Wigneswaran Meets Indian Foreign Minister

Tamil National Alliance representatives are currently meeting with Indian External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid ahead of his meetings with Northern Chief Minister C.V. Wigneswaran in Jaffna today.

Wigneswaran-with-Sambanthan

TNA Leader R. Sampanthan and Parliamentarians M.A. Sumanthiran, Suresh Premachandran and Selvam Adaikalanathan are attending the meeting in Colombo.

The 13th Amendment to the constitution and the recently concluded Northern election at which the TNA won an overwhelming mandate are likely to be under discussion.

The TNA is expected to outline its plans for the NPC at the meeting.

Khurshid called for the full implementation of the 13th Amendment and a political solution that builds on the constitutional provision after his meeting with Foreign Minister G.L Peiris. He said India hoped that after the Northern election the TNA and the Government could address the issue of a political solution and meaningful devolution to the provinces.

It is time to analyze the division of power which should be enshrined in the constitution, where barriers should not be incorporated without unreasonable means. The division of powers should be either in the Indian or Canadian model. The talk that Federalism is separation is without any foundation and India has a moral duty to apply pressure on Sri Lanka. Even H.W.Jayawardena criticized self-determination at the Thimpu Talks which has no foundation at all.

India has got the Sampur power project, the gateway to Trincomalee, signed!

GoI is squeezing Rajapassa with the threat of a boycott of the CHOGM show and getting all the concessions it can out of him.. TNA and Wigneshwaran should call a halt on Sampur because many poor villages have been displaced and the electricity project will be an environmental and social disaster for Lanka

Indeed is having its moment after all the humiliations of the past at Rajapassa’s hand in glove with the China men..

But TNA must be smart and ask Chinese to come to north and invest there, we need shut down the white elephants in Hambantota where good money is being thrown after bad to sustain an empty port and airport!

Rajapakses are safe so far because of Manmohan Singh/Sonia Inda.
Kekille clan can be happy for another few months and they must be really hoping another Congress victory, which is highly unlikely. Indians wants a change this time round after 10 years of congress rule. If BJP wins the PM will be another maniac as same as MR.
Modi will treat the nam the way he should be treated.

We all hope the government will listen to you (Indian FM) and greater wisdom prevails. This will pave way for a better Sri Lanka with peace and harmony within a united and undivided country. Please do not trust the promises made regarding the devolution because after the CHOGM meeting they will be jettisoned as happened before. This is an opportunity once in a lifetime and if missed there is no light in sight.

It is indeed a pity, CM of Sri Lanka’s Northern Province has to seek help from a politician of another country to sort out grievances of the people he represents.

GOSL should give the support CM Wignesvaran needs to govern the Northern Province according Sri Lanka’s constitution. In a genuine & transparent way. Northern Province is an integral part of Sri Lanka. People who live there are citizens of Sri Lanka. Not Indians.

They should not feel a need to beg India all the time to solve their problems.

Ensuring people of Northern Province live in peace, dignity & freedom is primarily Sri Lanka’s responsibility.

By not taking that responsibility more seriously, GOSL leaves the field open for regional power players to exploit grievances of Tamil Sri Lankans to their advantage. And we have seen the results of that for 30 years.

    Cheers!

Sri Lanka ran to India to defeat the Tigers so many times in the past, and the Indians were handling them then. Now Tamils have to run to India to sort out their grievances. India is smart.

If the Sri Lankan regimes for 65 years accommodated Tamils aspirations we would have been truly independent managing our affairs internally. Are we now? No, now India, US, UK, UN and UNCHR all have a say in Lanka. A war crimes tribunal is waiting in the wings.

Isn’t it a shame on all the rulers up to now, including the ones now?

Sri Lanka must end alternating monopoly on power by two disfunctional parties. SLFP & UNP. Both are highly corrupt. Often backed by racist, opportunistic, minority parites into power.

Both UNP & SLFP are mired in a very violent past.

We have seen repeat performances by both UNP & SLFP over 65 years. Look at Sri Lanka now. It is a place from which citizens escape even aboard sinking boats. Desperation is such. Shameful!

Sri Lanka’s passport is hardly a badge of national honour. Ranks among the bottom 10 travel documents in the world. Embarrasing!

I hold the main, two stinking parties run by cronies for their henchmen totally responsible for Sri Lanka’s current mess.

I also hold the selfish, short-sighted, dumb and stupid Sri Lankan electorate responsible for putting self-serving, corrupt individuals in seats of power.

        Cheers!

          So what is the alternative?

Would you like to bring back LTTE and JVP?

“Northern Province is an integral part of Sri Lanka. People who live there are citizens of Sri Lanka. Not Indians.”

And Sri Lanka is part of Greater Bharatt, for all intents and purposes,in few years time.

      Ben Hurling,

Nobody has to seek help from outside or to go behind other countries if the ruling leaders are honest, truthful, democratic, justice and listen to people’s grievances.

Where’s independent police commission, independent judiciary, HR commission, independent media etc, etc. What happened to all the unresolved Murder, theft, white van abductions, disappearances, etc. Aren’t these qualities of a dictatorial rule.

If the rulers do not deliver justice to it’s citizens, they have all the right to seek justice from International community.

India is still feeding over 150,000 Sri Lankan war refugees, four years after the war is over.

Trade between China and India is over 100 times than between Sri Lanka. Also both are part of BRICS.

It’s hi time Rajapakses get out from cocoon and see the reality of both inside Sri Lanksa and the outside world.

International community and India should play a key role in revitalizing the peace process that was agreed by both Sinhalese and Tamils between 2002 and 2006. It is the international community who brokered that peace process. When the peace process was stalled, the international community and India thought that LTTE terrorism was a barrier to find a peaceful solution and helped Sri Lanka to end the war, defeating LTTE. Now international community and India feels that Sri Lanka is the barrier to find a peaceful solution based on the agreement agreed by both. Therefore, the international community has a responsibility to break the barrier.

    Shameless loser.

He has betrayed Tamil modayas already.

Vigneswaran (Justice or not) must be given a chance. He seems better than every politician in the game. But, he has acted as a politician. He scorned the diaspora and the Tamilnadu activists. To placate them, he called Prabhakaran a hero, when as a Justice he was oath bound to regard him as a criminal.

But, we must give the man space. If he is astute, he will win the Tamils at least the rights under the 13th Amendment. The SL Government is under an obligation to do this as there is the Indo-Sri Lanka Treaty. So, with India’s insistence, this is achievable.

The LTTE we must know, however noble or not, left the Tamils with nothing (not nothing but with several Tamil young men and women dead without achieving anything). This was foolishness. They could have adopted an incremental approach. Got what was given under the 13th Amendment and slowly built up on it, when and if necessary. That would have been the approach of a pragmatic statesman. Let us hope that Vigneswaran, without selling the Tamil patrimony, can achieve at least the 13th Amendment with India’s help.
Let the LTTE supporting hot-heads give him the space. Now is the opportune time, with CHOGM, Indian pressure and the UN Human Rights Council to come in 2014. Give Vigs the chance to seize the moment.

Let the diaspora keep its cry for separation but understand the more pragmatic approach that has to be adopted on the ground. The diaspora is quite safe and does not have its head on the block. The TNA are brave people staying on and fighting for their people on the ground. We must salute them and give them the chance to do get at least something for the Tamils.

Wigneswaran could be Tamil peoples, messiah, Nelson Mandela or Mahathma Gandhi.

He is the ideal role model of a true leader. He will deliver justice to all the citizens of Sri Lanka irrespective their Race, religion and social or economic status.

Good luck to new Northern CM Mr. Wigneswaran.
