Well, rights of any kind is a selfish pursuit isn’t it really?

Rights imply “whats in it for me”. From a Buddhist philosophical point of view there is no “I” or “me”. Instead its about “us”.

“Us” encompasse all living beings. When the focus is “us” the pursuit become one of an obligation rather than a right.. The conversation changes to common shared goals. This aligns perfecly with Quantum mechanic concept of consciences belonging to a one field of energy.

Vibushana, did you really mean that “..consciences belongs to..” or ‘consciousness’ “… belongs to one field of energy”?

And isn’t ANYTHING dealing with the individual “selfish”? If so, what is the point you are attempting to make?

“Human Rights: Are Western Thoughts Imposed On Us?” Don’t talk bull shit DJ.

Human rights are universal rights of man formulated from the thesis: “The Rights of Man”, by Thomas Paine, just like the laws nature discovered by Western scientists, such as Newton and others, are universal scientific laws.

Just because you have a degree in political science, don’t mislead people like the lies propagated by the Sri Lankan regime.

Dj, are you trying to concoct some silly arguments to rebut the impending censure of the Sri Lankan state for the genocide of Tamils?

DJ is still working hard and even singing flat for another billet from MARA. He is in need of an ethical bottom line

Not many would turn up there since many are well aware of the man^s stand.

If the title would have been :

on “Lack of Rule of Law and exponentially rising crimes in the country”

Surely many would then attend the lecture – since people are fed up the current situation prevailing in the country.

No Tiru. The sod is trying to become the
leader of the Sri Lanka delegation. Where
there is money and position, DJ the diplomutt
    is there.

So, it is high time Lawyers collective to attend this lecture and talk to this guy directly so that his tight pasted views could go changed. HIs big mistake is not seeing the ground reality of the issues.
How can this man ever be a great analyst ?

I liked his arguments before, but all these weeks, his performance has been very like TOTALLY IGNORANT to people^s problems but in favour of MR thugs.

As I myself read one of the comments added by him not long ago to this CT platform, confirmed me that he would agree with the manner MR rules the country. He had added it so directly. But somehow his views have become inconsistent since he met MARA after that Al Jazeera blamage.

Human Rights is a white thing DJ – forget it.We do not need that. Focus on the Jobs you can get by being an expert in the brown version of it.

He is a good example of a chameleon!!! He can change colour in a jiffy, if it is beneficial for him!!!

Stupid nonsense this, an old debate that Lee Kuan Yew and Mahathir Mohamed stirred up long ago. This dickhead is going to rehearse the same old debate they themselves had given up. Both Singapore and Malaysia see the need for reform. China also will not hold out for long. They want to join with the Western group rather badly, recognising the right to property and giving up notions that were basic to communism. It is stupid fools like Nonis who go around mouthing platitudes of an age long gone by talking about domestic sovereignty. Beggars do not have sovereignty. The country has been going around with begging bowls, like Buddhist monks for long. Now we have another guy wanting peanuts from the organ grinder giving us wisdom about human rights being Western impositions.

Dayan Jayatilleka insists on confirming, over and over again, that he is yet another of the Rajapassa Pandankarayas who are truly without shame. Anything that isn’t in the absolute interests, preferably financial, of his mentors/masters/patrons is either a “western concept” or paid for by the LTTE.
CT should really save those of us with anything resembling a brain from the nonsense of this guy singing – OVER AND OVER AGAIN – for his supper.

    Dr.Dayan Jayatillake,

In USA 50 years ago, they had segregation where Blacks were treated as second class Citizen. But after 40 Years, they installed a Black President. Could you ever think of a Minority becoming a President in Sri Lanka. Since you have extensively travelled abroad, specially to Western countries, don’t you see they have much better HR record than Sri Lanka. Forget about their wars, but in their own countries they do follow HR laws. Please address what happened to 40,000 tamil people that disappeared in 2009, what happened to their land, property and belongings, what happened to the people in weliweriya who asked for drinking water, what happened to all reporters, journalists and human right activists, Heroin, Kasippu and drug business, land grab etc,etc in your “LAW TALK” address.

      Mahela@,
Many would agree with all requests made above, no doubt about that. But you are truly barking on wrong tree. right ? This man DJ has lost his credibility long back now. Every 10 year old would know that HUMAN RIGHTS that the UN louds at are HUMAN RIGHTS that any state should have to safeguard. Can average people seek the justice today in the country ? I spoke to my aged mother yesterday, she said to me, it is becoming dangerous to live in SRILANKA today. She had lately read about an incident in which elderly women are raped in the country today. That is not a single incident, but she further described how crimes have risen up rapidly to this day.

Besides, Jayathialaka’s stands sofar have made very clear, he has often been trying to turn the wording to match their BEUTELSCHEMA (prey).
As you described above, is there any western nations that would not safeguard the essential human rights. Shooting the messenger repeatedly will never help us anyone.

Human rights are a western thought. So
is rule of law, good governance, justice
& equal treatment to minorities and a
    level playing field.

Who is this bum DJ to pontificate on that?
His only motive is to rise up the ladder.
What a sycophant of the R family.

DJ is a hero worshiper for a reason: To fill his pockets and boost his ego. He has expressed on many occasions that there are no other dynamic leaders in Sri Lanka today, other than his beloved emperor Mahinda Rajapakse.

Lawlessness, pliant judiciary, dysfunctional police, white van abductions, torture arbitrary executions of persons in police and army custody, attacks on media and media people, attacks on peaceful demonstrations, atrocities against minorities, attacks and destruction of religious places, denial of freedom of worship and many more atrocities of the regime does not bother this Machiavellian madman.

Does this moron think that the 2600 year old Sri Lankan civilization will continue to flourish under lawless, corrupt and immoral rule of the MaRa junta?

What a warped, dishonest and cruel mind he has: Doesn’t he want the hundreds of thousands of suffering citizens get justice and redress from human rights through the concerns of the UN?

The suit Dr. Dayan wears, the bread Dayan eats and the Bear he drinks are western thoughts. The rule of law, the rule of justice, the rule of democracy, the law of human rights, the fundamentals of equality are also western thoughts. The rule of jungle, politicization of justice system, Sinhalaization of security forces, misuse of powers, Sinhala colonization of Tamil lands, genocide of Tamils, corruption at all levels of administration are the rights of non western thoughts of Sinhala rights. Who imposed these criminal thoughts on us? Let Dayan make a decision on this!

A lot of bollox- excuse the language.
It’s such a pity that the Law Students’ Association has been unable to find better than Dayan Jayatilleka (or preferably, as a Colombo Telegraph reader once emphatically had it, Ducter De Yarn Jaya Tikatika).
This man is a good orator, for sure. He is also an excellent writer. But what he has to say, especially on Sri Lankan politics, is not worth reading or listening to. This is because EVERYTHING

Sorry pressed the wrong button before I was done…

    (ctd from previous comment…)
…he has to say is all spin – it is all said with an ulterior motive of some form of personal gain. And that personal gain is his one and only objective. One of his colleagues at Colombo uni, now on a post abroad, once said to this writer (nearly word to word) ‘I wouldn’t take anything Dayan takes too seriously. He’s a friend of every government. He knows how to convince governments in one way or another to get what he wants to get’
This largely sums up the guy, and he is by no means a reference to talk on this topic. Ambassador Dhanapala, to give but one example, would have been a billion, or a trillion times better.

I am sure this event is sponsored
by US dollars and presented by
Dayan’s pay masters. The love to
go places has replaced logic. The lust
to earn money whilst climbing has
    reduced this bum to zero

Yes. We are being told to stop torture, stop rape, stop murder, stop marginalizing minorities, stop impunity, stop subverting the independence of the judiciary.Yes. We are being told to be civilized.

Of course you and your sinhalese buddhists do not want to be civilized. Just violent corrupt and greedy killers.
