An alleged assault on a Buddhist monk and his driver by a group of Muslims, in Aluthgama on the Galle–Colombo Road yesterday (12th June) evening, near the Aluthgama-Welipenna road near Dharga town, forced the Police to fire tear-gas on a group of people, who were protesting over the incident. Traffic jams were also reported in the area after the protesters blocked the road.
The incident took place on Poson Poya Day, sacred to Buddhists in Sri Lanka.
Ministers Kumara Welgama and Rohitha Abeyagunawardene visited the scene in an attempt to sort out matters. Welagama’s vehicle was reportedly stoned by the angry crowd and damaged.
According to a resident of Aluthgama who wishes to remain anonymous, “right now, on what was to be a peaceful Poson Poya day, my town Aluthgama is a war zone because of religious fanaticism. Mobs rule the streets, smashing Muslim shops, and Police just fired tear-gas to disperse the mob surrounding the Police station. There are rumours floating that Muslims are assaulting the Sinhalese in Dharga Town”. He adds that this is a blatant lie, “I spoke to a friend there and he said there was no such thing happening”.
He says that this is a repeat of events, “the last times it was kept out of the press and over a thousand military personnel were brought in. This is one area where Muslims and Buddhists live eyeball to eyeball.”
He goes on to say that there are ‘agent provocateurs’ who have been working to bring about this situation for the last few weeks. “I see shades of July 83’ in what is happening. Even normally peaceful people have taken to the streets. I’m right in the middle of the town and can see how the provocateurs are working”, he adds.
He further states, that there is an anti-Muslim rhetoric and the most ridiculous stories being floated around, “some of the temples are involved, I live right next to one”, he adds.
This morning (Friday 13th) the town of Aluthgama is reportedly in lock-down, with a very heavy Police presence; virtual saturation with the Riot Police, two water cannon vehicles and the STF.
A volatile situation is anticipated today, after Friday prayers at the Mosque.
May 10, 2014, a shopping complex belonging to a Muslim businessman in Dharga town Aluthgama was torched by a mob of around 200 people which includes Buddhist monks. According to reports the mob had torched the shopping complex of the brother of a suspect who had allegedly molested a boy at the complex. But the court released him on bail after watching the CCTV footage of the alleged incident.

Some of these monks are animals. They think they are the only ones who have emotions. All these are because of not having disipline. Earlier days buddhist monks were the ones who guided us the disipline and patience. Today the behave as if they become uncontrolleble mad dogs. If the rabid injections were administered to them at the early stages, these dogs could have been tamed accordingly.

I just cannot imagine why the people in power are not concerned about the gravity of where we are heading. The 83 riots started with the rumour mongers spreading bleak stories of things that even never happened. When the riots started in the South though responsibility was put upon the Sinhalese there were large groups of Muslims too involved in the vandalism. The riots were orchestrated by politically and racially motivated groups and then the gangs and looters joined in and finally some violent minded people from Sinhalese and Moslem communities joined the fray. It is time that peace loving political and non political groups join together with Buddhist and Muslim religious leaders nip this cancer in the bud.
The only good thing that came out from the Aluthgama affair is that the opportunistic political henchman enjoying power have been treated in the real manner that they have to be treated.

The response by the STF and Police indicates Law enforcement authority has gone in to overdrive to ensure this does not go out of control. We all know who mobilizes such personnel.
However this will not be the last, the seed of hatred is planted firmly in the minds of majority community. There was a incident in a leading private school where 12 years boy was assaulted and made paralyzed due to religion related assault.
This mentality can only be reversed by this GOV or the next successive government. The distrust and hatred is firmly spread across the island.

One must understand that a Muslim man can have four wives means he can have four wives at anyone time.
Koran allows them to divorce their wives at anytime by just saying ‘I divorce you’ three times. Then he can let her rot and remarry a younger one. That means a Muslim can legally have any number of wives in his life so long as it is four at a time. How many wives Muhammad had? Countless number. It is said sex maniac Muhammad married so many for one night.
Like in China we must tax those that produce more than two or three children.

It is never easy trying to discuss a point of issue when you tear into and turn abusive against the character of our revered Prophet of Islam, referring to him as a ‘maniac’, the leader of nearly 1.5 billion Muslims worldwide.
It is better for you to judge and decide for yourself what is the best solutions for a worldwide situation in reference. If women outnumber men in the world in the ratio of 2 to 1, where do all of the women find husbands if the rule is 1 woman per man? Islam is the only religion with the solution. What examples have the world’s religious leaders left behind for their followers? As for Christians, Jesus Christ did not marry at all. Lord Buddha married, had a son but then deserted them and went into the jungle looking for solutions to the world’s sorrows. He never ever returned to his family. The Holy Prophet of Islam married by example and showed us Muslims that marriage is a sacred duty and how it should be done, including who can be considered legitimate in partnership. He taught Muslims not to commit sin through adultery and extra-marital affairs, but he brought in legitimacy to make it legal. If you had any idea of history, you should know that it was the general practice in those previous times for leaders or very rich people to have many wives in harems and as concubines, but it was limited to just 4 by God through His commandments in the Holy Quran. Now you tell me how many Muslim men that you know who actually have more than one legitimate wife, or OK lets say two legitimate wives, or 3 or 4 legitimate wives? None so. But I can tell you there are many non-Muslims (married and officially un-married) in society who have illegitimate wives and even children who can be termed bastards. Where is the law to control them? So much so that now it seems to be like the ‘done thing’. Living together, affairs outside of marriage, one-night stands, blind dates are all the phenomenon of the times with no one to question it.

No Individual or a priest has the right to criticize a religion or attack another person. Acts of individuals in the name of religion also be shunned. Also its better not to be experts on others religious books. Such experts on religions will tell you when such a quotation was made why and under what circumstances. Its like reading a book on medications and a leyman prescribing medications.
In SL the politicians had used religion and language for their own benefit. If they are the true believers of these religions which they demonstrate in front of the public, Our country would be a different one that we see today. Divide & rule is a lesson our politicians learnt well from foreign powers who try to teach us human rights after robbing ours for centuries.Unfortunately SL is fast becoming like a failed Rotten Banana Republic due to this.
This is where we need free media and individuals like Social Activist Anna Hazare. These are the institutions which educate our people to change the corrupt system & make a better Lanka. The public first of all should stop squabbling and boycott media that side with divisional politics. Otherwise we will be ruled by thugs, pick pockets, drug barons and kasippu mudalalies. Hope the readers of CT can make that change rather than name calling and fighting in these columns.
