In a letter signed and dated 23 Dec. 2014 by Jaffna VC Vasanthi Arasaratnam to all Deans and Head Siddha Medicine she has written;
“I have received the annexed list from University Grants Commissions [sic.]. Please circulate this among the staff of your Faculty/Section and get their signatures. On the request of the Chairperson UGC [who is Prof. Kshanika Hrimimburegama] we have to forwarding [sic.] this to University Grants Commission again [sic.] on or before 29.12.2014.”
We may note that academic staff members have to sign – “get their signatures” orders Prof, Hrimburegama.
The document to be circulated reads as follows in Tamil:
“To get more knowledge without obstacles, and to march towards development without hindrance, our best wishes for the victory of His Excellency Mahinda Rajapaksa”
That is is followed by a table for signatures.
“This is a clear violation of our Election Laws. Just one more! We may also note from the quality of the VC’s writing the use by this government of useless persons who will obey for lack of alternative career paths. We may also assume that Prof. Hrimburegama has sent out similar letters to other universities – or is it only Tamils who are to be bullied like this?” a university teacher told Colombo Telegraph.
“This itself is a good reason not to vote for Mahintha Rajapaksa.” he further said.

Assuming it actually originates from the UGC, she simply forwards it down the chain — note the Dean of Arts also does the same. Passes it down to Heads and staff.
This IS the problem of excessive centralization in Sri Lanka. People don’t make decisions. They don’t challenge authority (when it is abused) or even ask simple and obvious questions. Just forward down the chain all instructions from above — to cover their backs and just to stay in the good books of those in power (to whom they owe their positions).

First of all I thank the staff member who had the courage to bring this shameful letter to the notice of the public.
VC Vasanthi Arasaratnam should have sent the letter from the UGC Chairman Kshanika Hrimimburegama back with the statement that he has no authority to make such a request to any VC. She should have also copied it to the other VCs, The U of J Council members and to the Minister of Higher Education (even if he had initiated it.) These two individuals do not qualify to occupy their position.
Shame on you Chairman. How can you from such a responsible position be a peon. Where and when did you leave behind your academic freedom and integrity? Did you also send a similar letter of request to other Vice Chancellors?
I hope none of the staff of U of J signs it. They can vote for anyone they choose but not obey such orders.
VC Arasaratnam should have the Academic integrity not to be a peon of the UGC Chairman or for that matter to anyone.
I hope the Commissioner of Election take such intimidation and bring legal action against them.

She must be a thick head, no doubt Srilankan Universities had rejected her admission to do Medicine, so her basic BSc [Bio Science] was collected from South India [Which university?]But her PhD was from Sweden which may account for her English Grammar. Jaffna VC Vasanthy Arasaratnam is a corrupted third class academic. She did not qualify to enter Sri Lankan University and went to India to complete a 3 year general degree in Science. She did research in Biotechnology and working as a Professor of Biochemistry in the medical faculty. She just read the lecture notes in the lecture hall. She was responsible to appoint another third class ordinary corrupted academic (Balakumar) as Senior lecturer in biochemistry and Dean/Medicine. Balakumar also did a three year general degree without class. He has completed the degree in the second attempt.

If MS wins yet they can get credit by saying that they were responsible to building enough material for an election petition against MR in the event of an MR victory.

Don’t get too emotional about Prof VA’s instructions. If Sirisena wins nothing will change. Somebody else in her place will issue similar instructions to Tamils from Sirisena Govt.in due cause.
This election is actually between known and unknown devils. Between those who looted the country and not allowed to do so. If by a miracle Sirisena wins, he will not abolish the executive presidency, will not attend to Tamil issue, will not bring civilian rule in Tamil areas. She became a professor of biochemistry with her biotechnology research papers at Jaffna Science Association. With the help of Prof Balasubramaniam (an eminent scholar), she has published very few papers in index Journals.
The basic problem was her 3 year ordinary degree in a Indian University and the subject matter. She is a professor of biochemistry to teach medical biochemistry to medical students. But, she did research in biotechnology. She was a clerk in a company before Prof Balasubramaniam invited her to do research with him. She could not qualify to enter Sri Lankan university. But, she is teaching biochemistry to highly intelligent medical students in the medical faculty. She is reading the “hand written or power point slides” lecture notes in the class room.

As for the VC’s letter, let’s face it friends. In a way some of us are kind of responsible for her conduct. For past 6 years or so we all overlooked this corruption and piracy as a gift for defeating the Tigers. Allowed MR inc. to grow their network in the society and act with impunity. We accepted the culture of corruption, violence and disappearances as an acceptable Sri Lankan virtue. His network is so entrenched and drunk with power and greed, they will do anything to keep that status-quo.
