Gotabaya Rajapaksa – War Criminal, Coward Or A President-In-Waiting?

By Muhammed Fazl

Muhammed Fazl

Muhammed Fazl

With international pressure building up and a successful prosecution taking shape against him, the Secretary to the Ministry of Defence, Mr. Gotabaya Rajapaksa cashing in on the wave of success of his brother President Mahinda rajapaksa in local elections, is rushing to seek legitimacy and public support for a top job that could fall vacant in the near future. The sudden decision would have risen either from insecure complexities or as a precautionary measure of having immunity usually granted to serving heads and deputy heads of States against possible convictions in an International War Crimes Tribunal. It is also no secret that Mr. Gotabaya harbors great ambitions to fill the shoes of the President in the event the position becomes vacant, either due to an unexpected death of the latter or due to a ruling by the Supreme Court arising from a successful petition against the President for seeking an illegal third term. As for the legitimacy of the third term, only the voter should have the right to approve changes to the Constitution. By not allowing thieves, rapists, sports stars and actors to sustain a despotic regime, thanks only to their popularity, the crossover MP’s should have no mandate to vote for President Rajapakse’s third term, especially when they had hoodwinked and convinced the ignorant voters into believing that they would act as opposition members in the parliament! We as a right-thinking nation cannot allow 150 plus individuals to hold the nation of 20 plus million as hostages!

Believing it would be unfair to the readers as well as to Mr. Gotabaya if the title of this article is not explained, I hope the following will shed more light on this elusive and the most-feared character of our time.

Gotabaya

Gotabaya

Living in a country where anyone charged of a crime is guilty until proven otherwise, there are serious allegations and over-whelming evidences of war crimes committed by Sri Lankan armed forces on direct orders from the Defense Secretary Mr. Gotabaya Rajapaksa. While he claims credit for coordinating and directing operations and winning the war, wouldn’t it be equally right for him to own up to any breach of ‘rules of engagement’ occurring especially at the last stages of the war? And yes, your guess would be good as mine.

Having been appointed Defense Secretary in 2005, the soon-to-be-super rich Mr. Gotabaya devised a plan to cut the ‘middle men’ when procuring arms for the forces and registered a company under the name of Lanka Logistics.  However noble it may sound, it was not to be so since Mr. Gotabaya became ‘middle man’ himself! Understandably, it was not fair to ask questions about arms procurements during times of war for fear of the enemy having a head-start should they come to know of the types of weapons and technologies purchased. But with LTTE pretty much buried for good and five years after the war has ended, shouldn’t the public be made aware of the types of weapons and at what costs it was purchased? For accountability issues and for purpose of audit and good governance, shouldn’t the government also table all related documents which in turn could also clear the good name of individuals involved in procurements?

The widely reported MIG aircraft deal in 2006 stank so much of corruption at the highest levels, that it also took the life of the famous son-of the-soil Lasantha Wickrematunge and exiled many others. As a mark of respect to the slain editor of The Sunday Leader, I will publish the webpage link that which explains the story in detail and as a reminder,

With Mahinda Rajapaksa government backed owners controlling the editorial board of the ‘The Sunday Leader’, the defamation case brought by Mr. Gotabaya against the same newspaper over the same story is now a foregone conclusion. I could only pity the TEC evaluation committee and General Fonseka for being pawns and so gullible in a ‘get-rich’ game where only the Rajapakse clan know how to win.

Apart from questions that Mr. Gotabaya needs to answer over corrupt procurement practices, serious questions arises over injuries and deaths suffered by government forces possibly due to inferior defense systems/arms and aircrafts. Human lives are priceless and however bitter it may be, the truth need to be told to the grieving families if it differs from the original version. While believing that nobody is above the law, I find myself in ‘no man’s land’ waiting for the ‘nation of cowards’ to open the can of worms!

As for Mr. Gotabaya’s explanation on Lanka Logistics and his Rakna Aracksha Lanka Ltd. (RALL) being ‘government owned’, his modus operandi is now public knowledge after the expose of multi-million USD agreements/understandings with government henchmen owned businesses where the profit sharing basis is skewed in certain illegal ways and where the local law enforcement officials fear to tread to investigate any kind of irregularities!

Excerpts from interviews given by Mr. Gotabaya to BBC soon after the war, followed by questions that would NEVER be answered;

“Betraying a country is a crime and it is treason and will hang Sarath Fonseka should the General testify in an independent war crimes investigation”

If betraying one’s country is treason, shouldn’t Mr. Gotabaya’s punishment be ‘death by hanging’?

“I am not worried about war crimes allegations”

Then why hide like a rat and a coward and not be amongst ‘men of honor’?

Dissension against the war is treason”

Then I guess suppression of independent media would be justified, is it?

“Investigations WILL NOT bring reconciliation nor does the public want it”

How and when did victims or their surviving kith and kin give the right to Mr. Gotabaya to speak on behalf of them? And to set the records straight, EVERY Tamilian in this country and every right thinking individual, irrespective of what community they belong to, would certainly lobby for an independent investigation, provided it is safe to do so!

Thank you and God bless you too. As per my religion, life goes on after I leave earth and martyrdom gets me the best deal in the life hereafter!

“The man you write about ended a 30 year reign of terror by the LTTE”

If you believe this you will believe anything.

“What have you done for your country ?”

Perhaps Fazl Muhammed refrained from committing war crimes.

“As per my religion, life goes on after I leave earth and martyrdom gets me the best deal in the life hereafter!”

I think you need to grow up. You may be mature in body and spirit but I think you are still a Peter Pan within. Immature is how I would describe you.Dont get goaded into making irresponsible statements through the ‘encouraging’ comments of many readers on this blog. Most are cowards and want someobody else to do the dirty for them. Time you realized that nothing is going to change and that there is no point in unnecessarily sticking out your neck for a people who are not worth their salt. Im saying this because you seem to be such a young lad.I admire your guts and think you have a great future. So, dont jeopardize it. Time you cooled it, Machan.

            @Ceylonese
Of course, I have a SMALL MIND. But, Id like to see you with the BIG MIND come out bravely and say the stuff that Fazl said BEFORE he said it all. People like you are cowards who hide behind bogus names and wait for others to do the dirty for them while they themselves keep their hands tied and their mouths shut. Much like the many shameless CEYLONESE (an apt name youve chosen)who sit at home and enjoy the money sent to them every month by their poor womenfolk who clean the toilets of their Arab masters and are in turn treated as worse than slaves.I do hope that young Fazl sees through the hoax that people like you are spinning. Come into my web said the spider.

A coward by definition will never fight for what he believes. He would rather die beaten up. Go and look up the Islamic history that is if you are true to your name. Cowards are a disgrace to a nation and to their belief. Muslims fight for their blood, honour and property, not hide behind their women folks. Learn to respect people who stand for justice that is, if you are man enough.

BTW Ceylonese is a pen name to protect the identity in a public forum such as this. We do not judge people by their names rather the substance they write.

Many of us hide behind annonymous usernames for our own protection but the writer to fearlessly go on with his bluntly articulated pieces of writings are to me – somewhat naive and dangers before him are invitable leading him to get whitevanned.

Abductions of brutal kind are existing even today. And all these are proved to be run by state. Please read below.

Nobody woudl raise the question why Wanathamulla sunil was abducted for few hours and released him then. From what sunil had explained, he was not aware of where he had been brought to… those who had not the chance to reutrn from such disspearaences failed to add the valuable remarks. Anyway, these abductors had assured to set Sunil free – giving a proving them as nobody else but a squad run by the state.

‘I admire your guts and think you have a great future’ – You came across of Fazl’s guts because you read this article.

As you suggests if Fazl Mohammed is ‘mature’ you wouldn’t know that Fazl has a great future?

Fazl says ‘as per my religion…..’ – So you think he is a Peter Pan kid?

Tisaranee G is writing similar brave articles very often.
Have you ever warned her IMTIAZ?

Pardon me, should I say ‘What a coward you are’.

It takes a lot of courage and faith to stand up and expose tyranny. Life on earth is a fleeting moment. Practising Muslims strive to achieve Eternal Salvation.

(Say): I (Muhammed) am commanded only to serve the Lord of this land which He hath hallowed, and unto Whom all things belong. And I am commanded to be of those who surrender (unto Him), (The Noble Quran 27:91) And to recite the Qur’an. And whoso goeth right, goeth right only for (the good of) his own soul; and as for him who goeth astray – (Unto him) say: Lo! I am only a warner. (The Noble Quran 27:92) And say: Praise be to Allah Who will show you His portents so that ye shall know them. And thy Lord is not unaware of what ye (mortals) do. (The Noble Quran 27:93)

Leave out what Wahhabi and Salafi jihsdis are doing in Syria, Iraq and many other Islamic countries right now, we have seen with our own eyes what you guys and your ACJU have done to ‘MSM Abdullah, (RAH)’ and his Sufi followers and their mosques and their properties in Sri Lanka. Google that name anyone can read about it in the web.

And this egalitarian writer Fazl Muhammed never ever wrote a word about it.

Last time I checked, Colombo was NOT a safe heaven! I was not trying to preach my religion, but was simply trying to remind people that they should not fear another mortal and if at all, only fear the God above.

As for taking the struggle one notch above, I only tried explaining the connection between an imminent death when struggling for justice vis-a-viz religion (mine) and why one should not fear to raise a voice or a finger….

Hey guys I believe Gota has all aggressive potential to become

srilanka ‘s Kim Jong-un (North korean young leader). Recalling the way Kim executed his own uncle few months ago, GOTA would do the job for his future. Only advantage would be then he could remove MR the Screwd from the rule paving the way people to find their next leader. This is a small task for Gota. Then we the people can remove Gota – since almost everyone hates him behind the curtain.

In every war there is profiteering………

Food for Oil in Iraq………… Was the UN deal straight?
Who profitted from it? Ask the then Secy General Kofi Annan……..

    Ask Oliver North…….
    Ask Haliburton…………

Whether LL or the MIGs, the job was done. No more MIGs…….

Mohamed Fazl, open up a page in your 4th attempt after the war & LL activities of Gota…….. That is more apporpriate. Lets see what you have instead of the past we are awareas they are spoken of every gettogethers after a few drinks and are stale.

Lets have new material from you instead of beating a dead leather.

Prophet Mohomad was a businessman who wanted to expand his business, SO, he founded a new religion. Otherwise, he had THIRTY wives and some of his brides were children, a crime that is punished by putting in the jail. but, you muslims worship him.

On the other hand, Gotabaya Rajapakse did what he must do in order to save his own country from Tamil terrorists.

I wish he will do the same thing to muslim extremists too.

    Not to worry.

Karachi thing will soon come to Beruwala, Ampara, Puttlam, etc.

UK govt. should open its eyes to Jihad groups based in the UK.

I have sent them the details of a few Jihadists from SL.

It’s the dream of the BBS,JHU to have Gota as the Pres. His ascendency will be over his brothers and nephews, n the anointed crown prince.

Let cards fall as they may, in the meantime his cheer leaders will take turns hammering the Muslims and the Christians.

He is well placed not to be the Pres but just like in Pakisthan and Iran be the wedge between the Holy Monks and the Pretense of Democracy.

Oh! how much he is learning from the Muslim States.

Hurrah to my Motherland. Truly, it’s best the best of times.

    Dear Readers,

Please excuse my unorthodox and my blunt style of writing. I serve no masters nor I am funded. I belong to no political party or movement and I no seek popularity or recognition. I write what I see, hear, feel and what I understand. I seek attention ONLY to the contents of what I write and for the causes I believe in. In Sri Lanka, we have a habit of using abusive language or getting personal with another when their opinions differ from ours. This is not right. We need to cultivate a culture where ONLY issues/contents are discussed on public forums and not questioning writers/commentators or their motives!

Politics, standing up for what is right or fighting for justice should not be a domain of a few. The following is copied from my wall page on FB and which I wrote few months ago…,

I as a Muslim have a duty towards self, parents & family, society, country and towards the world at large… I have lived in this world and i have seen a lot… Death is imminent and certain… We all are travelers in transit in this world. Only our good deeds helps us in our ‘future’… No one gets out of this world alive and all our wealth and our positions in the society don’t mean a thing if we don’t learn to share it or lookout for the other. Not everybody in this world is fortunate and some of them are weak or made victims by the fortunate and the powerful…. I only give voice to the voiceless and give my hand to the fallen. I get pleasure in seeing a smile on the face of the downtrodden and the oppressed… I find contentment in helping the unjustly dealt ones to find justice…. In short, I just want to die as a human and die doing my share towards humanity!

I Believe Mr. Gotabaya is a visionary, a strategist and I am also pretty sure he loves this country. But problems arises WHEN HE THINKS IT IS OK TO STEAL a vast fortune to enrich himself and to kill or maim anyone who stands in his way to achieve his ideologies or warped beliefs. I give him credit for his unrelenting war effort and for building roads among others. But make no mistake – He was one of the decision makers in beating the tigers alright, but he DID NOT bring the peace nor he waged a just war! IF MR. GOTABAYA BROUGHT PEACE TO THIS COUNTRY, WHY ARE WE STILL LIVING IN A STATE OF FEAR?? Is it not evident from the comments above alone cautioning me against dire consequences? To be honest, I felt much safer when LTTE was running amok!

Henchmen of the government and businessmen profiteering from illegal government deals may defend MR & the clan, and the ignorant and the blindly patriotic masses can elect them too… but that will not wash away the ‘blood stains’ nor the ‘loan sharks’ (China) will waive off our liabilities. Passionate speeches about a war which ended five years ago and bragging about how it was won will not fill an empty stomach nor it can sustain a developing country. On the contrary, tactics used at the end of war is definitely counter-productive to a just society and it has also given rise to a biased judiciary and state of lawlessness. I believe the need to elaborate on it does not exist anymore here.

I was brought up in a family where I was given cookies for good behavior and punished for wrong doings. Guilty or not, if a 4-star General in the army (who was equally instrumental in the war victory) can be put on trial and convicted too, why are we or the government not trying Mr. Gotabaya for the atrocities as alleged and for financial irregularities concerning LL and RALL? Forget the legal proceedings, why not even question ‘the larger than life’ figure? An investigation is NOT AN AUTOMATIC CONVICTION! People lost lives. Casualty figures (as alleged) at the last stages of the war (in a period of few weeks the most) matched the total casualty figures in the entire 26 years running through April 2009! There are eye witnesses for war crimes committed, evidences, videos and confessions by serving and ex-military personnel and the only thing lacking is a ‘court of law’ and a prosecution arm!

We the lesser mortals need not live in fear when it is Mr. Gotabaya who has sleepless nights. A white van has a maximum of 13 seats and it cannot accommodate all right-thinking and fearless voices in this country (please try not taking it literally). People in this country should remember that this is THEIR COUNTRY and THEIR LIFE & FUTURE that this joker is playing with!! Life is a game of ‘Russian roulette’ for some at times where an actual shot will be fired and a game of chess at other times where a move is made only after the opponent makes his/her move! And from where I come, two can play the game…

We are in this current predicament ONLY ‘cos nobody volunteered to tie the bell on the cat’s neck. I try doing my share and no matter what, I will continue to be the ‘pied piper’ till my last breath… God willing! Mr. Gotabaya can send his goons or his ‘white van’ and prove his ‘coward’ credentials or face up to the music like a real hero and be known as a ‘man of honor’!

I will extend him an olive branch should he chooses to take it. I can help him overcome all his troubles, provided he does what is best for the country. But as history has shown us, seldom sanity prevails in their corridors when consumed by power and ill-gotten wealth!

    “Check! It is your move”…

“To be honest, I felt much safer when LTTE was running amok!”, Fazl Muhammed.

That bit of writing alone shows how much built in venom Fazl has in him against MR and this government and Sinhalese. Leave out butchering of 32 monks and surrendered 600 policemen, bugger has completely forgotten how Tamil tigers had chopped hundreds of Muslims to pieces while praying in a mosque and how tens of thousands were chased out of Jaffna with no notice.

          Dear Mechanic,

Wish your comments would be balanced at least once in your life time. Anyways, my ‘venom’ (as per your definition) against the MR is equal in measure to that against KP, Karuna (especially for the massacre of 600 surrendered policeman), Daya Master, perpetrators of crimes on both sides in 1987/1988 JVP rebellion etc… I regret not being able to write about it all in one article. This article is about one person and I suggest you to discuss/comment about WHAT I HAVE WRITTEN and NOT about what I have NOT written!

          Thank you

Mr. Gotabaya is the very reason why we are on the path to communal strife. I say this with conviction due to the security apparatus not putting the foot down against racist and hate crimes by sections of the majority against minorities and for the very fact that he playing the ‘patron saint’ for the BBS!… May be it has not registered to him yet, but a combination of Muslim and Tamil resistance would be more than what he bargained for.

Mistakes and errors of judgement are made by humans. I just hope Mr. Gotabaya does not create a monster that he cannot deal with. Also the next time things get heated up, i am pretty sure that USA will NOT be a safe heaven for him no more….

And did I here someone say ‘he brought peace to the country’?
