Gotabhay Rajapaksa’s appalling behaviour started after LTTE suicide attempt some years ago and as a result of this his head on the right side was knocked so hard, since then he has no control over his emotions especially anger, a Rajapkasa family friend reveals.

Last Sunday, Willa Wickramasinghe a businessman and a close confidant of President Mahinda Rajapaksa visited a private hospital to check on an aged female family friend whom he had known for years and who was well versed in political matters in the country. During the visit which lasted for about an hour many interesting topics were discussed. The discussion then turned on to the latest media glare that spilt news on Secretary to the Ministry of Defence Gotabhya’s puppy.
It was alarming to note that there was not a hint of remorse or a feeling of shame from this gentleman for the disgusting manner in which the Secretary to the Ministry of Defence replied to the Sunday Leader editor Frederica Jansz who called him to verify facts. This is despite the fact that the ailing patient went on and on to explain that such behaviour was not welcomed from a person from that caliber and position. She further mentioned that if such threats were made publicly by any other person he or she would have been sued.

Whilst any person with an iota of intellect would consider this tantamount to pure intimidation and threats as the person concerned is not just any one but a man of authority and power. It is hard to imagine that this senior citizen with all his left oriented ideas and years of experience, trying to whitewash Gota’s outrage by making an excuse, mentioning an attempted assassination which was blamed on the LTTE in 2006. It’s a fact that we all know that he escaped unhurt from this ordeal whilst two commandos were killed instantly. But he went on to justify his appalling behaviour saying “this is a result of the Secretary’s brush with death during the attempted suicide some years ago. As a result of his head on the right side was knocked so hard and since then he has no control over his emotions especially anger.”
Adding insult to injury he stated that he can’t imagine why the Gotabhaya Rajapaksa bothered to answer the call knowing very well that the caller was this woman journalist. He said “a man of such high position should have a person to monitor incoming telephone calls and only calls that are important should be answered by him”
This discussion was later joined by the senior Minister DEW Gunasekara who was very sympathetic towards the Secretary saying “In the interview which he has given to the media today he had admitted that he lost his temper”, implying we have to excuse this poor man’s behaviour no matter what and that Sunday Leader is only making a big drama out of the whole episode.
This reflects how senior citizens and people holding responsible positions who brag themselves to be leftists not only trying to justify but try to deny the fact that Defence Ministry Secretary is not to be blamed for his improper conduct and trying to divert blame elsewhere.

How funny that the story has turned out to be about everything and everyone other than the NEWS ARTICLE itself which highlighted that 1. Fifty six passengers were to be offloaded (inconveniencing them and incurring loss to Sri Lankan Airlines)
2.(along with the fact that Sri Lankan Airlines is in severe debt)
and a smaller aircraft used, for the sole sad purpose of bringing a stupid dog from Switzerland for Gota’s wife
3. while also questioning who was paying for the passage of a pilot for this ridiculous task.
Channa, Kumudini and all those other people out there, we need to be focused on what is best of our country. So what if Gota helped bring down the LTTE. These guys have been paid (with the blood, sweat and tears of our people apart from tax payers hard earned money ofcourse) to do what they do (remember some of them were voted in by the people?) and have they not stolen more in their rule than any other government before?
So get a grip on reality people & take note of the important facts! There are people out there (not the cowards who report what the GOSL spokespeople tell them to) who risk their lives to let us all know what is happening behind the scenes. It may not be the journalism they themselves choose to communicate but that is not their choice is it? They don’t invent stories, they broadcast them so we can all be aware of the Truth. These people deserve some respect.
PS. Setting examples is what people in leadership need to be doing. So, leave alone the bigger stuff for another debate but if Gota wants a dog, can he not get one from Odel’s kennels and do some good? And the language – even the language he said he used, was that appropriate for any interview? There’s simply no excuse for such a silly display of arrogance and anger.

I know because I was there when even the stars of the army were hoping that the war would end politically and that may have been why Ranil got the PM ship. Last year I made the mistake of flying Sri Lankan (from London) on the second leg of a trip from USA to Sri Lanka. At Heathrow, I was appalled at how Sri Lankan airline staff kept passengers waiting in the lounge long past the boarding time, offering no apologies or a reason for the delay. They made a muted announcement upon my demand for it, after falsely claiming they had already made such an announcement (in their heads!). It does reflect badly on the side you choose to take, because after all this is about the foul mouthed, high ranking government servant, who does not seem to have the temperament to hold his post. These ugly attacks on Ms.Jansz, who after all, is a journalist doing what they are supposed to do, even though you may not agree with her methods, is uncalled for. If the Goat head does not have the expertise and maturity to handle her like a statesmen, then he is totally unsuitable for such a post. The media is known for aggressive questioning,provocation, and like or not, trying to find a scoop, and if the person interviewed does not have the temperament, class, nor the maturity to handle it, then you cannot fault someone for trying to do their job. The nation is tired of Gota’s arrogance because he claims he wiped out terrorism (by methods human rights groups question), and his false sense of entitlement.
Even if we pretend that Ms.Jansz was being provocative, there was no reason for Gota to warn her of being killed, because right now we have journalists and activists kidnapped, missing and killed, and Gota seems insensitive to the fact that many in the country look at the Rajapaksa regime with suspicion and mistrust.

It is ridiculous to suggest that Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa is “mentally sick” because someone says he had a knock on the head. There has been an orchestrated campaign to malign and demonise Lt. Col. Rajapaksa, probably because of the power of his speeches in both Sinhala and English, and his role in defeating the LTTE army.
It is possible to provoke anyone into losing their temper, and from the rude, hostile interviews I have seen both Gotabaya Rajapaksa and Rajiva Wijesinha subjected to by the likes of the BBC “Hardtalk” program both have a long fuse when it comes to losing their temper.
It is easy for people to sit in judgement over little episodes of videotaped or recorded outbursts of anger when people are provoked. Lt. Col. Rajapaksa has every reason to get angry with Jansz, especially after 30 years of war by people intent on dividing the country along ethnic and linguistic lines, rather than promoting harmony between the people of Sri Lanka. (Shades of the old Empire game of Divide and Rule – noting that the LTTE was headquartered in London for most of its existence, being the residence of Anton and Adele Balasingham).
Gotabaya Rajapaksa comes across to me (having watched both sympathetic and hostile interviews with him) as a man who is both direct and assertive, but not confrontational or aggressive, and certainly not insane. It is, in fact, defamatory to make such claims.
As for these so-called “journalists”, many people who were working as propagandists for the LTTE and Eelamists called themselves “journalists”. None of them identified themselves as “propagandists” regardless of how biased their writings were.

It is true that Gota is more soldier than statesman.
It is true that he uses much blunter language than most politicians.
It is true he should NOT be in such frequent contact with the press but should have a press secretary to handle all interviews.
Efforts to suppress LTTE propaganda is a legitimate tactic in the battle to win hearts and minds.
The allegations of “whitevanning” and the like are not proven, and LTTE propaganda department is excellent at fabricating so called evidence (eg Channel 4 doctored videos).
Sri Lanka is not Europe or America. You HAVE to fight dirty to survive. The UN cannot change a culture of brutality in politics dating back more than a Millenium by a resolution. Or a million and one resolutions.
Gota plays the game AND WINS! Thus there is much animosity towards him among the losers.

Our country was never corrupt.In fact it a blessed country with best soil, the greens,vegetation,mountains,water, lakes, climate, natural beauty etc,etc. Foreign rulers developed it to a great extent. It’s always a case of shoot the messenger, I don’t think FJ is much of a journalist however no one in public office has the right to use foul language, after all she is a taxpayer and public officers need to behave in a manner befitting such high office.
As for Mr Cassi Chetty, by his own admission comes to Sri Lanka once a year, and imagines he is such an authority on the country? Leave your adopted nation and live in Sri Lanka if you think it’s doing so well, why don’t you? Economy is in bad shape, every govt department is running at a loss, high incidence of rape on children and women, murders reported daily, escalating prices, schools and hospitals in worst state ever, nepotism, thugs and goons nominated at election time….need I go on?
It’s still not too late for the President to change things around by appointing educated and suitable people so the can bring about a change for the better. There is no pride in being a Beggar King.

The Sri Lankan diaspora, have to wake up to real facts and stop imagining that all is perfect or all is bad. We have our good and bad, and at the moment the bad seems to outweigh the good. Sri Lanka as a country is wonderful but over the years we have been cursed with self serving officials in govt. the diaspora who think all is great should come back to live here and those who think its all bad should stay away and stop supporting terrorism.
Sri lankans greatest strength is the ability to put up with trials and tribulations and resilience., however these same traits are also what we are cursed with
