Carcinogenic Kumar: Thanks, But No Thanks

By Grusha Andrews

In the year 2018, when France has a Macron, Croatia has a Kolinda Grabar and even Pakistan, a country with an estimated literacy rate of just 58%, elected an Imran Khan backed by its army in a moment of dangerous hope, the editor of Colombo Telegraph, Uvindu Kurukulasuriya has shown poor taste in sharing a two year old post from 2017 proposing Kumar Sangakkara for the Presidency of Sri Lanka. This post suggests that Sangakkara is of presidential material based on the fact that he ‘renounced’ the captaincy of the Sri Lanka cricket team. I translate his 2017 Facebook post: “what is needed are leaders who can renounce power. What Sri Lanka lacks is just that. What would happen if someone like Kumar Sangakkara emerges for 2020?”

Dangerous Memes Inflate Dangerous Men

Little does the editor Colombo Telegraph realize the danger of being an originator of a dangerous meme. It is irresponsible for a senior journalist of his political and professional maturity to propagate the myth that Kumar Sangakkara, ex cricket captain of Sri Lanka merits presidential hopes for an array of reasons. This meme has resurfaced with the election of Imran Khan to the premiership of Pakistan after two decades of tireless political activism and investment. The conversation in the media suggests that the presidency of Sri Lanka should be offered on a golden platter to Sangakkara, cricketer and once national icon perhaps the only traits Sangakkara shares with Imran Khan.

Sangakkara is a human embodying the very concepts of sharp and cunning strategy. His fluent ‘accented’ English and pageantry brand of western sophistication that can be aspired to by the common man only in his dreams making him a ‘can-do –no –wrong” gentleman in the eyes of the gullible Sri Lankans. In a country tragically devoid of heroes, even a cricketer playing for millions of rupees as a salary is a savior prince; a messiah; a resurrected Jesus; an unearthed prophet. The pathetic extent of Sri Lankan tradition of persona worship and western sophistication worship is such.

Love, Sex, Accountability and Transparency

Sangakkara delivered the 2011 MCC Spirit of Cricket Cowdrey Lecture at Lords, popularly considered “the most important speech in cricket history”. During this hall mark speech he stated “accountability and transparency in administration and credibility of conduct were lost in a mad power struggle that would leave Sri Lankan cricket with no clear, consistent administration”.

How sweet? It appears that Sangakkara is a big fan of yahapalana jigsaw pieces such as accountability and transparency. In 2015, an event organizing business called Live Events ‘pretended’ to organize a musical concert titled Love and Sex where Enrique Iglesias was to perform. Live Events, a company formed in the aftermath of Sangakkara’s retirement by himself, Mahela Jayawardena and others executed this event in a fashion amounting to daylight robbery and blatant disregard to any business ethic where the show did not start for over 3 hours and there was gross mismanagement of crowds, ripping off those who paid high prices for tickets .The company owned by Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardena was reportedly involved in an estimated 30 million Sri Lankan rupees ($288,123) tax fraud in the form of evaded municipal tax due for this concert to the government. Sangakkara and Jayawardena who command great social and power clout due to their celebrity status wriggled out of this unprecedented entertainment cum business fraud with the following words: “although we know an apology or refund cannot fully satiate your disappointment, we wish to reiterate that we remain fully committed to all of you and our country,” Yeah. Some commitment to the people and the country. Transparency and accountability, anyone? Pity these Sri Lankan who think that such day light fraudsters will take us to a better place.

Consistent Spokesperson For Cancer Causing Food Industry

From cement, telephone connections, shirts, substandard cars, three wheelers to supermarkets, Sangakkara has been a rampant endorser of goods putting his mouth where money is.

Claiming to be a fan of accountability and transparency, Sangakkara has been a consistent endorser of cancer causing (carcinogenic) food and beverages over the decades. His most noted TV commercial “Brrr!” to endorse Coca Cola is the most notorious to date.

According to literature published in high impact scientific journals, a statistically significant increase in the incidence of cancer of the pancreas is associated with the consumption of coca cola. Cola consumption is also associated enamel decay and excessive consumption of regular soft‐drinks is highly discouraged for all ages, in particular for children and adolescents1.

Further, epidemiological studies have demonstrated the association between increased cancer mortality and high concentrations of trihalomethanes, a compound similar to surface cleaners found in Coca Cola2.

The 500ml ‘buddy’ bottle that Sangakkara, Mahela Jayawardena and others are holding in their hands in this commercial affecting the minds of viewers, especially the young, has 53 grams of sugar. You can imagine the collective national sugar consumption that such advertisement would have ensured. Currently the prevalence of diabetes mellitus in Sri Lanka ranges between 10.3% to 15% of the population depending on location. This prevalence is estimated to escalate causing premature death, heart disease, blindness, kidney failure and stroke attributed to diabetes. Mahela Jayawardena the self-proclaimed crusader walking tearfully for cancer should also take a good look at himself for his pretentious crusade while filling his pockets promoting cancer causing, diabetes promoting beverages. A well suited ‘bromance ‘between Sangakkara and Jayawardena, certainly. One must ask Sangakkara whether he feeds Coca Cola to his children before aspiring to make him the future president of our children.

Sangakkara’s second most salient carcinogenic food endorsement is the Prima Instant Chicken Noodles commercial.

Large prospective cohort studies have conclusively proven the association between consumption of instant noodles and bile duct cancer and gall bladder cancer3. In 2015 Indian superstars Amitabh Bachchan, Madhuri Dixit and Preity Zinta were sued by the FDA of India for “endorsing a harmful product (Maggie Noodles which is a product of global giant Nestle for its carcinogenic concentrations of lead and MSG) and misleading the public”. The global instant food industry is known to be responsible for the loss of significant disability adjusted life years where instant noodles constitute a large contributor of cancer and cardio metabolic disease including premature death by heart disease.

One must ask Sangakkara whether he feeds Prima Instant Chicken Noodles to his wife and children before aspiring to make him the future president of our children.

And think about it. He has done all this for money, while earning millions as a national team player, county cricket player and a 20-20 player. Does he sound like a certain group of people we know so well, who will not let go of any opportunity, ethical or unethical to earn a buck like a local Shylock? Yes. He sounds very much like our 225 friends down Diyawanna.

Mascot Of The Milk Food Mafia

In addition to his role as an endorser of the carcinogenic food industry, both Sangakkara and his wife have been the most known duo for the endorsement of unethically marketed milk products of Fonterra Milk Food Company. In the past Rosy Senanayake has also been an endorser of Anlene, a product that proclaims to prevent osteoporosis in a country full of foods with natural vitamin D and sunlight. The manufacturer of this product, priced at USD 5.80 and Sangakkara himself have been pressurized by public health professionals and consumer groups on misleading advertising which Sangakkara has completely evaded through legal loop holes and pure celebrity arrogance. In a country where a tablet of calcium supplement is available for far less, starting from under 50 cents SLR, Sangakkara and his wife Yehali have been engaging in unethical marketing attributing their active lifestyle to drinking Anlene. The manufacturer of this product has come under severe fire from cognitive scientists, pediatricians and public for their unethical marketing of Anchor Pedia Pro proclaiming unscientific benefits of brain development in children with the use of the said product. Clearly, Sangakkara and his wife, parents to twins themselves shamelessly advocate products of a company which is a player at the global milk food mafia well known for discouraging breast feeding and promotion of healthy lifestyle, instead using celebrities to endorse their dubious products.

Doing un to others as you would not do unto yourself or your children? Sangakkara still sounds like he is already a member of the Diyawanna.

The Cunning Response of Sangakkara

Sangakkara, 41 years of age, by the estimated life expectancy of a Sri Lankan male has nearly a good 40 years left to live. It would be imbecility to imagine that a self-promoting, self-enhancing person of his cunning , self-serving intellect would have retired from cricket to simply sit and spend the money earned by promoting carcinogens etc. till his last days. A master schemer of the highest order, it is quite possible that Sangakkara harbors political dreams that may send shivers down the collective spines of Sajith Premadasa, Naveen Dissanayake and lately Patali Champika Ranawaka. With the election of Imran Khan his possible long term strategic entry to politics has taken an accelerated manifestation.

Sangakkara has artfully evaded response when Ceylon Today published the above news article pointing towards a semi-denial by Sangakkara about entering politics. He quickly distanced himself from this news item neither denying, nor accepting with the following twitter: “I wonder who gave them that quote? Certainly wasn’t my words”. Apart from the slight error in grammar, he is spot-on on political cunning.

However considering the uncontested service he has done to Sri Lankan cricket and to global cricket as a superb player , and in spite of all his manifestation of deplorable avarice and pitiful greed, it is sad that man of his intellectual caliber is joined in the list of Presidential Hopefuls of 2020 that borders on fearsome, uncertain, dubious, impractical and sometimes hilarious: Gotabaya Rajapaksa, Nagananda Kodituwakku, Rohan Pallewatte, Malinda Seneviratne and of late the self-proclaimed “quintessential dream boy of Sri Lanka” Madhu Roxz (the highest trending Sri Lankan video artist on YouTube in the last week who has proclaimed his presidential intentions)!

It is high time that Sri Lankan electorate woke up from their misplaced adulations to face hard facts. Regardless of our personal level of attachment to cricket, we have all admired Kumar Sangakkara’s immense ability as a cricketer. But before suspending our ability to reason in the face of celebrity we should all take a hard look at what we want from a leader.

Sangakkara’s fact based track record shows one thing. He is more of the same. It is sad when a fan has to be the iconoclast. But sometimes it is the burden of the one who sees the truth to speak it. Or write it.

Sanga, thanks, but no thanks.

Sanga is not at all Presidential stuff.
He was in bed with the Jarapaksa sons endorsing Tharunyata Hetak and Nil Balukaya.
I think someone like Sajith, Harin or Navin should be the next Presidential candidate.

These kind of poorly researched articles should not be published! If you have valid reasons as to why Sagakara is not presidential material please do so without resorting to these kinds of ugly personal attacks on the man! Poor show by the author…

As a Community Physician I’ personally aware that when the Anlene ad come out in 2011 the College of Community Physicians of Sri Lanka and the Sri Lanka Medical Council both protested and requested Sangakkara to refreain form unethical marketing that misguide the public. He wrote a scathing sarcastic letter through his lawyers saying that the doctors should also jin his in promoting milkfood!
        I’m personally aware of this.
As Andrews has commented elsewhere in a comment why don’t search the PubMed/ Medline/ Google Scholar and look for Meta Analyses and Systematic Reviews that clearly establish the carcinogenic effects of these.
        compounds.
I also know that back when Aravinda De Silva was promoting sausages in an ad, Prof. Chandrika Wijeratne (then a junior doctor) wrote a letter to Aravinda De Silva explaining the harm done by his endorsement and he wrote back and apologized and did not appear in processed food marketing after that.
Sangakkara is a better man than the some of the thieves in parliament. But he should not be even considered for President or any high profile job.
He is a greedy man who has shown no discretion when it comes to money. Thank you

Kumar shouldn’t go for advertisement for products like the Anlene. People in this country believe these type of lies. If you tell lies 10 times, the person who lies and those who listen to the lie believe as if it is true. If the Sri Lankans with all their education can believe that wanda beheth on clothes can make a person barren. I never expected them to be so gullible

That Dr CM’s views are balanced and responsible should be obvious to all. We may not be able to identify you, but your sincerity seems clear to me.
          .
          Sad.
          .
It would be nice to see Sanga tuning a new leaf, as Aravinda is said to have done.
          .
Sanga has the intelligence, the charisma, the connections, to be an outstanding President of Sri Lanka. But clearly, he must focus on more enduing values. He has to undergo a sea-change. Do such things ever happen?
          .
The failure of My3 in the office of President seems to prove that somebody more cosmopolitan and sure of himself is needed. However, we would all do well to muse on why My3 was the correct choice in January 2015. My3’s cowardice has by now almost obliterated the solid virtues that he brought with him. This paragraph of mine (on the first of three pages of comments on this article) may not get read by many. If it is, there could well be howls of protest at anybody still remembering the hopes we reposed in him in 2015.

RE: Carcinogenic Kumar: Thanks, But No Thanks

Thanks for the write-up.Yes, Kumar is promoting poisons and getting paid for it. The low IQ-Idiots, in the land like no other, can’t get it.

Yes, Kumar Sangakara, is not presidential stuff in the Land of Native Veddah Aethho, A Land Like No Other, DO NOT deserve to be s exploited by Kumar to poison them and make then sick by diabetes, and 150 people/day (55,000/yr) die of heart disease, many as a result of diabetes and excess sugar that causes fat build ups.

There was the Military Industrial complex.

There is the Food Pharmaceutical Complex, all exploiting the poor low-IQ souls, to help them to get to after-life.

Grusha Andrews has launched an unwarranted tirade against Kumar Sangakkara mostly on “ethical” and imagined support of “carcinogenic foods”.
I think Grusha Andrews is a member of the environmental Mafia that includes such characters as Glyphosate Ratana Hamuduruwo.
There are many debatable points in this piece, but I will select a few to debunk and expose the faulty reasoning of the author.
” Currently the prevalence of diabetes mellitus in Sri Lanka ranges between 10.3% to 15% of the population depending on location.”
True, but is this mainly caused by consuming Coca Cola? Or even refined sugar? Certainly not. In the US, Diabetes is highest among South Asian immigrants, which points to a genetic tendency.

“Further, epidemiological studies have demonstrated the association between increased cancer mortality and high concentrations of trihalomethanes, a compound similar to surface cleaners found in Coca Cola “
The gratuitous reference to surface cleaners shows an ignorance of basic Chemistry and a desire to dramatize. The similarity of compounds is no indication of relative toxicity, if any. Toothpaste is a surface cleaner, but only a fool will claim it is poisonous. Hydrogen peroxide has one Oxygen atom more than water, and looks just like water. Does that make water poisonous like hydrogen peroxide?

The American FDA has however said that a person would have to drink a thousand cans a day to reach the levels that cause cancer in animals.
I do not think that Sangakkara is Presidential material myself either, but going to town with such scurrilous rubbish does no good for the writer’s reputation.

      Dear Sir/Madam,
I respond to your comment because you have always been a rational commentator of articles carried on CT and I value your opinion. To respectfully clarify:
      1. I am not a member of the ‘environmental mafia’ It is my belief that the extreme and unscientific views of the Venerable and his followers hurt the whole country.
      2. I agree that genetic predisposition of the Asians make their prevalence of diabetes higher. This is the very reason that unethical marketing by any person on sugary products should be vehemently discouraged. However, lifestyle factors are the singular most important predictor of type II diabetes. If you look for scholarly articles on a simple search engine life Google Scholar or Pubmed you will find enough independent data on this.
      3. The carcinogenic effects of Cola drinks is an established scientific fact. It is true that no one lives without contact of carcinogens in the modern world. But to deliberately promote such products, especially impacting children is highly unethical.
      4. I have only presented a few simple journal articles support my point. But if you search for Systematic Reviews or Meta Analyses which are the highest level of evidence based medicine you will find ample evidence to support my views.
      5. American FDA and the beverage industry will have their claim. The tobacco industry also say that since there is a threshold for number of cigarettes that need to be smoked in front of a child to cause cancer in children, it is ok to smoke. But do we smoke in front of a child? No. Because that it not how human biology work. Also it would be unethical.
I appreciate your candid views. I learn from my readers, deep and honest truths, even through their retaliatory anger.
      I remain, faithfully,
      Grusha Andrews

        Dear Grusha,
“I learn from my readers, deep and honest truths, even through their retaliatory anger.”
No, I am not angry, and thank you for your civilized response. I will elaborate.
I completely agree with you on the bogus claims of some manufacturers, re brain development in children or calcium supplements. Anlene for instance is what is left over after removing all the fat (sold separately as cheese/ butter). So it ought to be cheaper than full cream milk, but in fact is more expensive. Non-fat milk is cheaper than fullcream milk even in India. But you can’t expect the celebrity promoters to be aware of these things . They are picked (and paid) for their beauty, not specialized knowledge.
Further, it is unfair to pick and choose brand names when criticizing beverages. Why only Coke? Because it’s a dreaded “multinational”? Why not talk about Smak, which pretends to be fruit juice, or even Kik Cola? Isn’t Highland ice cream bad for children?
As to carcinogens, quite likely the biggest one is diesel smoke, but people are brainwashed into paranoia about minor sources .
Even microwave ovens are being blamed by online pundits nowadays!
I also believe that Western-inspired concerns about food are subject to change. One must remember that coconut oil recently
had a makeover from deadly clogger of arteries to a desirable (and expensive) health food for no apparent reason!

More fundamental than appearing in advertisement of harmful products is the question of the credibility of people who sell their names for a fee.

If he goes on as he does, he’ll be very successful in his personal life, but he’ll be doing a great deal of harm. If he now goes before the people at an election, he’ll be soundly thrashed, and for just those reasons that Grusha has highlighted.
          .
My other comments, I will put at the end of the article.

Better not compare Sangakkara and Imran Khan.
Imran Khan became an inspiration to youngsters for venturing into cricket on an international level. He rose to popularity with his amazing talent as one of the finest cricketers Pakistan has ever produced. His journey of transforming from the biggest heartthrob of cricket to an influential politician is highly impressive and motivating. He is credited for leading Pakistan to its first ever Cricket World Cup title in 1992, defeating England, thereby being termed as the most successful and prominent cricket captain of Pakistan. This champion cricketer surprised the world as an exceptional fast bowler and a great all-rounder, thus giving cricket an all-new form in the country. He excelled not just in the cricketing arena, but also in the political world and social ground. He retired from cricket in 1992 and entered politics by forming his own party – Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (Movement for Justice). He established the first cancer hospital, in Lahore, after losing his mother to the deadly disease, treating the poor for free. He is involved in raising funds for various health and educational projects, coming out a helping hand for the underprivileged and deserving.

Imran Khan proclaims himself to be Pakistan’s only political leader to make their money outside Pakistan, while keeping it all in Pakistan. He sold his London flat to buy a jungle on the outskirts of Islamabad, with cows for milk and yoghurt, a vegetable patch and even his own wheat – a picture of idyllic self-sufficiency. Now he just has to recreate at least something of that vision for the country which he has been elected to govern.
As for Sangakkara to be a candidate in 2020 Presidential Elections from Pohottuwa Party.

Sanga and Mahela is very lucky they did chose Cricket instead of Rugby and probably have met with an planned accident/fire in a car when the Jarapaksas was running the country.

Its not about an individual can change this rot., its the corrupt system and the rule of law that gong to the dogs we need to get on track.

The best for 2020 is get Gotler elected and run with ex-military men like Kamal G., that Weerasekera etc and people will find Yahapalanaya with thousands of ills were 1000 times better than the Gotler regime.

Sure, this is a man who said the open economic plan we have been on since 1977 is a failure. The JVP tirade against corruption is merely for political points. They have not been able to steal because they have not been in government in the past (except for a very short while). If they ever come to power, they will be just as corrupt or worse, and they will ruin the economy. Let us not forget how communism has turned out in other countries.

Mrs U, look at the picture on the front page of today’s Island, that’s the sort of president we have.

Mrs Udubaddewas response is a perfect example why Kumar Sangakkara is hated by most Sri Lankans. He refuses to give Sinhala Buddhists special treatment. All Sri Lankan’s are equal citizens to him. A true patriot. (Not thes pseudo patriots) He stands for the rights of each and every Sri Lankan citizen.
No one had a problem with Sanath Jayasuriya or Arjuna Ranathunga When they endorsed the same or similar products. this author seems to have a problem only when Sanga does it!!!

        Dear Anonymous,
        .
You have said, “Kumar Sangakkara is hated by most Sri Lankans.” There is truth in that, which means that there is no way he can be elected.
        .
We instinctively love the guy for so many things – starting with his cricketing brilliance and his being articulate.
        .
Unfortunately, it is true that this brilliant man has lost his way now, owing to his involvement with advertising. Refusing “to give Sinhala Buddhists special treatment” is fine, but the question is, can he REALLY really relate to the “common man”? This Grusha Andrews article is brilliant, and I’ve done some re-thinking. I’ll put a longer response on Page 3, where the chances of it being seen are greater.

I do not why some do not like to see snaga as next president ..
Crook and corrupt people always want to habe crook leaders in Sri Lanka so that they could milk public money .
    Sanga will allow that .
Snaga and mahela will never support crooks and corrupt people.
They will never rob public money .
They are gentlemen.they accomplished what they could with their skills and talent..not by back doors ..
    Sanga is highly educated lawyer.
His talk in London and many place tell us how skilful person is he?
Some people are jealously of him ?
He is not greedy for any power ..
But he should take it for the interest of 22 million Sri Lankans..
He could be next cricker to follow imran Kahn ..

Lankan 9, crooks sling mud at people who might clean up the system if they become president. They can’t survive if a clean up happens what do you expect! You see desperation and cheap attacks on the individuals who are willing to step up and clean up the system.

    Mrs Udubaddewa

Why not we appoint Ranjan Madugalle as our President. He’s more polished than Sanga, and fits your criterion, I think.

    You are racist.
    You are making trouble .
30 years of war not enough for you ….
You need more blood bath .

You could bring Malay army to concert Sri Lanka into Islam ?..

Recently Sanga had given orders to tailor 6 jaathika anduma kits for him. A tailor at Hercules Tailors told me.

    What for?

A new politician in the making?

On the day Sanga retired My3 graced the occasion and asked Sanga would he accept the office of high commissioner to UK. Sanga merely giggled away. That same evening I saw Sanga selling children’s noodles on TV. What diplomatic material is Sanga. What presidential material is My3. Me o my.

professional sports man and women have a short “career lifespan” to earn their living.
so it is understandale that they exploit their earning capacity when they at their helm.
This is an article in a poor taste.
I persnally dont think Sanga will ever venture in to politcs.
There are so many intellectuals and busness leaders who will be watsed in Sri Lanka sinhala buddhist corrupt politics . They contribute positively to the community from outside of politics

“They contribute positively to the community from outside of politics”

You know the country has been ruled by asses in government and in the state since 1956. Those asses cannot see beyond their nose.
They are elected/appointed and paid to stop all kind of progressive developments, projects, anything and everything that is good for the people, good for the country, good for the future, and easily achievable.

      Paul
let me have some of your robust defense for their will to stop everything progressive in this island.
By the way Gota is demanding Tamil support for his presidential election campaign. Perhaps he needs campaign fund. Tamil LTTE diaspora should raise funds for him openly.

Rajesh, I find it interesting why this author can’t make a valid argument that Sangakkara is not presidential material without turning it into a personal attack on him! Would be interesting to find out what the true motives of this author is. The points about him endorsing certain foods that are potentially unsafe instead of attacking the manufactures of such goods and the system that allows them to exist in the first place is suspect. He is not doing anything illegal.

I agree with you on most scores, but I also think that Grusha Andrews has done Sanga a great favour. She has shown a great guy where he’s going wrong.
      .
All this indiscriminate advertising is unethical.
      .
It is quite possible that this “Imran Khan phenomenon” may have tempted Sanga in to politics. But it is good that the shock of this article (remember it appears in Sinhala as well, although only on this website yet) is a good thing, because it forces us to face up to some real issues.
      .
Who know? Sanga may be able to “remake” himself, and actually become the President – but if so, only after facing up to the issues raised here.

Why I hate Sangakkara so much is that it is he who cut little Romesh Kaluwitharana out from national team. Sanga used father’s connections to creep into the team, his batting was very bad so wanted to become the wicket keeper. He knew to stay in the team you need to put two feet in two places – if batting failed will be picked as the wicket keeper. Out went the superb batsman, wicket keeper and above all human being – Romesh Kaluwitharana for good.

This is a sin and crime. I also blame thilanga sumathipala for this.

Sangakkaras cricket statistics says it all so please don’t come up with these ridiculous excuses. Romesh Kaluwitharana was at his retirement anyway. I too enjoyed watching Kaluwitharana and Jayasuriya but sadly every good thing comes to an end.

Sanga has a good batting average thanks to bangladesh, zimbabwe, etc. Also the playing in Lanka. His performances in Australia are absymimal.

Is Sanga the worst wicket keeper Lanka has ever produced.

(The likes of Mahesh Gunathillake, HIK Fernando come to my mind)

What “BS” this writer talking of? He should have got into the mater in a more professional manner (if he has one) and investigated what the real news was. This news came as a result of a conversation that Sanga had with a reporter attached to a news paper. The reporter, (now known is Ravi Ladduwahetty of Ceylon Today) and the paper hand tendered an “Unreserved Apology” to Sanga and in return in Twitter message, he (Sanga) has graciously accepted the apology. In that conversation, the question asked was: “is there any truth in the gossip of his readiness to contest in the Presidential Election”? Sanga’s reply was: “I do not want to reply to any gossips”. It was also agreed with the reporter that “conversation would not be published”. This reporter violated that “agreement” and hence the “Apology”. So what is this “BIG ANALYSIS” of Sanga’s background? Just leave this man – one of our GREAT MEN of Lanka alone and “Mind Your BUSINESS” some where else.

”Sanga, thanks, but no thanks” great stuff Grusha Andrews.

Celebrities, particularly, in SL have exploited their god given talents for making loads of money. I still remember, many years ago, overhearing a female clerk in the office, moaning to another, how her 10 year old son, aspiring to be a great cricketer, demanding to be fed with a brand of sausages marketed by one of the biggest conglomerates in SL because the caption blatantly stated that the strength Aravinda Silva gets to play cricket was from the sausages his mother prepares. Of course everybody takes the hype of advertisements with a pinch of salt but in the world of ten year old, it could be for real & it struck me how unethical & misleading advertisers were in promoting their stuff. In UK, such unsubstantiated advertisements would never be allowed by the advertising standard authority & very unlikely a celebrity would be involved, knowing it would be harmful to the reputation but in SL, celebrities even go, as far as, prostituting them selves. Ranathunga & Jayasuriya, are good examples. National heroes in their day, not content with the colossal sums of money earned from their sporting achievements, they had to go into politics as well to earn more, sacrificing their good name in the process, & what pathetic politicians they have turned out to be.

Grusha’s exposure of Sangakkara’s hypocrisy may be unpalatable to his fans but when, apparently, an editor of an electronic media, which proudly claims to be impartial & standing up for the truth, endorses an unsuitable candidate for the highest office in the country, perhaps, carried away by the charm & family pedigree but most of all by cricketing popularity, is unacceptable.

      You are right.
On the question of commercial advertising in SL there is hardly any supervisory or regulatory control by the government or an independent consumer body to exercise effective authority when it comes to the print and electronic media. Any shoddy product can be advertised to bamboozle and misinform the gullible consumer.

Huge crime for celebrities and athletes to earn money legally but nothing wrong with politicians stealing our hard earned tax money and the nations wealth! Bravo brave keep up the brilliant logic and Sri Lanka will become the next super power… if you think he is unsuitable that’s fine nothing wrong with that. He is a big question mark to me too.

Kumar Sangakkara has also been endorsing a bank for the past so many years. I had been a long time customer and depositor of this bank but later withdrew all the money but maintained my current account. About three years ago I asked for a temporary overdraft of Rs.10,000/- from the Manager of the Kandy Branch. Though the Manager knew me very well for quite a long time he said he will have to contact the Head Office in Colombo to obtain the approval for the TOD.

I was thoroughly miffed and retorted, “You are the Manager of this branch but you are so hesitant to give a small OD to a good customer. It looks like you don’t even have the discretionary power of a Peon!” and then walked out and closed my account.

Maybe it’s me, but I’m struggling to figure out how you being inconvenienced by a bank has anything to do with Sanga endorsing it. It’s a simple endorsement deal, people do it all the time. Did you honestly think Sanga will approve the OD for you?

Mati, too much IQ a common problem in Sri Lanka as you can see from most of the comments ha ha.
