nowadays in any country.

Continuous pro-LTTE propaganda appears in the CT is a good example how the TRUTH is a casualty in politics.

Now Vai.Gopalasamy tells Mahinda Rajapaksa and Stalin(son of M.Karunanithy)are jointly working against him to defeat in the coming parliamentary elections. He contests at VIRUTHU NAGAR where Kamaraj Nadar, former CM of Tamil nadu elected.

The truth is any of the pro-LTTE group has no support in any election.
