Role Of Youth In Reconciliation

By Namal Rajapaksa

Namal Rajapaksa MP

I feel greatly honoured and privileged to be invited to make the keynote address at this seminar on Youth and Reconciliation. That I am being asked to speak at the beginning of a New Year also augurs well because, today all of us could resolve to make the ongoing reconciliation process meaningful. The Lessons Learned and Reconciliation Commission, or the LLRC recommendations are vigorously being pursued with His Excellency Mahinda Rajapaksa having allocated almost a Billion Rupees for 2013.  There is much optimism that bulk of the activities recommended by the LLRC will be completed in 2013.

Being still within the category of youth in Sri Lanka, I believe it is easier for young people like me to understand the importance of reconciliation in the context in which Sri Lanka is placed. Therefore, I wish to thank the Lakshman Kadirgamar Institute for International Relations for giving me this opportunity to share some thoughts on this subject, with this august audience.  Maybe, our collective resolve might even help us  to take the reconciliatory effort of the government to a higher level.

Sri Lanka, since the defeat of terrorism, the only country to do so, has placed much emphasis, in understanding the concept of reconciliation applicable to our situation.  Today, what all Sri Lankans desire is a united Sri Lanka, where all communities live as one nation, under one national flag and not as distinct ethnic communities.  That there is one Sri Lankan nation is the ultimate goal, every one of us want to achieve, in the years to come.  Another goal, we want to achieve is every Sri Lankan citizen to be treated equally with no discrimination to anyone, whether that citizen is a Sinhalese, a Tamil, a Muslim or from any other ethnic group. In other words, there will not be discrimination on anyone just because a person does not belong to the majority community that is Sinhalese.  In fact, those who want to discredit Sri Lanka have used this in a vicious manner.

Most conflicts are the results of adults contributing to certain misconceptions and in fact creating them.  The irony of all these, post conflict reconciliatory effort is that it falls on the shoulders of young people  to make it happen.  Another unfortunate outcome of any conflict is that it is the youth, women and children, who have to bear the brunt of the ill effects of conflicts and in fact become the key players when it comes to reconciliation.  But what the society must understand is that youth who fall victim to ideological campaigns, masterminded by adults are finally labeled as militants and when they are asked to be agents of peace and reconciliation it becomes extremely difficult, for youth to switch to new paradigms quickly.  Post conflict reconciliation takes a long time to happen on ground and youth need to be patient in being key actors of this national effort.

If one delves, into the causes of the three decade old terrorist conflict one sees, that the LTTE was able to convince the larger Tamil community that the Sinhalese always discriminated the Tamils and that only way to solve their issues was to carve out a separate state for themselves.  It is in this context we need to be looking at reconciliation, as being so important.  Let us earnestly ask ourselves whether, we, as a nation, have failed to convince every citizen that he or she is not being discriminated?

Young people are the best group to eliminate this misconception for they are the leaders of tomorrow.  A Sinhalese youth or a Tamil youth, or for that matter a Muslim youth should not feel constrained whatsoever to forge links with each other.  As youth, we have a notion in life and that is to be treated equally on matters of life and society. Whether it is access to education, livelihood or any other matter, involved with day-to-day life no youth should feel that he or she is being discriminated.  If as perceived by certain ethnic communities, that they were discriminated then, it is time for us to remedy that situation at the earliest.

One advantage the young people have, in ensuring that we are a nation that has come to terms with issues connected to reconciliation is that they do not carry baggage.  What do I mean by baggage here?  We youth do not have pre-conceived notions about ethnicity, or any other divisive parameter.  Let me take an example, close to my heart.  In the field of Sports which is fully dominated by young people we see this noble concept at work.  Most, if not all sports are the exclusive preserve of young people.  I cannot think of any discrimination, on the lines of ethnicity or such like in my preferred game Rugby, a game mostly played by young people.  What mattered was whether, one was an accomplished player and nothing else.  I strongly believe that Sports could be a vehicle to inculcate the spirit of reconciliation, among youth.

Being nearly 40% of the population youth will have an enormous role to play in fostering reconciliation, in this battered nation.  If there are misconceptions, that have been sown by separatist elements such misconceived ideas, need to be eliminated not just by word, but by deed and our actions.  Many young Tamils from the North and East in all probability may have not met their Sinhalese brethren.  In my many visits to the North and the East, I experienced this sad situation.  To many, it may look very strange, and also unbelievable but my first-hand experience convinces me that there were many Tamil youth, who had never met a Sinhalese.  That’s what terrorism, perpetrated by the LTTE did to a whole community of Tamil youth.

Of course, there must be a common medium to communicate with each other when a young Tamil meets a young Sinhalese.  Either the Sinhalese must learn to speak in Tamil or vice versa.  Or else, both communities must learn English, a world language that brings communities together. The younger generation must lay more emphasis in learning the national languages of our motherland.

In his vision for this country and its youth this is the very reason why H.E Mahinda Rajapaksa, our President declared  that by 2021, our nation must be trilingual.  I am glad that the Presidential Task Force on the Trilingual Initiative has made much progress having identified the basics of learning, the other National language meaning, Sinhalese for Tamils and Tamil for Sinhalese.  Learning a language for young people is so very important not just for career progress but also as ambassadors of good will, in a battered nation.  To foster brotherhood and the feeling of being one strong resilient nation young people of different ethnic origins must communicate freely without feeling hampered, by the lack of knowledge of the language of the other.

It is also my wish that young people of different ethnic origins should have the opportunity to mix with each other, while they are in school.  Fortunately, I had my primary and secondary education, in a school where children of all communities mixed together, in all curricular and extra-curricular activities.  That has given me the insights of the value, of living in a multi-ethnic, multi-religious society.  Undoubtedly, it has enriched my outlook towards life because, diversity always adds to one’s knowledge.

Therefore, rather than having Sinhala or Tamil or Muslim Maha Vidyalas in multi ethnic areas  there must be schools that have children of all communities  and there cannot be a better way, to forge links among each other.  School is the best place to bring about the feeling of being a part, of one united nation.  Young people of different age groups will grow up together having respect for each other and learning to communicate with each other.  There cannot be misunderstandings when they grow up to be adults.

The reason why, youth are the best to achieve reconciliation in our country and build one united nation is therefore very clear  needing little explanation or clarification.  It is not because they are unencumbered  and therefore, have more time, to devote for building bridges  it is also because, they have the best mind sets  to reason out and eliminate any discriminatory practices  that either destroy reconciliatory effort or  foster division among our people.  Talking about bridges, being built between communities what we do here, is not understood by many global players.  Take examples from many parts of the world where reconciliation is talked about.  Rather than building bridges, they would build walls to keep communities apart. On the contrary, our government has endeavoured through its 3 R’s programme, that is, Rebuilding, Rehabilitation and Reconciliation to win the hearts and minds of people, of all ethnic origins living within Sri Lanka.  The 3 R’s approach has enabled us to build bridges among different ethnic groups.

In conclusion, I wish to emphasize that the youth have an enormous responsibility to ensure that reconciliation, becomes a great success in this battered nation and I am certain that our youth will ensure that incidents such as the ones that destroyed our nation will never happen in the future because our youth today are empowered to lead this nation, as one united team.  Youth are the life blood of a country and the perceptions they carry into their adulthood will determine whether, that nation will prosper or not.

Thank you and may the year 2013 be a watershed for youth of Sri Lanka.  All the very best to all of you.

LANKA’S NEW WAR, that this foolish moron’s uncle, Gota the white van goon was dreaming about and preparing for by militirizing the country has begun with the impeachment of the CJ! This time it is the people verses the Rajapassa regime of uneducated thugs, thieves, criminals and leftist geriatrics, and this clown Namal Passapassa says in his child like innocence and wisdom says here:
“Most conflicts are the results of adults contributing to certain misconceptions and in fact creating them”.
Clearly this foolish moron, Namal Rajapassa, fancies himself a child since he blames conflicts on the very adults, like his dad and uncles who have provided him with expensive (toy) cars like lamburghinis to race around the country while the war rages on!

    Son

all this looks very impressive, smart in your chic appearance and attire –

but good speeches are dime a dozen – we have enough orators – yes even Ranil can still make a good speech and impress the gullible

from today – we will believe ACTIONS – SRI LANKANS HAVE HAD THEIR FILL OF WORDS – and those with brains will now take the path of actions

you can say what you like – and do what you like

This is also our country and we will create our future (and those of our children) – with actions

from tomorrow we will not allow our future to be decided by a small group of cowards

It is shameful for this organization to have invited Namal to give a speech. As if they could not find some one suitable. Namal’s suitableness comes only from the fact that he is President’s son. If Namal truly believes in the power of the youth, what is he going to do about the illegal impeachment of CJ?

I am beginning to wonder whether VP had a long term hidden agenda when he helped MR to win the elections.

VP’s support to MR had set in motion a destructive force which slowly but surely destroying the fabric of Sinhala society.

How did he manage to come up with such an idea, though the man is no more, his strategy seems to be paying dividends?

Like father, son also improperly got the law degree and Bar admission using the status with out properly studying and sitting exams like everybody else. It is shame that he was invited to speak in prestigious place like Kadirkamar Institute. Both are being so called “Lawyers” but acting and thinking against the Sri Lankan constitution and rule of law.

In fairness, I must say that this rowdy rugby player can READ what is written but cannot understand the nature, effect and content of what is written. I agree both father and son got their so-called professional qualification in law without studying and sitting for exams like everybody else? Get lost puppy!!

    Now he talks of ‘equality’.
Mostly 6th Std qualified armymen have been appointed to schools in the north,to teach sinhala as second language to children IN PLACE OF english – but, he talks of ‘languages bringing communities together’!

Son, can you let us know how your daddy treated Rule of Law., or can you give us an interpretation of what is Rule of Law. Can you explain how a decision of the Supreme Court should be respected and what to do if hooligans violate such decision of the Court. Moreover, can your ask your uncle Chamal what is meant by Principles of Natural Justice. Do you know how the late L.Kadirgamar respected the decisions of the Courts. Can you also give the meaning of Terrorism and State Terrorism. By the way have you ever practiced Law to speak about all these subjects. Do you know that prior to 1970s Sinhalese and Tamils were together in the Universities and participated in all activities in a spirit of friendship and now you are speaking that Tamils have not met Sinhalese. You and your daddy can cheat for sometime, but not always. Remember there is Karma which will backfire and noone will come to rescue your family. First learn to obey the courts.

      AP,

We foist these invites on ourselves, because we plan these things carefully. We need a platform for our prodigal son to be hoisted so as to raise his image internationally.

We have soulless men prepare lifeless speeches that the average man on the street doesn’t understand. The few pseudo intellectuals on CT are easily out numbered by the Sinhala Bhuddist Nationalists.

We calculate that CT can do us no harm.

Namal – I am glad that you have come to a very august assembly and delivered a speech very appropriate in relation to the youth of this country. It is now a fashion to deliver speeches at every opportunity a politician gets and of course completely forget what they are in real life practising. I hope you get what I am hinting at. In one instant, when you were accommodataed in an air-conditioned room with electronic divices at your disposal to sit the Law College final exmination while all others were sitting in a common hall, denied of using such devices. how and what did you feel? Did you not feel that is out of ordinary and as a “youth” did you not get the message that all are not given the equal opportunity and did you not get the feel of “reconciliation” with the rest of the candidates? This is one among so many that the youth of this country already know of you and so to speak of all the polticians.

My friend, one advice to you: Please, before you go to sleep, devote at least five minitues to meditate upon each days of your “work and behaviour” and question yourself as to whether the day has been spent as guided by your own religion. Do this honoustly and don’t deceive yourself. As time goes by, you will surely be an exemplary “youth”if you organize your “work and behaviour” according to the tenets of your religion.

I wish you all the best.

Your government allocated 290 billion rupees ($US2.2 billion) to the combined Defense and Urban Development Ministry with an increase of 26%. The war was declared over with the annihilation of LTTE. 150,000 soldiers are deployed in the north of the country to suffocate the local population that lost almost everything they owned. Even if the allocated 1 million rupees were utiliced without corruption how can the losses be compensated.

The sons, daughters and husbands surrendered to or arrested by the military and their whereabouts are still not made available to the loved ones. The military occupies the houses of ordinary citizens and tens of thousands of IDPs are scared to return to their own areas because of the brutality of the military. The military arrests students and beat journalists. How can reconciliation is possible under duress?

Gig – slang for a musical engagement in which musicians are hired. Originally coined in the 1920s by jazz musicians, the term, short for the word “engagement”, now refers to any aspect of performing such as assisting with performance and attending musical performance. More broadly, the term “gigging” means having paid work, being employed.

Buck – The adult male of some animals, such as the deer, antelope, or rabbit.

The 24-year-old MP is frequently taken on foreign trips by his father. In January he was dispatched to Libya to deliver a formal invitation for Muammar Qaddafi to visit Sri Lanka , to improve the “strong personal relationship” between the two country’s leaders.

At home excuses are rustled up to keep him in the limelight. Last month he dispensed the man-of-the-match award at Sri Lanka’s opening game of the cricket world cup, which took place in a newly built stadium in—by happy coincidence—his own constituency, Hambantota, in the south of the country. A few days earlier the portly young politician had been shown laying a foundation stone for a new office complex, funded by the Asian Development Bank; just before that he was named chairman of a new fund to protect a forest and an ancient pink quartz mountain range, the National Namal Uyana.

He is on hand to inaugurate new bridges and roads. As the head of a national body, Tharunyata Hetak (“aspiring youth”), he is whisked north—a chopper is usually on call—to dish out cash, books and other aid to victims of the civil war. His group has its own television channel, which shows him doing the dishing. He enjoys fawning—sorry, perceptive—coverage from state press and broadcasters.

His year-long political career has been charmed. His constituency, a Rajapaksa family stronghold since the 1930s, has been chosen as the site of a new international airport, a conference centre, hotels and other big projects. In November he officiated with his father at the opening of a large, Chinese-built harbour in Hambantota. Now young Mr Rajapaksa, charming, London-educated and fond of rugby, is leading a bid for Hambantota to host the 2018 Commonwealth games.

My Dear MP. Master. Namal Rajapakse,

Please visit the following two web sites that I have highlighted in this response, and please let me have your honest Comments.

    Thank You.

Please watch the following web to see how ex.CJ Sarath N.Silva who Duped and manupulated Law to reduce ex.President Chandrika Kumaratunga’s term by one year after she helped him appointed as CJ, and also how he manupulated LAW for MARA to get away from impeaching for Tsunami Robbery.

    http://www.srilankaguardian.org/2013/01/the-silva-factor-what-went-wrong.html

Also invariably the writer say how Sarath Silva shiponed Rs: 15 Million from Tsunami donation scandal as santhosam for job well done.

Please watch the following interview ex.CJ Sarath Silva had with Derana TV, while talk about President Rajapakse’s Tsunami Scandle….and the Hedging deal which President Rajapakse is the Instigator of that gamble and who should bare US One Billion Loss on that deal……and what a smart (Crook) person the President is.

    http://www.derana.lk/index.php?route=programs/programs/programdetails&pid=85&vid=5582&page=2

This is the reason Why President now feel shy to ask for International Help for the current Flood Victims due to the guilt of Tsunami Robbery.

Therefore the only people who suffer now are those people who lost everything from floods, while some have not got any relief from Govt. upto now…..and not the MARA National Patriotic LOOTERS.

While making Poor and the middle class even Poorer and without providing them with Jobs, MARA is sending them to Middle East as Slave Labor to bring in Foreign exchange and with that foreign exchange MARA crook is Importing BMW’s, Mercedes Benz, Aston Martins, SUV’s and Lamborginis to give away to his sons, family members, supporters, buddhist preletes, both his and opposition MP’s to lure them to him, Reporters,Party Lawyers and Judges, Party goons, Forces, Police and security Personnel and general Public who support him to stay in power.

This is the way Fuc….ing MARA rule the country.

It is time to send MARA Mot…..er Fuc……er to Middle east to bring in Foreign Exchange……..and ask IMF, WB and other Institutes to stop giving Loans to MARA Crook.

*****I still think I can protect my self and my family Better than those Police Constables who are working only for Bribes and Pin Padi under your father’s instructions, not to take action against those Hooligans attacked innocent helpless CJ supporters.

Next time we will have our drama in your Home town Medamulana…Hambanthota.

    Mee Haraka.

Please let me have your comments to prove your Father’s and Ex. Crook CJ Sarath N. Silva.

Like he cribbed at the law exam he is reading someones speech using a teleprompter. SAFA! How happy Hudson would be because of your misquote. R. Premadasa knew him as a raucous moron with some reading and vocabulary (not English). Any average man with an ambition (like Modawansa, Mahinda Abeyasundara…etc) can become a Beththel Karaya on pavement and dupe ordinary people. Their luck is their association with politics for a long time and third world audience. Otherwise they all would have remained in the pavement. I don’t know anything about Lucian as I never felt like reading his columns. Hudson is never capable of things in this standard. Only difference between a pavement and political Beththel Karaya is the place they practice the job. But I strongly believe they both are extremely vicious callous destructive characters.
