Cabinet of ministers have directed law enforcement authorities and the Attorney General to expedite action against instigators and perpetrators of violence and hate speech and hate crimes.
Issuing a statement today, the Cabinet said: We are deeply concerned by the recent incidents of violence targeting places of religious worships, shops and business enterprises and houses. We denounce in the strongest terms, these acts of violence and hatred, including incidents of hate speech by certain individuals and groups aimed at inciting violence against the different ethnic and religious communities in our country.

The New Hate Speech and Hate Crime Laws are not necessary at all. There is no widespread religious violence in Sri Lanka. Muslims tried to present a wrong impression about Sinhalese Buddhists to the world. There were a series of attacks, true, but even electrical fire incidents in Muslim shops were also added to hate crimes list. Many people came to conclusions based on assumptions. As the majority of the country is Sinhalese Buddhists these laws will reflect bad on entire Buddhist nation which is unfair and unreasonable. — The inefficiency and inaction of the Police should not be fallen on Buddhists and use it as a tool to bring in New Laws as if there is an uncontrollable situation in the country, which is false.—– The New Hate Crimes Law will actually divide religions more as the Buddhists will feel that it was brought only to punish them while the Government is actually covering up the involvement of Muslims.—– Moreover, this law will be used to suppress the voice of Sinhalese against Government’s many ceaseless acts against the will of the masses. For an example: There is every possibility that this Law will erroneously apply to any protests against ETCA, Sale of national assets and even Federal Constitution by the public and witch-hunt vociferous nationalist politicians. We Sinhalese Buddhist have a Democratic Right to make our voice heard. The attacks on Muslim shops, which are still mysterious to me, should not be used as a tool to suppress the voice of Sinhalese Buddhists. We all love a peaceful country. As long as the Government doesn’t use its tyrannical ways to go beyond the wishes of the majority citizenry, divide the country and sell our assets to foreigners, there will be peace. If there is tension, it is Government’s own doing.
