Finance Minister’s SIL Rosie Responds To Nepotism Charge

Finance Minister Ravi Karunanayake‘s sister in law Rosie Malasekara confirmed the alleged nepotism charges leveled against her husband Gihan Malalasekara and his exposed attempt of securing the Sri Lankan Airlines Sales Manager (UK) post by Colombo Telegraph earlier today, when she posted an explanatory comment under the website’s story and also on her Facebook page.

Rosie Malalasekera Gihan MalalasekeraResponding to Colombo Telegraph’s expose, Rosie Malalasekara drew more flak than sympathy from other Colombo Telegraph commentators when she posted reasons as to why the airline should appoint her husband to the role.

Her more emotional posting on her Facebook wall citing the multi talents of her hubby as a husband, father, sportsman and a human being received her desired results.

“she should never have taken matters to her own hands and made such comments in response to the said article on social media. This will now certainly have a direct impact on the eventual selection criteria when the senior management has to decide on the final candidate. Her comment has now had a direct influence on the overall selection criteria and is a conflict of interest now. We do have a media spokesman for the airline and any responses should have come from him and not Mrs. Malalasekara who is not an employee of the airline” a very senior manager of the airline who was disappointed by Rosie Malalasekara’s comment told Colombo Telegraph on the condition of anonymity.

The criticism against nepotism under the Sirisena-Wickremesinghe government took off when President Sirisena appointed his brother P.G. Kumarasinghe to the post of Chairman Sri Lanka Telecom as soon as he was voted as the head of state earlier in Janaury.

However the acceleration of criticism against nepotism under the current yahapalanaya government took off when President Maithripala Sirisena got his son Daham Sirisena to accompany the national delegation to the United States of America to attend the United Nations General Assembly.

In between these happenings the President’s daughter Chathurika Sirisena got government officials and police officers to accompany her to villages in the Pollanaruwa District.

The President so far failed to issue a statement or apologize regarding these issues.

The national carrier then tagged along with President Sirisena’s lead when it went on to appoint Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe’s close ally Charitha Ratwatte’s brother Capt. Suren Ratwatte to the post of Chief Executive Officer, a post the pilot never held before.

Minister Karunanayake’s ‘family affair appointment’ was first highlighted when his brother in law and retired policeman T.M. Bangsa Jayah was appointed to the post of Managing Director of the country’s biggest Insurance Company, Sri Lanka Insurance.

Now even Minister of Ports Arjuna Ranatunga is also shortly set to appoint his brother Dhammika Ranatunga to the post of Chairman Ports Authority in his Ministry.

Where did CT dig that picture up from?

As for Ravi and his antics, well it comes as no surprise given past allegations against him going back to the early 2000s when he was minister.

Due apologies for the comment. Your message of Defence needs editing and good English grammar…specially when you need the people reading to be positive and making good impressions about your husband …post-designate has to display that you both are not Godayas like some of our politicians or persons with low life reputations like some politicians who could be your relatives.

I think the airline should appoint Rosie to the post instead of her hubby. She may do a better job than him. He looks too ‘cool for school’ in the picture and she looks to be the driving force. Perhaps she emphasizes the saying “behind the success of every man is a woman” extremely very well.

To the story above Finance minister’s SIL,
CT please get the relationship in order. This Rosie with the mouth is sister of Ravi? Then her husband Gehan Malalasekera should be Ravi’s BIL.

She knows jolly well that Nepotism is a curse to ones career including her brother’s career.
Hope the present government would steer clear from this. First it was MS then RW and it goes on.

People you have power and freedom to expose these crooked politicians.
Next will be this character will be made the HC in the UK.

Thanks to CT for letting public know the true colours of the current government. Well done. Pepole had enough of nepotism, this has been going on since independent. All need to come together put end to the nepotism. This is affecting under privilege in our society. Privileged and influencel pepole are getting away with muder. It would be good if RW and MS let public know on what merit the said person was selected and how many other pepole applied for that roll, their qualifications, experience, their residential status, the recurement policy and why they were not suitable for the roll. This government must come clean and stop fooling pepole.

Allow me to take an alternate view.

The applicant appears to have the credentials to apply for the job.

The fact that he is Ravi K’s BIL shouldn’t dismiss his appointment for the post. In that case, anyone closer to any Govt can’t be appointed to any role.

Let the appointment be on Merit.

As for the applicant’s wife sharing her thoughts in response to questions raised, with her friends, this is a private affair between them. We can understand, when everyone snickering behind their backs, it’s only human to clarify the situation.

Let the best person get hired.

    Thanks for reading.

I am Reposting this for the Benefit of those you who are reading this Article:

Hi Rosie and Gihan. First and foremost let me Congratulate Gihan on his appointment as the article says. I have been in 4 Frontline Airlines who have been among the Best in the World and can proudly boast of a career of 32 Years in Major Airlines.
I have known Gihan from the time he joined the then Air Lanka as a Trainee Cabin Crew Member. I have watched him with pride to see him blossoming to what he is today. Needless to say the many sacrifices he has made in his career.
Comparing to the those working in the main frontline Airlines that I have worked I would like to assure those who are criticizing his appointment that Gihan’s Capability, Enthusiasm and his motivation is not second to anyone working in the Airline business today.
May I ask those who are so Zealous of his position as to why he has to be overlooked just because his BIL is the Minister of Finance? Your fears and thought I am sure will come to rest when Gihan takes over his position and is able to prove to you all his capability. With regards to the Appointment of the CEO of the Company.. Capt. Suren Ratwatte is a Batch mate of mine and I assure you he will deliver what is expected of him.
To All the detractors let me take this opportunity to tell all of you that You DONT need QUALIFIED people to hold POSITIONS. All you need are CAPABLE people who are Honest and DEDICATED.
Over the Years we did have many qualified people holding positions in the Airline who were neither effective nor capable of doing what was expected of them.
So please my Dear Friends Please allow those who want to do a job of work to do their part in the BEST INTEREST of the Airline and the Country WITOUT having PETTY THOUGHTS.

      Mohd Ramzi Raheem

Is Gihan the only person capable of holding the fort?

“So please my Dear Friends Please allow those who want to do a job of work to do their part in the BEST INTEREST of the Airline and the Country WITOUT having PETTY THOUGHTS. “

We all want to see the most capable pperson running the state owned airline. However we also want to see a proper selection process in place which can rigorously test the potential candidates whoever it is, fit for the job.

Please note the Airline is not Ravi’s inherited investment from his great grandfathe.

By the way what is in it for you?

NV is correct. Use a computer, input the qualifications and experience of everybody who applies for the post. Then select the best 3 persons that the computer points out. Interview only them and select the best and give the job. Mother Lanka will be happy then.

Ravi has a bad record. He is kept in the Cabinet by the PM.He has Kudu reputation and insider trading R.Rajaratnam’s influence too. As NV says, who is Ravi to do what he wants to do. President Sirisena hates Ravi because of his background with many frauds attached to his tainted records..a man street smart and lives or survives because of his guts and wits only …no charisma, popularity or any decent or good impression! Only a …class Royalist who sells the name of a reputed school to his advantage always. Is it true that he feeds Royalist Orgns to get good words mentioned of himself?

ravi, has invited indian pakistani, lankan `blood money` as deposits from the Swiss account holders who are asked to withdraw their interest paying deposits
(because they are undeclared to tax in native country) to central bank for future money laundering (saying he wants to mimic governor of reserve bank india)
he is mafiaso who would go beyond kudu duminda and former kudu PM.
Even the HSBC which is not a British bank (but masquerades as one) has got a canning in the US plus UK has twisted its arm and would prefer for it to go back to China because the Chinese Governtment have been invited to build a nuclear reactor.

Oh come on, Ken; I am also polite and honest in my job. Is that enough? It may well be that this chap is the best guy for the job — but in fairness, just as in justice, stuff not only need to be done but also be seen to be done. Not getting rid of Mahendran, appointing brother in law and taking the putha on the trip to UN are wrong. These are entrenched old habits in our system that need to be got rid of. Sadly, it takes time.

Please Google the meaning of conflict of interest. Capability is not the only skill to be consider for offering a managerial post. Need to be consider more skills plus academic/professional qualifications However if the appointment go against conflict of interest It is against the good governance principles

Well if you are not aware Mr Raheem that is what we have always done in Sri Lanka so much so we now even have Ministers who are not qualified to be Ministers (those who lost at the elections and who are better qualified to be kudumudalalis or ethanol merchents).

So please my dear friend please keep your purile opinions to your good self.

      Mr.Raheem,

Ure two daughters swim champs are CAPABLE in swimming. Why seek a QUALIFIED coach overseas for training? Is only CAPABILITY not good enough to QUALIFY for the Olympic gold event.

QUALITY is measurable, quantifiable, tangible CAPABILITY is immeasurable, living in the moment, its all about passion guided by too many variables cannot be controlled over long time. Tell me how do u measure CAPABILITY? Have any positions held by Mr. Gihan or U faced a decision making situation that measured the financial outcomes of a target-driven action that resulted in a positive gain to the company. As for u Mr.Raheem i know ure targets are safety, punctuality and such are not financial targets but they do contribute as factors, but need to followed as rules and cannot be manipulated.

Mrs. Malasekera canvassing is IRRATIONAL, she lacks knowledge about airline industry and she jumped the gun unethically.

What is Mr.Gihan going to do as Sales Manager if EU bans Sri lanka Airlines from Euro airspace, i am pretty sure he will say i cant do anything about it when Sales are negative while his feet up on the table with a whisky smile on his face. Mr.Gihan is old school mundane people person as per description stated in Rosie Nonas comment. Sales u need PLUS-ExTRA-ordinary qualification factor.

WE NEED Phds, BSc, MSc, Diploma holders but we need QUALIFIED trainers as well to teach the BEHAVIOUR OF THIS VOLATILE BUSINESS WORLD OF AIRLINES too. My vote to MR.Gihan advisors and to u Mr.Raheem advice THUMBS DOWN. :P

Meanwhile MR.Ravi K is a QUALIFIED Charted Accountant so for him the job Sales is ideal, he can manipulate and take decisions on certain actions and figures and may minimise negative impact from any negative situation. WINK WINK. So Rosie akka is hitting the wrong dog with wrong pole.

      Lakshman,
You are very old fashioned and narrow minded and acting like a Gamarala, or typical Godaya.Go to the Western countries and study how Harvard, Yale graduates w/o favoritisms and with proper wetting are appointed to posts.
SRILANKAN is a National AIRLINE Treasure. We do not appoint people to State positions in the way D.S.Senanayake gave posts to people like his own son Dudley, nephew(Aiya FR ge Nonage Akka Alice Attygala- Kothalawalage …padam nokarapu, mole nathi eyage thaththa wage chandi edithara Katawachala & katahakara Putha)John Lionel Kothalawala et al. Read the book JRJ of SRI LANKA by WRIGGINS & DESILVA for more nepotisms and those who stooged the P.M.The irony of it is that the writers also PUJAFY the wrongdoing-Ceylon- politicians.
Those must be posts for international applicants, if you want our AIRLINE to be 6the best in the world.

Please do not listen to those people who try to run the orgns and the country like private property. THAT IS WHY SOME PRAISE THE JVP CRITICS…some day that 1989 JVP ABUSE FAME MIGHT COME BACK owing to those abuses of MAHENDRAN of CENTRAL BANK GOVERNOR FAME AND FRAUDS & NEPOTISM FAME RAVI K. . Another CULPRIT IS CHAMPIKA RANAWAKA who wants to be the EXTREMIST SINHALA BUDDHIST LIKE THE DESTROYER ” PURINDADA” who wants to be the next PRESIDENT OF POOR MOTHER SL.

    There you go…

He is a Royalist.Has produced a Lawyer and a Doctor , both in England I guess,

He has never been on the dole which is important, considering how hard theses days to get a job in the West.

Rosie’s hubby seems certainly multi skilled, the way he is resting them on that Lounge Chair which must have been imported from Srilanka.

Those strawberry cocktails must have really calmed him down to allow Rosie to answer his Mobile.

First I thought this was taken in Bloemandhal where Galleon uses his Multi skills to the max to give the Yahapalana suckers, a decent bang for their buck.

    How wrong I was.

Then again I wouldn’t know how our Royal Boys and their Families live in Bloemendhal or Brighton , unless I see a photo like this every now and then.

If Gihan is SOOO GOOD, why does he want to work for Sri Lanka Airlines, instead of somewhere else?

Simple – he cannot compete with better applicants.

    • 4
      10

Gihan’s worked at Sri Lankan for over 20 years, he is generally well respected through out the airline and actually cares about the customers unlike most of the UL staff in london.
I know for a fact (because I have worked with him) that he enjoys working for Sri Lankan and why would he want to leave a company he enjoys working for?
It’s a shame that because he is related to Ravi (who is a questionable character) that he has been tainted with the same brush.

What must be remembered is that the VOTERS need to build-up confidence in the new band of politicians who have promised a new era and a new nation. These episodes will not endear the My3/RW “yahapalanaya” to us, the voters. PLEASE BE OPEN IN EVERY AREA. You have asked Sri Lankans with foreign accounts to bring these funds to Sri Lanka. There are talks of new high-speed train from the Airport to Colombo. This is the first we heard of this humongous project. There were so many other expensive projects being suddenly foisted on us. You have asked the Sri Lankan voters to be patient for a while longer. But you are not setting the best example and if you carry on like this, a wave will wash you away, and us along with it.

Read many comments and I do respect each and every one of your thoughts. Here is my thoughts about Gihan. As a former cabin crew member, I have worked with Gihan for a while. During my time at Air Lanka, Gihan was working as a Leading Steward.I have worked with Gihan’s leadership. He is a very honest man. He has commendable leadership qualities and has all great characteristics of a great leader who live by virtues . He has worked very faithfully to Sri Lankan Air Lines for over twenty years. During his time in the airline he worked in many departments. In my opinion, it is a great experience an individual will benefit to work in many departments. That experience is priceless!

By all means he must be the most qualified candidate for that position with that many years of experience. No matter what educational qualifications you may have or not have, the truth is if you do not have that practical knowledge then you can not perform a job.
Unfortunately, Gihan’s name has got involved with politics. His entire family is being penalized because of one family member who is an active political member.
Everyone has the right to apply for a job. It is upto the selection committee to make a decision to offer the job to the most suitable candidate. None of us have the right to judge a person because of his political relative. I am sure if this position is not offered to Gihan, he will continue to move on with his current position.
Visiting his wife’s facebook account and cowardly sneaking her private pictures and writing articles without the author’s name is not acceptable.
It is easy to laugh, insult and write insulting comments. It would be much respectable to find that path to acknowledge that person’s service and reward him what is due. Once again, if he is the right candidate then let it be so..
Many crew members left the airline to join other airlines for better prospects, but not Gihan.. because he love our National Carrier and wanted to continue his service to our air line. I have no doubt that Gihan would have got multiple offers from many air lines but his decision to stay with Air Lanka during good and bad times is admirable. He does not deserve insulting comments like this. I am sure the London Station Manager will pick the best candidate for this job.

Despite any ones family connections, every person has the right to apply for any job posting. It is up to the authorities to get the correct person for the correct job.

  • 5

This whole episode stinks. Appointments to the national airline must be made by a recruitment committee of Sri Lankan airlines, not by the minister. Ministerial influence in appointments has been the bane of corrupt political practices and should be stopped immediately. Ministers should not be allowed to interfere in the running of any institution. This right rests with the board of directors of the institution, not with the minister. RW started the ball rolling by appointing a classmate and ex Royal college guy to the post of CEO of Sri Lankan airlines. The position was not even advertised to get the best and most qualified person into the job. The airline desperately needs a top class experienced CEO with proven results to deliver a good outcome for the airline. Instead we have the situation where a brother of Charitha Ratwatte is appointed, never been a CEO previously, not because he is qualified but because of connections. MS too is guilty of nepotism and so will Arjuna who was acting like he was a champion of good governance. These politicians are really not interested in the country, but have a narrow and selfish purpose in that they want to ensure that their family members will be looked after. Just look at the number of recycled, crooks and brain dead people who have been appointed as advisors to the President and PM. These appointments were all made on the basis of personal friendships and expected loyalty for granting the appointments!!!! A form of insidious bribery for a better word. Civil society must continue to monitor these suspect appointments and keep the exposures going. Good job CT in bringing these crooked practices to our notice. We will not allow these crooks to continue to rob us. The past experience with the deposed king has raised our knowledge and understanding and we will demonstrate our displeasure and disappointment with the prevailing good governance philosophy which are merely words with no intent whatsoever for implementation.

appointing qualified individuals for a job should not ring alarm bells. We all like to have people whom we can trust. I think this lady makes a very reasonable statement. At least on the surface he seems qualified for the job. Is Colombo telegraph just publishing and sensationalizing issues with their new found freedom. After being supressed for 10 long years Sri Lankans are criticizing everything they see. This is completely counter productive. Keep up the pressure on the big fish who apparently stole billions ! Avangard, monies given by the pharmaceutical industry and the tobacco company and even the more recent bond scandal .

    Hey guys,

why do you think it’s important for people to be canvassing for others on a public forum, for a govt job ?
Isn’t THAT what we all fought against a few months ago ? So aren’t we all then steeped in this nepotism business?
Just allow all those who consider themselves to be good enough for the job to apply and showcase their abilities to the panel of selectors ! His old buddies of decades ago suddenly speaking of his good qualities is of little importance here, right ?

So my question is, if a guy is confident enough that he is good for the job, why change the job specifications to suit ONLY HIMSELF?

Tells me a story here …

SO SHALL WE STOP THIS CRAP AND LET THE PROCESS TAKE PLACE ?

    Dear Goraka..

I see you have a mentality of a “Frog in the Well”..

All that our colleagues in Sri Lanka are used to is what goes on in Sri Lanka and they are totally ignorant to how things happen outside in the international arena.

Our Airline is no second to any international outfit. I have seen it prosper and deteriorate under many Managements and Circumstances.

The Airline did best under the people who had experience in doing things the right way NOT under the people who were qualified to hold positions just because they had a Degree or a Phd or an Accounting Qualification.

Common on my friend Dont have the mentality of “Crabs in a Basket” when one tries to pull down the other who is capable of climbing up and able to do some work.

Moreover I dont see anything wrong in Gihan wanting to rejoin the Airline. On the contrary without publishing all this crap we should welcome him with open arms and pick his brains with his experience to do what is BEST for the AIRLINE and the COUNTRY.

No wonder our little country is at what it is today. Its solely because of people like you with a one track mind.

You can call this Nepotism as the whole can of worms opened according to the original publication IF and ONLY IF the people who are appointed to posts are incapable of doing their jobs. Otherwise its NOT.

Just because some person is related to a High Official and is appointed to a post to do a job of work he is capable of you cannot hold it against him.

So please my friend think twice. Dont Argue just for the sake of doing so. Get off your Petty Mentality..

    Thanks..

      Mr. Raheem,

Despite your attempt to attempt to paint me as “Frog in the Well”, let me admit I left Sri Lanka 30 years ago, got an Accouting Degree, and work with a pretty good organisation.

This hardly will qualify me to be called “Frog in the Well”.

Ask the question, what made Sri Lanka Airlines go from a very good company to a heap of crap?

Answer – It’s people like you who rather put up or support nepotism when it suits you.

You’ll expect a Pilot or a Surgeon to be well trained or qualified before you let them handle a plane or a patient. But, by some form of twisted logic you don’t mind letting someone get a job to be a Sales Manager because we cannot find anyone more qualified. GIVE ME A BREAK!

        Mohomad Ramzi Raheem

When you were a Senior Pilot Captain Airline had seen how you managed to get favors from certain individuals and given placements , specially when recruiting Cadet Pilots way back in 1990s during the Tris star days and Airbus days, then you left for SQ but still you influenced Management Pilots at UL and backed up certain Cadet Pilots because their Fathers, Moms are known to you. SO Mate before accusing others on Merritt go in front of the Mirror and take a good look at your self.

      Mohd Raheem,

      You are wrong again.

Sri Lankan Airlines never prospered under any management. It has always run at a loss. The worst losses of course were incurred during MARA’s time when the mob decided that the airline belonged to their family.

This is a white elephant and a drain on the treasury. Best to scrap it.
It will never be a profit making venture.

      @Raheem
Oh you have not changed in your slimy greesy ways since your time at Alles’ notorious DSS College even though it’s more than three decades now.All your so called achievements in school was not due to any skill but on your ability to hold the PANDAMA. Now u seem to hold a PANDAMA for your friend no doubt as suggested in these comments to rejoin a sinking ship ….errr plane!!!!Yes your career is now at end and what more can u do than do what you do best…..hold the PANDAMA

Why do politicians think that only their kin are capable, from a country pool of talent/qualifications available in this country, and now made worse by a wife extolling the virtues of her man in public? Let the esteemed interview panel select/decide without any ministerial connection bias.

Reminds me of an erstwhile Police chief who placed a prominent minister’s letter on the head of a candidate to the Police force and told him ‘you still don’t come up to the stipulated height’ or words to that effect.

You blamed the last Govt appointments (though the criteria for selection was infinitely nepotic/political) but we expect this Govt to act better.

Totally agree. Let the selection committee decide.

      They need to consider ;

What will he bring new to UL ? Don’t we need new blood, new ideas ?

He has been with the airline for 20 yrs – cabin crew, managing shipping/logistics and fly smiles executive. Where is the ability sell in a very competitive station ?

How capable is he to compete with Emirates, Qatar Qirways, Ethiad – who hire high caliber staff ?

Best time of Sri Lankan was when it was under EK. BTW, was he with UL during that period ?

Just privatise the airline. Then we don’t need to worry about these things.

NAMS what recruitment policy are u talking about? SriLankan doesn’t have such a policy for friends and powerful people. Example 1 in hr department how many friends daughters of PradeepA kekulawala work? They have no work experience but flying high as executives where other employees are struggling hard to go up the ladder!

Example 2 – promotions as sexual favourations are so unique in the hr department it self. An executive who was a instructor on reservations is now a manager planning and analytics! (Love bird of Pradeepa whereas the husband is doing a responsible job in Sampath bank) Talk about experience and policies people…… Ha ha

Most of you bloody fools have never set eyes on Gihan and believe any crap that CT publish. Sales Manager! Come on, its not as if he was made Chairman. This is a non-story. Gihan is undoubtedly the best man for the job. He just happens to have a relative in the governmnet. As someone who cursed this Yahapalanaya from the start and predicted that it would go the way of the previous regime, I’m telling you this is just a coincidence.

    Mrs.Malalasekera.

    There is that old adage….
Fools rush in where Angels fear to tread.
I say this without any malice; In your anxiety to defend the credentials of your Husband in the social media you have unnecessarily burnt your Boat.
When old D.S.Senanayake was PM,IN THE OLD DAYS,he had to face a lot of criticism for appointing his son DUDLEY to the cabinet.
DS shot back at his critics;…
Why should I not appoint him just because he is my Son?

      Lakshman,
You are very old fashioned and narrow minded and acting like a Gamarala, or typical Godaya.Go to the Western countries and study how Harvard, Yale graduates w/o favoritisms and with proper wetting are appointed to posts.

      Plato,
YOU DO NOT KNOW THE HISTORY. You blindly misdirect the masses re appointment of Dudley. The people in this learned forum watch bad writers like you. D.S.SENANAYAKE famous for Nepotism…not just Dudley…NEVER LIVED UP TO seeing Dudley as PM. Read “A History of SRI LANKA” by K.M. de Silva 1981 ( who very wrongly considers D.S. as a Hero) and the Biography of JRJ if you need to know the conspiracies re Dudley becoming the PM. Please do not LIE TO THE READERS. WHATEVER PEN NAME you use , we watch the facts. So for this time, you sounded like an ordinary “BAYYA CHARACTER” who jabbers at the village boutique, Tea KADEy or LINDA LANGA or at the Village THOTUPOLA, while sporting a JAFFNA Suruttu.

    Mohd Ramzi Rahim,

Now you are using this forum to polish the new CEO Suren Ratwatte’s apples. Are you planning on asking him for a post with UL and returning to the sinking ship you once abandoned?

I am disappointed that you being a airline man who worked for UL,SQ,QR and now EY could make a statement that Gihan Malalasekara should be given the job based on experience you have had with him almost 25 to 30 years ago. Its the competitive world you are working now since you are a frog out of the well in case you have forgotten.

Sometimes it may be better to be a frog in the well than a rolling stone that gathers no moss.

By the way there is a pending tech log book entry that you need to fill (which is pending for years now) for a hard landing you made with another current pilot of UL that you failed to report. Staff members of UL still talk about it.

Its a pity you could not document something more important then but now you attempt to bark like a dog at the drop of a hat or rather like Rosie Malalasekara.

It is not nepotism,if he is qualified should not he appiunted because he is related to a Minister. In that way all the senior staff are either friends of raltives of eiter MPs or Minsiter. We are always prime at crticising. Please be considerate.
