Canadian Liberal Party Leader Bob Rae yesterday expressed concern over the impeachment process against the Chief Justice Dr. Shirani Banadaranayake.

According to the media release issued by Rae, he has also asked the Canadian Foreign Ministry to raise the issue with the Common Wealth Secretary General and the Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group, which has the mandate to disciplining violations of the association’s basic principles
“As a member of the Commonwealth and the designated host of the 2013 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting, Sri Lanka has a duty to uphold democracy and the rule of law. As they have failed to do so, Canada has an obligation to hold its government to account at the highest level.”
“As recently raised by the Canadian Bar Association, the lack of due process and open attack on the independence of the judiciary and the rule of law are deeply troubling. They are part of a continuing deterioration of democracy in Sri Lanka and directly violate the Commonwealth’s fundamental values.”

He supported and was personally known to the local Liberal Candidate and former MP – Luis Temelkovski. I told Rae many Lankans did not agree with the crude treatment he got in Colombo and the poker-faced guy told me the Govt has not expressed regrets so far. Rae is presently in the frontline of the Canadian political leadership and packs consdierable muscle. I might add when the incident took place I mentioned in another blog this undiplomatic action by the Lankan authorities will not end there.

Mr Sumanasekera appears to know less about Brampton than I do. There are only a few Tamils there. It is a pre-dominantly Punjabi area, recognising which the Indian Govt has moved their Consular office there. Usually the area returns around 3 Federal MPs. PM Stephen Walker, 2 years ago even named a street after actor Raj Kapoor there. While Tamils, those without relatives, first come to the lesser expensive Apartment blocks in Scarborough they move out – with their own fortunes rising – to nearby areas like Markham with the passage of time.
It might come as a surprise to you the investment I mentioned, reportedly, is made with LTTE-connected interests in Canada. This cannot surprise you as the Rajapakses stole power on a surreptitous
