Asigiriya Thera’s Call To Stone Muslims, A Talibanization Of Buddhism: Mangala

Mangala Samaraweera condemning calls by Asigiri Chief Prelate to stone Muslims, says the hateful words by the monk is a ‘Talibanization’ of Buddhism and that no Buddhist can condone a call to stone another human to death.

Publishing a tweet from his official Twitter account this morning, Mangala says now is the time for true Buddhists to unite against the religion from being tainted by violent extremism.

Mangala reminds the Buddhist community that it goes against all Buddhist principles and beliefs to condone a statement to stone another human being to death, even if it emanates from monks.

Below is his tweet:

True Buddhists must unite NOW against the Talibanization of our great philosophy of peace & love of all beings. No Buddhist can condone a statement to stone another human being to death, even if it emanates from the robed orders.

Mangala so far has been the only politician to issue a public rejection and condemnation of the Asgiri thera’s anti-Muslim speech made on Sunday, that blessed violence against Muslims.

Despite availability of video proof of the speech, Warakagoda Sri Gnanarathana still remains immune to being charged with violating the ICCPR Act.

I believe that history provides clear evidence that true Bhuddists have always risen up against all sort of vile manipulators such as thugs, liars, thieves and hypocrites in the past elections. 2015 is a classic example. They even kicked out that ‘great king MR’,who brought peace to the country who could have been king for ever for all communities if he was not a hypocrite and fell for vices unbecoming of an Buddhist. His speech in Parliament soon after the war ended was a moment that could’ve made him and the country truly great for all citizens regardless of their race, religion or caste. Oh what a crime you committed MR, listen to your self!

As such I still believe that the true Buddhists are not stupid to forget what a great philosophy they have been privileged to follow. You can’t hood wink them with these lies, mis-information and division sown by these manipulative hatemongers. They do not get fooled by the corrupt media, politicians, monks and fall for their quiet stupid traps. I mean who with half a brain doesn’t already know that most of what’s being said about ALL Muslims are innuendo and hear-say? What’s all this fuss about Zaharan’s terror, Dr. Shafi or the Ministers got to do with the entire peaceful Muslim population? Gnanasara’s frustrations are clear example that true Bhuddists arn’t falling for his stupidity even after so many years. As such, when the going gets tough again, they will do what a true Bhuddist will do. That is my belief!

This is not to venture into racism ……… but just to point out the zaniness of what this esteemed Asgiriya gentleman is saying.

All Lankan “Sinhalese-Buddhists” are converts of/from one form or the other.

The Rajapakses are Malaysian Muslim immigrants who have converted themselves in to “Sinhalese-Buddhists.”

If this Asgiri Einstein wants to stone Muslims he should look no further; first start with the Rajapakses. I’ll supply him the stones!

But he wants to make them president!

Well, the Lankans aren’t renowned for their logic. ………. or …………

He is a renowned head of a Lankan Buddhist chapter

If he wanted food I’d give him the best food available ……… if he wanted water I’d give him the best water ……..

He doesn’t want any of that ………. he wants stones

Who am I to deny him? ……….. I’ll hand him the best stones available ……….. I’ll make sure I’ll avoid Muslim shops and get them from a Sinhalese shop or a Tamil shop.

In Lanka, everyone gives what the Buddhist leaders want ……… Do you think I want to get stoned?

I may be dumb but I ain’t stupid!

It’s good of Mangala to have bravely spoken up!

Not a boo from Ranil or Mahinda!

Ranil is like the guy (Michel Palin) in some Monty Python movie …….. who gets whipped mercilessly by his master …….. but keeps jumping up and down with a big smile on his face shouting …….. “Whip me more, whip me more, master; I like it.”

Tomorrow he’ll go and fall down at his feet with some offerings and talk some sweet nothings! ……… see no evil; hear no evil …….. if they are Buddhist priests; just kiss their feet and butts.

No, used to hate him. Dated a girl named Caroline who was a big fan! Broke up; couldn’t take “Sweet Caroline” ………. and “Song Sung Blue” anymore.

Thank ye lucky stars Buddhist gals don’t have to walk around all covered-up ……. Buddhist men don’t (or pretend not to) get tempted …….. Muslim guys just can’t handle it, and it’s the gals fault!

                  Native,

“My all times favorites Freddie Silva, Milton Mallawarachchi”

I only know Aton Jones ……… a cassette was given a long time ago by a Lankan guest who came to my house for dinner …….. I never listened to it until recently ……. now I play it few times a week for exercise …… I collect vintage audio gear mainly tube/valve amplifiers. I have a Nakamichi RX-505 which pops the cassette out and turns it at the end of the tape ……. so I don’t have to miss a beat in my Baila routine! ….. I’ll wipe the floor with all you guys if I ever run into any of you at a Lankan dance. Old Codger beware!

                  “Jim Reeves”

He is a favourite of many old Lankans.

I mostly listen to Jazz (mainly innovative stuff :)) ) ……… try Albert Ayler …….. start with “Goin’ Home” ……. just brilliant; like Lankan funeral bands!

And some Blues …. Try Big Joe Turner “Every Day I Have The Blues” and ” Patcha, Patcha All Night Long” …… mainly for the obscure blues guitarist Pee Wee Crayton who wipes the floor with many other better known blues guitarists.

If you like Jim Reeves …….. try Ben Webster “Soulville” and any of Lester Young’s ( Lester is an early innovative genius ….. light and airy as opposed to Coleman Hawkins et al )

One of my all time favourites ……… Van Morrison’s “Astral Weeks” ……… try his “Common One.”

                    Native,

Search for “The Mystery behind the Creation of Van Morrison’s Astral Weeks Album” on YouTube.

It explains how the music came about. It’s a seasoned Jazz ensemble playing Van’s “sorta Irish” music.

Thank you very much for the information on Van Morrison’s Astral Weeks Album. In order to understand the content of the clip I needed advanced training in Musical arrangement or become a member of Van Morrison fan club (appreciation society)..

                      However it’s a great experience.

What do you think about Leonard Cohen’s music as he also seem to display the samey-ness throughout his work that Van complained about?

                      Native,

Cohen, There is a great collection of songs in “The Essential Leonard Cohen;” perhaps all what you need. I like the later stuff on 2nd disk; the musical arrangements and the lyrics, especially “In My Secret Life.” Listen to the sax on “Like A Bird On A Wire” in his London Concerts. Joe Cocker does a good version of it and Lana Del Rey, Chelsea Hotel.

I think his manager played him out (as usual :)) ) and he had to do some tours to make some money ……… he was just going through the motions; wasn’t interested and things got very pretentious.

                      OC,

                      ” Hallelujah!”

Have you listened to the version by Jeff Buckley?

                      “Jim Reeves”

We had an old uncle who had a big Radiogram (remember them?) and all Jim’s records. The Radiogram had a “stacker” where you can load-up all the records. He used to cook a mean liver curry with pineapple. We used to get invited for dinners of string-hoppers (good they were not hoppers …… I would’ve ended up stabbing Native in the back.) The dinners were great but an entire night of Jim Reeves was too much to take!

                      Native,

Forgot to add ……… if you want to listen to another great artist, try Tom Waits ……. there is a YouTube clip of him singing “A House Where Nobody Lives” ……. great stuff, but reckon it’s an acquired taste. Mostly NY stories like Woody Allen’s movies.

Anaga this monk is very emboldened, as despite the court order the occupying Sinhalese police and armed forces are openly supporting this monks activities and harassing the Hindu priest and Tamil devotees . They even installed CCTV to monitor and harass anyone who visits the temple . Huge loud speakers and Buddhist flags on poles surround this ancient Hindu temple. I have a feeling the archeological department well known for its Sinhalese Buddhist Fascist activities is also involved in these activities. They are going around identifying all ancient , historically significant Hindu shrines in the north and east , even if they are very small and are trying to use the Sinhalese state’s might and fake history concocted by the archeological department , to erase the ancient history of the Eelam Tamils and Tamil Naga , so the island can be declared a Sinhalese Buddhist Fascist land. In the east and parts of the north , fake Arab immigrant refugee South Indian origin Wahhabi/Salafists have joined in this. They are converting Hindu shrines to mosques, shopping centres or beef stalls. This why they do not want the Kalmunai North Tamil division to be established , as they want to steal these lands. Ironic the indigenous Tamils are now fighting to save their own lands and temples from out of area Sinhalese colonists and extremists, who are backed by the Sinhalese state and armed forces and fake Arab South Indian origin Muslim Wahhabis , who arrived in the Tamil north and east as refugees fleeing persecution and have now bred like rats and with funds from certain Gulf nations have started to persecute and steal the land of the people who gave them refuge/asylum. In the meantime the Indian Armed forces are having cordial mutual visits with the Sinhalese racist armed forces and visiting Buddhist temples and inviting the Sri Lankan armed forces to visit Indian Buddhist sites , whilst ancient Hindu temples are being destroyed in the Tamil areas by the Buddhist and Muslims with the help of this same armed forces.

At least most intellectual Sri Lankan’s should appreciate and start to think what Minister Mangala is saying. These are facts and Sri Lankan’s must embrace if the country is going to come out of the political rut. Face the Truth for once. Hiding behind the religious bigotry is not the answer.

Mangala is a forward thinking, fearless politician capable of calling a spade a spade. He is not a nationalist and doesnt play to thr gallery. Most importantly he is – unlike the Prime Minister – willing to articulate the unpalatable truth. He has a future; most others not.

“He has a future; most others not.”

It is too early for a celebration.
We have seen how liberals ended their political careers in this island. Either they were voted out or they themselves turned into typical Sinhala/Buddhist cheerleaders.

          NV,

I back the concept of probabilities. It is highly probable Mangala would continue in the same vein and even give us new leadership with men like Eran and Harsha. If so, sooner the better. That is why Mangala appeals to me.

He might of course disappoint me, but the chances are, he wont and I back the present rather than an unknown future. Mangala Samaraweera brings to our sickening politics a most welcome frankness which others dont either know or are too afraid to touch upon.

Mangala certainly wont die wondering. I dont know the man personally but this is how I see from afar.

            Justice & Fairplay

            I do agree with you.
At the moment he is the only secular liberal.
Hope he succeeds in his mission.

I do not trust Harsha, he has this typical Sri Lankan idea of being a politician, whatever he does he feels the need to justify it to the voters by reiterating the fact that he is a proud Southerner and a Sinhala/Buddhists.

There are hundreds of thousands of liberals we know in this island who have lost faith in the political process, gutless bigoted leadership, corrupt system, … would not come forward to fight a good fight, for they know they will be fighting losing battle on their own and alone, …

By the way Asgiriya has endorsed Chamal Rajapaksa as the presidential candidate. Only a few months ago he wanted Gota Hitler to contest the forthcoming presidential elections.

It is said that Singapore was from the first day founded on sound principles, Meritocracy, Pragmatism and Honesty.

Pandering to masses and monks has to stop if we are going on correct path. You may loose votes but don’t worry truth will eventually triumph. No point preaching if your are rotten inside

The Sinhala Buddhist Modayas forgot history!!

The chief incumbent of the Kelaniya Raja Maha Vihara, Mapitigama Buddharakkitha was the chief conspirator in the assassination of Prime Minister S.W.R.D. Bandaranayake. He was convicted and sent to rigorous imprisonment and finally died in prison.

That should have been enough for any sensible person in 1959 (year of the assassination) to round up all Buddhist priests and confine them to their temples and put in place regulations preventing them from participating in political, divisive activities.

But the Sinhala Buddhist modayas embraced them and failed to see the evil in them.

If you sleep with dogs – you wake up with fleas!

    When will they ever learn??

    God help Sri Lanka

[we used MBRL against an enemy which was bombing public places, buses, offices to kill as many people with bombs laden with ball bearings. those people deserved such a fate.]

Leslia, have you forgotten killing innocent tamil civilians by Sinhala civilians, goons, clergy and military from 1956? This is why VP came in. Some of you buggers have a very short memory and inability to think. If not for that traitor Karuna alias kohilawardena and VPs stubbornness story would have been different. You did that to tamils and now to Muslims and you have disgraced the country and Buddhism and Buddha.

Since Mayantha Dissanayake was the only politician physically present when this rabble rousing half educated so called Buddhist monk made this idiotic remark, he should condemn it immediately.Otherwise Mayantha would ruin the legacy of his father Gamini Dissanayake.Or is it too much to expect from the son of a man who is accused of burning down one of this country’s cultural and educational heritages, the iconic Jaffna Library?Mayantha’s response would reveal if he is the cut above the rest as he openly claims or whether he is an ordinary scum bag politician of the Weerawansa mode .

Meanwhile ,hats off to Mangala Samaraweera for having the guts to vehemently condemn the hate speech of the deranged mad hatter of a monk(ey).Mangala saying this ,while continuously representing a Sinhala Buddhist electorate and District is proof that we Sinhalese, at least a overwhelming majority of us are not racist.Otherwise how can he be repeatedly reelected with thumping majorities to Parliament .Bravo Mangala Samaraweera !

It is not as serious as our Asgiri Prelate asking his Dayakayas to Stone Muslims..

May be there are Stone Masons who are Dayakayas there,
But I have never seen Stone Throwing type going there even to hold a Bodhi Pooja .
let alone offer those Gold Plated Atapairikara ,just like the one which I saw Mr Fawsy offering the Mahanayakas on behalf of Bathdeen, Assath Sally, Mujibur Rahuman, Hezbulla, Kabir Hashim and even SLMC Hakeem.

Wonder whether Kiriella and Dr Rajith were there with the Muslim delegation?…

Did you check the trays properly for other things?
All these so called monks came from very poor families, and are still very very poor. Therefore these monks do have financial responsibilities towards their family members.

The visitors are known to be very wealthy compared to the monks. But then you should have warned the saffronistas of strangers bearing gifts.

I have read this article and I have listened to the Mahanayake’s speech as well.

I think CT has habitually now publishing articles to bash Buddhisam and Sinhales Buddhists as well.

I totaly condem this article and its content. I have a great respect for the Mahanayake Thero. I also came to understand that there some Mosques, Built on the Dalada Maligawa Temple lands. But these Buddhists monks are expressing their dissatisfaction about the government and politicians as they are not taking any actions on the recent events. Further, I do not think there is something wrong on his speech. If this particular minority can not tolerate the majority community and their relegion, it is our right of the majority to cripple them through economic means. We , 90% of the population are the customers of this 10% minority. We have a every right to decide, not to paronise their business establishments. I think that is already happening.

This is not only the strategy adopted by the majority community of Sri Lanka, I noted there are some western developed countries, saying “”if you do not like our way of life, go back to the places that you have come from””.

      Sunil Dahanayake,

I share your opinion. I do not see the monks condoning violence. It is up to the individual to interpret a monk’s words. If some interpret the words as a call to violence, the fault does not lie with the monk. The monks are simply saying a group of people came to the island and built a 2500 year civilization. They are warning people that said civilization may be under attack from various elements. Regarding the economic boycott of Muslim establishments, this is also not something new. The West does the same thing to various countries, e.g. North Korea and Iran. Does that mean the West is fascist now?

      • 8
        5

        Lester,
“The monks are simply saying a group of people came to the island and built a 2500 year civilization. “
Which civilization are you talking about?
Is it the one where most kings came to power after killing their fathers/ brothers/ uncles ? The civilization that produced a lot of still active hot air but not a single philosopher, mathematician, astronomer or healer of international standing? Or is it the one that still sends it’s women as slaves to Muslim countries?
Be grateful for what the Muslim countries give you.

        • 2
          1

          Raman,

I am talking about the civilization that elected the world’s first female Prime Minister while the United States still had separate water fountains for dark-colored and light-colored people. There are plenty of engineering marvels; again, indigenous, in the North Engineering requires mathematical aptitude. The philosophy called “Theravada Buddhism” which developed in S. Lanka is unique to S. Lanka, Burma, Thailand, Cambodia, and Laos. Meanwhile, what did Jaffna Tamils accomplish? Supporting a globally banned terrorist organization for 30 years via drug smuggling, child conscription, and suicide bombing. All because of a superiority complex that emerged after the British gave Tamils special access to English-language schools.

“I am talking about the civilization that elected the world’s first female Prime Minister “
I wouldn’t expect you to be honest enough to mention that this very same PM came to power simply because her husband was murdered by a Theravada Buddhist monk . So great is this hypocritical “civilization”.

The Asgiriya High Priest says that the Muslims don’t love them. Love is a two way matter. His group of Buddhists have shown their love towards the innocent Muslims abundantly and repeatedly from Aluthgama to Minuwangoda and more! Of course not to forget his love, which is reverberating all over the world now.

If this is the quality of the leader of Sinhala Buddhism, then, it is in a sorry state. The man should be arrested for incitement of murder as he instigates the stoning the Doctor against whom no charges have been proved. If the laws are impartial, then, this should be the result. He has violated the fundamental rights of the Doctor by essentially inciting murder and has hit at the livelihood of Muslims who run eateries by suggesting that they put stuff which cause impotency among the Sinhalese. Maybe, he should get his monks to eat at Muslim eateries so that he could ensure that they remain celibate. At least Mangala is sensible to say what needs to be said.

If you have yet observed that Buddhist monks and politicians are the root causes of racial issues in Sri Lanka, we have not learned our lesson. They use every crime to demonize an entire racial group.

If ever you want to learn peaceful Buddhism, learn from Dalai Lama or European Buddhists or on-line. They teach you tolerant form of Buddhism.

But, if you want to learn racial or violent form of Buddhism, follow Sri Lanka or Myanmar form of Buddhism.

Sri Lanka monks have destroyed Buddhism by getting involved in politics.

There is some confusion here. The priest mentioned stoning because stoning is accepted punishment under Sharia Law. In countries like Saudi Arabia and Afghanistan, stoning is part of the legal code. What the priest is saying is to give Muslims their own form of justice, e.g. apply their own laws. Who can disagree with? As the saying goes, “when in Rome, do as Romans do.”

    • 5
      4

Lester you seems truly a dumb chap. Here in Lanka Ghandassara Chanassara and Rilavaa Ratne don’t want any Sharia laws or principles put into practice and you are applying the dictum of “when in Rome do as the Romans do”.Man unless you are no quite right upstairs, you are in Silly Lanka ,not in Saudi Arabia.Your English is atleast very shaky!

      • 4
        3

        Ranjith Randeniya,

The monks speak in riddles, just like Buddha. You are right, the monks don’t want Sharia. But they will not say it directly; that is why many like Mangala are confused. Here the monk is not saying to start stoning people, he is saying if Sri Lanka was under Sharia, the doctor would be stoned. That is why Muslims are not condemning the monk, how can they disagree with their own rule?

I read in a newspaper that when Vickneswaran was chief minister he went to see Malwatta and Asgiriya prelates to pay respects. Malwatta prelate treated Vickneswaran with respect by asking him to sit on a chair as he does it to other visitors, whereas Asgiriya prelate insulted him by asking him to sit down on the floor. The difference shows Asgiriya’s racist mentality.

Both Malwatta and Assgiria are racists. However Mlawattu is bit sophisticated racist than the other hence he was trying to be polite and courteous.

if i was asked to sit down on the floor, while he sits on a chair.i would have walked off.Shameless bugger wignesvaran letting down the tamil people by licking the arse of a monk who lives on handouts. He had no business to go and meet him anyway. The muslim ministers who resigned also went and licked his arse on june 11th and a week later he poked it up theirs. When will these buggers ever learn that the more you try to appease and lick the arse of your enemy the more he will play your arse.Once you have identified who are your enemies and who are your friends battle lines should be drawn clearly. No appeasement of extremists and racists whether they are sinhalese, tamil,or muslim.Deal with them through the only language that they can understand which is power. The then primeminister of england ,i forget that numbskulls name tried to appease hitler before he started world war 2,bending over backwards, going to berlin and licking his arse.

CT has done a good job with translation, readers, unfortunately, have taken it out of context. ““I overheard some Upaasaka Ammas here speaking of how these doctors must be stoned to death. . . I will not say it should happen, but that is what should happen…If one of our people committed such crimes against them [Muslims], we would have been sliced to death…”

The monk says “I will not say it should happen.” He is saying that, as a matter of principle, he doesn’t agree with this kind of punishment. In the next line, he says if a Sinhalese doctor had rendered a Muslim woman infertile, then under Muslim law, the doctor would have had his head chopped. Since beheading is acceptable punishment under the Sharia. When the monk says “that is what should happen” he is saying it is karma if a Muslim is punished in a way (stoning) that Muslims themselves perceive as legitimate. Now what is not surprising, Muslims have not spoken out against the monk, as they can clearly read between the lines, but our resident Eelamists are in a fury.

    • 4

      Lester
This seems to imply that Mangala has not understood exactly what the monk intended to communicate. Or maybe he hasnt listened carefully.
And if one is accusing a religious leader of hate speech one has to be pretty sure of the facts. It is bewildering to read such different interpretations of what was said.
Unfortunately, I cannot hear for myself.

      • 3
        1

        Manel,

It is silly to speak of religious fundamentalism if there are no forced conversions. The only groups actively involved in proselytizing on the island are Christians and Muslims. This is not surprising, as certain dogmas within these religions encourage the believers to convert non-believers. On the other hand, there exist Sinhala nationalists, even with the Sangha. But their agenda is ethnocentric, not religious.

        • 0
          4

          Lester,
Buddhists are more guilty of proselytising, with state support, than anyone else
Most Government schools are effectively Buddhist schools. Even non-Buddhist children are forced to chant gathas daily, and study Buddhism for OL , because ( surprise surprise!) there are no teachers for other religions.

Ridiculous article blown out of all proportion. The monk’s comments taken out of context and amplified by the Tamil racists. I note hardly any Muslims complaining about their own stoning laws found in the Koran (and the Bible). Mangala positioning himself for the top job posing as Robert Westernthinking. Quite sickening.

“I note hardly any Muslims complaining about their own stoning laws found in the Koran (and the Bible).”

Why should they complain as most of them live here and being stoned, robbed, destroyed … burned, …. by saffron clad thugs lead home grown mob.

“Mangala positioning himself for the top job posing as Robert Western thinking. Quite sickening.”

You are quite right it is not just sickening today, its been the case since mid 1950s.

“The monk’s comments taken out of context and amplified by the Tamil racists.”

“The Asgiriya High Priest in his sermon on the subject of stoning people, is meticulously correct in framing his recommendation. He does not say stone them. He refers to an imaginary Upsakamma who he claims has suggested stoning and says that we buddhists should do precisely that.

Why should we be surprised? We are the people who won a humanitarian war. We used RPGs and Multi Barrel Rocket launchers to spread compassion and tolerance . We have an infinite capacity for self delusion.”

Lester, almost every post in every article on CT attacks the Sinhala Buddhists and the Sangha. They do not differentiate between individual monks or individual Sinhala Buddhists, it is always the whole group. Also, although CT is run by a Sinhalese abroad, it’s articles often give unnecessary publicity to the Eelam lobby. I can’t help wondering whether it is dominated by Tamil journalists. What do you think?
