If Obhrai’s intention was to pay tribute to the Tamil rebels (his own government categorized LTTE as terrorist) as Guardian says, that means Canada has scant regard for those who died at the hands of LTTE during the 33 year war.

Vavuniya was killed on 19.1.83. Then A.J.Rajasooriar, UNP Organiser for Jaffna on 12.8.83. Then, Mala Ramachandran, UNP MMC for Batticaloa on 1.9.83, Then Gnanachandiram, Ex District Judge Point Pedro and Government Agent Mullaitivu killed on 14.2.85.
Mind you the entire list is too long to list here. But for one thing all those victims were Tamil. They were killed for one reason. Because they didn’t fall in line with LTTE ideology. Somehow LTTE managed promote racism to such an extent that today most Tamils in the north have become jingoists.
British delegation including this minister and his Prime Minister who raised human rights concerns on the island never worried about those killings. They have their ulterior motives. They wanted to divide this country and have their bases here.

The war is over. Crimes were committed. No point dragging the fight further. Give peace a chance.
All politicians are reprehensible. So are we, the citizens. We allowed biases based on cast, creed, race, language and religion, to thrive. We taught our children that our race was superior and that our religion is the right one. And we all reaped the harvest of horror.
The politicians are incapable of not playing the race card. They will succumb to the lowest common denominator to gain the slightest popularity.
It is left for the common man to rise above the machinations of the politicians. Time we mended our wrong ways. Stop making racial slurs. Stop pushing the communities further apart. Try finding a common ground. Try not to provoke or belittle. Many people died during the war, Tamils, Muslims and Sinhalese. Have some sympathy for those who still grieve.
