“PDAS Steven Mann, accompanied by Ambassador and Pol Chief, met Defense Secretary Gothabaya Rajapaksa on March 8. Gothabaya, noting that an overwhelming majority of Sinhalese Buddhists had voted for Mahinda Rajapaksa in 2005, told us that his brother’s popularity among the majority community was still strong. However, Sri Lanka’s system of proportional representation in Parliament meant that the President’s party would never secure an absolute majority on its own. This, he explained, had made it necessary to create such a big cabinet to satisfy everyone. Mann responded that the President’s considerable political skills and his strong support made him the right leader to make progress on a solution to Sri Lanka’s ethnic problem. The U.S. hoped that the new power-sharing proposals that emerge form the current consultation process would be of a quality that hadn’t been seen before.” the US Embassy Colombo informed Washington.
The Colombo Telegraph found the related leaked cable from the WikiLeaks database. The cable is classified as “Confidential” and recounts a meeting the US Embassy had with the Secretary to the Ministry of Difence Gotabhaya Rajapaksa. The cable was written on March 14, 2007 by the US Ambassador to Colombo Robert O. Blake.
“Defense Secretary Gothabaya Rajapaksa told visiting SCA PDAS Steven Mann that the government was certain that the LTTE was not interested in a political solution to Sri Lanka’s ethnic conflict. Nevertheless, he said, the government would try to reach out to the Tamil populations, bypassing the LTTE leadership. The security forces were finding it difficult to choke off LTTE resupply of arms and ammunition, but would redouble its efforts. Security forces would seek to consolidate their hold on the East by drviing the LTTE out of its remaining base in Thoppigala, then replace troops in the cities with police and Special Task Force units. He said the Karuna group was not a partner of the government in military operations, but that he saw no problem with the Karuna faction transforming itself into a mainstream political party. The government would try to push the LTTE back in the Vavuniya sector in order to control LTTE infiltration and secure the overland route to Mannar. Then it would press the LTTE to retrun to the negotiating table.” the US Embassy further wrote.

The West with US at the helm after 9/11 had decided to settle issues in Asia with reference to Terrorism coercing India in to confidence. As for the Sri Lanka conflict first they thought they will be able to settle the issue with a Peace Agreement combindly proposed by them and put RW to deliver with the promise of a Aid Package for development. When they realised the foolishness of the Sinhala masses led by MR who would obstruct such a settlement and the intransigency of VP and the LTTE, they decided to go with the Devil(MR) himself to settle the issue by getting VP to help MR to become the President with the obvious promise of a settlement in VP’s favour. What happened with a staged War Victory to MR, where VP was eliminated being asked to surrender and replaced by KP, still efforts are being made to settle the issue between the two communities. The push given by the world powers to MR shielding him from all charges of Human Rights levelled at him by all Peace bodies, yet a solution has been found to the issue. Instead the Sinhalese have gone beyond the Tamil issue and today MR is hiding behind the Muslim issue and a desperate situation has arisen and the problems are more complicated than before. It appears the Western Forces still have not given up on MR without getting the goods delivered and is playing ball with him protecting him and pandering him with CHOGM. It is interesting to see how far the West will tolerate MR till he is kicked out in the end. The situation is best described as Diamond cutting Diamond.

Hey, People of the country are mouthshut – they dont even raise the question while state media institutions succeed of putting all the censu on free of speech freedom. Lately, former owner of SLeader made an open statement that he has no any rights to decide what would the paper bring.

If the ballot papers that repeatedly came to surface could have been closely investigated, if OPPosition worked on that, but for them they were not prima facie evidence. Anyway, hansard will share us all how our OPppostion have been while allowing idiotic uneducated bunch to lead the country to ruins.

Firstly MR was never elected, EU knew very well who won and in some media published the actual winner in EU. Then Thanks to computer jilmat actual scenario changed. And the other thin is sad to see a country like USA make such foolish remarks to recommend MR to be the ideal leader. Some year back USA even allowed any person to get in to the flight to bid farewell to loved ones … until they realised that the terrorism is at their own back yard. Finally I like to ask how wise are the Sri Lankan voters to make the right decision?

usual the US got it very wrong again. Mahinda is the wrong leader to resolve the ethnic issue. He had a golden opportunity no other Sri Lankan leader had in 30 years of strife and he blew it big time. The man will go down in history not as a leader who defeated the LTTE but as a leader responsible for giving Sri Lanka eternal ethnic problems, making the country a pariah state and making the people slaves in their own country.
