2017 will be the year in which the future of Sri Lanka will be decided. The government’s devolution package to divide the country into what they call ‘distinct spheres of authority’, the ETCA with India to open up Sri Lanka to Indian service providers and workers, the privatisation of the Hambantota harbour and other government owned assets, are just some of the unwelcome changes that the government has planned in the new year. All this will come on top of the gross economic mismanagement, declining growth rate, declining foreign reserves, the deteriorating exchange rate, increased taxation, increased interest rates, increasing inflation and a phenomenal increase in the national debt that we have seen over the past two years.
The SLFP members in the government who were elected to parliament on an anti-UNP, anti-government platform, but have since joined the UNP led government, now appear to be engaged in a struggle with their conscience. Uncertain of the correct path to take, they keep vacillating. While condemning Arjuna Mahendran over the bond scam they defend the Prime Minister. They criticise the UNP in public but vote with them on the VAT Bill, the Office of Missing Persons Bill and the Budget. They cooperate with the Joint Opposition to defeat the ‘super minister’ Bill, but at the same time they cooperate with the UNP on the devolution proposals. At this decisive moment, they should be mindful of the future of the country above everything else.
Those who hold portfolios and vote with the government on important matters, are members of the government despite any criticism they may make in public about other political parties and ministers in the government. There are many Ministers and MPs in the SLFP group as well as the UNP who are genuinely perturbed by what the government has been doing. When the leaders of the Joint Opposition so decide, the doors of the anti-government coalition of forces will be thrown open to all such individuals. The sovereignty and territorial integrity of our motherland and the fate of future generations will hang in the balance in 2017 under this increasingly dysfunctional government. May all citizens of Sri Lanka have the courage and strength to meet the challenges that lie ahead from the first week of January onwards.

Nevertheless,I wonder why this man is still so popular in Sri Lanka and among the expatriate Sri Lankan community. Whether we like it or not he will possibly be elected prime minister within the next few years when an election is held! So far nobody can say that with figures because the current government has postponed all major elections citing funny reasons.
I’m not taking any side but we all know ex-prez Rajapaksa did one thing very well: i.e. defeating terrorism decisively in this tiny island of SL. He was not scared of the threats made by powerful politicians in the West, and because of that very reason he became a target of a hate campaign launched by opportunistic local politicians and their Western and Indian masters. His good work was overshadowed by shady deals done by his so-called aquaintances and family members.
However, I can never forget that I live in Sri Lankan today safely because he made it to be one of the safest place on earth. Our expatriate Tamil brothers and sisters may not be happy about this but that’s the truth!
The thefts, looting, other misdemeanors he has been accused of doing or helping to do, will be judged by the history because even the current government with so much ‘power & noise’ has so far failed to make a decision on those allegations!
In fact the Central Bank bond scam has overshadowed all those previous allegations/accusations. That’s why 2017 is crucial for SL!

Mother land- Hectares by hectares encroached, or threaten the parties that own valuable mother land into selling to the king and his family so mother land is no more in balance, but will balance the future needs of my future generation.
Future Generations- will have ride on white vans if they see anything abnormal about smart patriotism, there wont be a ‘balance’ issue.

The second international airport in the country – stands on 2,000 hectares of land. Although Rs. 39,600 million was spent on this project, international airlines refused to land there.
So is the Magampura International Port in Hambantota built at a cost of US$413 million. Overlooking the port is another white elephant – the Magam Ruhunupua International Conference Hall costing US$15.3 million. The only international event that was held at this conference hall was in 2013, 9th Youth Forum of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM). Mahinda Rajapaksa International Cricket Stadium in Suriyawewa is yet another white elephant project. Built in a 47 acre land at a cost of Rs. 700 million, the stadium was declared open in 2011 for the World Cup matches. All of them have become massive burden to the country’s Treasury. The same Mahinda Rajapaksa refused to rebuild or repair a single house in the Northeast destroyed during the war pleading lack of funds! It is the tears shed by the war victims, especially widows the women who lost their husbands and sons/daughters during the war that destroyed Mahinda Rajapaksa. To him the Tamil people were not citizens of the country and far as he is concerned they did not exist at all.
