Gotabaya Rajapaksa: Ban The Burqa And Niqab In Sri Lanka – An Online Petition Launched

Bodu Bala Sena has launched an online campaign against Burqa and Niqab. “Ban of face covering cloths”, the BBS CEO Dilanthe Withanage posted in his Facebook. He also posted the official web link of the Government of Netherlands decision to ban clothing that covers the face, which says; “The government has reaffirmed the decision to introduce a general ban on wearing clothing that covers the face in public. It believes that people need to be able to look each other in the eye and interact with recognisable faces. Open communication is vital in public places. Wearing clothing that covers the face is not appropriate in an open society like the Netherlands, where participation in social intercourse is crucial.”

Meanwhile an online petition also launched urging Secretary to the Ministry of Defence to ban the Burqa and Niqab in Sri Lanka. The petitioners says;

The Secretary of Defence Mr. Gotabaya Rajapaksha: Ban the Burqa and Niqab in Sri Lanka

We believe that the government should Ban the Burka.

It’s a threat to national security

This is still officially a buddhist country and it should not go out of its way to appease foreign ideologies. This isn’t even just a religious symbol, considering some islamic countries have bans

It is a symbol of oppression of women in foreign countries

We call on the government to Ban the Burka immediately.

    Ban poya days.

Yes let’s ban poya days. The SL economy is crashing and too many days are lost on Poya holiday – 12 days a year. Sri Lanka cannot afford to have so many holidays – it is not economically viable or rational.

The Burqua should be banned because it is unjust to force women to cover themselves in a hot and HUMID country which can cause skin and other disease. The Burqua should be banned to save Muslim women from oversexed Muslim Men> Muslim men who because they cannont control THEMseves – force women to cover their bodies. Why should Muslim women cover themselves because Muslim men cannot control their lust and sexual groping?! Blood joke!
Muslim women are being forced to cover themselves in a hot tropical country which can cause many skin diseases because Muslim men do NOT trust their own Muslim brothers – to not to sexually harass their own (Muslim) women.. What a convoluted JOKE this is!

        Mr. Dinuk,

Why don’t you stop dead in you tracks and ask yourself what Muslim women think! Have any of you ever considered if Muslim women want to expose themselves so that all men can lust over them?

Also why only Muslim dresses? Why not other religions? Why stop with religion why not stop western attire altogether?

Lets List all the things that we ought to ban

        01. Cheewaraya- Safron robes are an eye sore.
        02. Burqah/ Nikab- Scary/frightening
        03. Pants- Reminds us of colonialism
        04. Shalwar/Kamis- North Indian
        05. Saree- Indian- who wants to follow India
        06. Sarong- Indian
        07- Reddai hettei- Kerala/Indian

We are left with the Amude.

        Part of a news report.

” Whether they admit it or not, virtually all Westerners hate the niqab and burka for the anti-democratic ideology and misogynistic gender relations they signify. Many are increasingly willing to say so.

Why does political correctness fall away when it comes to the niqab? Because other Islamist inroads, like shariah banking, happen offstage, so to speak. They are not “seen” by the public. But the niqab is open to the collective public gaze. Individuals responding to their own discomfort observe that discomfort mirrored in other people’s faces, which in turn emboldens them to protest. Politicians know grassroots support when they see it and several Western leaders have seized the moment for legislating partial or full niqab bans.

Parallel to the parliamentary efforts now advancing in France and Belgium, Quebec recently tabled a new law, Bill 94, which will ban the niqab — or any face cover–when extending and receiving public services in such institutions as courts, hospitals, schools and licensing bureaus. “

Lion,i was also thinking like you because what if prabha is still alive as claimed by some and starts to walk around with burqa and niqab.Anyone will think this is a short fat muslim woman and he has a squeaky voice too.Even if this is not banned security forces should be allowed to do some spot checks once in a way by putting their hands underneath and checking whether any ding dongs are there. If prabha sees this happening he will think twice about walking around brazenly in burqa and niqab.

Gota and his bodu balukukkas must be mainly worried about prabha because he had about 10 body doubles and they may have just found one of them planted to deceive them.Pottu’s body also never found.Prabha and pottu are like a gay couple always together.I wonder whether that death certificate has been given at last to india for rajiv case?

I was reading the Foreign Report.com an excerpt is given below

[Sri Lanka: Former rebel speaks of uneasy peace
Posted by Jyoti Mansukhani on Tuesday, 8th January, 2013

“Prabhakaran is not dead!” exclaims Aarvar, with sheer confidence.

Aarav explains that Prabhakaran is probably hiding somewhere, either in Singapore or UK. He claims that Sri Lankan officials have yet to produce the LTTE leader’s death certificate, which proves that Prabhakaran is still alive.]

So until the death certificate is given india we can have a temporary ban on the burqa and niqab, lest every time some paranoid sinhalese see a short fat muslim woman covered from head to toe walks towards them, start becoming uneasy that prabha is coming towards them.

I see murder, rage,… in BBS thugs’eyes and their ugly faces (a product of evil thoughts, words and actions, not the skin deep).

It will be interesting to examine from any records available how many rogues have used this disguise. To enact law for what might happen in the background of “Religious Discrimination” smacks of racism. If there is a genuine problem in the future then the problem can be resolved by discussion and mutual agreement instead of the barbaric solution suggested.

“This is a good move any rouge can move any where with this cloth.Ban it immediately.”

The rogues in this island need no Burqa, they are happy and thriving shamelessly without it.

If anything men should be wearing Burqa to cover their ugly faces, product of their bad thoughts, words and actions.

Given that the men are capable of heinous crimes against women all women should wear Burqa to protect them from their men folks.

In fact one more layer of clothe could protect them from their potential rapists, including their husbands and fathers.

I support wearing Burqa. I support forcing the men to wear Burqa to cover their ugly faces.

I support the banning of thugs wearing saffron robe and admiring beautiful women in public.

Gautama Siddartha (c. 563–479 BC), the prince from present day Nepal who became the Buddha, ‘the Enlightened One,’ required his followers to isolate themselves from worldly life. The saffron robe worn by Buddhist monks was a badge which showed ordinary society that they had elected to leave its toils; the colour of this garment was the same as that used to dress condemned men on the day of execution.

Now you know what you are following for last 2500yrs.

      • 0
        0

Gauthama Buddha never required his followers to isolate themselves from worldly life.Ordained monks only were required to do so.Saffron was the colour of robes worn by most religious figures of that age and even now-hindu,jain etc-nothing to do with condemned men!

      Lion,

Are you the Mythological Lion of Monk Mahanama? Are you the grandfather of Vijaya? Just Curious. Did you check your DNA?

      Clothing Issues:

      1. What does the Constitution say about the fundamental right of the people to wear clothes? Not to wear clothes?

      2. Can a non-elected administrator, Gotabaya Rajapaksa, Unilaterally ban a particular type of clothing?

      3. What powers does the constitution give to administrators, as opposed to the parliament?

      4. Even if the state tries to implement a selective dress code, can it be challenged in the courts?

Anyway, we all know what is behind this all, Sinhala Buddhist Racism, the curse of Lanka, with no proof of Nirvana, Nibbana and Rebirth,

Burqa, Hijab & Niqab or anything else are fine. If it is free will of the woman or girl concerened. Religious freedom.

However, reality is very different in many Muslim domianted nations. Women and girls are forced into it. By social pressure and at times cruel vioelnce. There by restricting women’s role in progress of society. Often connservative uneducated (and educated) Muslim men enforce these things with a vengence on women.

That has to be banned. That is the real problem with Burqa, Hijab & Niqab.

PS: BBS has entirely different motivation in this debate.

ah yes, another homophobe. Lanka seems to have it all now…

You know, kayal, in normal “sri lankan traditions”, homosexuality is dealt with like everything else in this country- ignore it, put a temporary solution, and then turn around and hope the issue goes away. You should see the amount of suffering and problems caused by our so-called “society” forcing homosexuals to enter heterosexual marriages.

If someone is a homosexual, let him/her marry a person of their choice. After all, you don’t see the homosexuals coming and telling YOU who to marry…

For the sake of progressive society? A progressive society is marked by an allowance of freedom, Freedom to dress how they want to, to say what they want to and what not. I don’t agree with the burqa too but if what we are trying to be is a tolerant and an open minded country, freedom must be encouraged.

And also, if the absence of clothing marks progression, the veddas must be right up there running our economy right?

It makes me laugh – what is good for The Netherlands must be good for Sri Lanka too.

Netherlands have strong laws against racial vilification and Sri Lanka does not.

In Sri Lanka we have the continuing legacy of the white vans and The Netherlands do not.

In Sri Lanka we have a nepotistic government and Netherlands do not.

Netherlands have a free press and Sri Lanka has no press freedom.

In Sri Lanka saffron robed monks can lead hordes of brutal mobs to destroy property and places of worship and in the Netherlands they are are not allowed.
    https://www.colombotelegraph.com/index.php/video-the-fascist-monks-of-sri-lanka-part-2/

The police in Netherlands do not torture suspects but in Sri Lanka we do.

In Sri Lanka lawyers, doctors, police and the judiciary can collude to allow murder suspects to live life for the full and in the Netherlands they do not.

@ Lion are you trying to be a Comedian ? trying to amuse the readers of CT?

Why do rogues need to cover their faces ? when High ranking rime prevention officers are openly involved in Murder and robbing …

Do not be surprised with a country now we live in that has gone down the gutters may bring upon a situation in the future to eat your own words and may be you may end up locking your mothers, daughters and wife even your archie to protect them from the many perverts growing in numbers ,do you only read attacks on Muslims and not keep up with the rest of the happenings in Silly lanka?

Is a dress of extra modesty a crime? or perverts are annoyed that they can now more scan beautiful faces to plan their rapes?

This is a free country and clothing is ones own personal freedom of choice and nothing to do with religion, culture or anybody’s business, first hang high the crook and murders who commit crimes openly with no masks , before you start melding with people who are using whatever means they can to protect themselves from these perverts.

However what I see here is history reaping itself, some of you guys sold your mother country to the Portuguese,Dutch ,English and now you want to repeat it again I guess , next time whoever is behind you guys will ask you to send your women in G strings in public,,, wait till the casinos start and you will pay a bitter price ,you cowards you have no back borne to stop dirty entertainment like Casinos that will bring in enough crime that murder will become a every day morning news , a petty like the first cup of tea,, what you guys will do for petty few dollars is unthinkable and the venom that is so integral in some of you guys is so shameful that you would rather see the country robbed day and night ,women raped, people suffer from poverty ,country sold out to mafias and dangerous cartels ,who promote abductions ,Human trafficking for forced prostitution, drugs &Arms trafficking Loans shark operations and ultimate destruction of our preserved honorable culture.

No some of you guys have your brains located in the wrong place , you will not mind all this as long as the minorities are oppressed…Period that is the truth.

Sri Lank will one day cry tears of Blood. for the action of some stupid citizens ,I assure you.

your car ,your petrol go ahead and set it on flames.

    Hip hip hurray.

Great stuff, give it to em where it hurts them the most. Shallow thinkers. Living for today, as if there is no tomorrow. Even the half baked rogue monks are playing truant, and very soon will lay claim to the countries leadership. Already they are in disarray and claiming thugs and underworld imposters are on the loose. They cannot even identify friend from foe. Their clan will soon be like the pied piper who played the flute and made all the mesmerized rats to follow them to their fate and drowned.

Great comment. It reminds me the Famous Sinhala stories of How “Andarae ate sugar” and Famous “How Mahadena Mutta saved cow’s head”

The ever born Frogs do not want to know what is happening around the world, while cutting someone else’s suit according to their own body shape will serve nobody.

What the country need is a strong Disciplined man who could kick out all these leeches and parasites, thieves and drug dealers, Cheaters and liars.

Until we get rid of all these Parasites, cheaters, thieves and liars country will never flourish.

    Turkey 1923.

    Kamel Ataturk.

    Face should not be covered.

It appears that the Quran does Not require covering the face, requires to dress modestly. So, topless, not allowed.

The Wahhabis and Taliban-Deobandi have taken it to the extreme to impose their tribal customs, like in Wahhabi Saudi Arabia, to show the Mullah Hegemony. We have Buddhist Monk Hegemony in Lanka,

In Wahhabi Arabia, Women can’t drive. However, in 7th century, there were no cars and bikes. However, women rode the camels.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hijab

“Hijab” or “ḥijāb” (/hɪˈdʒɑːb/, /hɪˈdʒæb/, /ˈhɪ.dʒæb/ or /hɛˈdʒɑːb/;[1][2][3][4] Arabic: حجاب‎, pronounced [ħiˈdʒæːb] ~ [ħiˈɡæːb]) is a veil which covers the head which is particularly worn by a Muslim female beyond the age of puberty in the presence of non-mahram (non-related) adult males. It can further refer to any head, face, or body covering worn by Muslim women or men that conforms to a certain standard of modesty. It not only refers to the physical body covering, but also embodies a metaphysical dimension, where al-hijab refers to “the veil which separates man or the world from God”.[5] Hijab can also be used to refer to the seclusion of women from men in the public sphere. Most often, it is worn by Muslim women as a symbol of modesty, privacy, and morality. According to the Encyclopedia of Islam and the Muslim World, modesty in the Qur’an concerns both men’s and women’s gaze, gait, garments, and genitalia.”[6] Although the Qur’an stresses modesty, it does not specifically require women to keep their heads or faces covered. In fact, the Qur’an never explicitly uses the term hijab in reference to body veiling in any context, instead utilizing the words khimār (خمار) and jilbāb (جلباب), not hijab. Hijab or Hejab refers to The Rules of covering up. It never references the specific item or items of clothing used to cover up.

First ban Casino Joints, hi-class brothel houses, night clubs and Kasippu joints in Sri Lanka.

Also our women, specially Sinhala women have to wear Burqa And Niqab in Middle East. Also they have to eat Halal Foods there.

Therefore BBS and Gota should first ban our women, specially Sinhala women going to Middle east to work as house maids.

Europeans don’t send their women to ME to work as house maids.

Also BBS should encourage Gota to close down all our Buddhist Temples in Christian Western countries. There are no Buddhist temples in Middle East.So follow suite.

If do something, do it with some sense. Not silly jokes.

I seriously cant understand whats the problem here. Do these monks prefer bikini wearing chicks over women who are covering their bodies. This is ridiculous. We were born as Sri Lankans and we have the right to practice the religion. this country has gone to the dogs and they are ruling the country now. No one talks about the damage done to the culture by other activities.

Why only Burqa and Niqab ? any one have right to dress what they wish. Islam is the only religion says how male dress and how female dress. BBS or Rjapaksha regime have no right to order on Muslims dress code. Drunken Gananasara ask their followers to be in nude or topless we have no problem. this drunken Theros like to see their sisters and mothers in nude? but we Muslims have a tradition our religion ask us not only how to dress also how to live. Islam is not mixed religion or it is not a philosophy of a person. Allah says “Lakum deenukum waliyadeen” you fellow you religion we have fellow our religion. let us to do it. we ask the Buddhist to fellow what Buddha says in Pansil.let us to live according to Holy Quran what our Prophet says.

Mashaallah..This is really important thing to the country like sri lanka. specially we like to see our Muslim sisters living peacefully and liberally without covering all over body. they are human and they like to live in open world. Don’t you feel shame covering all over body from the black clothes in the hot weather..

Dear Muslim sisters. Please sign the petition. Stay free….

      Ricardo,

Muslim women choose the Nikab. No one forces them to do so. Please don’t assume that just because you perceive the Niqab to restrictive, Muslim women agree with you. I can assure you that Muslim women think it keeps them safe from ogling, and prying eyes. Want proof? Read the Guardian. White Western women who have converted say they feel safer and respected wearing the Niqab.

You guys need to stop pontificating and mind your own business. How Muslim women want to dress is there business.

Can you imagine how puerile you guys are? Why don’t you get into frock from tomorrow. I don’t see any chivalry in our men any more.

There is a nice word for people who poke their noses into women’s affairs and its starts with a “P” :)

Muslim sisters ‘liberally without covering all over body’ – can you explain ?

Of course, they are human – and where is this open world you are talking about ?

Why should they feel ashamed for covering their body in black or in white ? They are not naked !

Don’t you feel sorry for the lawyers who are required to wear a black suit in this hot weather ?

Do u know what is mentioned about dress cord for women in Bible? Do u see the dress of nuns?
have u ever read the bible in ur life? as being a christian (i Assume).
The Quran says women should cover the body except hand and face. That means women wear modesty.
I ashamed on you, as u are being a christian you don’t know about your religion. Go and read the bible from today……….Unless just listening to your catholic preach like BBS.

Muslims have been taking advantage of the religious tolerance of non-Muslim countries for years and demanding that people comply with ‘their’ laws and customs. If they want to adhere to Muslim rules and regulations let them go and live in an Islamic country!

Sloan, what can we Muslims say to you. You seem to be leading a rather miserable life not knowing what is bothering you.

You said Islam is intolerant. I asked you for proof in the Sri Lankan context. You dither.

Now you are saying you are grateful that the spread of Islam is in check in Sri Lanka.

Your fear of Islam is unfounded and your reactions are similar to other Islamophobes, who seem not to know why they hate Muslims and yet are willing to make fools of themselves when challenged.

We can only pity folks like you.

Do hate less today! Please. :)

          @ Stewart Sloan,
Quran says forcing anyone to accept Islam is prohibited. So, It’s your choice. Muslims have the responsibility to convey the truth. It’s your choice to learn and decide it. You are free to follow any religion nor not to believe in GOD. No body can not force you to follow.

So, Dr. Dilantha Withanage wanted to do what European (Netherland, Norway,France etc) racist wanted in Sri Lanka. Because they have tried their best in their own countries and failed to implement it. Even the law has been implemented but no body cares about it. So.. it is completely failure in Europe. How much an anti Islamic organizations are active in Europe that much people started converting to Islam….Majority of women have been converted.
If you ban face covering in Sri Lanka, even a single Muslim woman will not face any problem on that….but you attempt to violate human rights (woman rights) in Sri Lanka.
The idea is not bad but it was an old story in Europe and it was unsuccessful. So, Dr. Dilantha think something new as you are an Electronic Engineer who has completed MSc in Georgia (Former USSR). And of cause we will give you fullest support if you do something good for our nation and country. And it has been recorded 20% of children are malnutrition in Sri Lanka. Think about the future about young generation…If you really love your mother land.

Actually I do agree with Lion, that we should ban Burka in Sri Lanka because any rouge can move with that cloth. Also I am sure that Lion will agree that we should ban “Saatakaya” as well because biggest thieves in Sri Lanka are moving freely wearing saatakaya and one of them is ruling the country. in my opinion they are the biggest threat to the nation. Also I am thinking whether to suggest to ban “kaha Sivru” because Criminals like Gaanu 5 Naanasaara, Akmeemana Dayaratna also take cover under “Kaha Sivra” and they are the biggest threat to the Buddhism.

First of all who is Gota ? can someone point out how many incidents like this has happened in the Srilankan history ? and how many similar incidents have happened wearing the yellow robe ? currently we can see so many thugs and frauds misusing it, example the famous drunkard nanasra
we had no issues when the war was going on, but why now ? the BBS is paid huge some of money to make Muslims carry weapons until then they aint going to stop,
