Wigneswaran’s Double-Speak And Dilemmas

By Malinda Seneviratne

Malinda Seneviratne

Things are not easy for the newly sworn in Chief Minister for the North, C.V. Wigneswaran.  During the campaign itself, the ex-judge had to compromise on principles to the point of raising serious questions on his judgment.

The man had to play the communalist card, sounding more like an R Sampanthan during the heyday of the LTTE.  Post-election, he had to drop rhetoric for pragmatism with respect to acknowledging the reality of the Governor. He had to come to Colombo to be sworn in by the President. He then had to deal with the vexed issue of distributing portfolios. Now, with appointments having been made he faces the disgruntled, some of whom opted to boycott the swearing in ceremony of the councillors.

The man has to manage all the divisions in Tamil political society hitherto smoothened out by the overbearing power of terrorists wearing ‘sole-representative’ status.   The Colombo-based, Colombo-raised ex-judge of the Supreme Court is in unfamiliar territory here.  That inexperience can only add further burden to his stated tasks of extracting ‘justice’ for his community.  These are early days to be sure but his statements; a heady mix of pragmatism, inclusive intent and unveiled separatist sentiment; reflect the unease of the man.

Wigneswaran has stated what no other Tamil leader has so far. Indeed even Sinhala nationalists could not articulate better one element of the legitimate antipathy to Tamil communalism, that of insecurity.

‘Sinhalese people have this as their only country. They feel insecure that there might be some joining together of Tamil Nadu and north-eastern Sri Lanka. That insecurity has sometimes resulted in anti-Tamil brutality but I aim to change minds on both sides.’

Perhaps it was ‘all too apparent’ to warrant statement, but Sinhala leaders seem to have failed in articulating the above point made by Wigneswaran.  If you take those Sinhalese who see Buddhism an integral part of ‘Sinhalaness’ or at least the overriding element of the cultural ethos of the Sinhalese as a whole, and add the strange complicity of the Catholic Church and non-Buddhist actors in the LTTE project, then the above is not suspicion but fact.  It can be argued that the LTTE is only part of an overall project to systematically eliminate the Sinhala race, both in numbers and through effacement of culture, one way or the other.

Wigneswaran may not see it all or might not take all of it as ‘real’, but he has at least acknowledged a key part of the Sinhala psyche vis-à-vis the politics of Tamil nationalism.  It can be called ‘apprehension’ if one prefers the mild, but the words suspicion and fear are not inappropriate.  The fixations on land, relevant boundaries and abysmal support for the exclusive homeland thesis so apparent in Tamil political rhetoric need to be taken as acquisitive, thieving, belligerent and inherently separatist.

But is Wigneswaran serious?  Never known as a fan of terrorism, the LTTE or Prabhakaran, he has found reason to praised and defend the ruthless terrorist who can be called ‘The Scourge of the Tamil Community’ for reasons Wigneswaran would find hard to refute.  It is as though the ex-judge has just woken up from a drunken stupor.  Listen to him: ‘This is the perception with regard to Prabhakaran as far as the Tamil people here are concerned. He may have been brutal but so is the government, those who are now in for a war crime inquiry internationally. If the Sinhalese saw their war-time leaders as heroes, Tamils might conversely do the same.’ Talk about over-simplification and puerile efforts at whitewashing terrorism!

Taken together, then, we have a man who seems rational, accommodating and sincere as well as a third-rate populist who is a happy caricaturist pandering to the lowest forms of chauvinism both living inside C.V. Wigneswaran.

Sure, a section of Tamils may still see him as a hero, but then he fought for a separate state, which did nothing to alleviate the fears that Wigneswaran believes the Sinhalese have.  Prabhakaran exterminated opposing Tamil groups, killed Tamil politicians, academics, priests and civil society leaders. He said he was the sole representative of the Tamils. Wigneswaran could compare and contrast the man with Hitler; he knows there are still Germans who see Hitler as a hero. When he calls the killers of Pathmanabha, Sabarathnam, Amirthalingam and Tiruchelvam a hero, Wigneswaran cannot except to get the ear of the Sinhalese whose ‘mindset’ he aims to change.

It is not easy for him.  The ‘fear’ he seeks to sort out was birthed by a Tamil chauvinism that came long before Prabhakaran.  G.G. Ponnambalam’s ’50-50’, the Malaysian Chelvanayakam’s ‘little now, more later’ mixed with separatism and Ponnambalam Ramanathan’s chauvinism pre-dates the LTTE by many decades.   Wigneswaran’s problem is that his expressed sensitivity to Sinhala concerns is clouded by decades of sabre-rattling by Tamil nationalists and bomb-throwing by terrorists who claimed to speak for Tamils.  He is not only silent on the fear-instilling rhetoric of Tamil nationalism he appears to be a willing articulator of the same rhetoric.  If Wigneswaran believes that the Sinhalese can be purchased by ‘I understand you people, but don’t worry’, then he’s dead wrong.  His words therefore should be taken with an appropriate dose of caution.

As important, however, is the fact that Tamils too have perceptions that make for question, concern and fear.  Even if Wigneswaran sheds the chauvinists and other extremists snapping at his heals and discards the communalist grey matter either dormant in his mind or gathered in the first days of his forays into politics, a clean hand held out has to be held only by a clean hand from the other side of the divide.

For now, he deserves congratulations.  For now, he won’t hear it, because it is muffled by the chauvinistic voices that reside in his head.  He might, by and by, let us hope.  And even then, it won’t be enough, for sanity must meet sanity, and insanity is cheap.

Vignesvaran seems to be a man with intelligence. Please let this new Politician try out the strategies being currently employed by MR, GR and Company. He can then see for himself, how the GOSL operates. If he has his feet on the ground, he will be able to learn from Politicans like Lee Kwan Yew, how to govern the Northern province, effectively.

        Dear all;
        Colombo gazzete published this on their online paper;
        That the
*****”President Mahinda Rajapaksa has insisted that Ministry Secretaries follow protocol and not try to play down the importance of the subject Minister.

The President had noted that on a number instances some Ministry Secretaries failed to respect their Ministers at public events.

“President Rajapaksa has noted one such incident when he was watching television where he saw the Secretary taking the lead role at a function while the Minister was also there,” sources at the President’s office said”.******

Malinda should note that to his handlers and bosses.
What the Ministry Secretaries can do,
if those ministers are not educated enough, like their bosses, and born idiots [ but cunning looters, criminals and rapists ], morons

Hasn’t this RajaPassa sycophant heard that one man’s terrorist is another man’s freedom fighter?? Ever since the majority was taught stories from the Mahavamsa and independence was granted to them without a single drop of blood being shed, they (the majority) became afflicted with hubris, swine flu and xenophobia and this disease has made this majority do weird racist things for the past 65 years.
As long as a cure for this disease is not found, this country will continue to be a “cant be developed country” and an island of eternal conflict.

You are talking of white washing terrorism, but what about almost all the media in the South white washing State terrorism? Why do they fail to see the war crimes commited, which the world class international media and well respected organisations like the Amnesty International can see?

Nalinda, are you not the CHIEF EDITOR of a STATE CONTROLLED NEWSPAPER?.As such you have no CREDIBILITY to spew venom on Councils controlled by the opposition. There are so many double-speaks in the other two Councils in the South where the Govt. controls after the recent elections. Sir, since you are not analyzing those, your zip is showing.

Whatever you and a vast majority of the Sinhalese may say, to an overwhelming majority of the Tamils, Pirabakaran is like William Wallace ( brave heart) an ever living hero living in their hearts and minds. Wigneswaran simply made a statement of this fact though he would have never endorsed VP’s methods of violence. Wigneswaran and the TNA are totally commited to non-violence and they fully believe in a negotiated settlement,if necessary with international support including India. How do you call this double speak?

Malinda forgets that batches of tamils were executed periodically by the armed forces commencing in 1954.
The July 1983 isandwide pogrom finally gave birth to tamil militancy.
    And,they were labelled ‘terrorists’.
Brutal State Terrorism was used to suppress even verbal dissent and complaints against killings – it was also used against mainly unarmed sinhala youth in 1971 and in 1987/88/89 – thousands were executed on the roads and even in their homes.
State Terorism is alive and well even today.
Tamils are now willing to forget the past and wish to live as absolute equals without harassment.
The newly elected NPC wishes the same.
    Even this is being denied.

Ah! here is Malinda again with his take on the activities and pronouncements of Justice Wigneswaran, a man he has deemed a closet racist and separatist. Treading the same path of the JHU, BBS, Sinhala Ravaya, mad Weerawansa et al, Malinda is trying to demonise Justice Wigneswaran even before he has had an opportunity to do anything as Chief Minister. Malinda appears to be fearing what the new CM might be able to achieve for the Tamil people no other Tamil politician could in the last 50 years.

I doubt Vignesweran is the foggy headed hypocrite as portrayed by Malinda. He must be well aware of what he is doing and saying. Just as Mahinda says things to suit the audience so does Vignes. What is said rings true to some people, though we all may not agree with it. Truth these days is not absolute. Thats democracy as Mahinda says, let everyone have his say but I will decide.

You should know more than most about “double-speak” – not to mention those “chauvinistic voices that reside in (your) head”. And who would you propose for “the clean hand from the other side”?

Your lines, “Talk about over-simplification and puerile efforts at whitewashing terrorism!” and “a happy caricaturist pandering to the lowest forms of chauvinism” suit YOU to the T!

Any chance of a piece from you on state-terrorists and the part of guys like you who either ignore the problem or do the “white-washing”?

It can be argued that the LTTE is only part of an overall project to systematically eliminate the Sinhala race, both in numbers and through effacement of culture, one way or the other.

Lets not be alarmist. Tamil nuisance would have fizzled out many moons ago had it not been for the alarmist reactions. Allow me elaborate.

What drives 50:50 demands and Chelva’s Tamil Homelands? Its the biggotted and casteist mindset that says “We should be ruling over Sinhalaese and low-caste Tamils”. These Tamils sincerely beleive they can do a better job! Thats what this is all about really. Seperatism is only the secondary motivation. Seperatism kicks in when they are denied their primary goal.

Where does this mindset come from? Its simply a projection of their primtive caste concsience over the rest of the island. It was isolated to Jaffna before. The Missonary education allowed it to be exported outside of Jaffna isnt it?

Well, now they have a chance to prove how good they are. Pandering to Fascisim showed the first failure. Allocation of seats showed caste discrimination. The failure at “oath ceromony” showed nepotism and religious biggatory. All that is left now is flow of money to fail with corruption.

This was a project that was never going to succeed. Let the Gon Demala be for now. Interference will only delay their failure. Just sit back and enjoy the show.

    Malinda says:
‘This is the perception with regard to Prabhakaran as far as the Tamil people here are concerned. He may have been brutal but so is the government, those who are now in for a war crime inquiry internationally. If the Sinhalese saw their war-time leaders as heroes, Tamils might conversely do the same.’

It is clear that Justice Wigneswaran did NOT refer to Prabhakaran as a hero, and he reflects the general view that both sides to the conflict did commit heinous crimes against human beings.

These carefully chosen words reflect the sad reality of a significant segment of Sri Lanka’s people, who have been discriminated against and subjugated since Lanka’s independence by successive leaders playing to the populist gallery, and for whose cause the so called liberation movement was born.

Malinda, you should be a little more responsible and channel your efforts to better things than continue to try to sabotage a fledgeling operation to bring some sanity to the current situation; from which hopefully something good for the entire country will emerge.

British Colonials to eliminate the Sinhala race big time, through conversion to Christianity and denying Education.

But 1.7 Million Sinhalese in 1817 has grown to 17 Million to date.

Catholic Church today is different because they have realized that the great majority of their followers are poor rural Sinhalese and it is impossible to eliminate their race by Westernizing them,

Western countries will be the home of more Srilankan Talims that Srilanka itself.

The only Tamils left behind will be the poor, rural inhabitants whom one may call non Vallalas.

Going forward, Sinhala and Muslim populations will grow significantly, whilst the Tamil population will decrease with more and more migration for family reunion and economic reasons.

An educated person , let alone an ex HC worth his salt would know that.

Whether they accept this reality and make things easy for the inhabitants to live in peace and harmony ,sharing the common resources in an equitable manner remains to be seen.

The problem is the Colombo black-white Sinhala politicians who thrives cheating Sinhala Buddhists and poor Christians.

    Three things they should do:

    1. Teach Sinhala and Tamil to all school children
    2. Remove the nine province colonial division and divide Sri Lanka as seven river basin regions, starting with hydrology based GSN units.

This way even if Wigneswaran is not honest there will be no room for thinking as if there is a Tamil homeland
    3. Remove 13-A which accepts that there is a Tamil homeland in Sri Lanka

Wigneswaran is the best thing Tamils got and best thing MahindaR got who is caught between a frying pan and fire. Any bad move by Wigenswaran with Indian RAW and Ms. Sission will be the end of MahindaR politics.

Just a look at Mr. Milinda’s face is enough to demonstrate that he is an out an out chauvanist of the worst kind. Perhaps it comes from the fact that he looks more like a tamil than a kandyan sinhalese. he seems to be afraid that they may burn him alive in the next riots against the tamils.,.

They feel insecure that there might be some joining together of Tamil Nadu and north-eastern Sri Lanka.

It’s important to understand that this statement only rejects pan-tamil nationalism (the idea that Tamils on both sides of the palk strait are one homogenous group and they seek to establish a pan-tamil state). It is absolutely NOT a rejection of an independent NE. The statement simply affirms that an independent NE will not join up with Tamil Nadu. Resources in the NE including fishing resources will not be shared with Tamil Nadu.

It’s true that the Sinhalese do not have any other land other than SL. It’s also true that the Jaffna Tamil people have no other land other than Jaffna (and the tamil speaking lands of the NE).

    “Wigneswaran’s Double-Speak And Dilemmas”

Can you give an example of a Sinhalese leader who has spoken with Single-Speak?

Sinhalese at least have a country but Tamils do not have a country. Sinhalese have a state and a security establishment to protect Sinhalese, but Tamils do not. Tamils and Sinhalese lived in this island for long to be considered as the citizens of this island. Tamils have been living in the north East for long and Sinhalese have been living in the South west for long. Tamils and Sinhalese both opposed the colonial occupation and both should share this land. Since the colonial rule was ended each and every citizen should have same level of security and protection by the government. Unfortunately, the government formed in this island failed in protecting North East Tamil speaking people and discriminated them in order to favour Southern people because the people took leadership was from South and they speak different language and religion to the people of North.

If you apply the criteria for “Terrorism” then you can categorize this under three categories under chronological order.
    1. State terrorism: This is the first kind of terrorism this island experienced since 1956 and continues until now.
    2. JVP terrorism: This is the the second in order took place in 1970-71 and 1989-90 both against state.
    3. LTTE, Paramilitary and State Terrorism : Since 1983, Tamil youths took up arms against State terrorism and this have lead to multi lateral, multi-factor dimensional terror affecting all citizens of the island irrespective of race.

No one has the moral power to distinguish between these groups in terms of terror and describe one is better than the other.

    Dear Malinda,

Before criticizing Wigneswaran,or Sampanthan or LTTE, why don’t you analyse the behaviour of your leaders and your community asking few questions:

Are we right to introduce Sinhala only policy?
Are we right to throw the Banda-Chelva, Dudley_Chelva agreements?
Are we right to kill innocent Tamils in Colombo in 1958, 1977 and 1983?
Are we right to burn the Jaffna library?
Are we right to bomb the Navali church, Chencholai children home?
Are we right to massacre thousands of Tamils in the No-fire zone?
Are we right use military to threat the candidates contested in the PC elections?
Are we right to kill number of journalists?
Are we right to rape innocent tamil women?
Are we right to use white vans to kidnap and kill those NGO’s and former parliamentarians Joseph Pararajasingham and Raviraj?
What happen to our law and order system and justice system?
Don’t we have a moral duty to protect civilians and provide unbalanced justice. We have a government, we have the powers, we have a religion but why don’t be humans? Why we have to behave like animals?

If you answer these questions you will find the truth!

Malinda’s son will be untouched by Christianity as much has Malinda has remained untouched by Western Education while escaped the frying pan that his his JVP sahaordarys in Peradeniya were broiling in during the JVP crisis. When it was over, he returned as the true son of the soil and remains intact to this day, pouring venom on the rest on behalf of the Singhala Buddhist – whom he assumes requires his services.

Mr Wigneswaran’s description of the LTTE leader, V. Prabhakaran, as a hero shows very poor judgement, it seems to me. The best we can do is hope that he made this statement while not really believing in it only to try to win the votes of the remaining LTTE die-hards still in the north.

However, despite the so-called “landslide” election win, the TNA and ITAK are on very weak ground and need to think deeply about their real political position. For if they do not act realistically, the rest of the island has one unbeatable course of action which the northern separatists cannot prevent. That move is what nations with stubborn and bothersome minorities have done throughout history: state sponsorship of migration of loyal people from other parts of the island into the troublesome region to change the region’s demographics. Is that what the TNA want to provoke?

Are not the Sinhalese false converts ? Their ancient mothers were Pandyan women. 500 hundred of them according to Sinhalese records. Any idea how they converted to be Sinhalese ?
