Downfall Of Rajapaksa Regime Is In Hands Of Oppositions Alliance

Finally the two provincial council elections are over! Winning candidates are celebrating their election victory and some political parties are celebrating the increase in their voter base.

UPFA leaders are stating that the people are with them and they have sent a clear message to the opposition and international community again. However, I am sure UPFA leader Mahinda Rajapaksa is a worried man, after reading the recently concluded election results.  He knows he won the election with a landslide, but the results are showing that his power-base is gradually decreasing. It is clear that he has lost his war victory slogan which is the main trump card he had for the past five years to bamboozle the opposition parties in past elections.

The ruling regime campaigned heavily by highlighting the UNHRC resolution as the major subject in their election campaign and urged people to vote for them to send a clear signal to the International Community. But clearly, the majority of voters ignored that plea and don’t give a damn for this regime. Clearly the voters instead of sending a strong message to the world, sent a crystal clear message to Rajapaksa and his regime about the rising cost of living and other national issues he has failed to resolved.

After analysing the final results of the two recently concluded  provincial councils election, almost 34% of the registered voters abstained from voting. Of these 34% absentee voters, which is equivalent to nearly two million votes, there are voters who might be working as expatriates in foreign countries which I assume is not more than 15%.

Nowadays fraudulent voter registration is not that easy. In past decades,  fraudulent voter registration was practiced by extreme supporters of the political parties. However, recent policies by the Elections Commission to deter that type of fraud is very successful. Therefore it is clear that at least 20% of the registered voters have refrained from voting.

Some citizens who refrained from voting have lost their faith in this regime and also they see that there is no strong opposition. On the other hand, some  are not interested in voting as they think this is a local election and not very important to them. They have reasons to stay away. But, it’s important to know that the majority have ignored Rajapaksa’s plea based, on his so called “Electric Chair” theory.

As we know, only 34% of the registered voters have cast their ballot in favour of the ruling UPFA party.  Also the president failed to maintain his popularity when compared with the last Western and Southern provincial council elections back in 2009. The last Western Provincial Council election held just one month before the war ended and the Southern Province election was held five months after the war victory. Definitely, he was riding on a high at the time and delivered excellent results in those two elections. So clearly these recent election results have given him more worries than the joy of celebration!

In order to garner the votes from floating voters you need innovative and constructive campaign strategies. Floating voters are the decision makers, however they normally don’t exercise their votes in local elections but primarily cast their votes at national elections. Increasingly,  it looks like they may stay away from the future national elections as they don’t see a sense of hope from the ruling regime or opposition parties.  Unfortunately, at the moment they don’t see any prospects from either side. Chances are high nonetheless, for the oppositions to show the people something positive and constructive in order to get them into the polling centers.

Political leaders always spin the final outcome with different types of theories, rather than accepting their defeat or loss of their popularity. The ruling UPFA regime is stating that they won a landslide and the opposition says that higher abstentions from voting means it’s a vote against the ruling regime. So both sides are not willing to accept a reality which is quite clear. In order to trigger the minds of floating voters into deciding who is the best alternative to govern them in the future, they must see some positive outcome in the recently concluded provincial election results.

Suppose the major opposition parties had formed a United Opposition Alliance prior to this recently concluded provincial election, floating voters would have witnessed the final results as a tight race between the ruling UPFA and the United Opposition Alliance.  This would  trigger their decision making mind positively and they may take interest in sliding towards an opposition alliance in any future national elections.

Nevertheless, it’s clear Rajapaksa’s regime has received a warning message while the opposition received a positive sign from the voters. Now, it seems the voters are slowly sliding to the opposition side and they want the opposition to become stronger and provide an alternative to this regime. However, if the opposition wants to become the real alternative government in the near future, they must change their stance to attract absent voters and especially the floating voters.

Unity and team work are the two most important pillars that should be adopted by the opposition. The United National Party is the grand old party of this country  and the main political party of the opposition side. The UNP still has a considerable voter base, though the party is failing to provide a proper alternative party leader to challenge Rajapaksa.

The UNP can play a major role in a regime change with the alliance of all the other opposition political parties and especially the JVP, the newly formed Democratic Party and other ethnic minority political parties in Sri Lanka. Therefore, they must brace themselves to form a United Opposition Alliance by negotiating with all the political parties which are ready to support democracy and implement good governance. However before this move, they must set their own house in order.

Today the United National Party can be seen as ‘Disunited’ National Party in the eyes of the public and their grass root supporters. That is the crystal clear truth, though their leaders always refute such claims whenever the media raises a question about their internal issues. UNP seniors must accept the fact that the people are fully aware of their party’s current position. Therefore rather than spinning the situation about the lack of internal democracy in order to hide the fact, they must get into real action mode now. As a strategist myself, I always believe that a political party with unity and great team work is the best way forward to tackle a mighty political machine.

The UNP must dismantle the Leadership Council first. Thereafter, they must immediately change the party leadership by bringing in a new leader. At least they should emulate the example of the JVP. They are the smallest political party but their heart is big when it comes to team work and compromise with the front-line members of the party. The latest leadership change is a very good example for the UNP to follow. The JVP elected Anura Kumara Dissanayake as their new leader soon after Somawansa Amarasinghe offered to step down from the leadership. Former leader Somawansa Amarasinghe decided not to retire after serving the leadership chair for more than two decades and he became a team member by accepting the position of international Secretary of the JVP.  This is the module mostly followed by political parties with strong internal democracy in the West.

After the declaration of the new UNP leader, the party leadership should play a major role and strategise with all parties for the formation of a United Opposition Alliance.  Thereafter this Opposition Alliance should form a leadership council with a team of strong front-line leaders representing all elements within the Opposition Alliance. Consequently, this council should declare a new leader of this Opposition Alliance. It may be someone from within the alliance or an outsider who has charisma and leadership skills to herald a new chapter in Sri Lanka’s politics.

The ruling UPFA’s days are numbered now and it’s time for the major opposition parties to huddle and draw up a political agenda for at least a 12 – 18 month program to get the voters on board with their support to face any future major election.

After reading various columns on the meaning of the provincial council election results(Kumar David, Dayna Jayatillke, Phillips and now Muheed)I must say Dr DJ has been the most pragmatic.

“Sri Lanka has a Presidential form of govt and not Parliamentary” says DJ. Bingo!. Nuff said.

These results may be presented as the opposition chiseling away at the governments popularity but it is trending towards a parliamentary election results not Presidential. MR is the man as there is no alternative(tina).

However, if the opposition can get a majority in parliament then the prospects of a speaker accepting a impeachment motion improves in big way.

    Muheed Jeeran,

That is the million dollar question. Where is this leader who can lead an opposition alliance? Do you have any suggestions? I can’t think of any.

The demise of democracy in Sri Lanka is not that the Rajapaksa Clan have chosen the autocratic path, but that the opposition have imploded and have become inconsequential.

No point talking about the UNP. Theirs is a jaded leader who does not understand that no one wants him. He does not have the foresight to see the writing on the wall. If Ranil continues to be his petulant self and hang on to the leadership of the UNP by manipulating the so called recently convened leadership council, Rajapaksa will laugh his way back to the presidency for another 6 years. And there is that other problem case Sajith. He feels that he is the rightful heir to the UNP leadership and is doing his utmost to disunite the UNP. Ranjan Ramanayaka at least is making some strong relevant noises within the parliament but the party is refusing to recognise his talents.

In the absence of any credible candidate for the leadership of this imaginary United Opposition Alliance I propose the name of Muheed Jeeran. I have no idea who you are Muheed, or your background, but you will be as good as any out there for that job at the moment.

Perci Mahadenamuttha no doubt a worried man these days.
A united opposition front is the solution or rather that’s the easiest way to get rid of this regime but its a Herculean task to bring all leaders to a common platform.

The writer says that there must be a leadership change in the UNP.
But doesn’t say who should lead the party.
Comparing UNP to JVP is ridiculous.
The best idea for the UNP would be to convince CBK and get her support.

You guys are amazing … After NINE years of Mahinda Rajapakse as president, the Government decreased its numbers by 246,193 votes (compared with 2009, Source: Dept of Elections). Jayalalitha , Vaiko has no place to hide … Modi now has upper hand … He very nationalistic and for stong central government .. He knows the schemes of USA first hand with his own experience … He was once denied even a visa to USA … Most of all, he is realizing that this is the ASIAN century … He would make bridges with all Asian countries including Pakistan and China … Ofcourse, he would close the hole which is leading to disintegration of India … That is the dream of EEELLLAAAMMM in India and Sri Lanka … For that, he would give all the help SL need … LTTE rump has very very bright future in years to come … Hold on to the seats and tight your belts as you had not before! ..

MaRa also has the same fear…..You guys are paranoid eh?

I am not a CBK supporter but UNP needs her support to wipe out this ugly cursed family completely from politics.

We will have to protect our country from these Mahasonas/Ririyakas.

‘Just 246,193 votes after long long nine years…’ bla bla bla you can sing to your gallery in Beliatte, Horana, Kesbewa.

          Senarath,
The turning point of the recently concluded PC polls was Galle city. Mara must be having nightmares these days because he knows that the cracks appearing in ceilings.

Losing Capitals of Ruhuna & Basnahira is a massive blow to the beggar bugger. Let his ‘Dobies’ praise his leadership by saying we have won comfortably, we will in the meanwhile slowly but surely bring that ceiling down.

Muheed, Compare to your last article this is pretty mediocre. Many CT commenters already said what you have written. You are a good writer, keep writing mate.

Overall perception of the opposition is that it is potpuorri of different ideologies, leaders and style of leadership. Hardly anything that can bring them together. The divisions really stand out.

What is special about the UPFA is that it is also a similiar mix of differing parties or worse, but is held together by MR who manages to deal with each on a one to one basis. They are bribed, coerced or convinced to stay together.

MR is a charismatic figure no doubt. Opposition needs to come up with a strong unifying character of the same stature. RW needs to go in for some management training at IIT. He has gone to MIT to lecture on ‘how to lose’. Maybe MIT wants its students to learn ‘how not to lose all the time’ by listening to RW.

    Muheed Jeeran,

“The UNP must dismantle the Leadership Council first. Thereafter, they must immediately change the party leadership by bringing in a new leader. “

Above statement is the crux of your essay, RW is a spent force, period! there is absolutely no point in highlighting RW’s Mr clean image , international acceptance bla bla any more , people are well aware of all these , question one must ask , can he win the next presidential election ? Answer is a resounding NO ! Then who can? Can Karu J do the job ? , No it’s a big NO as well ,it is an absolute waste of time, even to talk about Sajith’s candidacy here !so let’s move on .Can Gen SF win the election ? he had the best chance to do in 2010 , for some strange reasons it did not materialize and now he has made more enemies than friends and can’t be taken as a serious threat to MR , then it comes to Ven Sobitha thero , can he do it ? yes it is possible , but does he have what it takes , in other words , can he face the barrage of 24×7 insults/intimidation/assaults ? Very doubtful! Can we afford to take any chances on this fateful decision any more? Then who is left? whether one likes it or not , only option is CBK , yes we all know she is the most inefficient/corrupt president SL has ever produced after the incumbent , but do we have a another choice ? Who is better qualified/suitable to challenge MR than CBK ? to offset CBK’s dubious past and honesty & integrity, VEN Sobitha thera’s name must be included with CBK. let’s analyze CBK’s suitability & credentials for the life changing 2015/16 presidential election.

    1) Since CBK has served as the president of SL for two successive terms, she is well accustomed & aware of all the loop holes(Jilmarts) where MR is planning to take for granted, not only she will make sure that no stone unturned but also using her charming “Vatti Amma “ style oratory skills to pull the crowds from the day one and will expose all MR’s misdeeds in most appropriate colorful language. SL people’s voting patterns are very peculiar, majority of the voters never bother to look at the policies he or she intends to implement , rather concentrate on emotional part , direct benefit and the desired colour of the party.CBK matches the perfect candidate mould for our gullible masses and they will not think twice before voting for her , end result , unprecedented voter turnout.

2)UNP is in an awkward position where they can’t nominate their own candidate who can defeat MR , yet can’t afford to languish in the opposition camp another 6 bloody long years , what is the only option left as the single biggest party in SL , take the initiative to name a common opposition candidate where they have upper hand in pulling the strings .majority of UNP supporters would support CBK/Ven Sobitha combo as the common candidate as there is no any other alternative from UNP camp , if UNP leaves it’s all internal fighting aside and puts the weight behind CBK/Ven Sobitha combo , majority of UNP support base will be on the CBK/Sobitha thero side.

    3) JVP , difficult to predict their stance on the issue !

4)in all probability Gen SF will support CBK/Ven Sobitha combo led coalition as there is no any other option.

    5) TNA led all Tamil parties will definitely support any one who is coming forward to defeat MR .

    6) All most all the Muslim parties know what is in store for them under MR , hence all most all of them will support any one to defeat MR.

7)All the other small parties will flock to common candidate’s camp once the ball get started rolling.

with the impending imminent danger from the UN/US/EU, MR’s autocratic maneuvering ability will be very much limited , his every anti democratic move will be seen in a magnified glass and will be exposed . Whether MR likes or not , he will have to implement LLRC recommendations , which means 17 th Amendment , once the 17 th Amendment is in force , foreign observers presence for the election is a real possibility ! abusing of Government media , resources , funds will be a real challenge for MR, in other words, MR will be in a level playing field after an extended honey moon period.

All in all, MR will not be in a very comfortable position in months to come , he knows it and all his cronies know about it , MR ‘s only way to save his skin is the Military, period.

I dont agree you calling her ” she is inefficient and corrupt”. But agree with all the rest. At the time, JVPrs + Unpers killed countless numbers of students/youth in 89, nobody was there to restore piece in that country, but CBK managed to do so. That I would never forget.

Truth is, there is nobody that has gone up to the current corrupt regime. Not only in Srilanka, but also in entire Asia. The man in power abuse every inborn child making everyone debtors, while not thinking about his offspring´s shopping for example. Proofs are there, that offsprings dont care buying them a pair of shoes for 1000 dollars while poor of the poor falling much deeper. Whose money is this ? Have the family got gold springs as Zimbabwian or some oil nations inherit ? No, lanken bribary & corruption committees should study the levels of assets prior to Presidency, during presidency and after presidency… in thatway, they can bring this a clarity. How can he earn respect, if our folks are not the born fools ? Thirisannu have repeatedly voted him into power. Not thinking twice. Today, we accuse of the others. Not anyone else, highly vulnerable naive masses in this country should be accountable for all the kalakanni thathwaya (miserable situation) that we the majority face today.
CBK may have been slow, but she is a woman. Today´s sakkili parliament composed of robbers, killers, thugs of muliple kind and and… would not allow anyone non-thugs to come to power. Best this is CBK to build up a coalition (UNP, part of SLFP(upfa), JVP, DP etc), there, she just need another 10-15% votes to be taken. There exist even more that are against MR but being unable raise the voice because of threats.. that will surely take the side of CBK for sure.
I never believe that CBK had earned billions during her days. Those who wrote about CHAURA rajina should stand up bringing real views about MR (Buru king). If CBK is 100 times bad, MR is 100000000000000000000000 bad. That is the level of their politics.

        Siri ,

i understand your concern , believe me ,Siri i was a direct victim of 87/89 beeshana era , at that time Bloody JVPers never bothered to think twice before they pull the trigger for those who opposed their views , the place where i used to work were full of Mad Jvpers , one day they ordered the whole work force to come out to street to show solidarity for them , few of my colleagues and i refused to obey their orders , as a result of that, next day one of my colleague had to kneel down in front of the main gate displaying “i’m traitor” till noon , from that day onwards i’d to leave my well paid job and continued to live in mortal fear as they were looking for me , i hated JR’s governance style but refused to accept JVP style of governance as an alternative force.

yes CBK managed to change that “Beeshanaya” up to a certain degree but not “Dooshanaya” , there are enough evidences to prove her guilt.moving forward , CBK is the only hope for a see change in SL .

I have no doubt, she has learnt more from the past and all critiques passed on her. We cant expect her to be the best leader. But if we must get rid of the curse in power, we have no other choice than CBK. She was more democratic – above all. That I like in her.
I also believe that silent masses will heart out if she would make hopeful the nation. But we cant never expect that from Rajapakshe. But I have no idea whether this is the common view. However, I know – I travelled to the country at the time war was its height, but not many were that abusive as it the levels sense by today. It was popular rhetoric of so called radical culprits, to have said, that she sold LANKEN carrier to the Emirates. I usually fly by Emirates from London and Düsseldorf. Even flying on emirates, I heard some attacking her abusively. But the truth as it is, she earned for the country billions, but today billions get added to the collosal losses. My cousins said to me, it was her days that they got tangible pay hikes for the first time in teaching carrier.
Even today, I dont know how many of my batchas went missing in that insurgency. I only knwo few fathers and mothers that lost their only sons have become life long sick.
JVPers of today are highly acceptable than their ideologies in late 80ties. I love listening to AKD- but practically

Theory = NOT Practice; it is not at all easy in developing societies such as ours. In sl, just a rumour can make a big change in a person within a very sort period of time, that it is the case in Europe.I have no doubt, if SF had been given chance to campaign in Hambantota area, he could have gotten more votes. They are the winners of the election – becoming the 3 rd force. State media even made public statements saying that SF will definitely leave the country but to see his achievements with flying colours

          Srilal,

Yes, I truly agree with you of nominating Madam Chandrika/Ven Sobitha Thero as a common candidate.

Infact I wrote her candidacy as a common opposition to MR about an year ago, saying that she is the only challenge that Rajapakses fear.

The reasons I gave as follows.

1)President Chandrika is the person who nominated MR as the SLFP Presidential candidate on condition he give PM post to Anura. But MR kicked not only her, but also Anura from SLFP. MR did not give Anura either PM ship or a Foreign Ministry Post, but a mere Tourism Minister post.
Therefore Madam Chandrika is looking for Revenge from MR and he knows it. She is just waiting for her time, and Ranil going to USA is part of this wider plan. Both MR and Basil kicked CBK and Anura from SLFP and she is looking for revenge. She will det it at the correct time.

2)Also Madam CBK srill has support from her old SLFP block and the voters. Therefore she will be able to penetrate MR’s UPFA vote base. The final fight going to be is betweem MR’s Southern Hambanthota Buddhists who support MR VS Kandy and rest of the counries Buddhists who support Madam CBK. Therefore you could guess who has more Bugghist vote base.

3)Of couse JVP is going to support CBK. The reason is it is CBK who released JVP leaders and others from Prison and made them a valid political party to contest for elections.
Also she is a friend of AKD where she took him on many foreign trips when JVP was with SLFP.

4)Of couse Gen.SF is going to support CBK. Gen.SF is after MR’s blood for jailing him, and chasing his son in law from Sri Lanka. He will get his revenge from MR at the correct time by proposing Chandrika as a common candidate. Also Gen.SF still has over 100,000 of his loyal soldiers in the forces who are ready to defend him.

5)All Tamils are against Rajapakses for not solving their Tamil problem. Therefore TNA and all other Tamil parties are going to back CBK.

6)Muslims are against Gota and BBS. Rauf Hakim and Azad Sally say it openly. Therefore the Muslim community is going to support Madam Chandriks.

7)Of couse, the Christian Sinhala and Catholic communities going to support CBK, due to BBS racists who broke Christian churches are being backed by Gota.

8)Also CBK has more backing and reputation than MR from International community, and Sri Lanka’s expatriate community.

9)Also yesterday Rev.Sobitha gave a warning to Rajapakses saying unless he abolish 18th amendment, and re introduce 17th Amendment, Rev.Sobitha Thero is going to bring in CBK as a common candidate for next Presidential election. He also said soonafter CBK win Presidential election, within six months he is going to Abolish the Presidentship and going back to the old Parliament with Priminister as head.

THEY SAY ENEMY OF MY ENEMY IS MY FRIEND. SAME HERE.

Therefore when you take all of the above into consideration, Madam CBK has a clear cut victory over Rajapakses.

Therefore Madam Chandrika is the best choice to win next Presidential elections.

She is sure to win as Night and day. Rajapakses days are numbered.

Did you read it today´s news – Maithripala Sirisena adds that he has is coming from a very powerful UNP background.

What does this mean to the nation ?

Is UPFA already divided ? Then the chances for CBK are becoming the reality.

And to sense even if MR himself appealed before the nation resounding them about the danger before them with Geneva defeat – nevertheless people to abstain from voting sends them a great message. All these are no issues to Thilanga Sumathipala or Media Kehelmal- things will show its way how in the months to come.

            Jayantha ,

“Infact I wrote her candidacy as a common opposition to MR about an year ago, saying that she is the only challenge that Rajapakses fear.”

Jayantha i remember either you or one Mahela proposing her name first , but i was not that convinced about CBK candidacy then ,tell you frankly , even today i have no confidence in her , but the issue what we are facing is far too dangerous to ignore ,so I also hop in the band wagon ! say CBK won the next presidential election ,yet there is no guarantee that she will honor her word this time (Remember her earlier promises),but it will be much easier to deal with CBK than this current Junta who have gone completely out of control.

it is truly ironic that we have an opposition leader whose main role is confined to facilitating opposition related affairs to MR, Ranil’s Deputy long John A is said to be the acting opposition leader during RW’s absence , what a tragic comedy ? JR’s old guards must vacate the place for young blood to find it’s way , they don’t seem to care about the future of SL or their grand old party , rather they’ve taken UNP for a right royal ride ,it looks more like a elite private club of Ranil’s .
LLRC implementation is going to be a paradoxical situation for MR , especially 17 th Amendment implementation , he can’t find any excuse not to do so , LLRC is MR’s baby and he has necessary 2/3 majority in parliament , what excuse can he find now ?

    Voter turnout
According to the writer 34% have not voted at the last election.Barring those who work in foreign lands at least 20% have refrained from voting.
I wish to say though it seems to be true it is misleading to a certain extent.
At the presidential election in 2010 only 74.50% have voted. What happened to the rest?
At the presidential election in 2005, the voter turnout was only 73.73%.
At the provincial elections held in 2008-2009 voter turnout was 65.84%
At the parliamentary elections in 2004 voter turnout was 75.96%
The above statistics show at provincial elections less people vote.
Even at presidential elections only 75% vote.
At least 25% don’t vote at every elections. Why? Some are overseas. Some are dead. Some are sick at home or in hospitals. Some are behind bars. Some are not interested in voting.
So now you can arrive at your conclusions why 34% refrained from voting
    at the last provincial elections

Did you also hear that today Rowlin Perera was discharged from Prison after paying the Bail bond.

      Surprise……Isn’t it.

For CT readers all these looks like another MARA conspiracy to dismental UNP.

MARA and Sajith combination wanted to topple Ranil and take over UNP leadership, similar to how old Premadase kicked Gamini Dissanayake and Lalith Athulathmudali from UNP.

Subsequently both of them died in a LTTE bomb blast along with Mallimarchchi and other UNP MP’s during a UNP Rally which is another conspiracy.

Now they find 16 Billion rupees in Sajith’s home in MARA’s home town Hambanthota.

Mara duped and trapped Sajith point blank.

Sirasa News first back Sajith under MR’s instructions. Now Rowlin Perera is bailed out. What a Joke………

      [Edited out]

MARA/SAjith combination conspiracy to topple Ranil and UNP came to light.

MARA’s true Colours are shown to the world.

Sri Lanka’s Currency notes are the Cheapest looking and the lowest grade quality paper out of the whole world.

Anybody could print Sri Lanka Currency notes from a Home computer with a Laser jet printer.

Mara Kangetta hit our Central Bank, and now 5,000 and 10,000 rupee currency notes are printed in homes. What a joke.

      Asia’s Miracle……World’s wonderland……. Shit eating pigs.

More MARA Hambanthota drama to come.

Previous dramas……Kangetta, Greese Yaka,Julampitiya Amarae, Gobi, Pig eating shit………Rowlin Perera…….

      What is next…….

then it will be more like ” iguru deela miris gaththa wage”. Anyway, people will decide it – whether or not to see the nation/country further be abused by these idiots.

That alone makes it very clear Premadasa junior is only capable of abusive acts.

mj, I heard that Rowlin Perera’s Sister-in-Law, Shenali Waduge who washes Gota’s & Mara’s dirty linen time to time with her racial write ups, also was involved in influencing Rowlin’s bail out apparently.

CT-Please find out further facts specially about Shenali Waduge since she writes articles here.

I happened to read that brother in law of Gonraja openly makes statements – that Mahinda Rajapakshe treats his relatives very kind. Can you imagine ? this has now become as a matter of course – this is the reason why the donkey fails implementation of law and order.

      Rasika@,
I am also in your opinion in that regard. But many argued other way around.
Anyway, I wonder why the press (no journlists) yet to bring an interview with the FORMER EC to get the facts where he had been hidden on that day – and what went through regarding the pressure he mentioned in that public statements. I am so thankful if anyone would add the “all realities” about the issue.

The Buddha said this a long time ago:-

“You should respect each other and refrain from disputes; you should not, like water and oil, repel each other, but should, like milk and water, mingle together.”
