Lasantha Was Murdered On The 8th Of January; Let Us Pray For Our Nation

By Lal Wickrematunge

Each year since 2009 friends, colleagues and family gather at Lasantha‘s grave site to pay homage to a fallen hero. It is human nature to revere a person after his death. This is more so in Sri Lanka. Whilst alive practicing his profession Lasantha was vilified, assaulted tied up in a myriad of litigation and finally assaulted. He died defending his right to express an opinion as is enshrined in our Constitution and to lay forth information before a public who paid to buy the Sunday Leader.

Lal By Dushyanthi

Lal at Lasantha‘s grave site

As Lasantha’s grieving daughter Ahimsa wrote recently it is ironical that President Mahinda Rajapaksa decided to seek an unprecedented third term on the 8th of January 2015. This third term is the stepping stone to trigger an incumbent President in seeking multiple terms in office consequent to the restrictions placed by bringing in the 18th amendment to the Constitution.

It is opportune to enlighten the reader that the incumbent President knows first hand the emotions of family members who have lost a parent, sibling or an offspring. I would rather say….almost, as far as he is concerned. His brother the Secretary of Defence, Gotabaya Rajapaksa was targeted by the LTTE whilst being driven in a bomb- bullet proof car in Colombo a few years ago. A badly shaken Gotabaya Rajapaksa raced to Temple Trees in blood soaked clothing to be hugged by a much relieved brother President Mahinda Rajapaksa. Massive bill boards dotted the country depicting this emotive moment. I believe President Rajapaksa yet relives that moment and the anxiety that he went through. I also believe that he as a consequence is aware of the emotions of Lasantha’s family and the need to bring closure into his murder. Therefore he nor his family will find fault with Lasantha’s family for insisting that justice is done or pursued till it is concluded as is required by law.

Many a friend and acquaintance tell me that I should forget, forgive and move on. I would. But Lasantha’s killers roam free. No bill boards nor cut outs can pacify a family seeking justice for a murder most cowardly. Not until there is legal closure.

President Mahinda Rajapaksa did tell me more than once that Gen Sarath Fonseka was behind Lasantha’s killing. That was at a time Gen. Fonseka had announced that he would contest President Rajapaksa for the Presidency. There was a time lapse between Lasantha’s murder and the Presidential election. I did ask him why he did not pursue action against the General for murder instead of using trumped up charges for seemingly innocuous offenses. The answer was incoherent but once he did say that i should bring forth evidence. Others in authority said that it would demoralize the Army.

It is implausible that the President of this country and others within the chain of command, who knew exactly where Prabakaran was, where KP was, is unaware as to who killed Lasantha. And who gave orders to do so. I have been informed by authority that the perpetrators did not mean to kill Lasantha but went “over the top”. This too proves that many are aware as to who killed Lasanatha, but dare not volunteer information into a murder as required by law out of fear. Or do they feel that Lasantha deserved to be murdered?

It is a fact that none of the assaults nor killings of journalists have been successfully prosecuted. Some even venture to pontificate that there is freedom of expression wafting through Sri Lanka at present. They believe so because no journalists are being assaulted or killed at present. There is no requirement to do so now. Journalists have resorted to self censorship or have fled the shores of the island.

The path the current regime could have been stalled was only through an implosion. Many wished to believe it would be through a split within the ruling family. I did not think so. The moment has come to pass and is before us. The implosion came through political party lines. It is but true that power without accountability should be abhorred. But power sans accountability without time limits?

The Singapore or Malaysian models maybe dangled before us to counter this argument. Politicians will scream out that we are a sovereign nation and essentially a proud people. Unlike the two models have we evolved into being Sri Lankans irrespective of race? That might be a first step towards national reconciliation.

Lasantha was passionate in his chosen profession. He was committed and fearless. Not all loved him. Not all hated him. He could sense a story well before many in his profession did. He was a caring elder to children and a good leader. The journalists who worked with Lasantha were jealously guarded by him as his prized possessions even against his own management. I should know that.

Time and tide goes by swiftly. It is six years since Lasantha was murdered. Six long years without the numerous squads assigned to handle investigations into the murder making any headway. Let us pray for him. Let us pray for the perpetrators. Let us pray for our Nation on the 8th of January 2015.

I too have paid my homage to Lasantha in a fitting spirit in my write up published in the CT.

I am confident that voters in Sri Lanka will deliver their homage to Lasantha in an outstanding way on 8 January 2015.

Let us hope for the better or sink in slumber on 8 January.

We must not forget the services rendered by the Kiri Mandala mawatha headquarters through Lasantha.

Lasantha was atrue servant of the pentecost. He was martyred because he worked for us. We shall never forget our Saint Lasantha.

We forgive him for his later union with Sonali and any other sins he committed by going to the Indian embassy the night before his death.

Pentecost for the Zion. Lasantha embodied our influence in the world.
      Peace be upon him.

@Pentecost, cast the first stone if you have not sinned in your entire life. Why is that Pentecosts always preach never re-marry but never talk about the ten commandments. How many of those commandments have you broken before you talk ill of Lasantha.

A man is accountable only to God, not to a human and certainly not to a Pentecost. CPM fellows have a messed up doctrine, created your own version of the bible………many other things.

Re-marriage is a sin as well as all other sins you commit in your life. One sin is not worse than the other. So, stop being so judgemental of this great human, who gave his life for the people he loved so much.

Mot of us sought refuge in CT from religious nutters. Now you together with Pentecost have seized this holy forum which belongs to rationalists(?). Couldn’t you set up a religious nutters forum to cater for your religious fervour.

Both should go to Pakistan/Afghanistan/Syria/…. and continue with your ecumenical services.

Leave Lasantha alone, let him Rest in Peace.

Lasantha W was murdered – Baratha Was murdered – in Kahawatta there were dozens of people were murdreed. To this day are there any kind of investigations and final conviction being aware to the general public ? No. People have to raise the question why ?
As Rajaitha s hand out showed to the nation last night (on Satana Program), the general procedure is that president himself interfere in each and every court case whether or not to be held unfairly- no matter the victims would feel no justice is given President want to defend his culprits

The real reason why the government did not disclose the result of the murder report of Lasantha was that it came out Lasantha in fact committed suicide due to a domestic issue with his new wife.

According to reliable sources, the government, especially MR who was a close riend of Las, decided not to reveal the findings.

MR has also told people that he is prepared to take the blame.
      So there you go.

    Lal Wickrematunge –

    May Lasantha rest in peace.

The best way to pay homage to Lasantha is to vote for Mr. Mitripala Sirisena, and spread the word and get the voters to the polling stations early. Every vote counts.

    May Lasantha rest in peace.

      Amarasiri

On the 8th January – if the MaRa-the-Lasantha killer wins – Sri Lanka will announce the international community that democracy is dead in this country and it has well and truly become a pariah state. All Sri Lankans who embrace democracy and good governance will have to look to the international community to fix this pariah regime.

What an unprincipled shit eater is this “Amarasiri”!

In 2010, the murderer of Lasantha, Sarath Fonseka was in the same contest Maaru Sira is in now. Did he speak a word about the most renowned independent journo Lasantha’s murder? The answer is no.

How is Maaru Sira different to Fonseka? they are in the same camp now. Maaru Sira has gone to bed with the TNA and the Thambi mafia, but has he spoken a word about media freedom. Not even in his fooking manifesto.

anyone who protest Fonseka’s murder of Lasantha should be voting against Maaru Sira and not for him.

      RIP Lasantha.

Great, if majority would remind this on that day- I was just thiniking about the murder- so would the many – no doubt about that. .. Hope the nation will vote for but the justice/rule of law. Current leader has fallen to all appalling levels in terms of respect to this day – but rural votes decide the country s future. This has been the case from that day on. Hope this will be not the case this time too.

Lasantha’s soul will oust this fake nationalist, fake Sinhala-Buddhist rascal MR and his dirty clan from Lankan politics for ever, on his death anniversary day- January 08th.

Lasantha will live for ever in our hearts and minds….may his soul rest in peace. Let this “Known Devil” and his devilish murderer bro Gota goon go to HELL ! The hell is waiting for these murderers after UNHRC is finished with them !

No one can help Rajapakses now. MR’s looted and plundered billions, KP’s LTTE funds, stolen Tamil people’s gold, Maithri, China-Russia combines or even Lankan Sinhala boot lickers…

Poor guy …and end of the story. Good riddance !!

We need well articulated and fact-finding and investigative journalists.

Unfortunately Lasantha Wickramatunga was murdered by the present regime(Mahinda Rajapaksa) with the help of his brother Gotabaya Rajapaksa.

Both Gotabaya and Mahinda must be responsible for this killing.

Both of them may be now safe now and escape from this guilty verdict BUT
all must remember NO ONE CAN ESCAPE FROM KARMA.

They can not escape from HELL.
They must go through the pain and agony what millions of people went through for eons and eons, not only both Gotabaya and Mahinda , also all who helped them to commit this horrendous act.

surprise surprise that MaRa will not tell that Sirisina was infact the one who ordered to assassinate Lasantha W as that is the low this Rajapaksas can go.

Its time we as Sri Lankans irrespective of party lines to vote for My3 and let these killers to Hague for the killing of Lasantha W whe only voice against the govt that time and the defacto Leader of the Opposition at the time of his death.

Killing Lasantha on the 8th of January did not do much harm to MARA or his brother GOTA. In fact in subsequent elections the people ceded even more power the Rajapaksa family. The thinking within the MARA camp is that January the 8th is a lucky day for them, they can even get away with murder. No wonder they chose January the 8th for the elections. China is the main backer of the MARA regime, and as per Chinese numerology 8 is the luckiest number. Perhaps they too contributed to the choice of Jan 8.

On the 8th of January, it will hit the head pretty hard because all actions have a reaction.

When I saw you near your brothers grave stone memorising and weeping few things comes to mind.

You grieve. The grievance is a momentary contact caused by your mind recollecting. It causes suffering now, yet it shall pass.

What you need to realise is the transient nature of the experience. Its like pouring water into a cup imagining the cup exists. The imagined cup does not exist. So the water simply flows away.

The cup is what you imagined as yourself. As you saw, there is no cup. Therefore the logic follows there is no “you”. Therefore even “your” brother must be something that you imagined isn’t it?

Sit back and observe water continously being poured and then simply melting away. Do not try to own the cup as it does not exist. Experience the bliss that emerge when you de-couple the sensation, perception, feeling, and experience from “you”.

Touched by contact, while fully aware and clearly comprehending, the learned and well trained Noble Disciple correctly understands it as it really is: By the sensitivity of these 6 senses: The eye, ear, the nose, the tongue, the body and the mind, there emerges momentary contact..

From this contact arises instantly both sensation, perception, feeling, and experience! All this is momentary, blinking, and transient. What is momentary, blinking, and transient is impermanent, always and inevitably lost, and therefore ultimately only suffering…

What is impermanent and suffering cannot ever be any self! Therefore a Noble Disciple knows: “This is not mine”, “This is not what I am”, “This is not My Self”… Neither do thoughts of “I am”, nor “I am this”, nor “I am that”, nor “This is Mine”, nor “In the future I will be this or that…” ever occur to such Noble One…

Thus not identifying with anything, such one does not cling to anything, whether internal or external. Therefore, when whatever he does not identify with changes, decays, fades away, and finally vanishes, no panic arises in him, he still remains quite unperturbed, detached, while always fully aware and continuously clearly comprehending: “There is this inevitable Change! All these constructions will fall apart!”… Not clinging means complete mental release! Release means supreme freedom! Freedom means stilled ease of Peace. Peace means sublime Bliss.. This – exactly this – is the end of Suffering! Nibbāna …!

we all condemn the killing of Lasantha . But was he an angel ? The truth about the man also must be remembered when we assess him as a journalist. He was a very virulent and murky character. Not it looks like lasantha’s family is making a cause out of this. But if they care for his memory so much why did lal and family sell the Leader paper to Asanga Seneviratne who is an agent of MR and a full supporter of this government ? Business over principles ?These guys are all the same.

What is conspicuously absent in this whole Lasantha murder case from the outset is any form of investigation or attempt to find the murderer. I happened to be at Attidiya on the day of the murder while the police were still in the area but made no attempt to speak to the scores of willing witnesses or even take their names. There may be some truth to the Gen. Fonseka allegations because as I recall, the witnesses were saying the shooter was on the pillion of a motorbike, and both riders were in Army fatigues and seen returning to the Army barracks nearby where Gen. Fonseka also resided. If the police had made the slightest attempts, they could have apprehended the perpetrators but this alas was a time when Gen. Fonseka was best friends with the Rajapakes.

Lasantha’s murder was the most despicable in the history of our nation and was brazenly carried out on the public highway and attracted worldwide condemnation.
Lasantha predicted as to ‘who will kill him’.
Yet, the investigations were inadequate – the post-mortem report was never revealed.
A post-mortem report reveals the time, manner and cause of death.

Astounding to note the Commander- in- Chief of a country accusing the his Army General for a day light murder, but apparently was not able to charge him as it would demoralize the army. Subsequently, the General was charged and tried by a Kangaroo Court with some phony charges that were sufficient to an extent the General to be humiliated by stripped off his medals and made to serve time in jail but strangely enough not for this serious crime. What is crystal clear is the army being used for extra-judicial killings. Spreading the story that an over the top response had resulted in his death, which was not the intention of the perpetrator and what happened was quite accidental makes both the perpetrator and messenger innocent but blames the victim as he rejected violently or so. Killing is cruel and then to spin story like this makes them all the more professional serial killers and there was no shred of remorse to what they have been doing.

And, we rewarded these murderers in the 2010 President Election with resounding majority to the high office for war crimes they committed. We deserve what we have got. Hope one day Lasantha’s soul will RIP and that will be when the country is freed from these mob’s grip.

    gotabaya and mahinda time over

January 8, 2009: a blood-drenched, day in the media and human rights history of Sri Lanka. A day when tyrannical rulers drunk with power decided they must kill the messenger and let loose their murderous assassins on an unarmed journalist. On that day, my father’s vision for justice and equality ended. The death knell of democracy rang loud and clear.

January 8, 2015: a day when those very persons responsible for Lasantha Wickrematunge‘s death are asking that a grateful and amnesiatic people re-elect them to power so their bloodlust may continue and thrive.
As the daughter of that journalist, since then, January 8 has been the hardest day of the year for me, and now, the sheer audacity of the Sri Lankan government’s decision to hold the presidential election on the 6th anniversary of my father’s murder, is abominable to say the least.

It is no secret who was behind his death and who gave out the orders. It’s public knowledge. And though I speak from a victim’s standpoint, I am also trying to speak out as a Sri Lankan who is greatly concerned for the welfare of her country. And irrespective of the history, politics and differences my family has had with this current regime, I only want what is best for my country and my people.

On my last trip to Sri Lanka about two months ago I was shocked and disgusted at how ridiculously high the cost of living is; I witnessed so much poverty and met so many families whose children go days without a meal. It seemed to me that while the everyday Sri Lankan struggles to educate and feed their children, their rulers are unconscionably living large on taxpayer money and induldging in extravagant expenditures, bribery and vulgar tamashas.

On that note, it really warmed my heart to hear that Opposition Presidential candidate Maithripala Sirisena has declared that certain proceeds from his campaign will go into a fund for kidney patients who can’t afford dialysis treatments.

The only improvements I saw in Sri Lanka seemed to be the beautification programs and the road developments but no amount of quick-fix cosmetic changes will ever justify all the human rights abuses that have and are taking place.

Never in the post-independence histroy of our country has there ever been a leadership that has so much blood and corruption on their hands and brought so much shame to our country’s name. Both Mahinda and Gota continue to take the cake as two of Reporters Without Borders’ Press Freedom Predators. Do not forget that it was this govenrment that was alleged to have deprived civilians in the conflict zone of humanitarian aid during the closing stages of the war. It has systematically attempted to intimidate and silence the media and other critics through a plethora of threats and actions. Only in a totalitarian country like Sri Lanka today would leaders who have been accused of war crimes and crimes against humanity be up for election for another term.

Even though I lost a father I know I’m just one amongst the hundreds of thousands that lost loved ones to the war. My heart goes out especially to the tamil people who continue to grieve in silence. Its time for us all to have some accountability

It is unimaginable that the 8th of January could be an auspicious date for some also considering that It is the birth anniversary of SWRD Bandaranaike and the 6th death anniversary of my father. This 8th of Jan will be even harder because there’s a chance those that took my father’s life will be up for another term. The present President’s astrologer deems it is “auspicious” for him to hold elections on this very same day.

The political party SWRD Bandaranaike founded is in fragments and so was my fathers’ body. Both under the present President who is seeking an unprecedented third term after promising to the people that he would abolish the cursed Executive Presidency.

It was this same President who on several occasions had informed my Uncle Lal that it was Gen Sarath Fonseka who killed my father. There is a case ongoing in the Magistrates Court of Mt Lavinia into my father’s death. I truly hope that he would go that short distance to place such evidence before court. Gen Sarath Fonseka when asked by a reporter from BBC accused the President and his brother Gota of killing my father.

After everything we have gone through as a country pre and post war, I think it’s really time for a change and nine years of what we have been through is enough. Nothing can stand in the way of millions of people calling for change.

If my father hadn’t been slaughtered in a high security zone in broad daylight, there would be no way he would have stayed silent about what has been happening in this “Dhammadeepa”. But of course he was summarily executed so the evils would remain skeletons firmly locked up.

Just like every right-thinking citizen my heart hurts for my country and my people. Let’s do what’s best for our children and our country. The choice to dispense with these blights on society and democracy is in our hands.

    Ahimsa,
Just a word of advise.Your parents named you “Ahimsa” and obviously would have expected you to live upto that ideal. It is one of the 5 Human Values namely Sathya(Truth),Dharma(Righteousness),Shanthi (Peace),Prema(Love) and “Ahimsa”(Non-violence or Loving Kindness) your very name.
I have read above all types of views and opinions expressed by people for a variety of reasons they believe are connected and relevant to your Fathers Life,Work and Death or the manner in which it came about, more pertinently.

Above all of the values referred to above based on my very limited knowledge of him, I believe your Father’s life revolved around his gallant efforts toward standing up for the value Truth as he deemed fit.The last letter he wrote is a work of genius. It will become part of history of this rather sad era in Sri Lanka.
However he has played his part and departed. We are all actors on this big stage of earthly existence playing our multifarious roles in the drama titled “Life”.The love and happiness you would have enjoyed in the company of your family, the anxiety and excitement of your father’s political and journalistic life ,the pain suffering and sense of deep loss that you have experienced at his passing are all part of the script for your roll in this drama. It will end and another and another will begin and conclude and you will go on and play those roles as the script dictates until you reach liberation or enlightenment that is coming to the knowledge of the true nature life and of this world.

The point I wish to make is first the act of forgiveness and of wishing your worst enemy well.Do not forget that the enemy too is a fellow actor in the drama playing his or her role.Non -violence encompasses all actions i.e thoughts, word and deeds. It is sad to see people in this forum attempting to make it a platform for airing their own petty prejudices and grievances and hatreds and in some instances in the most ugly manner. They too are playing their role.
In my view your late Father’s name and memory deserves better, much better.I believe they must be used to develop a forum and a platform for promoting the the right to exercise the freedom of expression by individuals and agencies of the values of upholding “Truth and Justice”particularly aimed at the children and youth. It must come about through the auspices of the meaning of your own name “Ahimsa” by forgiving.
If you discharge this responsibility I have no doubt that you would be able to proudly feel one day that you have lived upto your parents expectations when they named you “Ahimsa” shortly after you emerged from your Mother’s womb a Nameless human being.Names are but labels we put on one another for sparating them for ease of identification but the meaning of name may have real consequences if you live up to them.
May you be well and happy ,May God bless you and give you the strength and courage and the wisdom to fulfill your Names purpose.
    Cheers.
