Exclusive: UK Strongly Snubs Sri Lanka Over Visa Requests For Daham Sirisena Whilst President Orders News Blackout

Sri Lanka demanded an explanation from the United Kingdom government why the request of President Maithripala Sirisena’s son Daham and his three friends to travel to UK was subject to long delays. This unusual protest received a right royal snub and a strong telling off from UK officials.

Maithripala-Daham-

President and his son Daham |File photo

This is while President Sirisena, who speaks of press freedom, telephoned newspaper editors and proprietors to request them not to print any news report in this regard. Like the power blackout, there is also news blackout in the Sirisena era that is ordered by him. His explanation was that he was unaware about the son’s matter. The same President Sirisena told a meeting of the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress in Kalmunai this week that there was media freedom in Sri Lanka now and the media could report on anything without fear or favour.

Secretary to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Chitranganee Wagiswara summoned Laura Davies, Deputy UK High Commissioner in Sri Lanka to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to lodge a strong protest on behalf of the government and the President. Davies has been told in strong terms this should not have been done.

Davies has challenged the Sri Lanka government’s claim and emphasised the proper procedures have not been followed. At first, Daham Sirisena’s application together with the ones from his friends have been sent to the British High Commission with only a request note by the Chief of Protocol M.R. Hassen. It was only after they asked for documentation some were forwarded.

The female diplomat has said thereafter Daham’s visa was issued. However, Davies has declared other applications had to be processed in the normal course and revealed something shocking. One applicant had been debarred from entering the United Kingdom five years ago for forwarding false documentation. The British diplomat has said it was not the right of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to demand visas for third parties without proper documentation in keeping with UK laws. The issue of visas were at the sole discretion of the UK government.

In the Ministry of Foreign Affairs where cut throat infighting is the order of the day, the story had been leaked to the media by one faction. On finding this out, Chief of Protocol M.R. Hassen, who worked earlier at the Presidential Secretariat (before becoming protocol chief), had conveyed to President Sirisena that the story embarrassing him and his son was going to appear in all the media. This is why Sirisena made the urgent calls to Sinhala, Tamil and English newspapers.

Chief of Protocol Hassen is identified in the Ministry as the one who has been conveying matters against Foreign Minister Mangala Samaraweera to the Presidential Secretariat. It was he who was responsible for Hotel Taj Samudra giving bills to the Prime Minister of New Zealand and his party who came to Sri Lanka. No proper instructions have been given by him to the hotel and Hassen has been blaming the Prime Minister’s office during meetings with those in the Presidential Secretariat.

One leading Sinhala journalist said there was no difference between former President Mahinda Rajapaksa and present President Maithripala Sirisena. When Sajin de Vass Gunawardena physically assaulted Chris Nonis, Sri Lanka High Commissioner then to UK, it was Rajapaksa who telephoned newspapers in Colombo not to publish the report. The Colombo Telegraph brought this out. Now, it is Sirisena, who is after Rajapaksa’s own children, who is preventing the wrong doings of his son being exposed. “There is no difference between the two sides. In fact President Sirisena is turning out to be much worse,” the journalist said.

Correction: The original version of this story said Chris Nonis, Sri Lanka High Commissioner then to New York.

Poor old Maithri can’t keep his house in order – most particularly his goon of a son, who continues to be a hulking embarrassment to his father and the government.

How dare you to call him poor ? Your god father could not even put the feet in the UK since oxford men attacked him there and on his return in the country too. Good control this way acutally, That shows, rights and sevices are equal to anyone. Today, we have a voice in the UK thanks to MY3 and RW:
Goda meeharakas of your kind will however interpret it in favour of Maharaja.

“Today, we have a voice in the UK thanks to MY3 and RW:”

That is true, and you, too, like many of us are “on Maithri’s side” in the political battles that are being fought out; but I’m afraid that you have misunderstood “Ethologist’s” use of the word of “poor”. He, too, is sympathetic towards Maithri.

However, I think that we are all pretty sick of Daham; more significantly, he is doing immense harm to the country, even to the world, because I see the “Rainbow Revolution” of January 8th 2015, as being of World significance.

        To : Simon Gunasekera.

Yes ! Poor old MY3 can’t keep his house in order and thats a fact seen in the state of your country today. What choice do you have in the UK thanks to MY3 and RW. ?????????????????????????
You have no choice in the UK at all.
You people are ” Goda Meeharakas” and will be and act like that untill your dying day. If you are living in the UK then keep your damn FOUL MOUTH shut and “render unto Ceasar what belongs to Ceasar and to God what belongs to God.”
You Sri Lankans “Yakkos” even after coming to the UK still can’t break free from your Yakko culture and act like civilized humans in a civilized country. If you love your PM and President then pack up your bags and go back in a dignified manner. If you decide to stay and enjoy the benefits of this country ( UK ) then render your loyalty to Queen and Country.
You may fool some idiots some of the time but you cannot, repeat cannot fool all the people all of the time.
This applies to you and to MY3 the poor fool who cannot get his house in order. Same to RW the poofter who also cannot get his house in order.

Simon Gunasekera, if you love your country why did you come to the UK ??????????????????
Because your country Sri Lanka will not give you and your family the same benefits you are getting here in the UK. Is that why ???

There are many good Sri Lankans here who bless this land in prayer, for all that they get and who have publickly addressed their loyalty to Queen ( Her Majesty ) and country ( the Union Jack ).
        Have you done same.!!!!!!!!!
If not, then you better start doing it now before its to late.

In the UK we do not want buffaloes like you, as we have the best breeds of cattle and sure you can see that when you pass the green fields and go into the Butcher’s shop.

If you have a voice then use that voice to praise and preserve Queen and Country the UK.
Leave your poor Lankan politicians alone for they do not belong to the UK. They belong to a lovely, pleasant, sun drenched land of plenty which they themselves do not know the value. All that they know is to rob, cheat, loot, plunder, murder, and God only knows what next.
Finally we do not want your Presidents son coming here for he is a bad egg. Even if he comes here tell the impish brat how to behave and not act like a Buffalo in a china shop ( Meerharaka ) like they call in your country.
SG, decide where your loyalties lie, either to the Lion flag or the Union Jack. Choose wisely and carefully.

GOD BLESS THE QUEEN & COUNTRY.

Simon G – apparently you have missed the point by more than a mile!

First, let me emphasize that I have the strongest distaste and disapproval for MR. And the sooner he and his family and cronies are charged, arrested and punished if found guilty, the better for us all!

Your assumption is therefore completely haywire to begin with.

Unfortunately you seem to be one of those who can’t see the forest for the trees and are prepared to excuse bad behaviour and stupid actions to be permissible when someone you like is guilty of these deeds.

This alone, speaks volumes not only for your mentality, but also for your stupidity.

By the way “poor” was used in the metaphorical sense (in case you didn’t ‘get it’)!

        Now who is the “meeharaka”???!!!

Aiyo Sirisena should take lessons from his former boss CBK about how to bring up responsible, decent and level-headed children – particularly to move in Colombo society circles. CBK saw to it both her children did what good children are expected to do – complete their studies satisfactorily. Her two children did not frequent night clubs, brothels and dance halls in the night – which is godayata magic for some of these twisted children of the new political class – from the hinterland. From the looks of it, this young country pumpkin will continue to bring trouble to his father from time to time. This is all the more reason Papa takes steps to properly and quickly leash this un-Daham son.

This is absolutely – defarmatory. You colombians like or not he is the one who drove away Medamulana Donkey who has no idea today about how he should have eaten all the billions by not having any kind proper management. But people have to bear the burden for his extra vaganza life styles. Anyways, Mr, even today is no late if you could please correct you – looking back you need learn to respect the president of the nation. No matter he came from colombo circles or far away from colombo. There is no leader in the country today, who would focus all the areas when holding speeches – locally or internationally. This is very clear to EU- that is why they have been thinkin to help MY3 s governance in the country. You guys know nothing but behave as royals just because you come from Colombo. For europeans colombo is an another Calcutta where armut/poverty is seen in every corners. We need to know who we are.. that is the basics.

All very true about CBK’s children.
Mrs B was very careful, but Anura got a little out of hand, after studies though.
Mr B never let members of either family get anywhere near his official business.

That is because CBK’s kids have class. Class inherited from their grandmother and rest of the family and also because CBK made sure they never misbehaved. Daham is suffering from a terrible inferiority complex because of his father’s native sinhala background. Westernized living is natural to the aristocrats but new to My3. RW on the other hand cannot have children but his family is also blue blooded Colombo 7 aristocrats. Even though his brother Shan was engaged in throwing his weight around and getting visas at the US embassy for people in a shady manner from 1977-94, the siblings and nephews etc had class and know how to behave. The sad problem with My3’s son, SB’s sons, Mervyn;s thug kudu son etc are that they are all products of the yakkos or the inferior village class of sinhala speaking gamaraalas. These gamaraalas let power and wealth go to their heads.

Honestly if My3 was that honest as a minister, how did his son get to go to Uni in England? Now the daughter is grabbing advertising contracts including the SLC contracgt to send off the SL Cricket team. How and why does this happen ? It all became the standard operational procedure under MR for everyone. He allowed everyone and anyone doing his Kingly bidding to ROB and make money any which way possible. He made it corporate policy for ministers, and all appointees to become rich including his relatives and people loyal to him appointed to so many places like Aviation, Ports, or whatever authority.

So when Daham does this sort of thing or harasses women on the beach, it is not something he things as wrong because his IQ and his mental makeup does not say it is wrong. So there is no cure for that sort of behavior. CBK’s kids are highly educated and have class. These fellows and MR’s kids lacked the class but even MR’s kids would not do what this guy did at the Royal Thomian. So this is all MR’s new corporate steal all political culture and its hangover.

Sometimes it is the luck of the draw with children. CBK’s children compared to Sirisena’s are from another era. CBK was born 6 years before Sirisena, and 6 years is a long time in this digital age. Parents have less and less control and influence on children these days.
Agree that Sirisena should “try” to control his offspring. But doubt if he can cut them off as he did with a brother.
I take issue with calling Sirisena a country bumpkin, gamarala etc.
Why is there no dignity of labour in this country?
How many Sri Lankans do we know, who have gone to “good” schools but have not touched a book since leaving school, and relying on mass media for their information? Going to “good schools” or being born into “good” families do not matter. If we go back in time, all our forefathers were running behind animals with a stick or a stone in loincloths. Who can deny that?

We are fools, if we expect integrity, commitment and hardwork from politicians, especially from Sri Lankan politicians. Here those politicians get rich, help their family members and friends, but make people suffer. What they have achieved significantly since the independence? Certainly, they made people to suffer through the brutal war.

At least he is not a criminal killer unlike Karuna who was given a New Visa and a New Name? Does anybody know the story behind this?

Anyway, Daham likes to go places, and his father will get him visas to go places. May be his father wants him out of the country, ans stop crashing into parties.

Amarasiri still wants him to fish in the vast Indian Ocean, and make the Fish go places, as the Indians are doing now.

You may be right. But why to go against his son so exageratingly ? Was that not that Medmulana Offsprings behaved all wild running night car races sending the message across that the youth of this country should behave that way?
All the way along the Medamulana meeharaka tresspassed all legal borders deliberately made lanken youth that sick. A culture that the nation was not aware was introduced. No laws or the near to them were the case, consequently, youth have been caught by drug mafia. Not only medamulana offsprings but also the offsprings of other minsiters too contributed. I am not defeding Presidents son, if he has been that abusive, we have to go against him too, but I really dont think except for one or 2 incidents in the past, the boy hs not behaved the way Meeharak offsprings from Medamulana did. So please making comparision that way is somewhat unfair i would say.

I think Daham’s antiques should be exposed. Only then that boy will get himself sorted out. At present he is behaving as if he is a juvenile rather than a mature adult. I think this is because his dad is always not around to give him a good box around his ears, so he is using dad’s absence to his juvenile advantage. I say, journos, go ahead and publish your stories or fabrications whatever, until the kid becomes mature.

So, the new ‘crown prince’ is persona non grata in the United Kingdom.
Tales of his criminal and anti social behaviour appear to have travelled far and wide.

A UK Visa application demands accurate credible reasons for travel to UK, source and amount of funds to sustain oneself there, an address where the applicant will stay, name(s) of contacts in UK, and proof of intention to return at the end of the visa period, apart from other queries at an interview with British consular officials.
This is the usual protocol to decide to grant a visa.

This information in whole or part, appears not to have been given.

Whatever the current commotion is, you seem to be unaware of the gross incompetence of the British immigration when they subjected women to virginity tests at the arrival point of entry to Britain. They are notorious for harassing visa applicants because of their own incompetence. This is not dissimilar to the political interference on issues they know nothing about. President Sirisena! The truant Daham will continue to make headlines now and then – for the wrong reasons embarrassing his besieged father and the country. It is time he learnt popular respect cannot be forced or purchased. It has to be earned. His father being President in no way brings him any special status or immunity.

He also appears to be surrounded by a group of irresponsible youngsters – his “friends” These fellows look unsophisticated and shifty country ruffians. How is that this perali son and his rowdy friends are provided for State security – vehicles and personnel at the people’s expense. ‘…If it is indeed spoiled political brat syndrome, please take his dad to aside and have a serious word or two with him….’

And the problem with the solution is this; none who has the ear of the MS or his poor wife is willing to call a spade a spade ie tell Dad and Mum straight that Daham (in particularly) is a pain in the neck and should be reigned in. I am afraid it is too late anyway because the boy was already infected from Dad’s ministerial days with the inevitable ‘spoiled political brat syndrome'(so prevalent with those of many of our political offspring.

To late now to put the little bugger across the knee and give him a few sobering whacks with the cane. Daham is a yoik and a coward, and like all of the breed he has developed a small pack of good-for-nothing-bastards who have the time on their hands to go looking for trouble.

If only he had brains, he could have been given a worthwhile job.

He wants to take his supporting cast to the UK. I do hope the British keep an eye on the shit – just for our sake. Because if he and friends behave badly it will leave a bad smell for all of us.

Yakko land has a long way to go singing cricket songs and unable to find a place at rugby 6 nations. It is the diabolical politics of the Sinhala Nationalist- cant do wont do that has caused that state.
Nothing comes for free and India is learning that high technology is very expensive and elusive.

The Germans are installing Robots into Chinese industry to make it high tech and competitive and yet the Chinese have almost a 400 million unemployed. (same scenario before WW2)

How can you go away from lingua franca that even the Indian’s (same number of them speak English worldwide 503 million) are unable to and the best they have found is faulty (Raphael fighter jets) France?

Japan was a reclusive nation even before the European New World and stayed that way.
We are what we eat and are dictated by our exports which are geared to the west from colonial days to today because of best prices.

Gamarala should’nt worry. If Ranil can send his relation as H.C to UK,
Gamarala can easily send his brat as Deputy Hc to uk. After all his brother
with no training or experience is Chairman of SL Telephone. Arjuna Ranatunga’s brother with the least education is the Chairman of Port authority. Nepotism is part and partial requirement of Yapalana. S/L still
sleeps in the same bed only the sheets have changed.

      Man get a life.

He as gamarala has achieved lot to this date. While Meeharaka failed in all ways just his gonibilla making tactics chilled you the stupid folks.

Where is his Electric chair waiting for execution today ?

Gamararala et al has let that disappeared by their pragmatic politics.

You guys just make bla bla not kwnowing the least about the ground realities. Even lanken paddy field meeharakas would grasp it but you guys not yet.

Agree with you, Sama, that Maithri is worthy of respect.

However, it is also possible that Daham, for whom even I was making excuses until long after the U.N. episode, could well be the undoing of his good father. The same has to be said of Maithri’s brothers.

And then there are Maithri’s worst enemies: NOT the dirty Rajapaksas, but the sycophants and toadies who will always gather around the top man in the country.

Ranatunge becoming Chairman is 1000 time better than Nishantha Wickramasinghe even without O/L ruining the national Carrier. Education is something but Ranatunge may at least have common sense to run an institute unlike Nishantha who did not know head or tail what an organization means..hence one of the reasons we suffered gigantic losses

The biggest problem in foreign ministry created by a middle age woman official who was Sajins Vaas Gunawardenes supporter. Her brother is a Gotabaya supporter working still in defence ministry. Now this woman has become a strong in new government and harassing other officers and not allow even secretary to work. This woman still carrying news secretly to Rajapaksa with support of her lover who works in Washington Sri Lanka ambassy

U.K. High commission would have had a second thought before issuing the Visa for the 1st son,of the country, fearing that he might get to British Parliament and sit next to PM Cameron, like what he did at the UN session and the Royal college stage, where the PM too was present.

I pity the President and the 1st lady as the children are causing
problems for them, but minor, unlike the former ‘royal’ brats . One, forcefully presiding all the meetings around Pollanaruwa, the future capital of Sri Lanka and the second, no one knows as to what he is about and he throws the weight around saying he is the son of the President, wherever he steps in. One consolation is that the simple parents do not encourage their children to engage in political thuggery, nepotism and of all corruption, unlike the former.

Who is Daham Sirisena? He is the Son of Sri Lanka President. But bear in mind he is not a part of govt just because of he is the son of President. Secondly Daham was on a private tour and not touring to UK as a Govt official and no way for the govt to summon the Deputy High Commissioner which is bloody shame for our country.

Well I can say if anyone getting any delays on your Visa then please contact the President office and they will summon the diplomat for delays!!

On what basis this Sri Lanka Government giving more priority to the son of Sri Lanka President? I am searching heavily from the rule book!!!

Winning an election with a load of promises is the easy part. Maintaining those promises as a gentleman is another story. Count the number of broken promises and it will will clearly visible that nothing much has changed since the change of government. What is disgraceful is to note that neither the government politicians nor their supporters showing any signs of embarrassment. Got luck to all of those who believed in a change.

The last first family has screwed it up for the current as well as all future first families UK wont be the last country that delays or denies visa for SL politicians and their brats.
    This should not surprise anyone.

I think Sirisena’s children have inferior complex. They are trying to understand the behaviour of children of any Head of the States. Immediate examples are the Mara’s children. But these guys are not so bad and trying to figure out the best. Unfortunately some idiots of their circles misguide them. Growing up in rural background further make them difficult to understand the variety of current trends of modern youth. While sympathising them keep these thing in the light.

as the saying goes..you can take the cat out of the jungle.but you can’t take the jungle out of the cat
One only has to take a look at the country bumpkin or pumpkin of the sirisenas, rajapaksas and many others to see how true this is..
Problem is these village kids got a major inferiority complex, and try to prove themselves,to be at the same level as the CBK,Jayawardene,Kotalawela or PM Daniel kids….no way maan, this is where good breeding kicks in..it’s all in the DNA…

If the CT story is true about, summoning the deputy High commissioner
for UK to Foreign ministry to explain the delay in issuing a visitor visa to UK, for an unofficial visit, we have offended a great country.

FM Mangala Samaraweera, who has done a great job in getting around many countries, who were against us during the previous regime, into our fold, will have a time explaining to the same IC members, about
the undiplomatic approach made to UK High. comm. on this visa issue
    by his own ministry.

If I were in the same position of FM Mangala, I will send the same
secretary, who summoned the UK deputy high comm.to the ministry,to
the office of the UK high comm. to apologise for the unethical questioning of the high comm. official . It is still difficult to believe that the President was in the know of all what transpired
and had a hand in this matter.

Giving Sri Lankan kids dads that work in politics appear to be the same as giving a monkey a cut throat razor; they will just use it willy-nilly, ignorant to the negative impact that they create whenever they abuse their privileges. Why is it that Sri Lankan youth stand out as the worst of spoilt-brats?

Few things to note here. The economic disparity means anyone including son of president will be considered a potential refugee seeker. There are so many former HC employees ended up seeking political asylum there.

Secondly their systems are thorough after Tamils in particular finding refugee loopholes to enter that country. I think Tamils feel like they are “Scottish” who must live there for some odd reason. I am digging into this area to find out more at the moment.

Thirdly, there is an expectation perhaps being a good chap from Royal who mimic the British gentry they will be treated with high regard.

That is hardly the case. Most of the British themselves do not like to mimic the British gentry. It used to be cool and hip at one stage. That is no longer the case. Now its considered a phony and wasteful pastime.

This is terrible.parakramabahu must be turning over in his grave. In his reign it would be unthinkable that rajarata would be so humiliated.I suppose everything changes over time.Today it will be so easy for even srilanka to reject the visa of a roman. When we were trading with rome at that time if we had refused entry to a roman we would have ended up as part of the roman empire.

Reading the news headline of yet another escapade of Daham made me come to the conclusion that this is yet another incident in the world of Politics and the Political culture .. ..Many a political leader in the world of today , even NGO officials have sought priviledge at these entry points visa offices or Airports , .sometimes the rules are lifted just to accommodate a political leader that could be of use for reference later or diplomacy or what ever . ..But the UK visa office is abiding by the rules so it helps all to expect no queue jumping .I commend the principle ..Some of the expatriates have adopted an holier than thou attitude but my experience at the Airport has been different where certain queue jumping takes place for the priviledged with certain arrogance too..I wonder why the people who insult the President call him a Gama rala .according to Codrington a gama rala was an esteem position in an agricultural economy and it was a responsible position with priviledge of course , requiring wit and wisdom .May be urbanites have read too many folk tales that relate with humour the legendary moda gamarala the comment only tell us about the commentator .,This is a good news item for the day .and it will blow away ..like the story of a high dignitary of a country who was asked to remove his shoes at an entry point was angry which we lesser mortals can handle better !

“…this is yet another incident …”

Too much of ‘yet another’ can make the father ‘yet another’ politician.
Much of the irritation is because people expected better.

Honest criticism cannot hurt a good government, in fact can only do good. Biased defence is one of the worst enemies of a good government.

UK high commission shift their visa section to Chennai because of one politician. They are very strict on false documentation. When someone caught he will not get visa again.
If our foreign secretary demands visa for defaulter that is a big mistake
Better to send an apology to UK govt as early as possible

When they tighten rules average people will find it difficult to get visa
I remember French embassy in Colombo closed their visa office for two weeks around 1993 when Diplomat was harassed by security forces
PLEASE DO NOT REPEAT MISTAKES DONE IN PAST
