Dr. Shafi Shihabdeen – a victim of the growing Islamophobic agenda in Sri Lanka – was remanded once more until July 27 despite the CID informing Court last month there is no evidence to detain the Doctor, let alone take him into custody.

Dr. Shafi was produced before Courts for the second time today since his arrest. He was formerly produced before Court on June 27, during which the CID informed court that the investigations into the charges levelled against him did not yield any evidence to arrest or detain him.
An AFP Fact Check report last week on the Kurunegala sterilization rumours, quoted the B report produced before the Kurunegala Magistrate Court that states the CID has specifically cleared Dr. Shafi and members of his family, from the charge of earning assets via illegal or dubious means.
Despite recommendations made by the CID, the Attorney General today insisted that Dr. Shafi has to be held in detention in order to facilitate further investigations into his wealth and assets.
Meanwhile, the Magistrate today also ordered the women who levelled accusations against Dr. Shafi of having performed unconsented tubal ligations, to undergo tests long with their husbands.

There were three allegations against this person. CID says that it has no evidence to implicate him regarding support to terrorists. According to right to information, CID must provide all documents about it, which made them to come to this conclusion. They must submit all his bank transactions to the public, explaining where any money from his account has gone to. It may not have gone to terrorists who took part in the bombing, but may have gone to extremist individuals and organisations where he had acted as a middle man between foreign donors. Other two counts of amassing unexplained wealth and sterilization of Sinhala women are yet to be investigated. Therefore keeping him under remand is the correct act, as he could interfere with the process either by bribery or by intimidation.

It is a practice adopted by women in villages and they get together as a group and have the operation done at private hospitals. The AG should take responsibility for the continued detention of Dr. Shafi when the CID informs the Court that “the investigations into the charges levelled against him did not yield any evidence to arrest or detain him.” Perhaps the Kurunagala Magistrate is not that well versed as the Chief Magistrate of Colombo who gave a ‘lesson’ to AG in the purported charges filed against the IGP and former Defence Secretary. The Colombo Chief Magistrate went on to castigate that people should not be arrested without having sufficient evidence in respect of certain cases. The AG has displayed publicly that he is yet to learn the A,B,C of the criminal procedure law of the land. Either arrogance and ego or sheer servility coupled with lack of self respect may be the reason for this action on the part of the AG. One wonders whether is it the AG who suffers from this malady or even others such as SG, Addl DSGs, Senior DSGs, DSCs, etc also suffer from a lack of courage to stand by their conviction!! Yes! Things can get complicated. I am reminded of an incident involving Mr. Thilanga Sumathipala who was the Chairman of SLT at that time. The press exposed an immigration scandal involving him. The Police really did not file charges. In fact a magistrate cleared him on a Poya day and fell into hot water for that. It was the AG who filed charges in the Magistrates Court, not the Police. Thilanga had to go all the way to the Court of Appeal to get bail. Of Course he was in hospital while in remand. Anyway he was convicted in the Magistrates Court and only on Appeal to the High Court he was acquitted. So, the relationships of these entities are not quite straight forward. If Dr. Shafi is innocent of the charges levelled by various section of the society I can understand what an agony he and his family must be undergoing. On the contrary if they are true one is reminded of a mini Dr. Josef Mengle. Well! We do have Magistrates who call a spade a spade and place where AG should be, like in the case involving the Ex- Defense Secretary and the IGP. The role of the AG is to do justice and not merely to prosecute. Let us hope that justice will prevail and let its wheels turn without delay.

Look at the level of education now ,their was a time lot of teachers were recruited by African countries and they brought the foreign exchange but now it has replaced by house maids and our students rely on abroad studies and inter national schools are mushrooming ,we are long away from neighboring countries

Six suspects arrested for damaging Buddha statues were produced before the Mawanella Magistrate Court today (July 11) by the CID. Meanwhile Muslim parliamentarians have decided to retake the ministerial portfolios according to MP Amir Ali at meeting with Fowzie, Hakeem and Rishad Bathiudeen.

UNP is committing political suicide by trying to shield these Islamic crooks thereby antagonizing Sinhala public.It is sad that several members in the opposition who had received money from Muslim politicians and businessmen are also in the game to cover up these dastardly acts of Muslims. Recently a boat from Pakistan with narcotics was apprehended off Galle and a Pakistani who claimed that he was gem merchant was arrested with drugs in Katunayake. This is also part of an onslaught by Islamic extremists to take over Sri Lanka.
