Is Choice Limited To Heartless Gota, Hopeless Ranil & Clueless Sira?

By Kumar David

Prof. Kumar David

Sun Tzu say: “If you know enemy and know yourself, no need fear hundred battles. If you know yourself but not enemy, for every victory you suffer one defeat. If you know neither enemy nor yourself, you succumb in every battle.”

First the Easter carnage and after that mob riots have put a different focus on upcoming elections. The presidential falls due between 15 November and 15 December and it seems our choice is limited to an alleged war criminal or a non-achiever; clueless Sira, now monkeying with geishas in Japan, is not a serious starter. Mob violence evokes bitterness among Muslims, one writes: “There is evidence police in affected areas are not protecting Muslims. The majority, themselves Sinhala Buddhists, want to join the melee. Rioters should be shot but electoral benefit will go to the Rajapaksas who incite extremism”. While it is true that SLLP and the Paksa-Brotherhood did encourage SB extremism and collude with the dregs in the past, to be agonizingly fair, there is no evidence the Brotherhood or the SLPP did by word or action encourage the post Easter Sunday mobs; at least I have so far seen no evidence and it is unjust to convict on reputation alone. Let us hold our tongues unless real evidence comes to light.

I have concerns because there is talk of “a hidden-hand” or “a black-hand” moving mobs into riot torn areas from outside and there is fear that a higher power may be behind military collusion with goon squads such as here (Colombo Telegraph).

Monks help clean up a bombed out church

One is justified in fearing that goons from, say Kulyapitiya were moved to Minuwangoda to burn and loot, while a reverse movement creates mayhem in Kulyapitiya, and so on. Muslims whose shops and homes were gutted say: “Our families have been living here for generations. We have been educated at Sinhala schools. It’s very unlikely that the villagers orchestrated this attack”. Another from the village who lost everything said: “It was our Sinhalese brothers and sisters who helped us in this situation. We don’t believe anyone from our neighbourhood in Kuliyapitiya was involved”.

It is impossible to transport and switch goon squads around without connivance of the guardians of “law and order”. So is there a black-hand fermenting trouble? If so who is the likely suspect? The Army Commander will much better serve the nation if instead of “humbly” begging rioters to stay off the streets he can get his men to do their duty with firmness! Major Prabhath Bulathwatte, commander Tripoli Military Intelligence Platoon, allegedly responsible for assassinations, abductions and attacks on journalists has been recalled to active service by the Army Commander. Is the Sri Lanka Army incapable of ensuring sound intelligence without depending on rotten apples out on bail? “Kadavule!”

In my column last week I did insist: “Lanka will heal and recover more quickly than Cassandras and prophets of gloom predict. I detect fine-tuned judgement in people’s minds and more caution in jumping to conclusions. This is not July 1983 when Lanka was a JR-inspired cannibal. We have learnt our lesson and the mood is different. Jihadism will not defeat us; it will not overpower the Muslims. It will be eradicated, it has no indigenous roots, its eschatology is of foreign provenance. Those baying for Muslim blood and the rabble rousers will be vanquished”. For this I was rebuked, “Wishful Thinking is the Mother of Delusion”; however, though a little dampened, my optimism remains. Buddhist monks are visiting and helping clear up debris in bombed churches, mosques have offered to open their doors to Cardinal Ranjith, there is widespread indignation at both jihadist killers and racist goons, and I note that ‘Comments’ in Colombo Telegraph on rehiring Bulathwatte express near unanimous outrage. Such things we did not see in 1983. Come on Lanka, let’s vanquish the prophets of gloom; let us prove that we are not deluded!

Firmness will restore order on the streets within hours but as Sumanthiran lamented: “It is of particular concern to hear reports of attacks taking place during curfew with security forces not taking steps to stop the violence”. Quite justifiably and forebodingly he added “If people think that government and security forces are unable or unwilling to protect them, they will defend themselves. Don’t let that happen! Don’t let yet another community feel that to survive it must fight for its life”. Sinhala racists, the compromised armed forces and the government are, by inaction, laying the ground for a repetition of the Tiger story. We the people must turn back this time bomb.

This brings me to the matter promised in the title of this piece. Gota, Ranil and Sira are worse than useless. The first is an alleged war-criminal, a white-van fan and a danger to Tamils and Muslims; the second is effete under fire (Mrs B had bigger balls) and the third is a moron. Realistically, that in purely electoral terms, unfortunately is that we will only have a choice between Gota if he gets the US to confirm his citizenship dump, and Ranil. If that be the case how should one vote? I mean the second preference vote, no ways should any in this deplorable triumvirate get a first preference vote. This is a topic I will return to nearer the date and after Gota’s citizenship puzzle is clarified.

The thrust of my title is that in the first instance (first instance means before reflecting on the second preference vote) we must eschew all three in this good-for-nothing triumvirate. We must put up a New Alternative, a candidate who can reflect ‘the fed-up voter’, those who rallied to the January Eighth Movement of 2015, the Left, the Liberals, the Democrats, the TNA, Mano Ganesan, women’s and non-governmental bodies, the and if it joins, the JVP. It’s not at all too early to call a Unity Forum(s) to take up the idea. Of course we won’t win or come second, but Rome was not built in a day and I daresay the builders toiled for a while before the job got done. If the people in their majority choose Gota, Ranil, or some other rascal nominated by the SLPP or UNP, well they will suffer for five more years but the effort to get past such obstacles has to start now and the builders have to be patient and tireless. Many people say this, but a concrete call for a Unity Forum has yet to be issued.

A threat to the constitution and to democracy – are military and black-hand smacking their lips? – has been aired in recent weeks. The safeguard is mobilisation of the people. Mobilisation in this context is to extensively discuss it, vigorously oppose the concept in the media, and in the worst case oppose it with a general strike. The three blind mice of the triumvirate will not mobilise the people to meet this threat; my putative new initiative can include this task on its agenda.

A core element in the programme has to be rejection of ethno-politics, that is slavery to identity obsession. Eradication will require intervention on many fronts; education, creating a new consciousness and changing the constitution. Embedding religion (the so-called rightful place of Buddhism) and special mention of Sinhala in all constitutions since 1972 has encouraged a narrow and profoundly divisive state of mind in the people. A plural, democratic, modern and progressive philosophy cannot be stimulated in the country unless the Chapter on Buddhism is repealed by assertion of secularism and all differential or unbalanced references to language are removed. None of this is going to happen overnight but it is time to boldly place this on the agenda. No one in the good-for-nothing triumvirate will dare say any of this.

Most of the comments here agree Gotha may be the next president. They also believe given the post Easter situation, his chances of getting elected is brighter. So are you,ll suggesting may be he had some role to play in the Easter Carnage. Was his chances were that bright prior to this Easter???? I too heard about Dhammika being a common candidate (as in Trump.s case, when two major parties fail go to a filthy rich shrewd businessman to fix). At least given his worth he cannot be dumb (like most of our politicians “cunning fools”) Doctor I disagree on one point. You have given too much credit to our public who too are immoral, cunning fools as per a writer in CT. Majority is wanting to remain in the vicious cycle and not outside. You mean to say Gotha will be elected without elections?????. I suggest you read recent articles (refreshing) written by Kasun, Kodippili and Suranimala. The few you see as comments here are exceptions. CT dosent reflect the Lankan public. Hiru, Ada and Sakthi does. 2015 is mere aberrant.(even the architect is no more)

Sira and Bucks -1: Heard at a recent Media conference with Maithripala Sirisena (7th and present President of Sri Lanka):
    .
Media Man: Sir, have you never heard of the following quotation of Harry S Truman – 33rd President of USA: The buck stops here!
    .
Sirisena: Buck? What buck? (Licking his lips) You mean Dollars?
    .
Media Man: No Sir. I mean buck as meant by Helen Clark (37th PM of New Zealand) when she said, In New Zealand the buck stops with the Prime Minister.
    .
Sirisena: You all seem to know about that. The CB bucks stopped there and nothing came to me.

Sira and Bucks -2: Continuation …..
      .
Media Man (Somewhat embarrassed): Sir, that is not what they meant. Buck here means responsibility – not dollars. When PM Helen Clark said, ”In New Zealand the buck stops with the Prime Minister, she meant that the final responsibility for everything is with the Prime Minister”. In other words there PM should not try to pass the buck.
      .
Sirisena: Wonderful! Wonderful! These white people are really smart. Must visit New Zealand before my term ends. Anyway this is exactly what I have been telling all along but no one is listening. The buck should stop with Ranil. Now go and tell him not to try to pass the buck to me.

The President has visited Gnanasara at the prison hospital.

He has NOT visited any of the “political prisoners” who are being held for many years, without trial.
Do we need a president like him?

Prof. Kumar selected three candidates and evaluating their traits and qualities. I do doubt if anybody needs his analysis on that area. After All they are his own pickup. How a manager would evaluate a dancer for his cabaret club. My guess would be the how effective she/he as flasher. How somebody would select his/her hit man? A guaranteed, merciless- brutal would be the preferred one. Lankawe EP job is for, as per JR’s definition, beyond an Alucose. He said starving Tamils would be the pleasant life of Sinhala Buddhists. A candidate has to fulfil this & similar requirements. As electors are Sinhala Buddhists, irrelevance of Prof. Kumar’s talk, Old Brother prince will be the one assigned the job.
Unlike KD saying, Ranil may not be an option this time too. Ranil didn’t wanted to go for it in 2015 thinking running the country and saving the war hero are two competing objectives. He willing offered to work under somebody else as PM. But to save his back during that subordinate time, he altered (adulterated) the constitution with 19A. After once more fooling around with election laws in LG election, in 2017, he backed off from being the PM. He was not opposing the NCM in 2018. In the October revolution, he was an active partner in dethroning the Yahapalanaya. From 2017, he clearly reflected his anti-West Policies in every action. He kicked out of his American Amb., Athol Keshap during Jerusalem Embassy discussion. During October Coup, Ranil functioned as a spy on Western Embassies to the New and Old Royals. He defeated TNA and Western countries by smoothly reversing the coup, when things looked scary for the rebels. That time Ranil was willingly offering the PM position to Old King. But the SC and CoA justices didn’t fully cooperate to that move. Later with the help of CC, Ranil & others destroyed that SC’s and CoA’s composition. Now, a future coup can go without much resistance in SC.

So there are many indications contrary to Ranil standing on this election or let a serious UNP candidate to standing this time. He will be the main obstacle to Vaalaiththodam Jr and Mangala. West may prefer Mangala becoming as PM, if doesn’t have Sinhala Buddhists’ support for EP. West’s ideal choice this time would be Old Brother Prince as EP and Mangala as PM. That is a very controversial and complex choice; but that will work for them. Old Brother Prince rising was the result of three actions. Thero de Silva, after attending, Maha Viyath’s campaign meeting issued his evaluation that of how much pro-West Candidate Old Brother Prince is. This and similar evaluations confirmed to West that they can go with Old Brother Prince. Old King backing off from his Coup PM Job based on the New American Ambassador’s request so that she can support one of his family members standing in EP election. That automatically promoted Old Brother Prince as the America’s candidate. The third is from Sinhala Buddhists and Ayatollahs requests for him to go for it. The heavy weight of this is by a planning mistake of Yahapalanaya’s setting up ISIS to attach Tamil Churches. As Ranil, his ministers, New King, his Guvnors are openly got caught in that game, Sinhala Buddhists or Ayatollahs or West will not be believing in future on any of the Yahapalanaya candidates for the job. This includes New King, Ranil, Vaalaiththodam Jr. India goofed on many things, recently. Mr. Modi has been entangled in his hard fought election. They could not do anything to hinder Old Brother Prince’s rising. Only perceivable problem is Old Royal Family coming out with a second candidate lie Old Beauty Queen.
Other than these external factors, analyzing qualities or trait doesn’t play any roles in Lankawe election. A Dancer’s plus points are how sexy she looks externally or how creative she can be with obscene flashing, on the stage.

Kumar David dismisses, in his words “Easter Carnage”, the ‘tragedy’ that was the 2019 Lankan Easter Sunday. His wishful thinking {“….Jihadism will not defeat us; it will not overpower the Muslims. It will be eradicated, it has no indigenous roots,….”}.
Say Vice-President Trotfucius Inc., “Words composed approved by Think Tank”.
Say President of Trotfucius Inc., “Message to subconscious ‘Need strong man’ loud”.
Say Assistant President of Trotfucius Inc., “Kadavule, kadavule……..kadavule”.

Very agree with you Mr Rodrigo. Thank you for your nice comment !
    :
My anger is not under control in thse days since i happened to watch several videos the way how Rajapakshes loyalists brutally attacked those innocient, muslim families.
    :
I agree with you more about the domestic dogs and their repay to us.
    :
One of my cousin sisters had 5 generations of cats and dogs. They had been so crazy with domestic animals (for good for both sides).
    .
We also had rabbits, parrots and several other animals as pets. Now us being in EUrope, we are only bound to our jobs not having enough time to have even a cat.
    :
I respect animals lot more today than ever being in the past, because I believe human species are multiple times cruel than the animals. More of them, unfortunately, you could find in OUR beloved country srilanka.
    :
From University to anywhere you would mingle, you will find animal-like SRILANKENs though calling themselves SINHALA BUDDHISTs but continue to be barabaric. Alone their wording towards the other regardless of the race, sometimes to their ones in own race, they abuse their mouth not thinking twice. I thought OUR religion could shape up our nation, unfortunatley, now I think my assumption was totally out of focus.

Dear Analyst; Carefully go through the statements of the army chief. Don’t expect him to boot lick the politicians. Therefore I do not see that protecting the suckers of our blood alone is the reason for security forces being in alert. My observation on military personnel is that they are on alert but not on full alert.

All experience has shown that mankind is more disposed to suffer – while events are sufferable – than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed.
    (American Declaration of Independence, 1776)

What it failed to mention was that some cultures are less disposed to right themselves than others.

    Dear “shankar”,

    Please don’t shoot the messenger.
    .
Read carefully what has been said on the previous page. I heard something and put it on. Others have added.
    .
Before answering you now I checked the Wikipedia entry. It still says the same thing about Ranil and Dammika meeting. I feel that I enjoy some credibility among readers because I state only what can be substantiated.
    .
    https://www.colombotelegraph.com/index.php/the-thomian-pharisees-are-unrepentant-why-this-matters-to-all-sri-lankans/
    .
When I say things like that, some imagine that they just cannot be true. Prof. Kumar David never tells you where he had his school education: S. Thomas’, Mt Lavinia, where I had only two years. His period, Kunji was Warden – explains how an engineer-fellow is so versatile, and writes such good English as Kumar does. There are three branch schools who all have the same Board of Governors. Chairman Anglican Bishop Canagasabey.
    .
Just because Rev. Marc Billimoria is running it well today, you don’t want to believe that the Bishop and the Headmaster in Bandarawela are craven humbugs. I’ve now got to go to the Police Station to make sure that my complaint about the ISIS video that is in my smart phone is recorded and investigated.
    .
Eleven days, nothing done! I know it seems a storm in a tea-cup. But all are talking about whether My3 heard at Sri Lankan time or Singapore time.

    Dear Mr David

    Thank you for sharing.

I agree except you dropped TNA in the possible coalition. Please revisit that section without the TNA incoporated all will make sense to ‘all’ the Sri Lankans. The Roam can be built in a day and you will be very surprised how the Sri Lankans can respond when we give a receipt without the TNA.

You want Bhuddist extremism & Muslim extremism removed from our country yet want the Sri Lankans to accept TNA and others with blood in their hands??? goons to goons is a choice??

The non partisan majority of Sri Lanka never wanted parties with identity politics?? they may have supported the parties who have given preferential traetment to people as required to manage the ‘pressure vessel’ relief valve settings required in post colonial country but it was merely a journey to depressor the vessel such a setting more acceptable to all can be reached eventually?? No one asked for FP/ITAL/TULF to make a living from this except to be elected to deliver development work to the Nation/Constituents……the same applies to the Muslim parties too. A hell hole was delivered by TNA/Muslim parties because they do not have Nation policies and by name alone a partisan party just as all other racist Sinhala parties by race and religious names.

Further TNA was allowed into the scene just as the JVP was to demonsratrate we can do things differently from the horrors of the war. However JVP evolved to have National policies and TNA started the same old game that has hardened all of us who are the non partisan majority of SL. Every time we further talk down the entire race/religions and generalised/ categorised and narrated the GOSL/Sinhalese people/turn coats/traitors & pointed a gun at us is not a way to live in SL period . You can not be selective in grieving for the loss of life in this miserable conflict we had…. peace and reconciliation is between the families of all who lost their loved ones since 1970 and is not a deal where GOSL deliver what TNA demands as we the people of SL do not and will not ever approve/ALLOW this period.

So please please if there is anyone capable of delivering Nation Building from TNA kindly identify them and ask them to join with the JVP (who does not have any racists nor has any policies prejudice some one some where) or form a new party with no Tamil and Muslim attached and make their case on economical grounds and we will respect as we are all equally expected to deliver/serve. all citizens in SL. We are not interested in the TNA policies as a Nation just as we do not support racists from any other segments of the society. So if you are suggesting something please make it a real one we can all support.

No one left to cast the first stone as we are all sinners so let us forgive each other and start this one nation journey at once please.
