Horror In Aluthgama: Their Crime; Our Shame

By Tisaranee Gunasekara

“In this country we still have a Sinhala police; we still have a Sinhala army. After today if a single Marakkalaya or some other paraya (alien) touches a single Sinhalese…..it will be their end.” – Galagoda-Atte Gnanasara Thera (Aluthgama – 15.6.2014)[i]

“Call him a Bikkhu who controls his hand, also his feet; who is well controlled, who is happy within himself; who is collected….” – The Buddha (Dhammapada)

Gota and BBSIt is a chilling sight. On stage, Galagoda-Atte Gnanasara Thera is raining words of poison and fire. Below, a large crowd, made up of monks and ordinary people, are listening intently. They do not look violent or angry. There is hardly a sign that an hour or so later they will turn into a baying murderous mob. Many of the lay-listeners have their hands together, in the traditional gesture of worship. That and the focused looks on their faces indicate that as far as they are concerned they are listening to not to a political speech but to a religious sermon[ii].

The Jihadists, the Crusaders, the holy warriors are here. And in this place they wear the yellow robe and call themselves Buddhist monks.

All around, the police and the military stand, armed to the teeth, watching and listening. Galagoda-Atte Gnanasara Thera is inciting people to break the law. He threatens and threatens, his words like razor-sharp weapons, fiery missiles. And still the guardians of law and order watch. He is not arrested, produced before a magistrate and put away where he belongs – the jail.

The police are inactive. The law looks dead. The purveyors of hate and violence own the stage.

Holy wars, irrespective of who is fighting whom, are hell. Thanks to the nature of Buddhism – the real thing – this country escaped that hell for most of its history. Not anymore. Sinhala-Buddhism has metamorphosed into the even more bastardised and odious form of Rajapaksa-Buddhism. Galagoda-Atte Gnanasara Thera is its Prophet and Chief Prelate. It is a religion of suspicion and hate, a violent creed and a poisonous one, a faith based on murder and mayhem.

Who Permitted the BBS Rally?

The initial incident – the alleged attack on a Buddhist monk and his driver by three Muslim youths – was an accident. That was the only accident in the bloody tragedy which is being enacted even now. Everything else was non-accidental, deliberate. The BBS instigated the violence. The authorities facilitated the BBS.

After the initial outbreak of violence, calm reigned. And then someone at the top decided to permit the BBS to hold a rally in the still smouldering Aluthgama. That decision could have been made only by a certifiable lunatic or a person to whom law, morality and humanity are totally alien.

Such a momentous decision would not have been made by a police officer; or even the IGP. It would have either originated from or approved by the very top. And at the very top are President Rajapaksa – who from Bolivia tweets vague, Hallmark-type trite messages instead of condemning the violence and the violent – and his brothers. .

The BBS did not hold an illegal rally; they did not hold an illegal demonstration. They were permitted to have their rally and have their demonstration by the authorities. Without that decision Aluthgama would have returned to normal. And innocent lives could have been saved.

What was the aim of the authorities? A little riot? A controlled-riot? A stage-managed riot? A limited Black June? A short sharp lesson to all minorities to mind their words and deeds? A tiny reminder to the Muslims, Tamils and Christians that they live on sufferance? Create a new enemy to divert Sinhala-Buddhist attention? A signal to Narendra Modi and the West that we too are anti-Muslim? Some of this? All of this?

Otherwise why permit the BBS to turn smouldering ashes into an inferno? Why did the police and the STF fail to stop the rioters? Mobs are cowardly. At the first real sign of decisive action by the police and the STF the rioters would have melted away.

I lived through Black July. As a born-and-bred Sinhala-Buddhist I hope I will not have to see that horror happening again, to another minority. But I fear that controlled riots are becoming part of the Rajapaksa arsenal. And someday one of those mini-riots will spiral out of control.

This is no country for minorities; this is no country for decent Sinhalese and Buddhists. This is a moral wasteland and a paradise of lawlessness.

For the violence, for the deaths which have happened and which may happen, the BBS and the Rajapaksas must take responsibility. This is their work. This is their unpardonable crime.

We elected them; we tolerate them. That is our eternal shame.

Why denounce Gnanasara now??? .. Gnanasara is the voice and Karma (action) of S-Buddhist Mahanayakes and huge percentage of of S-Buddhist.. So Gnanasarism represent the Sinhalese Buddhism..

Thanks Madam T. Please translate in Sinhala to educate the PARANOID Sinhala Modayas who vote for Mahinda Jarapassa – their GOD.

Buddhism or what the Buddha Taught is nearly dead in Sri Lanka.

Buddhism needs to be REFORMED, DE-MILITARIZED and DE-POLITICIZED. Civil Society needs to lead the movement to reform Buddhism because the Buddhist monk establishment is Corrupt and Ignorant and promotes the Rajapaksa military dictatorship and its CHAOS SPECIALISTS – Lalith Weeratunge, Gota the Goon and BBS.

The Jarapassa regime MUST be held accountable. The Muslim politicians that collude with the regime too need to be held accountable – particularly Rauf Hakeem Socalled Minister of Justice who has prevented a case being brought against BBS leaders.

            Quite right Dude!

DISTRACT Sinhala Modayas to attack minorities, DIVIDE Sri Lanka’s communities and RULE is the Rajapaksa Motto.

This policy was spelled out in Geneva by Lalith Weeratunge when he promised CHAOS if the war crimes investigation goes ahead…

This is the beginning of the end of Mahinda Rajapaksa and his family of corrupt criminals..

Dude,Modayas can not be educated. There are only
good, bad and ugly modayas. This Gandassara is an
ugly modaya serving another ugly modaya who chose
the training to kill people. And then on top of
him is the ruthless and the ugliest on earth who
hired and contracted the killer. From the time of
his contract,he’s looking for his targets. Many
forget here that Muslims are targeted mainly for
their traditional loyalty to the UNP. Every SLFP
led govt had been after Muslims, trying to
victimize them or their business leaders. But
things were under control and never went this far
and were visibly bearing political seal. What’s
started now is,going extra mile and with the seal
of not stolen but approved certificate of

      Read more:

The chief of Bodhu Bala Sena, making a decisive expression of is activities throughout the recent past, admitted at a meeting held at Aluthgama yesterday (15th) that they are communalists and religious fanatics.

He also has stated the incident at Aluthgama was not an isolated event, it is one of a series of incidents and more such events could be expected in the future. It is also reported that journalists who recorded this statement were assaulted and their cameras and video equipment smashed.

Certain Bhikkus and individuals who were incited after this statement attacked business places belonging to Muslims and assaulted members of the police as well as STF. Media had on several occasions in the past revealed that the Defense Secretary was behind the BBS and analysts say if not for such a support the BBS would not be able to carry out their activities.

      Tisaranee Gunasekara –

The irony in the Alutgama saga is not only that a Buddhist Priest is making a virulent diatribe but no Maha Nayake or Buddhist priest has condemned it.

Is that why Mara warned against Buddhism, and tried to attack Buddha.

      Mara, Lord of Death
The Demon Who Challenged the Buddha

      http://buddhism.about.com/od/iconsofbuddhism/a/mara.htm

Many supernatural creatures populate Buddhist literature, but among these Mara is unique. He is one of the earliest non-human beings to appear in Buddhist scriptures. He is a demon, sometimes called the Lord of Death, who plays a role in many stories of the Buddha and his monks.

Mara is best known for his part in the historical Buddha’s enlightenment. This story came to be mythologized as a great battle with Mara, whose name means “destruction” and who represents the passions that snare and delude us.

People who love this country must topple this regime.

If its cannot be done by ballots (which is of course doubtful) then some radical steps must be taken. Gnanasara is nothing but a coward carrying out what he was told. Gota must be eliminated first and then the regime. My main worry is that he has already done tremendous damage to the Buddhism. He must pay for that. Attacking the minority interests is directly from Gota and Champika.

Srilankans must join together irrespective of party policies and force the regime to go, waiting for India or the West to do something is a comic. something must be done urgently.

          Thiru,
After finishing Muslims & Christians before they go to Vedda clan they will finish the decent Sinhalese and Colombo elite.
After finishing Vedda meat soaked in honey they will kill each other for instant Udarata Pahathrata so on then the cast fights since they love blood bath and poverty every now and then. Would never be satisfied and that’s the very reason that Lord Buddha gave them a deadline. Gonraja is only expediting the process.
          This country is doomed.

    • 5
      0

Agree Maligaspe – This regime has no choice. This regime badly needs to stay in power and in order to do that they will do any dirty things on earth. If they loose power almost all of them will be behind bars.

The only way to be in power is to make them popular among the majority. Hate talks and attacking other faiths is the easiest way to show the people that the only person who could protect Buddhism is Mara. Thus they can win the hearts and minds of the people within and also they can make an excuse to procrastinate and delay the international pressure on implementing promised resolutions. This is why last few years they pushed the Muslims to a corner. Fortunately the Muslims understood what’s coming and they were patient. Although hate talks and fabricated lies were delivered publicly by the BBS Rawana Balakaya and other pigs, yet they couldn’t make a significant case against the Muslims and attack them. Aluthgama case of attacking a Monk by Muslims was good enough.

Mara assumes that he can score two birds with one stone.
What he comfortably forgotten was there are majority peace loving people among majority Sinhalese.

Gota has to go first, Yes at any cost.
Gandasara and his cronies should be duly punished.
Mara must be taught a lesson.
      Enough is enough.
We just cant sit and wait.

What we need is a three pics on posters ‘Wanted dead or alive’.

You are right, she always brings LTTE to compare with Sinhala racist state actions. Now she brings the Crusade, Jihad etc to compare with Sinhala Buddhist terrorism.

Remember Gnanasara consulted with the international Buddhist Wiratu of Myanmara few months ago: I am sure they planned coordinated action.

Where is the West against international terrorism, do they only focus on the Muslims, why not the Buddhist terrorists?

This is the logical culmination of 66 years of misgoverning by the Sinhala ruling elite starting with D S Senanayake in 1948. What they nurtured is ethnic and religious animosity.

Any attacks should followed up by the law of the land and not by vigilante justice. Radical Buddhists are destroying their very life of Buddhism. History will record the dark days, how Buddhists watched it’s self destruction.

Buddhism is loosing it’s credibility around the world and soon the long history will come to an end. Credit to Burma and Sri Lanka.

If Sri Lanka is as everyone thinks as a ‘Democracy’, then the ruling party should resign and seek a new mandate from the people.

“For the violence, for the deaths which have happened and which may happen, the BBS and the Rajapaksas must take responsibility. This is their work. This is their unpardonable crime.”

I say no to that: Rajapakse is only the latest virulent version of the vicious Sri Lankan/Ceylon state inaugurated in 1948. Armed forces included in the atrocities to Tamils since 1956.

Pogroms, attacks and chasing away Tamils from their homes in villages has been happening since 1956. DSS started the Sinhala colonization even before independence to change the demography of the island.

What was visualized by the Sinhala ruling elite to make the island a monolithic Sinhalese-Buddhist state has been happening for 66 years and continuing. That’s all.

“Did our Sinhala Buddhist soldiers die in vain?.” That is not what happened.

Lots of India’s America’s free bombs were lost in vain. That is what happened.

What the rowdies did were finding enjoyments on even ones looked like sticks and bones by hunger and lack of sleep by months of exodus. Looted the property left over and one carried on the one refuges hand. The Shame-st event on the human history is the way the war was fought in the north. Even after about 230,000 complains are lodged, the UN is still not honestly coming forward and investigating and releasing a report, of what the Sinhalese rowdies were doing in the north, to the world. Dharusman produced his report 4 years ago. UN international panel reported the UN complicit on the war three years ago. Why the UNHRC taking so long to investigate and bring the truth to the world?

If ever a report come from the proper investigation, you will know that what kind of that vain is raping and looting.

Ultimately, 3 innocent lives lost for nothing, several homes and business places up in flames, the people thoroughly traumatized turned into refugees overnight. This is all done to create a war like situation for Defence Sec. to justify maintaining a large military presence in the country,(having almost 5000 vacancies caused by deserters as recently advertised) and taking the largest slice of the countries budget, even though there is no war situation in the country. He needs to be in vogue with the rest of the world, as in fighting Muslim extremism, and what better way to do it than thru proxi (BBS) to fulfill his dangerous mission. But everyone is wise to his machinations, and will indeed take account of his role to stoke the embers. The jealousy of Muslims success in business, better living standards and living together in communities whilst attending to their religious observances in peace, is just too much for these bigots to stomach. They (monks) like the reverence and attention they get from the laity, police officers, judges and even the highest in the land, for which no Muslim will never subscribe. Muslims will bow their heads only to God Almighty.

Marwan, I don’t see Muslims bowing to their God. All I see is putting their heads on the floor and raise their arses to show it to the ‘God Almighty’. What a sight!

As we expected, this is phase 1 of the distraction from following MOdi’s orders to MR to implement article 13.

Not a coincidence it happens when MR is busy in Bolivia! Is it that bad he does not get an invite to any regular country us all Sri Lankans wish to visit and perhaps get lost in? Uzbekistan, Sudan, Azerbaijan, Bolivia ..damn, he is scraping the bottom of the barrel is’nt he?

Phase 2 will be arrests of a few Muslims with arms ( wanting to defend themselves since no one else is going to do it) but this time they will be either Taliban or Al Qaeda in the Indian Ocean-AQIO, and the clever Defense Sec will be all smiles announcing the imminent danger of Islamic terrorism in the Indian Ocean!!

Wink Wink…Mr Modi!! He knows a few things about burning houses and people too!

If you are a sinhala buddhist then one day you too will end up supporting and defending the sinhala buddhist state and when you begin to do that I shall point it out. A sinhala buddhist can only be a sinhala buddhist. It cannot be anything else.

You can scream, mock and attack but we Sri Lankan Muslims are not leaving our motherland, not to Saudi or any part of the world. We have lived harmoniously in the past and will strive to continue. As much as it hurts to see our brothers and sisters injured and killed for one racist, mental breed,, we know not every Buddist is with them, nor will they ever be. I have deep faith in my creator, normalcy will be restored but the evil are never going unpunished, they will pay for every act they do here, now or hereafter.

      Thank you brother,

Thank you for understanding, thank you for forgiving, I am born as a Sinhalese and Buddist, I am ashamed…..and devastated.

Majority of the sinhalese are not racist, not war mongers.

I ask my fellow sinhalese to share in their Face book accounts thisaranees article, to show our solidarity with our muslim brothers.

Act now before it’s too late.

I lived through Black July. As a born-and-bred Sinhala-Buddhist I hope I will not have to see that horror happening again, to another minority. But I fear that controlled riots are becoming part of the Rajapaksa arsenal. And someday one of those mini-riots will spiral out of control.

Our heartfelt sorrow to the families of martyrs and to all peace loving people of Sri Lanka.

Every incident of this nature happens for a reason and it is clear to people with intellect know the cause and effect that will result.

The very people who are supposed to protect (Rulers and Bhikkus) are the ones destroying the ‘Buddha’ teachings. What a sad end to a long history of 2550 years. None were arrested and prosecuted in the past.

Absence of rule of law is a grave injustice to all law abiding tax payers. They pay taxes for security and safety. If the government fails, people should take private measures to protect their places of worship.

Islam and Muslims have the protection of Allah. Historically the enemies of Islam have embraced the straight path after long battles. The events unfolding have a significance only known to Him, the creator of the Universe.

Ye are the best community that hath been raised up for mankind. Ye enjoin right conduct and forbid indecency; and ye believe in Allah. And if the People of the Scripture had believed it had been better for them. Some of them are believers; but most of them are evil-livers. (The Noble Quran 3:110) They will not harm you save a trifling hurt, and if they fight against you they will turn and flee. And afterward they will not be helped. (The Noble Quran 3:111)

      Maghribi,
You wrote, “Islam and Muslims have the protection of Allah.” But all that we see right now is, Muslims fight among themselves and kill each other in most parts of the world. Is Allah in a deep slumber?

Who is cowards? muslims or your prophets BBS modayas who where no where to be seen and hiding in fear in the dhambulla caves when the LTTE was present, and now they are out like worriers when they feel safe and no threat to their life.

These two Draculas MR & GR wants blood. The blood they sucked from Tamils is now dried up and need fresh blood. So they are after Muslim blood and using the Bloody Drunkard Monk to satisfy their hunger.

The day of retribution for these blood suckers will come soon and they will not have even space in the gutters to hide.

    Count your days Blood suckers.

    Dear Tissaranee,

Thank you for your writing, your fighting against the Lunatics of this gouvernement.

I permited myself to copy and past some of your words on my Facebook page and I copy them here again……..Every sane Srilankan should do it where ever he/she lives…if you care about…your self.

“I lived through Black July. As a born-and-bred Sinhala-Buddhist I hope I will not have to see that horror happening again, to another minority. But I fear that controlled riots are becoming part of the Rajapaksa arsenal. And someday one of those mini-riots will spiral out of control.”

Thank you thousand times T.G, thank you.

Another good article Tissaranee, it is a sad situation in this country. It seems our people are not intelligent enough to realize they have suffered until recently, the ravages of a brutal ethinic war, and that we lost thousands and thousands of our people. They forget the bombs in buses and public places. It seem their memories are short, and they are asking for more. This fat, overfed, barbarian monk, from the BBS is a criminal, and should be behind bars, kicked out from the Buddhist clergy. He has done enough damage to the country. As for the bigger thugs who seem dumb and deaf to what is going on, and who pretend they are interested in the well being of all Sri Lankans, only a shot where it hurts – that is economically, by international communities, will send a strong message. The Arab nations must stop doing business with them, and stop the recruitment of Sri Lankan laborers, which will hurt our economy. The Rajapaksa understand only one language – the language of money.

As a school boy I witnessed the flames of 83 riots. I still remember how a Tamil family tried to get out of their burning house when the onlooking goons stoning at them . They would have been charred to death inside that posh traditional looking upstairs house and I left the place scarred myself for life . I remember how people celebrated the news of massacre of Tamil prison inmates shortly afterwards and the jubilant mood people had believing they taught a good lesson to Tamils. What unfolded afterwards was quite contradictory and we were haunted for thirty odd years of horror as a result of our short sighted stupidity. We gathered the much needed momentum to Tamil Tigers and probably they could not have asked anything better than that. We still struggle with wider Tamil diaspora due to mass exodus of those days.
Have we learnt any lessons at all from those tragic events.Probably not when looking at what is unfolding at Alithgama and Beruwala. if there are issues there are civilized way of resolving them.Do we want our children to be embattled with an insurgency backed up by Al-Qaida .Are we heading for another crisis.Feelings of de-Ja-vu and horrifying memories of yesteryear re-surfacing again.

What harm did muslims do to this beautiful country and its people, to deserve this fate?? If its the alleged news that sinhalese brothers work upon, than this country would no longer be a pride of Asia.

There are Buddhist monks who should be dis-robed, as the Buddha dis-robed a Naga who had become a monk. I wonder whether the various Mahanayakes have such power.

Similar treatment should be meted out to infamous Catholic priests who play communal politics, but masquerade as human rights protectors. In this case the Bishops do have such power.

The words of Tissaranee (a Bradman Weerakoon comptemporary I guess) makes me guess this Aluthgama incident is a trial version of things to be planted prior to Elections. The timing has Lalith W.s hand somewhere. Both MR and GR were out of the Island. The author of “Chaos” if the UN Inquiry is to begin – a participant in Helping Hambabtota shame!

Gnanasara is a thug duly created by Gota with a hidden Agenda. The Forces are suitably prepared to make conrolled actions as needed on his directions. Gnanasara is a very good tool for Gotas mindset & plans. He
has I beleive kept the Mahanayakes briefed and hence the silence.

This is on the edges of a Military Coup that can temporarily take up
duties when required by MR/GR combine. Similar activity can be traced to
Egypt and its Interior Ministry. The Dynasty MUST go on. This Democracy
of Elections will go on but the contenders be better warned of planned road “accidents” that can happen. Recall Sooriyaaratchchi s death etc?

The dilly-dallying with talks on 13A will also be useful as time is
required to complete the Rajapaksian-rump work in N/E.

If the regime has not learnt from the Black July incident then its sad to say they are not qualified to rule Sri Lanka. Balu Bala Sena was able to hold the rally only with the permission of the Government. This clearly shows that the Government wanted some sort of trouble. They should have known better. July riots enabled Tamils to move to developed countries where they are actively involved in local politics and able to force their governments to be strong against Sri Lanka. .July riot is the reason for the UN inquiry today.

Has any one thought what would happen if the same happens in Muslim countries where the Muslims in Sri Lanka force these governments to take strong action against Sri Lanka. What would happen to the foreign remittances, what would happen to the support Pakistan is giving Sri Lanka?

Is our ruling regime so stupid? Is the opposition so weak as to demand the resignation of the Secretary of Defence who is a supporter of Balu Bala Sena and who should have protected the innocent. What are the Muslim parties in Sri Lanka doing being with UPFA? Who is ultimately responsible? What about the Muslim politicians who are sitting on the lap of Rajapakse?

Is it time for Muslims to rise up against the Muslim politicians?
