A writer campaigning against moves to bring women into mixed-gender work environments
Abu Dhabi: A Saudi writer has urged his Twitter followers to sexually molest women hired to work as cashiers in big grocery stores, the latest backlash from conservatives who want to roll back limited social and economic reforms launched in Saudi Arabia.
Al Dawood, who has more than 97,000 followers on Twitter, justified his call to harass female workers by using an obscure story from the early days of Islam about a famous warrior, Al Zubair, who did not want his wife to leave home to pray in the mosque. Al Dawood claimed that Al Zubair hid in the dark one night and molested his wife in the street. The wife rushed home and decided against ever going out of her house again, saying that the “there is no safer place than home and the world out there is corrupt”.

The prophet didn’t have a son called Zaid. Zaid was prophets adopted son.
Even in that case, the prophet never called/ allowed calling Zaid by “Zaid, son of Mohammed” which is the customary way of addressing one in arabic. this was even while zaid was with the prophet and zaid was one of the favorite aids of the prophet. And yet, Sri Lanka supposedly has a law against sexual harassment. What does that say about Sri Lanka’s gender attitudes?
Meanwhile, Al Dawood has retracted his offensive Tweet, claiming that it has been misinterpreted. Read about it online. He probably realises now that he is out of date in his thinking, just as you are out of date in the nature of your trolls. The ME has a long way to go towards learning to respect its women, but India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and our own Sri Lanka, also have a lot to learn.

The attitude towards sexuality in India and Sri Lanka is somewhat misguided for two reasons: (1) the invasion of India by the Moghul Muslim barbarians, and (2) the introduction of Victorian mannerisms to Sri Lanka by the British, and the presence of Muslims in Sri Lanka. Before the Moghuls invaded India, India was sexually open. All of this rubbish about women preserving their virginity, dressing modestly, not being seen in public with random men, etc. are alien customs introduced by the Islamic invaders.
Sri Lanka suffered less than India, since it has a smaller population and there is no caste in Buddhism. But still, some of the Victorian customs and puritanical Christian customs were picked up. Kandyan and low-country women did not cover their chests until the Portugese arrived. It was also common for married Kandyan men and women to have many (sexual) partners.
Apart from Sri Lanka, it is only the misguided view of sexuality found exclusively in the Abrahamic religions that has caused many societies to suppress women. The kind of male chauvinism that one finds in Christianity and Islam is entirely absent in the Eastern religions.

Read up and study the nature of racism, to understand what is going on in your own mind. Also read up on scapegoating, because this particular feature has the potential to develop into very ugly forms like Nazism.
From the Buddhist lens, this life is but a temporary sojourn in a continuum of lives. Human life is precious. It is better to use it in a more meaningful manner, and to create a better world for all of us and our children. Ultimately, the universe does not take sides or favour one over the other – rather, your intent defines your future. Be careful, because creating loathing in others has the potential to attract to you a life, a future, of being subjected to loathing.

A few instances? No. Try very many instances. In the case of Denmark, Sweden, Holland, France, and England, there is a direct correlation between rising numbers of Islamic immigrants and an increase in violent crime. The best way to see this is to look at an uber-liberal, once homogenous nation like Sweden, and see what happens when they start importing large numbers of unskilled mostly Muslim immigrants from 3rd world countries. The bottom line is that these immigrants do not have the skills to succeed in a highly progressive nation like Sweden. They form ghettos and live off of generous government subsidies. Eventually the young get restless and start turning to crime. The religion of these people is also a barrier to integration. Wearing a niqab (bedsheet) in Sweden, for example, makes no sense. Swedes are open about sexuality, to the extent that males and females share the same space in a sauna, while nude beaches are also quite common. Swedes are big drinkers, e.g. consume alcohol in large quantities. In general, Islamic immigration to Sweden is a 10/10 failure. Denmark has already changed its immigration laws; I have no doubt that Sweden will do the same eventually.

I have heard this liberal talk before and do not particularly care for it. The central problem is this: there is a giant wall between liberal Western values and Islamic values. Islam is a barrier to assimilation. That is why the Muslims chose to have Pakistan over India, Malaysia over Malaysia-Singapore, and Kosova over Serbia. If the Muslims reached 50% of the population in Sri Lanka, they would start asking for their own nation. Many of the Western countries have been able to “absorb” large numbers of Muslim immigrants for the sole reason that these countries are BIG. Examples: USA, Canada, Germany, England and France. So, as I suggested earlier, we have to look at the small countries to see how well Islamic immigrants (or Muslims in general assimilate). Singapore, Denmark, Sweden, Israel, Serbia, Italy, Switzerland and Sri Lanka all prove that in case, the answer is a resounding no. Here is another thought: small countries with relatively homogenous populations should not blindly follow larger countries when it comes to immigration. The results can be disastrous.

Saudi is a conservative society. It’s their problem. Yes, there are restriction on women sports activities etc., authentic stories of which you will find from original documentary videos on the internet. But then there is also reviewing of culture to suit the demands of the times with the aid of technology. At least in reality there is less avenues for sexual harassment in those places than the US where statistics report a 1/5th of female citizens to be expected to have been sexually harassed, while in Sri Lanka even the perpetrators of a daylight rape and killing of citizens of former super powers are yet to be brought under the law, even after a year!

Kingdom proud of its Top 10 achievers in 2012 – Arab News
The year 2012 was a remarkable one for Saudi women. Many challenged their closed society and made the country proud with new inventions, researches and initiatives. We have compiled a list of 10 Saudi women who have reflected the development of Saudi society in the most spectacular way throughout the year.
1. Majda Abu Ras
Abu Ras is the first Arab woman to become a NASA researcher. In 2010, NASA appointed her as a member of the regional research team considering her national initiatives to protect the environment. Abu Ras is an academic who holds a doctorate degree in environmental studies and biotechnology from a UK university and a member of NASA’s scientific team. She is also the deputy executive manager of the Saudi Environmental Society.
2. Princess Ameera Al-Taweel
Al-Taweel was in top of the list of the most accomplished young leaders under the age of 30, according to a report by Gulf Business magazine. The list included 30 people from different fields who have a positive impact on the local community.
Al-Taweel is the vice chairperson of Alwaleed bin Talal Foundation, which supports billion dollar programs for poverty alleviation, disaster relief, women’s empowerment, and interfaith dialogue across the world.
3. Hayat Sindi
The UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has recently appointed Sindi as goodwill ambassador to support science education, especially among girls. Sindi’s nomination comes in recognition of her work to create an ecosystem of entrepreneurship and social innovation for scientists, technologists, and engineers in the Middle East and beyond; her efforts to bring the youth closer to innovators; and her dedication to the ideals and aims of the organization.
Sindi has made major contributions to point-of-care diagnostics, medical testing at or near the site of patient care, specifically designed for the vast number of people who do not have access to hospitals and medical facilities.
She made this contribution through the invention of a biochemical sensor with thermo-elastic probes and her development of the Magnetic Acoustic Resonance Sensor.
4. Haifaa Al-Mansour
One of the main highlights of the Venice Film Festival 2012 is “Wadjda”, the first film to have been entirely filmed within Saudi Arabia by the wonderful Saudi director Haifaa Al-Mansour. Wadjda has won Best Arabic Feature Film at the Dubai International Film Festival and her lead actress, Waad Mohammed, has won best Female Arabic Actress for her role.
Saudi Arabia’s first woman filmmaker studied literature at the American University in Cairo and film at the University of Sydney.
Wadjda is considered the first feature movie that is completely shot in Saudi Arabia — more precisely in Riyadh — and it will only be available in the Kingdom on DVD or on television.
Al-Mansour had previously directed three short movies and the award-winning documentary “Women Without Shadows”, which explores the hidden lives of Gulf women.
5. Rajaa Alem
Alem is the first woman winner of the international Prize for Arabic Fiction, also known as the Arabic Booker, with her novel “The Dove’s Necklace” in 2011.
The novel pays tribute to old Makkah, which faces the difficult challenges of modern times. In its opening pages, Alem puts a voice to an alleyway in Makkah, which laments that the people disregard its experiences. She writes about characters inspired by her family and childhood memories of the hordes of people dressed in the same humble clothes of those that swarmed her city during last year’s busy holy season of Haj. The family home of her upbringing used to be on a mountain that no longer exists today. The Dove’s Necklace is dedicated to this.
6. Lubna Olayan
Olayan is the first Saudi woman to enter the business field to keep the Saudi economy moving instead of stacking her millions frozen in the bank. She succeeded in putting all social barriers aside and unleashed her ambition, becoming today the leader of all Saudi companies with estimated capital worth $10 billion. In May 2012, King of Sweden Carl XVI Gustaf has awarded Olayan with the insignia of Member First Class of the Royal Order of the Polar Star for contributions to the furthering of good relations between Sweden and Saudi Arabia.
7. Moudi Al-Khalaf
Al-Khalaf is the first Saudi woman to be assigned as the assistant attaché for the Saudi Cultural and Social Affairs in the United States. In addition to her job, she is the editor in chief of Almubtaath magazine in the state of Virginia. Her duties at the attaché include taking care of the well-being of tens of thousands of students and their families. She has a Ph.D. in applied linguistics.
8. Abeer Al-Namankany
Al-Namankany is a Saudi dentist who developed a new standard to measure anxiety in dental patients. She is specialized in hypnosis, child psychology and pediatric dentistry. She is an extremely dedicated researcher with a specific interest in young patients who show signs of dental fear, anxiety, phobia, and other behavioral problems.
The European Academy of Pediatric Dentistry in Switzerland has selected her as one of the top five young researchers among 450 at the European United level. Her research was nominated as the best research of 2012.
9. Badriya Al-Bishr
Al-Bishr is a famous Saudi columnist who recently won the Arab Press Price for best columnist for its editorial of a clear example of the work aimed to contribute to the upgrading of the reader’s conscious.
“Marry a Saudi” is Al-Bishr’s latest book, which is being displayed in the Riyadh Book Fair. The book is the first of a series of upcoming follow-ups by Al-Bishr and contains a number of her columns she published throughout the years. It has 210 pages and more than 100 columns varying from political and human interest to social topics.
10. Dr. Samia Al-Amoudi
Al-Amoudi is the first GCC woman to win a prestigious seat in the Union for the International Cancer Control’s (UICC) board of directors. The announcement was made at a conference in Montreal, Canada.
The seat will enable Al-Amoudi to acquire expert opinions and views of the cancer community to the global stage of the UICC at its headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, and gain an official reaction from the World Health Organization (WHO) and UN’s special Economic and Social Council (ECOSCO).
Al-Amoudi plans to take this chance to collaborate in the areas of advocacy and awareness, exchange knowledge with international organizations, and gain experience as a great asset to further our efforts in the area of cancer in the GCC. She is one of 14 newly elected members of the UICC board of directors from countries such as the US, Mexico, Canada, Brazil, India, Jordan, France, Norway and Japan. All members will serve a two-year term beginning this year.

dude leela, quran isn’t a cookbook to give you recipes on how to make a cup of tea etc, it rather presumes you have a brain still functional. people who read quran for what it is know the fact that there have been tens or even hundreds of pharaohs while there term used is firawn to mention one specific person all throughout the book. as such it’s not your history book or science book or a book that details you the landscape of the heavens and the hell. for people who scan quran for the purposes you do, it’s the best in leading them to where they deserve it too.

Wealthy Arabs throw money at every luxury known to man: foreign women, cars, ski trips, palaces… yet the “religious police” in these countries will beat a woman for showing an ankle in public. Remember, Islam began in the desert. Unlike Christianity and Judaism, it did not have the benefit of Greek, Roman, and European influence. Many Jews today, for example do not hesitate to call themselves atheist, while one sect of Christians (Protestants) have allowed women to become priests. There is no atheist trend in Islam; nor is the question of women’s rights debated (except when asking if women have too many rights). In other words, there is no secular movement in Islam. That is why out of all the religions on earth today, only Islam is waging a religious war against the West.

I have exchanged their views according to the way I could (as I did not understand Arabic) and I found what their thinking are. Just imagine you are a son of one of your Father’s wives and the rest of his wives are either in the same house or in different houses. How many days you get to see him and you know the purpose as to why he married more than one woman. We call the camels when we see all the wives walk behind one old looking husband when they go to malls.
All I could witness was that those Saudies were mere Proud, Swolen head, do nothing, know nothing, even cannot communicate in English bunch of excess money wasters.
I have also spoken to some Women discreetly (both Sri Lankan and Foreign domestic workers) who work there in Saudi and their response towards those Saudies were not good.
I think the youths in other Gulf countries such as Dubai, Bahrain and Oman are more liberal and humane and more down to earth. Just look at the statistics of harassments and Deaths our women face in Saudi Arabia.
All I say is Govt. to either reduce or stop sending our domestic workers to Saudi Arabia because what this writer say is truly happening there. This was told to me by the Saudies themselves while humiliating our Sri Lankan women.
Also what I herd was that Saudi Married women prefer and encourage their husbands to sleep with domestic workers to fulfill their carnal desires than authorise them to marrying another Saudi wife due to paying additional Dowry and also wealth been shared with a second and third and fourth wives. Saudi women are smart thinkers by killing two birds with one shot.
All I say is Saudis will dance as long as oil is there. But things could change rapidly even before that, and one day their women could end up tasting our Sri Lankan rice and curry in Sri Lanka.

I whole heartedly, agree with you Mahela. No, doubt you too, will agree with me, when I say that it happens mostly with uneducated, poor Saudis. The majority of Saudis are poor. They cannot even afford a proper meal and we Sri Lankans pack our women to work for them.
The rich and the educated Saudies, do not hire Sri Lankans. They prefer someone from the Philippines or Indonesia who can converse in English. They are treated very well and paid well. Reason – very professional diplomatic missions who take care of their people, do their ground work and maintain strict conditions like minimum wage, medical insurance, annual holiday tickets etc. It is not easy to hire someone from the Philippines and Indonesia, it is costly too.
I have also seen how Sri Lankan expatriates treat their Sri Lankan maids. Salaries are paid in SL Rupees, no day off, no proper place to sleep, work from early morning till late night and sadly, there are instances where Sinhala mahaththayas have raped Sri Lankan maids and continued to have sex – check Dubai court records.
So, we have evil every where. If Saudi Arabia was a poor country, this would not have been an issue and no one would be talking about it.

Now one might wonder what is this reward is: Surat 52:17-20,22 and 55:70,72,74 talks about the reward; how fruits, meat and drinks, and boys like pearls and fair women with lovely eyes are provided for Jihadis to have all the happiness as they desire in heaven. The truth is, Muhammad had stimulated Muslims with lewd pleasure and dirty promises to kill the Jews, Christians and unbelievers. Is Muhammad the prophet of Allah or Satan?
Anyway, no Sura explains how happiness is brought to Muslim women who end up in Allah’s heaven. All indications are that women who go there do not cover themselves with billa dress but recline on thrones arranged in ranks to get laid with Jihadis.

In my job, I was required to travel to KSA regularly. I had multiple entry business visa for Saudi Arabia for two years, which was issued every three/six months depending on the mood of the Foreign Ministry officials. I have travelled alone, stayed at the Four Seasons Kingdom Tower in Riyadh where our office was. Never felt uncomfortable travelling alone. Had to wear the abaya but was told I need not cover my head as a non-resident. Have travelled alone in taxies for meetings, without facing any issues. Have shopped alone at the Kingdom Mall – never felt uncomfortable.
The Immigration officers have been very kind to me and they are happy when they meet a Muslim woman travelling to KSA on business. They check my name and say ‘Mashallah’, when returning the passport.
As someone, who has worked closely with Saudis. I have a lot of respect for them. They have been respectful, kind and helpful to me.
I am surprised at the comments made about the Arabs and Saudi Arabia in general, by people who have not even stepped into that country.
No one is perfect and yes, they have to go along way, just like us !
