Ensure Justice Against Hate Crimes – UNP Tells Policing Authorities

The United National Party has today urged the law enforcement authorities to take legal action against those responsible for hate crimes.

Issuing a statement the UNP Chairperson, Malik Samarawickrama said: “There is no place for religious intolerance and racial hatred in the 21st century Sri Lanka as it emerges a peaceful, stable and a strong economy and a beacon of hope for democracy.”

Malik Samarawickrama

“No individual or organization causing religious tensions should be allowed to escape prosecution. Sri Lanka cannot be pulled back to the dark days of war when tens of thousands of lives were lost. The economic stagnation and international isolation are things of the past.

“However, political forces relegated to the dustbin of history are attempting to exploit extremism and extremists in the hope of returning to power. The UNP, with its strong commitment to national unity and harmony, will resist such bankrupt political opportunists and urge the authorities to swiftly bring them to justice. They will not prevail,” Samarawickrama further said.

We publish below the statement in full:

The United National Party notes with deep concern the recent attempts by subversive elements to sabotage the reconciliation efforts of the national unity government led by President Maithripala Sirisena and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe.

Since its founding, the UNP has remained a secular political party fostering unity while building a truly Sri Lankan identity.

The UNP welcomes the statement of the Cabinet of ministers, the Prime Minister and the President to use the full force of the law against those causing religious tensions, racial hatred and undermining the efforts at reconciliation since the new government came to power.

At the January 2015 presidential election as well as the August 2015 general election, the UNP and its allies received a mandate for their reconciliation efforts. The UNP will not waver in ensuring that ethnic peace, religious harmony and rule of law are maintained.

A corner stone of every religion is non-violence and the respect for others. Those who spread hate and instigate violence are only undermining the faiths they claim to protect.

The UNP joins the President and the Prime Minister in urging the law enforcement authorities to bring to justice those responsible for hate crimes. There is no place for religious intolerance and racial hatred in the 21st century Sri Lanka as it emerges a peaceful, stable and a strong economy and a beacon of hope for democracy.

No individual or organization causing religious tensions should be allowed to escape prosecution. Sri Lanka cannot be pulled back to the dark days of war when tens of thousands of lives were lost.  The economic stagnation and international isolation are things of the past.

However, political forces relegated to the dustbin of history are attempting to exploit extremism and extremists in the hope of returning to power. The UNP, with its strong commitment to national unity and harmony, will resist such bankrupt political opportunists and urge the authorities to swiftly bring them to justice. They will not prevail.

The UNP has faith in the vast majority of Sri Lankans to protect the freedoms they enjoy under the new unity government of President Sirisena and Prime Minister Wickremesinghe.

Srilanken POLICE will have to its credibility longer they wait to arrest the bugger Ghanasara.

Entire world sees it, that the police has failed to arrest the bugger, in a country that anything and everything is done to eleminate the terror. This sounds to be that contradictory.

In any country which promotes good governance , should have the mentality to give LAW and order the place on the list.
But this country even under current duo to stay entangled is beyond our comphrehension.

    God bless srilanka.

“{To ensure justice against hate crimes}”, Remove the Minister of Law and Order forthwith.

An attempt to plant riots between Buddhists/Muslims didn’t materialize.

Another attempt to plant riots between Buddhists/Christians didn’t materialize.

Now it has taken a dramatic turn of “violation of human rights of the Opportunist” who tried to incite Christians against Buddhists!!!

When Gnanasara Thero raised issues against bulldozing Buddhist Archaeological Sites, forcibly acquiring lands belonging to Temples/Buddhist Sacred Sites and systematic and some “unholy attempts’ to convert Buddhists into other religions using poverty/helplessness as tools, the Human Rights Watch didn’t issue a Statement to “protect the rights of a Buddhist Religious Activist”, purely because Buddhism is majority’s religion in Sri Lanka.

The HRW’s mandate is to safeguard the rights of the minority. They don’t recognize the rights of the majority!!!

Let’s face the reality. Buddhists are under attack on every front. This is the time to use our brains. Buddhism should NOT be allowed to use as a weapon in a power struggle!!!

Soon, Ranil may have to borrow Wimal’s famous words “international conspiracy” to describe the “upcoming situation”. There are all the signs that their “La La Land” going to be ended up in “Hell or HIgh Water”.

I have no love for this Government, but I care for my religion. I am deeply disturbed and hurt with various attempts to tarnish the image of Buddhists in Sri Lanka.

Sinhalese Buddhists are a powerful nation, “yet we are a minority” in a world where Christianity and Islam rule. It is imperative for us to protect Buddhism. Though we should not take part in the present “Political Bullfight”, that Opportunist who tried to incite religious tension on a popular TV should be dealt with in accordance with the law.

        Champa,

Is religion something personal that provides you guidance, spiritual wellbeing etc, or something to flaunt around, drum up hysteria, fight over etc? You clearly are in the latter camp. You are not an exemplary Buddhist, hence all the fuss!

“some “unholy attempts’ to convert Buddhists into other religions using poverty/helplessness as tools, “……………………………………….
Many Buddhists are poor precisely because they have to feed a parasitical sangha who dont do any useful work but extract everything from the poor people. Other religions help their poor. The clergy are allowed to work among the people and are paid salaries. They don’t expect you to give them a seat in the bus either.

Champa: “……..I am deeply disturbed and hurt with various attempts to tarnish the image of Buddhists in Sri Lanka”. Do you have in mind the self-styled defenders of Buddhism?

Across the Strait the Hindu Cow Vigilantes are bringing disrepute to Hinduism. At home, Lankan Muslim leaders are putting on a brick-wall over MMDA reform.

Champa: ” It is imperative for us to protect Buddhism.”——————————Ganasara is not even protecting Para-Sinhala “Buddhism”. He is actually protecting Maraism ( who opposed Buddha), and destroying pristone Buddhism. Since the average IQ of the Para-Indian Sinhala from Kalinga Bengals Orissa is around 79, this makes it easier for him along with the Para-Sinhala “Buddhist” MPs, with low IQs and low qualifications as well. ———————————————Remember, Mahawamsa is an Insult to the Buddha, and Sinhala “Buddhism” is an insult to Buddhism, just like Wahhabism is an Insult to Islam.

Having the first in the world of hanging Buddhist priests (2) after the assassination of SWRD, it follows that rascals of Priests should be
nipped in the bud, especially if Politicians are using them in any

Instead of mouthing platitudes, this government needs to clean out its own house, beginning with kicking its Minister of (In)Justice, Wijayadasa as far as a boot can propel him. Champika Ranawaka should be next in line for similar treatment, followed by the rest of the dead wood that hold office for a variety of unacceptable reasons, inclusive of the fact that a parent might have reached prominence in his time.
I could go on and on because it is a fairly long list of fence-jumpers and bribe-takers who should NOT EVER have been given positions of importance and power from which they can continue the depredations they began when they served Mahinda Rajapaksa.
The people have given this lot TWO YEARS in which to clean the Augean Stables and THEY HAVE NOT.
I would guess that many of this lot have bought insurance with Mahinda Rajapaksa and will slip smoothly into his embrace when the time comes (donating some of their ill gotten gains to him?!)
Re-name the UNP. It is not even the Apey Nayange Pakshaya. It is the NATO (No Action Talk Only) of our country and unless they catch up on what they haven’t done for the last two years, they will end up in the dustbin of history, with or without the luxury cars and money they have accumulated since January 2015

Emil van der Poorten ———-I agree with all the issues you have effectively raised. I wonder why you are mum on the permanent state the bureaucracy/civil service. The bureaucracy is supposed to protect the state, responsible for its assets, enforce its laws, serve the many not the few, without fear or favour ……………………………… Is it fit for purpose?

Native Vedda “”The bureaucracy is supposed to protect the state, responsible for its assets, enforce its laws, serve the many not the few, without fear or favour ……………………………… Is it fit for purpose?”” you are talking of ghetto politics. Even at london of today The leader of the council asked the civil servant as to why he had not enforced the law. the response was I have implemented the law as enacted by you which incidentally was exactly the opposite that the leader was now requesting- the leader was an unofficial magistrate too. your tamil god tathi SJVC could do nothing about his son Chandra living with his sinhalese secretary as she was better than any tamil woman- passion rules the world dear old tamil goats reading stories from books as if that is the practice. Stupid Veddo!!

      Native Veddah:
That’s a most appropriate question in the context of what I have said.
I don’t see mass ineptitude in the Swivel Service or whatever it’s called and if there was and the Ministers were doing their jobs, the incompetents should have been gone by now. After all, when it suits their convenience Ministers, backed by the government will visit upon people like Mr. Pilapitya at Wildlife all kinds of grief, compelling them to leave. No government in my memory tolerated ineptitude of their senior minion without either firing them or forcing them to resign. No, this situation is like the fish – it rots from the head.

Emil van der Poorten———–Thanks for your comment however I am not satisfied with it since yours seems to justify corruption, inaptitude, obedience …….and cowardice of the public service. I had known a number of old codgers who served the state more than 35 years and retired in the mid seventies who stood for honesty, never reluctant to have good bust up with their political masters for their honour and stood for the principles and their fellow men in the services. Most of them were promoted on merit didn’t have to beg their political masters. Oh those were pre 1970s days according to my Elders. The weeping widow was blamed for many things the down grading the entire civil service was one of the serious ones.

Please keep an eye on the state functionaries as well. As far as I am concerned they are the first enemies of the people.

Native Vedda you old goats are tamil villagers built on thirukkural I suppose so.””Oh those were pre 1970s days according to my Elders.”” The world has always been ruled by Passion and even Solomon the wise one could do nothing about his son. Like Sivaji the Great Maratha could not stop his son going to the harem and marrying one muslim while he was fighting the islamic conquest of the north and promotion of persian language over hinduism and sanskrit. Before weeping widow bachelor boy Dudley did the same and this was effected at his residence in the middle of the night. So they get the `Varna` and elections in no time.
The ignoble family’s wrong conduct controls the island. The weeping widow changed the constitution to the tune of postman’s son terrorist Nasser of Egypt the architect of closure of Suez Canal. Changed the laws that guide lesser men because she thought she was the noble one from Banda Island where the Arab merchants had their trading agents for nearly 800 years.

Emil van der Poorten, Saudi sponsored spread of primitive, intolerant Wahabi Islam is a fact. You would be naive to dispute that. Sri Lanka is fully exposed to that threat. Take a trip to eastern Sri Lanka, you will see. Terrifying black burqa clad women are mushrooming all over SL at a rate. Not a dress-code practiced by traditional Sri Lankan Muslim women. “Forced muslimization”? No, may be not, but there is no shortage of force, violence and brutality in the name of “Islamic” stupidity. Cheers!

On principle a statement by anyone advocating amity and decrying hate speech and hate crime is welcome. Bravo! Malik. But there is another dimension where one should not be blind of. The UNP is the party in power. By making this statement it also castes aspersions on the Police for its ineffectiveness. Now, we make all enforcing institutions as independent and put the blame on them for ineffectiveness thus trying to escape the responsibility and the wrath of the people. That will never work and the results of it can only be seen at an election. As the party in power its ministers are duty bound to strengthen the capacity of the Police if there are shortcomings, instead of voting themsleves with luxuries. It could be short of logistics. It may need capacity building. The biggest issue can be the paltry pay packet causing all the maladies one can name. I expect the Minister in the picture who provides lot of ideas for the Government can evolve a strategy to strengthen the Police for the betterment of the Nation.

  • 4
    3

“Since its founding, the UNP has remained a secular political party fostering unity while building a truly Sri Lankan identity.”

The attacks on Christians and Muslims are petty compared to what goes on in the rest of the world. The only reason Sri Lanka is still secular is because the majority of the citizens are Buddhists. Buddhism is fundamentally atheist. The prolonged presence of Christianity on the island, introduced and promulgated by foreigners, was partly to blame for a civil war. What will be the result of of a prolonged presence of Islam? It depends on how much power the Muslims are able to wrench from the Government.

    • 3
      2

Aney bang Lester, your propping up Buddhism and calling their attacks on other minorities as petty, is a vain attempt to whitewash them. We know the mayhem and havoc they caused in Myanmar, and the vicious hate speeches and the threats of violence made by our local monks to whom you bend in two and worship. Monk hegemony. Don’t look for scapegoats to blame, like ‘prolonged presence of Christianity,’ and influence of ‘foreigners’ for the civil wars that took place, and question the prolonged presence of Islam in this island nation. Well, the truth is if the Muslims had been proactive in promoting their faith amongst the locals, this country would have been better off as a peaceful Muslim country, like the rest of its neighbors. But they have been passive and keeping it to themselves and did not spread the word. Now it is too little, too late. However, we expect the rate of conversion to Islam to keep improving as time goes by into the future, as is now happening in the rest of world. Your humbug monks who claim celibacy will keep increasing in numbers in more and Temple monasteries to get everything free from Government, while this only helps reduce your population growth. Shortage of men to marry your women will cause excess of women who will eventually marry men of other faiths after conversion. Another cause of concern should be the thriving bars and kassippu dens will make your men impotent and thus leave your women barren. With this type of scenario forecast as your future, don’t blame others for your own failings. These fanatic monks have become a curse to this country. Wake up and smell the coffee.

Police DO NOT want to arrest Gnanasara.
This is evident – they already said that there will be ‘trouble’ if they did.
But, this situation cannot continue forever.
Either Gnanasara must surrender to court or the police chief should resign.

Else, in future, arrest warrants cannot be issued by courts – any criminal can remain hidden/evade arrest in many ways.

We have come to a point when you have to wonder if these racist thugs, if arrested would go on jail through one door, and come out of the back door, when a politician calls and asks the police to release him. How many criminals, including politicians have had some high up use his influence, or even threaten those trying to do their job, and they escape justice?

So Is the government of Sri Lanka saying that be people can NOT be identified based ON:

    1. Ethnicity and/or Sub ethnic caste identity (which has already stopped)
    2. World View
    3. Perhaps next will be geographical region from where you come from……

If you propose there were grievances to the RISE of Tamil Nationalism…then WHY don’t you look at the reason for the rise of Sinhala-Buddhist Nationalism…..

Is the government of Sri Lanka failing the Sinhala-Buddhists…..

WHo are Sri Lankans ??? Sri Lankan is the NOUN that is used by the agencies of GoSL to address the people and to differentiate from let say Indians or Pakistanis or South Africans…

BUT on the ground there are Ethnic and Ethno-religious groups .

BBS activities ARE NOT going to find the solutions REQUIRED and NEEDED by the Sinhala-Buddhists in Sri Lanka.
There HAS TO BE a TRUE Sinhala Buddhist leadership devoid of Ratnas, Champikas, Mahindas this MUST come from the bottom to top and top to bottom
