Battle For The Parliament

By Ameer Ali

Dr. Ameer Ali

The victory of Anura Kumara Dissanayake at the Presidential Election was an epoch-making event. International reception to AKD’s victory from IMF, WB and Mooney are encouraging. The local stock market, tourism sector and exporters have reacted positively. Japan has promised to restart the eleven stalled projects. And the president’s “stability first and reforms later” shows how pragmatic this individual is, which demolishes all scaremongering and scurrilous campaign against him and his NPP by their opponents. Likewise, some initial reforms announced by the new Prime Minister are original, constructive and reformative. In short, there seems to be an aura of optimism prevailing at present. Yet, AKD’s victory and his team’s opening salvos mark only the first phase of aragalaya’s struggle for system change. An equally important second phase has begun already with the dissolution of parliament and call for a General Election in November. Without a comfortable victory in this battle AKD’s schedule for reforms and system change would die of stillbirth. Already, renegades and rogues from and remnants of the defeated parties are regrouping and realigning to checkmate the new president. Aragalaya cannot afford to rest until the ultimate end is realized.

It is in this context that a serious campaign needs be undertaken by foot soldiers of aragalaya to win the support of minorities. The two or rather three minority communities if one were to separate the upcountry Tamils from the indigenous variety, hold the key to this ultimate end. From the voting behaviour demonstrated at the last Presidential Election, it was evident that the three minorities had not kept abreast of the thirst for change that was awakening the Sinhalese community.  Unfortunately, the aragalaya effect did not penetrate sufficiently deeply into these communities. While ethnonationalism continued to rule the Tamil mindset, provincialism and religious fervour dictated the thinking and behaviour of Muslims, particularly in the Eastern Province. This provincial and religious mindset had been kept alive deliberately by local Muslim leaders ever since 1947.  Just as the Tamils viewed themselves Tamils first and Sri Lankans second, Muslims were also taught to consider themselves Muslims first and Sri Lankans second. They were made to think as Muskims in and not of Sri Lanka. True, the Sinhalese community was no exception to this ethnic chauvinism. The cycle of violence unleashed against the Tamils since 1957, and the 25-year civil war that ended in 2009 are evidence enough to establish this fact.

However, after seven decades a new generation of young men and women from that community began to realize the true scale of damage caused by ethnonationalism to peace, prosperity and freedom in this country. The 2022 aragalaya was the result of this realization. These protestors demanded an end to the status quo and bluntly called for system change. That call marked the beginning of an awakening within the Sinhalese community, which eventually led to AKD’s victory as President. Regrettably, that awakening had only a peripheral impact on the three minorities as demonstrated by their voting preferences in the north, east and central districts. This imbalance should be rectified by November for NPP to capture a comfortable majority in the legislature.

It is a strange irony that while the majority community is willing to give up the culture of ethnonational politics and governance and opting to support a new political order with corruption free governance, leaders among the minorities are still showing preference to maintain the status quo so that they could protect their own leadership while engaging in political bargaining with corrupt leaders. The history of Sri Lanka Muslim Congress for example, with its support base in the Eastern Province, best illustrates how successfully the provincial mindset and religious fanaticism were nurtured and utilized by that party leadership to keep those Muslims untouched by the progressive trends sweeping through the country.  For instance, in one of the recent rallies organized in Batticaloa District to support Ranil Wickremesinghe, one Muslim politician shamelessly unleashed the canard that under the new system proposed by AKD Muslims would be allowed to celebrate only one of their two religious festivals and that there would also be restrictions on the number of daily worships they perform. With such diabolical propaganda it was not a surprise that AKD polled poorly in that district.

Aragalaya foot soldiers should break into these secluded Muslim and Tamil fortresses and convince those voters of the reality about the new wave. The message that there is no salvation to any community under an ethnonational and corrupt political structure must be understood by every voter. Already, efforts are being initiated by Muslim groups to look for suitable candidates to contest the coming election, who would not only demonstrate their commitment to the new era of changes but also the ability to understand the essence of aragalaya awakening and work to convince Muslims to become participants of it rather than remain as onlookers. This is encouraging and one would hope the same happening within the other minorities also. Captains of the old order would try every trick in the book to prevent NPP from achieving a working majority in the parliament. SLMC and ACMC leaders for example are veterans in making deals even with the devil to protect and promote their own fortunes at the expense of Muslim community. Hopefully, the coming General Election would wipe out these opportunists.

AKD’s cleaning up campaign, plan to restructure the economy to promote growth with equity and his resolve to go beyond the 13th Amendment to realize ethnic reconciliation need solid support from members of the parliament. The battle for the parliament must be won by NPP decisively. Without that victory aragalaya’s mission would remain incomplete.

    Battle For The Parliament

Before any investigation, people are already reporting the theft that occurred. If the previous government had stopped corruption, the country’s economic situation would have been stable. Japan has pledged to restart the stalled projects. Someone requested a commission for these projects, and Japan reported it. In response, Ranil created a loophole to justify the situation, allowing the individual to remain in parliament. Globally, people are aware of the commissioners’ actions, and it is expected to be broadcast soon.

“Native, Is this guy speaking the truth? ……. No dodging the question please …… Yes or No?”

Yes true however these accusations have to be proved in the courts, charge them under relevant laws. In the meantime why would Kumar Gunaratne (FSP) disagree with Anura and his party saying while that should be done, the new President and the National People’s Power (NPP) should also focus on issues such as the economic crisis, the International Monetary Fund (IMF), and geopolitics.
Whom should Anura support or trust, his own party or Kumar Gunaratne (FSP)?

        Did you read todays Island?
Here is something interesting from Kamala:
Retired Gen. Kamal vows never to flee the country he has given best years of his life to defend, ‘Ready to face any investigation’
“Gunaratne said that he wouldn’t run away like a coward, whatever various interested parties say”.

Kamala has forgotten the Mankulam debacle, ran for his life (for 48 Hours) abandoning the camp when nimal fernando’s (your) mate VP sent his Bata wearing boys/Girls and children to attack the Army camp.

Why would he say ” Ready to face any investigation”?
Has he got any plans to join Gota in Nepal, Range Bandara in Thailand, ….. Basil in the USA, ….?
Is he staying behind to plan/mount a palace coup?

      RBH59 ,

” Ranil created ………….to remain in parliament . ” Ranil was part
and parcel of the Crooks , so he can not act against one selected
crook . Fish starts to rot from its head . More than 90% of those
in the parliament were thieves . So , anyone desiring to become its
leader knows he’s going in to give leadership to a bunch crooks .
In contrast , we are now witnessing a bunch of truly Dedicated ,
Trained and Disciplined lot who got what it takes to punish and
stop crooks from entering public service . The Old order will have
to correct their ways if they want to stand up to this new challenge .
Are they ready for this ? Tough time ahead . EC has made relief
measures harder due to the General Election . People will have to
wait and NPP has more time to Deliver on its Promises .

The following from this article is only partly true:

It is a strange irony that while the majority community is willing to give up the culture of ethnonational politics and governance and opting to support a new political order with corruption free governance, leaders among the minorities are still showing preference to maintain the status quo so that they could protect their own leadership while engaging in political bargaining with corrupt leaders.

I am aware that a faction of the ITAK wants to sit with the government while the other wants to be in opposition. Similarly the former faction was keen to endorse AKD at the presidential election but was unable to get full party support.
I know ITAK leaders who voted for AKD.
People like Pastor Dayalan Sanders of Batticaloa have openly called on the Tamil people to be open to AKD and give him the time to work things out.
So do not write us off. I feel confident that the Tamil people will join the mainstream move by NPP in rooting for reform. Reform and being rid of corruption are in the Tamil interest. How can we turn our backs on this great moment in history?

All Tamil nationalist politics relies on distrust of the Sinhalese as a people.
However, many politicians had defected to the government after election on a nationalist ticket, like Rajadurai and Canagaratnam (Batticalia District) in 1977, and then we have Devananda, Pillayan, Karuna and several more have happily collaborated with UNP, SLFP & SLPP led governments.
The FP and later TULF & TNA, havind antagonized all profressive Sinhalese forces further painted themselves into a corner with the Tamil Eelam call.
What we have are bunches of opportunists who are not interested in the problems of the Tamil people. The FP is the most chaotic of the lot.
Fact remains that Anura fetched far far less votes than SP & RW. None of the FP dared to openly declare support for Anura.
May I know which FP leaders voted for Anura? Would they dare declare it in public?
      Absolute humbugs.

        SJ,
Your political contribution for Buddhist Sinhala Fundamentalism and racism contributed more destruction to the national politics of the SLFP and UNP. Pathetically you have claimed that Buddhist Fundamentalist national politics to buy the even murderers corruptors as your example of successful national politicians. You are part and partial of growth of racism and Buddhist fundamentalism which killed thousands of Sinhala and Tamil Civilians. You were with Srimavo to kill thousands of Sinhalese youths in 1970 and brought special status to the constitution which is the cause corruption in the national politics.

As for the rest of the blabbering, I will leave you sort out the mess that is churning your mind.

“Battle For The Parliament” – YES. It is a priority for the President.

There is one more “Priority” that the defeated President Ranil W has directed the attention of the present President. Ranil W has written a letter dated 2024/09/27 to the President AKD and requested that he (Ranil W) be provided with (1) To set up a Security Unit with 163 security personnel (2) 25 Arms and 525 ammunition (3) 30 Umbrellas (4) 16 Vehicles (5) 25 Walki Talkies (6) 02 Gas Masks (7) 10 Dragon Lights (8) 01 Computer (9) 01 Printer (10) 16 COOKS (11) 08 DOCTORS.

This ex-president who carried a “Baby” through the “Vel Palama” (Suspension Bridge) has now “PRIORITIZED” the above provisions to him, which could be as a “Thank You” for a “Job” done. Mr. President – AKD have you put this letter in the basket of “TO BE DONE IMMEDIATELY”? The people are waiting to hear from you.

… “stability first and reforms later”
The above stand sounds simple. Not at all.
    What is Stability?
    Which are Reforms?
These are huge questions. The answers are not easy or simple.
I don’t want to provide the answers myself. I prefer to wait and watch for the answers from Anura himself.
Let us be patient and pragmatic.

The lines in Tamil read as “without sword, without blood” not “without sword or blood”.
The word “sword” as in the source is more poetic than “weapons”.

Every elected leftist government in Latin America Since Chile in 1970 was overthrown violently. Some coups failed and some were reversed by mass mobilization. Even recently the US tried its hand there.

“Just as the Tamils viewed themselves Tamils first and Sri Lankans second,”
I think Dr. Ameer Ali completely forgot about the Sri Lanka that racism and Buddhist Fundamentalism dominated in the Sri Lankan politics including by JVP/NPP and other two major Sinhalese Political Parties UNP/SJB and SLFP/SLPP until the country suffered economically and Sinhalese are in the streets of Southern Sri Lanka. It is the Tamil Leadership who offered to live in unity with Sinhalese even when the Sinhalese leadership preferred for a federal set up. It is the Tamil political Leaders made an agreement with Sinhalese leadership in a semi-federal set up in 1956 which was denied by Sinhalese leaders and killed hundreds of innocent Tamils in 1958.

Don’t put the blame on Tamils ignoring the past 75 years political violence against Tamils. The change in the south started only from 22nd September 2024. You expect Tamils to change before you do anything and Tamils still live under open jail with Sinhalese Police and Military forces.

      Ajith,
“The change in the south started only from 22nd September 2024.”
Seems a typographical error in respect of when the change in attitude took place – that should read as 22/03/2022 – Date of Declaration of Country’s Bankruptcy and progress downwards on the SLIPPERY SLOPE to the gates of IMF, with begging bowl!!??

The bankruptcy of SB chauvinism was slow to dawn on the people. There is no exaxt date of the event.
Even Gota’s win in 2019 was not driven by SB politics, but mainly by anger with the failure of the Yahapalanaya regime. The Rajapaksas read SB meanings into it.

        Mahila,
It is not a typographical error. For me, the change that happened in 22/3.2022 did not make any change and that was robbed by the political coup. The real change initiated only after People confirmed it on 22/9/2024.

      Ramona,
Trust me, Anura won’t be the last Executive President.

      • 2
        1

NPP will get around 151 seats.

According to presidential election percentages, AKD’s 42.3 will translate to around 95 seats (225 x0.423 approx. 95.175).

Due to voter confidence in the presidential results, the other two candidates presidential votes will be split into half each.

        Ranil’s vote count will gain 19 seats for NPP ( 17.27/2=8.635; 225*8.635=18.7875 approx 19).

        Sajith’s votes will create 37 seats for NPP ( 32.76/2=16.38; 225×0.1638=36.885…approx. 37)

Together there will be around 151 seats or more for NPP.

Although the 29 National List seats are based on the proportional numbers according to the overall votes, the numbers will probably approximate to around 151 for NPP.

For true democracy, Executive Privileges should be formulated around electoral seat numbers. For example, a 200 seating for NPP and the EP can be abolished till the next elections. A number of 151, and EP can be reduced by 10%. The number of 95 seats and the President will hold full Executive Powers.

          Ranil’s vote count will gain 19 seats for NPP ( 17.27/2=8.635; 225*0.08635*=18.7875 approx 19).

            Ramona,
Remember that when you write stuff like this, it stays on CT and can come back to haunt you in a month or two. There were people in August who predicted 70% for AKD.

          Ramona,
          .
I don’t quite get you here. The ITAK will contest in the Northern and Eastern Provinces this time. Their votes will undoubtedly suffer owing to the support that they extended to Sajith.
          .
Even if the SJB and the UNP unite and contest in those two provinces, they will make no headway there. Yes, the contest will be interesting in those two Provinces.
          .
In the hill country, on the other hand, the UNP/SJB is likely to field Thondaman, and they will do well.
          .
The NPP will gain Sinhala votes. I hope that they field a few Tamil and Muslim nominees. I wonder what I will do myself. I will definitely vote NPP, but within that? It’ll be strange for me to vote for Tamil and Muslim candidates, with me not knowing Tamil. Let me wait for the nominations to be known.

Ranil has sought heightened security measures, despite not having been democratically elected by the people. The current president does not possess similar protections. Ranil appears acutely aware of the numerous indiscretions he has committed and seems intent on vindicating himself.”

They intend to set things straight and show they were not at fault.” The compensation was minister the property was a quick act to get the vote from them and not for agriculture sector.

“ The two or rather three minority communities if one were to separate the upcountry Tamils from the indigenous variety, ”
Sinhala Buddhist Fundamentalists (SBF) have been successful in SUPPRESSING SL Tamils aspirations by using the same tactics/principle of DIVIDE & RULE.
Wasn’t it RW claiming that he managed to divide the LTTE into “KARUNA” faction and “Pirabhakaran” faction? Is Dr A A trying to divide the Tamil Speaking Citizens of SL into 3-4 groups? He should be advocating for the Muslims to be a Tamil FIRST and be a Muslims second. It is sad the Leaders of the minorities are so divided and competitive. These politicians should be guided by Sumanthiran and C Rasamanickam to WORK along with THE PROGRESSIVES (NPP) .

      Ajith,
“The change in the south started only from 22nd September 2024.”
Seems a typographical error in respect of when the change in attitude took place – that should read as 22/03/2022 – Date of Declaration of Country’s Bankruptcy and progress downwards on the SLIPPERY SLOPE to the gates of IMF, with begging bowl!!??

“Is Dr A A trying to divide the Tamil Speaking Citizens of SL into 3-4 groups? “
      Does he need to?
When have they had a common representative in a single electorate– let alone common leadership.
It was Jaffna Tamil domination in the ACTC and even the FP, despite Sampanthan being made leader. Tamil nationalism could not unite not just the three Tamil speaking nationalities but even the N&E Tamils.

Jaffna man got it wrong. No faction in the ITAK wants to sit with the government. As is the practice, the ITAK too an informed decision to support the SJB after studying the manifestos of JVP/NPP and Ranil Wickremesinghe. SJB leader Sajith Premadasa publicly promises that his party will fully implement 13A, that means land and police powers. These promises were included in the BJP election manifesto as well.

On the other hand, BJP/NPP was evasive on the implementation of 13A. There was no direct reference to 13A. His solution to the national question is to take forward the draft constitution that was agreed in principle by all the political parties during good governance. Anura Kumara Dissanayake seems to think the ethnic problem can be solved if everyone is treated equally. He said he would give jobs to young Tamils. No discrimination based on race, language or religion. He also said members of the armed forces will not face any investigation for alleged crimes committed during the war. Vijitha Herath, now Minister, publicly said that no land and police powers will be devolved to Provincial Councils.

Ranil Wickremesinghe also promised full implementation of 13A sans police powers. But he did nothing when in power.

Hence the decision by the ITAK’s to support SJB at the presidential polls. He polled the highest number of votes in the 5 electoral districts in the Northeast. He secured 676, 681 (30.48%) votes.

Has that party taken an intelligent decision ever since its success in 1956?

    (Part I)
    AA,
“The TWO or rather ‘THREE’ (NONE SUCH MINORITY GROUPS EXISTS?? – MAJORITY COMMUNITY, BEING ‘SINGHALA SPEAKING’, “SINGHALESE ETHNICITY”, AND THE MINORITIES ARE ‘TAMIL SPEAKING’ TAMIL ETHNICITY CONSISTING OF TAMIL HINDUS, CHRSTIANS, OF INDIGENOUS VARITY TO BORROW YOURS, AND TAMILS OF RECENT ORIGIN (HILL-COUNTRY – VARIOUS RELIGIOUS DENOMINATIONS OF CHOICE – THEN THOSE OF THE “ISLAMIC FAITH”, WHO TOOK REFUGE IN KANDYAN KINGDOM (EASTERN PROVINCE) DUE TO PORTUGUESE CATHOLIC PERSECUSION in their original, “SOUTH INDIAN” domicile – “MUSLIMS” OF SRI LANKA AND SEPARATELY “MALAYS”, WHO WERE THE MALACCAN/INDONESIAN ORIGIN PROTECTORS OF THE KANDYAN KINGDOM, SERVINING THE THEN KING BEING THE ONLY OTHER MINORITY COMMUNITIES’ OF SRI LANKA!!?? NONE OTHER!! IF, “ONE EVER ATTEMPTS TO SEPARATE THE UPCOUNTRY TAMILS FROM THE INDIGENOUS VARIETY” IS AN INSIDIOUS ACT OF CUNNINGNESS, AND NOTHING ELSE, TO SAY THE LEAST!!??
If it’s NOT ‘RABBLE-ROUSING’, definitely tantamount to, INCITING the countries’ people confused, whipping-up emotions, anger – ‘boiling point’, with no reason whatsoever!!??
The 2 ethnic groups “Majority Sinhalese and Minority Tamils”, and we’ll sort out differences that way, than confusing, Ethnicity (Language) and Religion!? I have lot of interaction in the past with people of KALMUNAI-KUDI, WHO CHERISH their Language of Birth and childhood, used to enjoy,

    (Part II)
Talking their “Tamil language, Poetry acumen”, which they’re PROUD OF, FEEL PRIVILEGED!! Those people are so knowledgeable in “language of their childhood”, they have educated me on their culture!!?? They are the ones who chided me for not being well versed myself in that sphere!!?? I still remember 1 conversation with them, where for 1st time I was informed of “Subramaniya Bharathi”, the famous Tamil, South Indian Poets Script/Verse, ”PETTA THAYUM, PIRANDHA PON NADUM, NATTA VANILUM NANI SIRANDHAHDU WE”
If for any reason you wouldn’t feel comfortable to be assigned as a Tamil, you are welcome to be a Sinhalese!!?? None would oppose that proposition!!?? The truth of the matter would be evidently clear if you consider, Late Mohamed Hussain Mohamed Ashroff’ – Leader of and Founder of SLMC – He was also an accomplished poet, reciting poetry or quoting from literature at the drop of a hat. But more importantly he was a deeply humane man was NEVER SHY OR EMBARRASSED TO HIS COMPETENCY OF HIS MOTHER TONGUE TAMIL!!??
This is the same OLD game again!!??
AA, Sheer ‘NAKEDNESS’ is showing through!!? I’m asking that be stopped!? Clothes you’re wearing aren’t covering NAKEDNESS!? “NO”!? ATTEMPT IS FUTILE!!??
