Hoole’s Car Searched At Every Checkpoint; Pro-Gota Newspaper Makes False Claims About Daughter’s Quarantine

Member of the Elections Commission Prof S. Ratnajeevan H. Hoole has expressed concerns that could be forces at work trying to sabotage election matters by denying the Commission its quorum of three, after false rumours that his daughter had not been quarantined since returning to Sri Lanka from the UK.

Prof. S. Ratnajeevan H. Hoole

On Wednesday the pro-Gotabaya Island newspaper carried a news report that Hoole and his daughter were kicked out of the Commission premises due to a protest by staff at the Commission. The staff had claimed Prof Hoole’s daughter, had not been subject to quarantine and had been asked to self-quarantine in Jaffna. According to the newspaper report the EC premises had been “disinfected” later.

Chairman of the EC Mahinda Deshapriya had later claimed the whole episode was a misunderstanding. Hoole presented a certificate signed by Army Chief Shavendra Silva and Director General Health Services Anil Jaasinghe, confirming that Elilini Hoole had undergone 14 days of quarantine at the Jetwing Blue.

According to Prof. Hoole his daughter paid for her quarantine, a sum of Rs 175,000. She had never been told to self-quarantine he clarified.

More disturbing events had occurred when Hoole’s vehicle was stopped and searched at every checkpoint from Puttalam to Jaffna. Dr Hoole said that the police and military had the number plate of his car along with instructions to search the vehicle. The passing of Hoole’s car had been recorded at every checkpoint which he said was not the norm.

According to Hoole, the Chairman of the Commission had later apologized. While at the Commission, Hoole said he told Mahinda Deshapriya that his daughter had undergone paid quarantine – therefore he asserts the chairman was aware of what had happened.

However despite his Personal Assistant to Deshapriya had called Hoole saying Tuesday’s meeting was cancelled adding that Hoole and his driver had to be quarantined for two weeks. The Chairman later said it was not necessary, according to Dr Hoole.

He describes the situation at the Commission when he was last present in this manner:

“When I returned from lunch, my office was empty, the few I met seemed ready to jump out of the second floor. My office had been sprayed and all doors left open. Except for one man, the rest were gone. It was most embarrassing for me.

I returned to Jaffna promptly. I wonder if this is a ploy to sabotage election matters by forcing me into quarantine to break the 3-person quorum rule.

I thought it was a minor matter till I saw this morning’s Island.”

We publish below the Hoole’s letter to the Island in full:

Please refer to today’ s Island: http://www.island.lk/index.php?page_cat=article-details&page=article-details&code_title=222517

Elilini Hoole’s quarantine cirtificate

My daughter underwent quarantine at JetwingBlue and paid Rs. 175,000 for it. When she was released the army after testing her gave her the attached certificate signed by Shavendra Silva and Jasinghe and never told her to self-quarantine. The certificate said that she “underwent the necessary quarantine process.”

The Editor of the Island, Prabath Sahabandu never checked with me to verify that my daughter had not undergone quarantine. I hope he will issue a correction after portraying me as irresponsible.

All the way to Jaffna from Puttalam and after I was stopped at every check point where they had my number plate with instructions to check our car. One policeman at Omanthai apologetically told me he did not know what he was to check for. Unlike the norm, they recorded the passing of our car at most check-points.

The chairman who never spoke to me on this later apologized and said it was a misunderstanding. However, on my way to lunch, I spoke to him and told him my daughter had paid Rs. 175,000 so he knew that she had been quarantined. But his PA telephoned me saying today’s meeting “is going to be cancelled” and the driver and I needed to be quarantined for 2 weeks. Later the chairman said this was not necessary

When I returned from lunch, my office was empty, the few I met seemed ready to jump out of the second floor. My office had been sprayed and all doors left open. Except for one man, the rest were gone. It was most embarrassing for me.

I returned to Jaffna promptly. I wonder if this is a ploy to sabotage election matters by forcing me into quarantine to break the 3-person quorum rule.

I thought it was a minor matter till I saw this morning’s Island.

      Dear Rajash,
      .
I’m pretty sure that I also said somewhere on Colombo Telegraph that there is a definite danger of Prof. Jeevan Hoole meeting with some mysterious accident. I spent quite some time looking for it; else this comment would have come on a little sooner.
      .
Courage is not an absence of fear. It is a determined overcoming of fear, pushing it aside because we don’t want to be ruled by it.
      .
I think that Jeevan has taught us, Sri Lankans, what is meant by courage.
      .
I’m not given to delving into the supernatural at times like this. However, I think that we must all express our gratitude to Professor Hoole for standing up for the rights of all the people of this country.
      .
However, in Professor Hoole’s case his deep commitment to Christianity must surely be upholding him.

Gotler, keep your blood drenched dirty hands off Prof. Hoole. He is the only sensible person in SL in charge of election matters. As a Sinhalese I’m ashamed of the two Sinhala members of the EC who are not serving the nation or the people. They are serving Rajapaksas.

what else can one expect from an inferior swabasha mob who feel uncomfortable in the presence of a high ranking Tamil and his daughter who had paid the much sought after quarantine fee at the concerned hotel in Negombo?
    =
as I have stated before even though I have more Sinhalese as friends than my own kind, I find these persons to feel inferior whenever they have to mingle with us.
    =
can anyone please enlighten me on this much-exposed human-made shortcoming of weakness on the part of the majority population of this country.?
    =
most of these swabasha folk do not have 2 cents legally to spend on whatever needed to be done and as according to their standards they would never have expected the father cum daughter team to do the right thing.
    =
in the good old days when the professor had his quarrels with Velu Annai and was dancing the kawadi with mahindan rajapuka, I for one did not applaud his conduct but with his recent behaviour, I have shamelessly have had to a right about-turn.
what a cheap tactic of stopping and checking the car at every checkpoint.?
these buggers are too thick-skinned to eat humble pie.?
damn fools always shitting and sitting on their tiny gadol granite brains.

This clearly shows that Deshapriya is a Govt Stooge who is trying to block Dr Hoole being present at the meetings as the democratic acts of Dr Hoole is a threat to the militarized government. Its sad to see such a person being checked at every check point and Shavendra should take the blame for his illegal act.

Totally a brutal murderer is now the head of this government. Even when the former Editor of Sunday leader Lasantha was brutally murddered by the same regime, majority of Sinhala and Sinhala media’s did not bother. What did Lasantha did? He bravely voiced against corruption. The choice of Sinhala people was to celebrate the murder. Hoole is now an enemy of that regime because he speaks about the rights of the Sinhala people and Sinhala Nation. Unfortunately, majority Sinhala people do not like like their nation or Lord Buddha’s teachings. They like illegal murderers. It is their democracy.

‘Quarantine’ means 40 day separation at pandemic times. Sri Lanka can’t be too careful about the need to quarantine all arrivls from abroad, especially people with a century old dubious foreign connections.
    /
As to the checking of the car from Puttalam to Jaffna, it is understandable that the authorities wanted to make sure that the vehicle proceeded to the address given in the documents. Nothing strange there.
    /
Hoole can’t expect special treatment just because he is in this all powerful (so he seems to think!) EC position.
    /
EC staff needs to be congratulated for being alert, and Government ought to be applauded for enforcing the law without favour or fear.

Harassment at the hands of government goons in nothing new in paradise. This is part of the great tradition of making life unbearable for undesirable people who have dared to dissent. From the ordinary policeman on the road, to the Kachcheri clerk to high officials in institutions, abuse of power to quash whistle-blowers reeks of very low values that are utterly contemptible.

The perfect example of fascism and a police state. This is only the beginning.

You step out of line and say anything against the fascists, they will make life hell for you.
This is also a warning for others who may think of doing the same.

Sri Lankan modayas wanted the last lot out because of corruption and incompetence,
but look what they ended up with. At least with the last lot people speak more freely, racism was far less, and the threat of being killed or mysteriously disappearing was not there. We have a long way to go, and the signs are not looking good for the country.

In order to clear the air on this matter, I spoke to a doctor in the public health sector in Jaffna. He told me that at quarantine centres, there is a chance of cross infection from other infected persons after an inmate is healed, so that this inmate may be a carrier after being released from the centre, as they found from selected tests. The chances are deemed small.
In the case of my niece, she was not a corona infected person to start with. In the hotel where she was quarantined she spent her entire time in a room in total isolation, so that the chances of cross infection were almost nil. A PCR test was done on her last Friday and she was released last Monday morning.
At her release someone from the army medical division explained to her that just because the PCR is negative did not mean that she should be careless. They certainly made it clear there was a risk. But what they said is be careful and did not say anything about further quarantine.
But on Tuesday (next day after being released), following the issue being blown up at the Election Commission, a doctor called and explained to my niece about being home quarantined.

Thank you, Dr Rajan Hoole (not, of course, a Doctor of Medicine), for checking with a doctor and giving us an honest evaluation of whatever risk some may claim that your niece posed.
      .
You have displayed truthfulness of a level that few in this country ever think of adhering to.
      .
Of course, there is a minute risk in doing anything at all. That is something that Rajan will know as a Mathematician.
      .
I hope that all readers will pay special attention to what he has written. Only a person who is extra concerned about his responsibility towards others could have written as he has. The typical Sri Lankan practice is to start saying that there is no risk whatever, and start abusing all those around.
      .
To me, the account that I see before me, and the comments, demonstrate how much concern the Hoole family has for others. Having said that, however, it is time for Prof. Jeevan Hoole to go to even greater lengths to take precautions to ensure that nobody is given a chance to mischievously embroil him in more trouble.
      .
All this tragically reminded me of this Mahesh Niranjan short story:

        .

        .
Do you think a responsible person will bring a relative from quarantine directly to a government office..?

          ,
I’m surprised myself that Hoole brought his daughter to the Election Secretariat. About that, I think that you are right to make a polite inquiry – polite, please, as I am doing right now.
          .
Things like this are cheat jibes – “Works as a No Election Commissioner”.
          .
We want elections on a set date, and after all are provided with a level playing field. I don’t want to get into an endless debate here. those issues have already been discussed – and there still are things to be discussed. I’m not going to do it here. a waste of time. all will be forgotten, with hardly five people reading.

        Dear Sinhala Man,
        .
Hope you are keeping well. Yes Prof. Hoole is fearless and great by every means. He has been representing our silent voice. Let s hope and wish the best for him at this highly critical turning point of srilanken politics. Uneducated masses would always interpret the situation in favor of their malicious politicians.
        .
Former govt as rulers warned the people not once thousand times, but people s stupidity brought them back – so the consequences are becoming clear today. I think locals will fall from frying pan to the fire in the days to come, if no loans would be passed to srilanka as had been before. If the one and only allies with current govt would remain, – chinese, the situation would be really dangerous. Chiense are blood suckers of the developing world today – their investment injection has spread inflations in black africa.

        Dear kali,
        .
I think that the questions Pasqual has posed are fair enough.
        .
I feel that Gota’s American Citizenship has now got renounced w.e.f. April 2020. It looks as though nobody was sure that this was going to happen when his nomination was accepted. It should have been rejected. Too late now.
        .
Therefore, the fault lies with the 34 other candidates. Hoole did all that he could; he had to play only the role of umpire. However, just twelve days after the elections, on the 28th of November 2019, Hoole came up with this expose.
        .
        https://www.colombotelegraph.com/index.php/was-the-presidential-election-free-and-fair-when-colombo-returning-officer-called-sajith-premadasa-the-son-of-a-donkey-asks-prof-hoole/
        .
Why didn’t you support Hoole at that point? These pseudonyms make it difficult to pin down responsibility.
        .
All 34 candidates let Hoole and the entire country down. Ranil Wickremasinghe’s long drawn out selfishness was also to blame.
        .
Sajith got only my Third Preference – so let me know what you seriously think about where we went wrong.
        .
And could we please all start writing more responsibly? What is “Sinkalam”? It is only mildly provocative, but don’t end up identifying something more provocative to escape yourself.

*** What is the problem here stupid. The Sri Lankan Ambassodor to UK passed on £700, 000 to you ( you might say at my expense) for provate Eye Treatment in USA which was available allbeit substandard.

*** Go through the Sri Lankan record you will see both UNP & SLPP ministers using Governme resources running into billions for personal use. LIARS

        Dear Helios,
        .
Are you happy that there is a good deal of ethnic tension still in this country after a 30-year Civil War? Don’t you realise that most analysts everywhere in the world blame it more on the Sinhalese than on the Tamils? Of course, there are people on both sides of the divide who are to blame, but certainly not the Hooles.
        .
Get this clear, please. The Rajan Hoole whom you have addressed is my age, and my classmate. Why don’t you check? There are about five brothers in the family, but these are the two who are well known, and there are Wikipedia articles on both. The Wikipedia article on him is not one that has been written by him (or approved), but it gives you enough facts.
        .

It is good that I checked. He has been at a University, so he probably has a first degree. It’s not only the Present Government that does this – I have seen Ranil Wickremasinghe described as “Dr” whether by himself, or by others I’m not sure. Certainly, I remember that he went to Australia and (when he was Prime Minister, so I blame him) was given an Honorary PhD with great fanfare by a University – I think that it was Deakin. Why haven’t I checked? Not a huge issue.
        .
To get back to Dr Rajan Hoole, he never was a Professor, and for that all of us Sri Lankans ought to be ashamed of ourselves. It was for us that he has done this! He was in hiding for fifteen years (almost entirely in Sri Lanka – I don’t know all the details). The greatest danger to him was the LTTE. They murdered Dr Rajani Thiranagama (nee Rajasingham, her widower, Thayapalan Thiranagama is still around).

          SM,

On the issue at hand, there is a lot of fear and suspicion about the virus, especially when people come in from foreign countries, so some may overreact. Here in the US, many Asian American medical personnel are facing hostility and racism from Americans , who tell them that they eat snakes and have bad habits that brought the virus in the first place. They are being told to go back to China even when they were born here or the Philippines, South Korea, Vietnam, Taiwan, Malaysia, etc.

Even as they take big risks in helping patients who are infected, the patients are spitting on them or telling them to find another doctor to treat them; when told there is no other doctor or nurse, they sometimes leave the emergency clinic altogether without getting any treatment. Given such things happening in a supposedly ‘advanced’ country like the US, I think both sides of this debate in SL need to take a deep breath and calm down.

“To get back to Dr Rajan Hoole, he never was a Professor….”

I think he did teach Math at the Univ. of Jaffna. He had to be in hiding and was out of the university during the LTTE years, but I think he got back to the university after the end of the war. Maybe he was a senior lecturer, even if, given the years he had to hide from the LTTE and be out of the university, he might not have reached the rank of full professor.

        PART THREE
        .
Are these people Sinhalese or Tamils – I couldn’t care less, but I could put on them the labels that are usually stuck on.
        .
You’d like me to join in insulting these people, don’t you? I shall, but I will stick to what I know. His first degree was BSc (Electrical Engineering) from Peradeniya. I remembered that he was brilliant as a student, so I thought that he had a First Class. He corrected me. He said that he had only a Second Upper, but he had worked for a number of years as an Electrical Engineer in Singapore. That was more than 45 years ago.
        .

Now let’s insult the man. Today, I don’t think that he cares to remember anything about Electricity. He’s turned his back on Technology. However, he had got a First Class BSc Mathematics later, and a PhD in it from Oxford. What do you and I know of Mathematics, at that level? I believe that he was dealing with a field where Mathematics, Logic, and Philosophy merge. I quite simply don’t understand, do you Helios – with your pretentious Greekish name?

        PART FOUR
        .
The fact is that he taught Mathematics for a living until he retired as “Senior Lecturer”. Somebody told me that he had done some studies in Harvard as well. I haven’t asked him – aren’t there more important things in life? The fact is that he is today a meticulous Historian. Read all that he has written. He’s an “unqualified Historian”, but in my view he deserves to be called a Professor of History.
        .
Now can you tell us something about yourself, “Anonymous Helios”.
        .
Get this clear: There are two brothers, who would be quite happy to be known simply as Rajan Hoole and Jeevan Hoole – and this “Elilini Hoole” is indeed the niece of Rajan Hoole.
        .
As Postscript let me tell you that Rajan and Kirubamalar Hoole have no children, and are doing all the constructive work that they undertake for us, and for our children.
        .
Don’t you think that you should respond to all this from me, Panini Edirisinhe (NIC 48 3111 444 V) aka Sinhala_Man?

      Brainless Andare,
Wash your hands with Gota’s curfew. Gota’s curfew is illegal. Gota is an illegal immigrant from USA. Mahinda Deshapriya is apologising for his actions because of murder threat from you thugs.

        6

Spoken like a true retard. There is no Gota’s curfew fool. Curfew was imposed by the police not by the president. If it is illegal then go to the court. We don’t need to listen to opinions of some third rate lawyer on what’s legal and what is not.

‘Gota is an illegal immigrant from USA’

Courts says otherwise. Now go fvck yourself.

Professor Hoole’s attitude of crossing every “t” and dotting every “i” was not acceptable to the “Thalaiver ” (Fuhrer in German) resulting in his inability to perform duties as the Vice Chancellor of Jaffna. I am not the least surprised that he is a “nuisance” to every crab who wants walk sideways. If a “further stay at home” is required, in my view it should have been clearly stated in the certification so released. But it is admitted, at least by a comment by one of the Uncles, that she must be careful and as such she visiting to a public office as alleged is serious, instead she should have straight away gone home. Yes! this business of checking vehicles for harassment is an age old practise. Of course, the security authorities may have all sorts of answers. Prof. Hoole and his colleagues are respondents in court case and let the court decided the outcome of their action as Commissioners of Election. The country should not descend to the level of “car checking harassment” just because the Tigers could ease of Prof. Hoole to flee the country in the wake of his appointment as VC Jaffna.

    Ratnajeevanjee Hoole,
You fool no one. You travelled from Jaffna to Colombo on Sunday, 17 May in an Election Commission vehicle. Besides driver and yourself, why did your adult son, a student, travel in the vehicle violating curfew and social distancing regulations? The Island Editor made a mistake in his report. You went to Jetwing Blue on Monday morning in an EC vehicle to collect your daughter Ehilini who completed 14 days quarantine. She was issued a certificate and informed, she had to further self-quarantine herself for another 14 days at home. She declared an address in Jaffna as her home. The 14 days additional self-quarantine is mandatory for all those being released after 14 days and applies to your daughter as well. Why did you take her and your son direct to the EC office? You and your family members spent that night at your rented flat at Gothami Road. Why did your daughter and son turn up at the EC office again on Tuesday morning? What business did your children have at the EC office? When staff complained to the Commissioner General, he informed Deshapriya who claims to have 32 years’ experience in public service but does not have the guts to tell you when you are wrong. He had his PA inform you! You then removed the two offending children and left for Jaffna without waiting for the Commission meeting on Wednesday. So Professor, did you come to Colombo in an official vehicle for official work or to collect your daughter? Take note, your day of reckoning will come before November.

He receives Rs 50,000 enhanced traveling allowance because his address in Jaffna is beyond 350 km. Thereafter, he occupied an EC flat at Glen Aber Place till last February paying a measly Rs 1,500. Deshapriya does he same. Tweedledee and Tweedledum are having a ball.

This is only possible when military is handling the pandemic “AS IN WAR”. Mr. Hoole, my relatives living abroad in medical field , who were Covid positive are all working that too in hospitals in direct contact with patients after 15 days of quarantine. Some countries are not even recommending a repeat test prior to assuming work again, unless clinically required. One person who after turning Covid positive was requested to work with Covid patients (because he is immune / had antibodies) to help overwhelmed staff due to shortage, which he readily accepted. Now compare this with your story and see how in a land like no other, same measures are used for political/punitive purposes. Question (call it naive) how many days of quarantine did that first Chinese patient undergo before taking selfie with Pavithra. Did Pavithre was mandated to quarantine ?

There are various reports that they performed enoguh tests to prove infections within cabinet and never tested enough to see the real numbers within the population. That is how Rajaakshes ‘ modus operandi work. We know it pretty well from Tsunami funds right ? But punnaku eaters allowed them to return and ruin this entire nation – so that is in making today. ..
          :
And also, bps never supplied the forces with the essential masks and other items so that they could prevent poor forces men being caught by the virus and that is why the numbers being counted among army/navy/marine are on a rise.

Pawithra the apawithara would not fit to clean maradana streets – but became the minister of health for some reasons. THat was to promote their mantra. No matter even if the masses would get infected, the bitch continued even attacking americans as ” developed nations that are self-proclaimed to be as such etc”. How can she have said this if she has a brain the size of a needle head ?

Are US, Germany, UK, Italy, France, the Netherlands, Spain and other industrial nations in the world not developed enough ?

This woman should have been taking better steps if she was not biased to their ELECTION agendas. Then we could easily become world champions having controlled COVID 19 making the island nation as a model one… but they did not have the head to go for it. That is the reality. I left srilanka on the 4th March, … there I had the chance to observe many of the steps then they had taken… there had been more arrivals from CHINA but how many of them were subjected to quarantining is not yet clear to the media. Media does not seem to be honest with that either.

        Mrs Pasqual,
        .
If you call Prof. Hoole as a liar, so what is the term you would use when addressing Mahinda Deshapriya and anyone starting with the first name ?????

You have not the least knowledge about how western countries work round the clock in the containment of COVID-19. THeir numbers to go up are more connected with multi-factors. Not just that their health care systems are poor compared to that of srilanka.. you guys being frogs in wells seem to ignore basics nevertheless compare the numbers with those in Srilanka. Why not you guys compare it with those in like minded countries (African countries, vietnam, Nepal, Thaiwan etc).
        :
Even if Germany among the grand nations have well managed their numbers, all others in europe have failed to achieve that level. UK ‘s situation is devastating yet today.
        :
My problem is not knowing the facts and figures in europe, our stupid people to compare it with that of theirs is so stupid.
        .
In Srilanka, yet today, no enough tests are performed even if far poor Nepalese have managed to do over 100 000 (double the number of ours)

SRILANKEN bps deliberately avoid going for MORE tests, because if they would perform more tests, then the number of patients would be counted more… that is a trick being applied by ballige puthas.. risking the lives of the poor people.

You talk about Pawithra, but some passengers brought back home from India were not subjected to quarantine.
      :
There were whole lot people if they found close to Rajapakshe BPs were not subjected to quarantine.
      :
I travelled back to Europe on the 4th March morning. There we noticed the arrivals from China were overflowing in BIA. No proper actions against spread of the virus were clear to us. Having ignored the WHO recommendations, the BPs to self-congradulate today is a joke to me.. why do the media men behave as if they are thoughts and minds taken away by rascals today is more than questionable ..

      Bro Chiv,

dont worry, even if Mr Sinhala man would make it very clear, nothing will change their thinking, so just ignore it.
      .
just ignore these SCP or the like, they would never be able to see it right. Rajapakshes mantra would never allow these buggers to see it beyond.
      :
Without having performed enough PCR tests but to compare the numbers with those in Europe – is being done just to keep the PUNNAKU eating majorities in dark. They are world champions at misleading the gullible.
