An AFP Fact Check report last week on the Kurunegala sterilization rumours, quoted the B report produced before the Kurunegala Magistrate Court that states the CID has specifically cleared Dr. Shafi and members of his family, from the charge of earning assets via illegal or dubious means.
Despite recommendations made by the CID, the Attorney General today insisted that Dr. Shafi has to be held in detention in order to facilitate further investigations into his wealth and assets.
Meanwhile, the Magistrate today also ordered the women who levelled accusations against Dr. Shafi of having performed unconsented tubal ligations, to undergo tests long with their husbands.

Proportion of infertility in Kurunagala need to be determined as per other areas of the country. It’s a long road ahead. [The country’s most senior Gynecologist and Obstetrician, Prof. Wilfred E Perera is questioning the right for the Director of the Kurunegala Teaching Hospital to oppose the testing of women who have complained that a Surgeon in the hospital rendered them infertile against their will.
The surgeon, Dr. Shafi Siyabdeen was remanded by the Kurunegala Magistrate on Wednesday, July 11.
In a letter released on Social Media Prof. Perera points out that the Director Dr. Sarath Weerabandara had said these tests should not be done because “there could be complications.”
The letter has been sent to Weerabandara and copied to the Kurunegala Magistrate.
Prof. Perera points out that Weerabandara is not a Medical Doctor but a Dentist and as such does not have the necessary expertise to decide whether the testing is safe or not.
“I failed to comprehend how you without any medical qualification could make this illogical statement when we as Gynecologists have been carrying out this simple investigation of a dye test to all the women who have come to us with sterility,” the Professor asked.
He added that he has carried out thousands of these tests and has heard of no complications through this procedure in Sri Lanka.
The Professor also says that this issue has to be resolved by Gynecologists only to see whether the Fallopian tubes are patent and that should be the final verdict.]
