Gautama Buddha For Sale

By V. Kanthaiya

You don’t need to go to Kovil and worship the god at all. What the god wants from you is very simple. Be a good person in your life. That’s enough. If you be evil, what’s the point in worshiping the god?” – Told to to V. Kanthaiya by his mother while he was a kid, when he asked why he should go to Kovil and worship the god.

I ask you a question. Do we really need a religion to interact with the God?

monks_fighting colombo telegraphTo answer this, I would like to define the parameters. Who/What is the god? The concept god is that he/she/it is the grand designer and the operator of the universe and every element in it and he/she/it is indefinite and beyond all boundaries.

What is a religion? Well, for that we need to first familiarize ourselves with the basic concepts of business and marketing.

We have several needs. One such is called spiritual need (not liquor). From the day we started to think, we are trying to find the answer why we exist at all. The concept of God came to fill this need. Religions are intermediaries between the common man and the almighty god. They are a set of institutions who act as the sole agents of God, each just creating different brands, out of the homogeneous product. This can simply be explained through the smart phone operating system market.

Google releases its nexus phones with its ‘pure’ android version, where as other players such as Samsung, LG, Sony, HTC and one plus one add their own flavor to the android OS, in terms of user interface and release under their own brand. This is what every religion practically does. They use the so called messengers, Jesus, Mohamad and some other rituals to prove that their product is superior to their competitor.

I made the following interesting observations how this ‘religion’ industry operates. Every religion is tailor made to suit the needs of the early followers. For example, Hinduism and Buddhism vehemently oppose killing domestic animals for any reason and call it a sin. However the religion of peace (as per Izeth Hussain) and Christianity allow it. The reason is that Rigvedic civilizations were dependent on the domestic animals, especially cattle, thus it was banned to kill them, whereas the Middle Eastern civilization were primarily nomadic, thus it was allowed to consume the meat of the domestic animals saying god has created them for mankind.

Please note. There may be a god or may not be a god. That is out of the scope of this article. The institutions like Rashthriya Swayamsevak sangh (RSS) of India, the Catholic Church, the Maha Sangha of Sri Lanka ( hope no need to mention about religion of peace) act as the governing bodies of the respective religions, and safe guard them. The most striking commonality is that they work hard for the existence, survival and the growth of their institution, not necessarily to promote the core values. Of course, this is what every institution does, including every business entity in the world, government of United States of America, government of Sri Lanka, LTTE, SLFP, UNP, JVP, and the management of every reputed government/semi government school. They are more concerned about their own survival and growth as an institution and of their leadership inner circle rather than about the common man.

LTTE would be the best example for this. First the organization emerged to fight for the rights of the Tamils. Then once they successfully emerged as a well-equipped de-facto government, they expected the Tamils to sacrifice themselves for the organization and the LTTE leadership. On the other hand, Sri Lankan government is not ready to investigate the Matale mass grave (there is no point in discussing the numerous mass graves in north and east), which is of the Sinhala youth massacred during the JVP rebellion. Government of Sri Lanka will never punish its soldiers for the massacres they have done, because those massacres were done to safeguard the government. Not only to the Sri Lankan state, this is applicable to every government in the world. What about the Catholic Church? Is it ready to thoroughly investigate the child abuse allegations on the priests and publicly disclose what are the actions it has taken to prevent such things in the future?

Alright? What irked me to write all these global phenomenon?

Last week the media reported that the Buddha Sasana Karya Sadhaka Mandalaya, an umbrella organization comprising Maha Sangha and several other right wing Buddhist organizations has urged the government of Sri Lanka to not to alter the foremost place given the Buddha Sasana in the article 9 of the constitution.

First of all, why Buddhist organizations are very much concerned about the survival of their religion? From whom the religion face the threat and what kind of threat is that? The claim that Buddhism is unique to Sri Lanka is completely false. It is widely practiced in Cambodia (97%), Thailand (93%), Myanmar (80%), Bhutan (75%), Laos (66%) and Mongolia (55%) along with Sri Lanka (69%).

Is Bhuddism indigenous to Sri Lanka? Mahavamsa tells that it is brought by the Buddhist missionaries from the present Madya Pradesh of India, notably by Mahinda, the son of king Ashoka. In other words, Buddhism is a religion imported from India, just like Hinduism, Religion of Peace and Christianity which came from different parts of the world in different period of time.

If the constitution is supposed to give prominence to a particular religion, logically it should be given the mysticism or whatever the religion practiced by the ‘Veddas’ (Indigenous People) of this country because their culture and tradition are at a grave risk and the religion is the endemic religion of Sri Lanka.

Then why the self-claimed guardians of Buddhism are urging the government to give prominence to Buddhism in the constitution itself? Because they thrive on it. Buddhism, the belief of the common man on Gautama Buddha as the God is the sole resource these right wing organizations have for their own leadership inner circle’s survival, growth, fame, power and wealth.

The whole purpose of these institutions is not spreading the teachings of Gautama Buddha who preached non-violence. In Sri Lanka (also in Myanmar), right wing Buddhist organizations use violence to promote non-violence. So manly lives have been destroyed. So much blood has been spilled, so much of suffering has been endured. And all these are justified as necessary evils to safeguard the teachings of Gautama Buddha. Is this what Gautama Buddha wanted his followers to practice?

A distinct group in our society obtains power, fame and wealth just by selling Gautama Buddha, and not his teachings. They claim they are the guardians of his teachings and the values he has left for mankind. No one dares to question this, because he/she can be branded as an insane.

How long the present society is going to believe whatever they are told. When will it start to think and realize that they are being fooled? When will they realize that the best way to promote the teachings of Buddha is to practice the ‘pure’ version of his philosophy?

Good questions indeed. Religions had their purpose in the anarchic past of humanity. With liberalism we now have a formula to live in peace with our fellow man and each thrive. Time for Sri Lanka to give up religious zealotry and embrace liberalism.

        Hear, Hear V. Kanthaiya,

        You say:

“The concept god is that he/she/it is the grand designer and the operator of the universe and every element in it and he/she/it is indefinite and beyond all boundaries.”

        Then you clarify:

“Please note. There may be a god or may not be a god.”

Buddha, Jesus, Mohamed, Sai Baba and others got their fame, etc. by founding some of these religions.

Now the lesser mortals mentioned by Kanthaiya are getting fame, money and even sex from these religious institutions.

Technological inventions are useful to vast majority of humans in making their lives easier.

However, the invention of God is the cursed invention of mankind.

Humans have many difference amongst them as a cause for fighting. They don’t religion too.

But the sad reality is that the human mind is weak and needs a psychological prop through religion to stay calm. Why else is 85% of people in the world are religious?

Thank ‘God’ that he spared the animals from this divisive menace!

We can go on criticizing religions, and we will be branded as atheists or extremists!

Greta article Kanthiya.. Fun to read.. I like the phrase you used “Operator of the World”… That was the explanation I was searching for to describe my wife’s and MIL’s strong and prominent belief (problem/fear) of Karama, Sansara and reincarnation.
Again your repeated usage of “Religion of Peace” is hilarious… Good on you mate.. Keep writing when you get time.

      Hey Sharmini and Kandayya,

I think it is high time to reform Mahawansa.

Why was that the job was done long ago ?

Those who worked for their theses in Buddhist Literiture could have done that long ago. I wonder why none of them did an inch to that direction ?

Even bible was being reformed .. but lies filled Mahawansa- stayed as unchanged ? How come.

So, only those who commit sins, must go to Kovils, Temples, Churches and Mosques to Worship God and Atone for Sins.

If fact, if you sample the people going in, you will find that the vast majority will admit, if they tell you the truth, that they have been sinners.

So, through the Grape wine.. need discipline for the sinner and start with the Buddhist Monk Sinners.

This writer does not understand Christianity or Islam. Let us leave Islam aside for the moment because most of you including Izeh Hussein do not understand Islam.
Man sinned against God. All of you are sinners is the message of Christ and Moses. Even a new born baby has sinned and is condemned to damnation unless he is saved by the grace of God. So, repent.
Remember, it is NOT enough to live a good life and believe in God. That is a heresy. A lot of people were burnt at the stake for believing in that heresy.
If you don’t know that read
        https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pelagianism

So, The Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith Patabandige will tell you that if you want to go to heaven, the alone Pope is the agent of God on earth, and others are imposters, and that the Pope has relegated to him the job of servicing Sri Lanka.

Instead you can ask Bishop Duleep De Chikera who wanted to buy wine from Prabhakaran during the hight of the war for Christian chruch rites, and he will tell you that he and his successor Canagasabey are the real agents of God on earth.
On the other hand, Islam does not have priests.

      Thank you. Very succinct.

Why is Gautama Buddha For Sale by these so called Sangha clowns? Because, thet think they own Buddha. That is their differentiation and high-caste symbol. They want to guard it.

They call themselves to be the Third Gem of the Triple Gem, Sangha, adfter Buddha and Dhamma.

Do you need Sangha for Buddhism? No.

So, start the Double Gem movement, Buddha and Dhamma. It will put an end to this business.

Martin Luther? Where are you? Sinhala Buddhists in the Land of Native Veddah Aethho need your guidance and help.

      Jim,

Spot on. The writer seem to be a Hindian Tamil Sumpremist, but with a Dalit background, aiming to divide the Sri Lankans, on religious lines. These folks do not like the good side of all religions which are well practiced in Sri Lanka.

Patriotic Sri Lankans are well advised to read between the lines of these writers with a mission to create havoc in our country… and avoid falling into the traps of hatred and divisions.

It is very clear Kandthiya made his point fair and square! Those who cannot front the opinions and with opinions go with personal attacks! Buddhism is not meant to be a religion and Buddha is certainly NOT A GOD!! Buddha would have been the first challenging voice if Buddhism was to be made a special religion!

Buahaahaahaa… is Gnanasara any better? His violent monk brigade any better? The same Gnanasara said he loves chicken curry, and no Buddhist raised any question. Although you are trying to mock Islam, it is definitely the religion of peace, the numbers related to the recent violence or death are nothing compared to all the deaths and destruction in the last two world wars, in the red indian-natives of America or the aborigines of Australia or the death and destruction caused in Afghanistan or Iraq, why don’t you check who was responsible for all these.

Even your so called savior Prabkaran was responsible for more violence and deaths in the last 30 years, than what Islam related violence had in the last hundred years.

Kanthaiya, your mother was a wise lady to say that “You don’t need to go to Kovil and worship the god at all. What the god wants from you is very simple. Be a good person in your life. That’s enough. If you be evil, what’s the point in worshiping the god?”

Most ‘religious’ people use ‘God’ as a crutch to turn to when they are afraid, want favours from the ‘almighty’ and/or as an excuse to start some sort of exercise in bigotry. And many of the priests use their flock to gain power, wealth and status.

Followers of the Buddha’s philosophy don’t need to worship priests and pay pooja to them, when all they need to do to get on the path to Nirvana is to follow the Four Noble Truths and Eightfold path. Christians could live according to the Ten Commandments and the other faiths could live according to the morality taught by their respective teachers or prophets.

      S.A. Rama Ussa

The Buddhism “Sri Lankans” believe in and love is known as Sinhala-Buddhism (or Mahavamsa-Buddhism) which is different from the Theravada Buddhism practiced in other countries such as Cambodia, Thailand, Myanmar, Bhutan, Laos and so on.

According to Theravada Buddhism, a person ordained as a Bikkhu should practice Ahimsa (non-violence), Karuna (compassion), Metta (affection), and Maithriya (loving-kindness) towards fellow humans, (irrespective of race or religion), not only by words but also in his thoughts and action. Unfortunately in Sri Lanka, due to the influence of the Mahavamsa, a Buddhist Bikkhu is at liberty to engage in racist politics and promote Sinhala-Buddhist chauvinism, hatred, and violence as we see today in the name of protecting Buddhism.

Well said Prasad. Buddhism is not limited to a race. It explains Universal Law as it applies to everything and everyone. Unfortunately in Sri Lanka Mahavamsa is destroying the invaluable teachings of Buddha causing suffering to it’s followers and others.

So Called Hinduism has many different gods, some are against buddhism and some are with buddhism. Kanthiya seems to be in a religion that is against buddhism. for example, Kali worshippers kill animals for pooja and buddhists against killing.

        Jim,

Goddess Pattini Amma and the devil Goddess Kali Amma are always found together in most of the Hindu temples/devale. If you go to the Nawagamuwa Devale, most of the Sinhala-Buddhists worship both these Goddesses.

Did Buddha or any of the the Buddhist texts outline why Vishnu should be in Buddhist temples?

// Kali worshippers kill animals for pooja and buddhists against killing. //
But, they can happily eat meat, can they? After all, Buddhists are not killing, and that is fine, right?

What Buddhism Sri Lankans believe in and love? Is it Gautama Buddha version or any hybrid version, made for the ‘Land Like No Other’?

I remember the time when I was in Peradeniya, from the university to Kandy. Along the road, there was a small Buddhist temple. Everyone would collectively lift their bottoms from the seat for a fraction of a second and settle. I was curious about this practice, because I never thought Buddhism would require that. I had a ‘serious Buddhist’ classmate, and I asked him why they were doing it. He said, “it was a group fart”.

Spot on. Do we need a religion? The truth is we don’t. What you need is a mechanism for believing. Not necessarily in religion. Religions do not own the god. Religions only act as guides. God does not have a religion. God the almighty is not a person or individual, but an infinite structure which includes the whole universe. No one can bribe the god as bribe itself is included as part of god and it does not make any changes.

All the loud prayers heal those who pray and not that god is listening to the prayers. If human beings, whether priests monks fight each other for supremacy, it just indicate that they are animals and not educated either in religion or human values. All the so called prophets had to die because they were just human beings. Of course the prophets guided the people to live as human beings and they deserve to be worshiped.

But it is a foolish practice to commit crime in the name of religion and swindle the public of their earnings to make a living as a religious person.

Belief is personal, not for marketing and making an earning. Everyone has to die only once. So don’t be foolish.

First and foremost the Buddhism practiced by the Sinhalese is an insult to the true preaching’s of Lord Buddha. The Sinhalese are converts to Buddhism thanks to Sangamitta Thera from India. Buddhism is not about planting Buddha Statues in every street corner, by the side of dirty drains, next to meat/fish markets and alcohol shops or close to other locations of other religious worship creating disassociation and a nuisance. Buddhism is not about planting Buddha Statues by three wheeler drivers and administration of the same by such low caste principled yakko type fellows. Buddhism is not about blasting pirith on loudspeakers desecrating the silence of the environment. The statue of Lord Buddha is not a Christmas tree for an ignorant shameless population of Sinhalese to decorate with sparkling colorful lights to gain attraction. Buddhism is not a pedestal for a group of Mahanayake theros to create divisional politics and caste based nikayas such as the Siam, Malwatte, Asgiriya that play and pander with the dirty politics and racist policies of Sinhalese political leaders such as SWRD Bandaranayake and very recently Mahinda Rajapakse. Buddhism is not about these Mahanayake Theras to keep conveniently silent when thousands of Tamils were being murdered on the basis of patriotism and heroism in riots of 1915, 1956, 1958, 1977, 1983 and finally State genocide of 2009 by Sinhalese and only make an issue that Lord Buddha’s photographs need to be banned from being published in Newspapers because fish and meat or alcohol can be wrapped in the those same newspapers. Buddhism is not about banning meat and alchohol and even theatres on Poya days while Sinhalese are seen ganging up at supermarkets and shops the day before filling their larders with meat and alcohol. When Rev. Sangamitra Thera converted these uncivilized Sinhalese to Buddhism, little did he realize that these monkeys would one day abuse and use this religion as a tool for criminalizing society and manipulate the same for religious intolerance and racism. It is sad that India, being the true land of Lord Buddha and having the most exemplary Buddhists of the world fails to make a statement of the level of abuse and shameless indiscipline that is perpetrated by the Sinhalese in the name of Buddhism in Sri Lanka bringing untold shame on this great son of India Lord Buddha.

Re. Spark’s comment, his strident criticism is about today’s Lankan Buddhism – prostituted and politicised progressively since the 1950’s by various unbuddhistic characters. It must be said there are millions of pious, practising Buddhists who lead a life as taught by Gauthama – the Buddha. These are found in India, Burma, Thailand, Cambodia and many other countries that took on the Code of Conduct that was a gift to the world through a great son from the Indian soil. In Sri Lanka as well, despite all this trickery there are, even today, many pious devoted Buddhists and Buddhist priests. But, in the main, those at the helm of affairs as different Mahanayakas have no qualms to treat Lankan Buddhism as a tool for political gains. It is puzzling why the Buddhist hierarchy or the ACBC have not closed ranks and taken to task that disgraceful thug, criminal and arch religio-communalist Gnanassara. This loose cannon lowers the image of Buddhism among the good Buddhists and other citizens in the country by his outrageous behaviour – coming under different labels at different times.

The good name of Lankan Buddhism has to be saved from shenanigans such as this local Raspuutin – caught, inter alia, for drunk-driving and that too, in a lorry. Are they waiting until he does a Buddharakhita once again bringing local Buddhism to disrepute.

Before talking about the ‘intelligent’ Buddhists of Sri Lanka that I have seen, let me talk about some Theravada Buddhist countries that I have heard.

Cambodia is 97% Buddhist, Pol Pot himself was a communist and Theravada Buddhist (‘intelligent’ philosophy) who did not believe in God. He was known as the Butcher of Cambodia, a man slaughter who killed tens of thousands of people.
Thailand is 93% Buddhist, very famous for prostitution, someone told me Buddhism promotes prostitution.
Myanmar is 80% Buddhist, the Buddhists monks in this country are Barbarians, they are extremely violent and killing non-Buddhists is like sport for them.

Sri Lanka is 69% Buddhist, I have seen Buddhist Bhikkus behaving like thugs. They take part in violent protest rallies, burn flags and effigies, scream in filth, I have seen a Buddhist Bhikku lobbing a hand grenade at the ShaRuk Khan show in Colombo. A Buddhist Bhikku even shot and killed our Prime Minister. The clergy of the so called ‘intelligent’ philosophy is sometimes very violent and barbaric and the Buddhist laypeople are mostly gullible morons.

After seeing and hearing all the above, how do you expect us to believe that Buddhism is a ‘intelligent’ philosophy?

Has 2500 years of Buddhism in Sri Lanka influenced any major changes in the Sinhala society in terms of attitude, character, behavior, morality and so on?
NO, it failed miserably, Buddhism is a total failure in Sri Lanka.

“Buddhism is a total failure in Sri Lanka.”

Please note, Sinhala/Buddhism failed not Buddha’s teaching nor Buddhism.

      Herby Padmaperuma.

“WE BUDDHIST HIGHLY OBJECT TO THE CAPTION OF THIS IDIIOTIC WRITE UP AND FEEL OUTRAGED AT THE EDITOR OF THIS NEWS PAPER FOR HIS SHORTSIGHTED CHOICE OF THE BOLD CAPTION”

Do the Sinhala/Buddhist need any reason to be outraged?

They are outraged all the time, before and after, breakfast, lunch, and dinner, in between too, 24/7/52 basis, in the house, on the road, aboard aircraft, while being employed and unemployed, rich or poor, “educated” or not, drunk or sober, ……..

      What is new?

” Kandaiya you speak bull shit.”

Please make sure you close your mouth just in case it hit you inside your throat.

      ” but an intelligent Philosophy”

If so what has it got to do with you?

“So your topic Gautama Buddha for Sale, is sheer cow shit mad, stupid, idiotic thinking/knowledge.”

      A typical Sinhala/Buddhist jihadi.

Could I remind you how Buddha handled his abusive critic, “If someone gives you a gift and you refuse to accept it, to whom does the gift belong?”

Go read on Buddha’s teaching, come back and tell us why you are not a BUddha’s follower but a typical Sinhala/Buddhists Jihadi.

Did you half raise your sarong just before you typed your outrage?

Here is something you wouldn’t have known and make use of this opportunity to learn what Buddha taught:

May all beings everywhere be happy, peaceful, and free.
      – The Buddha

Display a heart of boundless love for all the world.
      – The Buddha

All that we are arises with our thoughts. With our thoughts, we make the world.
      – The Buddha

If you have any doubts about Buddhism please contact V. Kanthaiya Annoy’s donkey. It knows more about Buddhism than you ignorant lot.

If something is fading away, perhaps it’s because people no longer see the value of it?
And when it comes to spirituality or philosophy, value cannot be imposed by any party.

    Kanthaiya,

The word for God in Tamil is Kadavul, meaning that which is outside and within us. I interpret this as the force that makes this universe function. I understand this to be the logic that drives the entire system, including us. Further, there is a definition that says that this thing (Porul) is something beyond what we know of the past ( munaipalamaikum munai Palam porulay) and something yet awaiting to be comprehended in the future ( pinaimputhumaikum paytrum appetriyanay), which means that it is the unknown and the yet un-understood is what we call God. Since the more we know, the more that remains unknown, we will always have a God who will fill a void in our lives.

Middleton Murray in his book on the working of the Vatucan said,” There was only one Christian and he died on.the cross”. This true of all established religions. The bricks, mortar and the priests become more important than the substance. This our curse. The same is true of politics, an art/ science to serve the people. Religion and politics when paired become a much multiplied curse. Duplicity, lies, corruption, self-seeking ,exploitation and the violence that have become embodied in politics are provided a varnish of degraded religion!

      Dear Dr.RN.

‘The word for God in Tamil is Kadavul, meaning that which is outside and within us. I interpret this as the force that makes this universe function. I understand this to be the logic that drives the entire system, including us.’

My simple understanding of god is very easy to explain which may interest you. A super power called god does not exist. There are many reasons to take into account to understand this. The next issue is that god cannot be exclusive,it has to be inclusive. So, the only possibility for this to comply with is to accept that everything in the universe sensible is regarded as god. Defining life is essential at this point as god has to be living. Living cannot be defined by considering human beings. Take a note of the character of all forms of life that we could observe, then you will be able to define life as ‘Processing of information by an organized body’. Information includes energy as well.

I find it is easy to understand the universe as god because everything what you can see in the world comply with the requirement of being organized one way or the other.

Hence I find it is waste of time to read religious books or other to understand what is God. All form of life is part and parcel of God and there cannot be rebirth. Our thoughts are influenced by astronomical positions and the objectives are programmed in our genes – very cleverly.

        Adrian,

Thanks for your thoughts. It appears that it is the DNA and its interactions with the environment, in its many dimensions, that provides both our continuity and adaptations. This is the logic I was referring to. There is much more to be learned about genetic and environmental (including cosmic) interactions.’

Religion and ignorance go hand in hand.

If 85% of humans belong or believe in religion then just imagine what a sad, sorry bunch of ignorant mortals we are. No wonder mass hunger, strife and war is endemic.

For all those who are grappling with the concept of god, I wish to tell you quite plainly that there is no god of any sort anywhere. Life occurred accidentally where all kinds of elements came together due to geothermal activity to create the original nuclei. From there we kept evolving to what we are today.

.Then who or what caused the elements to come together and the geothermal activity for the creation of the original nuclei?
It is an impossible riddle to ponder.
The barrier of ignorance is just that.
