Talk of Sarath Fonseka being given the Law and Order portfolio just over a week after Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe conferred the subject on himself has caused consternation in several circles, Colombo Telegraph learns.
Fonseka
Sources close to Fonseka said that he had been told by President Maithripala Sirisena that the Ministry would be given to him, when he met the latter on Wednesday morning. The President, as per provisions in the 19th Amendment [Article 43(2)], has to appoint Ministers only on the advice of the Prime Minister. However, according to Article 43(3), he ‘may at any time change the assignment of subjects and functions and the composition of the Cabinet of Ministers’. For this he does not need to heed the directions of the Prime Minister.
As such Fonseka’s appointment would only go through smoothly if the Prime Minister approves and recommends it. It is not clear at this point whether Wickremesinghe is agreeable to conceding the ministry which he himself took over recently.
Meanwhile a delegation of 10 DIGs has made representations to the President urging him not to appoint Fonseka as Law and Order Minister. Fonseka being appointed would therefore bring him directly into confrontation with these DIGs.
Colombo Telegraph also learns that Minister of Science, Technology and Research Susil Premajayanth has also met with the President to make representations against Fonseka.

Then we heard about Wele Sudda found not guilty for one case citing insufficient info. Then we heard a ruling barring Police taking action against those who are in possession of illicit brew. If the Police can’t file a case against this illegal activity, then people will start home brewery of illicit liquor as it is considered something the Police has no authority to stop. Then again Lalith who was sentenced to 3 year RI for misappropriating Rs. 600 million who was “on bail” was allowed to go abroad. Some people were allowed to go abroad whose cases are pending. But Lalith was found guilty, isn’t he? There is no similarity.

About Sarath Fonseka: There are corruption cases against him too involving procurement and there was a case involving his s-i-l too. Then after he became a Minister there was a case of a controversial accidental death of a military officer who was in one of SF’s cases. Though we don’t agree, he went through normal court proceedings and severed a jail term. Then again he betrayed and humiliated his own Army who paid a heavy price to eliminate LTTE terrorism, with a bogus “white flag” story.
Can anybody in his right mind support the move to appoint SF as the Minister of Law and Order knowing this history?

If Sirisena continues with handing out ministerial posts to ‘backdoor’ entrants like this man Fonseka (like he did with S. B. Dissanayake, Mahinda Samarasinghe, Sarath Amunugama and others) who were defeated by the public in 2015 and later, he will only be nailing his own political coffin. Fonseka is the worst loser of them all. His attempt to win presidency and his party’s bid at the 2015 election lost so badly that he lost his deposit in 2015. Backbone-less Ranil Wickremesinghe took him to the UNP and gave him a ministry out of desperation. Ranil wants to save himself from the Bond theft and to save Fonseka from the Lasantha murder. If this man is given ‘law and order’ he will become the worst dictator Sri Lanka has ever seen. But if this appointment is made, there will be an uprising of the people and the police will be on the side of the people. Winning or loosing election is immaterial to become minister. For example, we had successful nominated ministers such as Kathirkamar, Prof.GL. Peries etc because of their talents. Why should DIGs afraid if they have not done anything wrong? People will hate only those who are misuse the law and order as we saw during the previous regime. Now, most of the institutions including law & order and justice system are much improved one compare to the one we had before 2015. Whether it is Ranil or Mahinda cannot escape from Lasantha murder or Thajavudin murder or Bond scam or Arms deal. One day they have to face the justice.

Mr. Kathirkamar did not loose elections because he did not contested. GL Peris only once contested and won in 2000 for one year under PA and came as Minister in Nationa list for UNP. He is one longest serving military commander and under his command he won the war with LTTE. So his contribution to the nation is much more than the contribution of Mahinda. In the presidential election he got over 40% of the public. There is no corruption charges against him unlike Mahinda. So, morally and lawfully he has the right to be the minister of Law & order.
