Talk of Sarath Fonseka being given the Law and Order portfolio just over a week after Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe conferred the subject on himself has caused consternation in several circles, Colombo Telegraph learns.
Fonseka
Sources close to Fonseka said that he had been told by President Maithripala Sirisena that the Ministry would be given to him, when he met the latter on Wednesday morning. The President, as per provisions in the 19th Amendment [Article 43(2)], has to appoint Ministers only on the advice of the Prime Minister. However, according to Article 43(3), he ‘may at any time change the assignment of subjects and functions and the composition of the Cabinet of Ministers’. For this he does not need to heed the directions of the Prime Minister.
As such Fonseka’s appointment would only go through smoothly if the Prime Minister approves and recommends it. It is not clear at this point whether Wickremesinghe is agreeable to conceding the ministry which he himself took over recently.
Meanwhile a delegation of 10 DIGs has made representations to the President urging him not to appoint Fonseka as Law and Order Minister. Fonseka being appointed would therefore bring him directly into confrontation with these DIGs.
Colombo Telegraph also learns that Minister of Science, Technology and Research Susil Premajayanth has also met with the President to make representations against Fonseka.

They all support President Duterte’s hard measures to get rid of drugs and organized crime from Philippines. If you are senior commentators in CT, you would remember my housekeeper Silvestra. Glaring issue as we see is the appointment of SF as Minister of Law and Order when criminals of the highest level are appointed as Ministers without batting an eye lid. If the Two leaders are honest in their Yahapalana concept they cannot point a finger at SF. He will do his job strictly according to the oath of allegiance.We know he has been loyal to our country more than any present day politician that is why he has been awarded that
prestigious Position. People already know who are opposing and objecting to His appointment and why. They know they cannot bargain with him as they did with the previous Minister. In this back drop why is the President and the PM waiting for. If you two, together address this issue honestly and according to laws of Justice
you could go before the people honourably for another term . We hope and pray that saner decisions will prevail.

Minister of L & O: Since they do not seem to be agreeing with our proposal to select SF as the Minister of Law and Order, let me make another. Before you start shaking your heads, let me explain. The Minister of Law and Order has to have Charisma in full measure and a strong personality. Sirisena has no charisma and with that Cheshire Cat grin, projects a weak personality. The only thing he is good at seems to be childcare. Let him remain as President and also oversee the Ministry of Child Care and Protection. If there is no such Ministry, make one. That should keep him busy without entering areas he knows nothing about and making trouble for himself and others too.
Ranil has a little bit of charisma but not in sufficient levels. He can be PM and the Minister of Garbage Disposal and Laundering.
Now we come to the real guy. Mahinda. The man has charisma to spare and with that buffalo horn moustache, projects a very strong personality. There will be no dancing out of tune with him. Let him be the Minister of Law and Order.
