Despite their stone-cold silence on the anti-Muslim attacks that were instigated by the Bodu Bala Sena (BBS) in Southern Sri Lanka last week, the mahanayake theras have awakened their voice to object to having night races in Kandy.
The mahanayake theras in a letter issued yesterday has called on the President to intervene and ensure the plan to hold the Night Races in Kandy on June 27 and 28 is cancelled.
They have asserted that since the city of Kandy is a place of worship to Buddhists all over the world and is also a UNESCO World heritage site due to its historical and religious importance, holding the night races would be detrimental to the sacredness and pride of the city.
“Therefore we urge you to shed your immediate attention into the issue and ensure steps are taken to cancel the plans for the racing event to be held in this city,” the letter states.
The only mahanayake thera that voiced concern of the anti-Muslim attacks in Aluthgama led by the BBS was Amarapura Chapter Mahanayaka the Ven. Davuldena Gnanissara Thera.
Their rejection of the night races being held in Kandy however was voiced collaboratively by Asgiriya Chapter Maha Nayaka, Ven. Udugama Sri Buddarakkitha Thera, Malawatta Chapter Anu Nayaka, Ven. Niyangoda Wijithasiri Thera, Amarapura Chapter Mahanayaka the Ven. Davuldena Gnanissara Thera as well as Ramanna Nikaya Maha Nayaka the Ven. Napana Premasiri Thera.

Why has not Sobitha Thero who wants to be joint opposition candidate for President spoken out against BBS and the bad name it brings to Buddhism?
Better for him to work on reforming Sinhala Buddhism which has gone astray, rather than trying to reform the country as joint opposition Presidential candidate. First put your own house in order and ask BBS to disband and disrobe GAG!

Sri Lanka is the only country which has “race tracks” in the middle of capital cities – Colombo and Kandy.
Hundreds watch the races by expensive cars – not the Formula One kind which race in international race tracks – but expensive sports/passenger vehicles.
They do so as these are a novelty.
Drivers are scions of rich & privileged families.
This ostentation of wealth is sickening.
The mahanayakes’ objection maybe due to large crowds which would rather watch races,than visit the Maligawa – the prelates appear hurt & disappointed.
Religion is the ‘opium of the masses’ but so are pleasurable/thrilling diversions like car races – even on television.

All it takes is for these Mahanayakes, to speak strongly against these extremists, denouncing them for insulting Buddhism, and declare that what they do is not true Buddhism. I am sorry to see that non of the commentators have at-least the basic teachings of Buddha, which has prompted them to use words such as Satan to run down Buddha. Buddha’s teaching is based on compassion and He had never taught or approved hatred or violence. on the other hand Prophet Mohammed had encouraged his followers to kill, torture and even rape in the name of God and they are elevated to martyrdom. The history reveals the mass massacres done by the Muslim invaders in the name of god, in the once Buddhist countries such as Kashmir, Afghanistan, India,Java, Malaysia and Thailand.There is a growing hatred now among the world in common against the Muslim community, though individually there are very nice good people. Valadmir Putin in Russia, gillard in Australia, obama in Amrica are few good examples.The community rallying round Mosques is the danger just like the Buddhists now rallying round the BBS due to atrocities committed towards the Sri Lankan Buddhist community, even at present.
