“All Sri Lankans, irrespective of their religious belief’s have high hopes of living a peaceful life in our blessed country after over three decades of conflict. We are confident that under your Excellency’s able leadership, this dream could certainly be a reality.” says the President of the Muslim Council of Sri Lanka, N M Ameen.
Referring to the recent attacks on religious places, the Muslim Council president, Journalist and media activist NM Ameen, who also applied and was granted Rs. 1,200,000/- of interest free government loan from a state bank to purchase car or van, where the interest will be paid by the Treasury using tax payer money says; “We thank you, your Excellency for your immediate attention and look forward to a complete halt to the threat to the minorities by these extremist groups.”
We publish below the statement in full;
16th January 2014
His Excellency Mahinda Rajapakshe
President,
Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka Presidential Secretariat
Galle Face,
Colombo 1
Your Excellency,
Re: Attacks on places of religious worship of minorities.
We wish to draw your Excellency’s kind attention to the mob attack on Assemblies of God and the Calvary church in Hikkaduwa (Galle District) while the congregation was engaging in peaceful worship services on the 12th of January 2014. The unruly mob led by some Buddhist monks blatantly infringed on the peoples right to worship.
This is not the first incident of this nature and the police who were present could not prevent these elements from causing havoc at a place of religious worship. Certain Buddhist monks, publicly claiming to be the un-official police continue to intimidate the minorities. This has become a growing trend and has gone unchecked.
The Muslim community too has faced many situations of violence, harassment and intimidation by extremist Buddhist groups. Up to now, the police have not made any arrests in any of these incidents.
We kindly urge your Excellency to order the law enforcement agencies to rein-in these mobs that infringe on the peoples fundamental right to worship. Should there be any breach of law by any individual or groups, we kindly urge that due process is followed and necessary legal action is taken without letting individuals or religious groups to take the law in to their own hands.
All Sri Lankans, irrespective of their religious belief’s have high hopes of living a peaceful life in our blessed country after over three decades of conflict. We are confident that under your Excellency’s able leadership, this dream could certainly be a reality.
We thank you, your Excellency for your immediate attention and look forward to a complete halt to the threat to the minorities by these extremist groups.
Yours truly,
N M Ameen
President,
Muslim Council of Sri Lanka

I am not saying that he should not take up isue of other communities.
my question is why did he keep quiet when the mosques were attcked and suddenly wake up now?
is it a diplomatic way to say to the president “…this dream could certainly be a reality.”
why is that all people of all religion race and language living in harmony in Sri Lanka suddenly has become a dream?
We were living peacefulluy all these years.
why does he choose the word dream?
he could have said we hope you will restore the peace anf prosperity back?
did Mahinda or Gota ask him to use the word dream?
or is Ameen an idiot and agreed to relase the letter with his signature without reading it.

Perhaps, you are not aware that the Muslim Council has taken-up with the President and the Govt. of Sri Lanka every attack on Mosques and other issues concerning the Muslims. The Council is the umbrella body of over fifty-two leading Muslim organisations in Sri Lanka. The Council, since its inception soon after the Tsunami has become an active organization representing the Muslims and it is doing a good job. The last two sentences, it could agreed, are disputable but the fact that the Council has taken-up the issue of another religious group should be appreciated. It is necessary there could be short-comings when good efforts are made which should be met with constructive criticism than total condemnation. What has loan taken, like every other journalist, by Ameen got to do with this letter. He has surely written it on the decision of the Council as its President and not in his individual capacity.

I assume that you must be representing at least more than your ownself. Dearest, while you live cozy life and earning sterling pounds on hourly basis. Besides you live in a reasonably democratic place to practice the deen of ours. Just because you live in a relatively easy life, please do not make a simple assumption that SL muslim’s live in a paradisian life.
You ONLY understand what is chruned out in the media (i.e. People like NM Ameen does the dirty work) saying the Muslims live in peacefuly in this country. Of course we live here, but not peacefuly. May be we can call it relative peace. We are being systamaticaly surpressed to depreved our genarations enjoyed religiuos freedom. Our children are being systamaticaly introduced towards drugs and other abuse. Our women are being systamaticaly forced to have LRT procedures, etc. We can go on for more.
The point here is the journos like NM Ameen are trying to white-wash the regime, for a pot of gold ( I mean actulay a mere few millions)
Please take these guys for granted, just because they partnered with you for some social work. Beacause they were hundreds of organs who have done the same thing and yet did not tried misuse the credits, what was due to them.

LankaMuslim, all citizens of our country must be genuinely
free from undue political influences,in judging the
actions of any political party and especially the party
in power. When such a thing is impossible not only in
our country, almost all of the third world, the
organizations created to represent public interest, have
a mammoth task on their shoulders,to act according to
what their hearts say on a given situation. We are now
internationally known for media harassment.in such an
environment, journalist accepting gifts and loans offered
by allegedly wrong doing party, will disturb their
conscience prompting partiality in reporting and writing.
It is wrong in my opinion for a govt to publicly offer
such a facility to the media and double wrong for the
media to accept that kind of a gesture.Already we see
the result in this article.

Ameen took that loan but he wrote a letter to the President requesting the President to intervene. In the letter he mentions
“This is not the first incident of this nature and the police who were present could not prevent these elements from causing havoc at a place of religious worship. Certain Buddhist monks, publicly claiming to be the un-official police continue to intimidate the minorities. This has become a growing trend and has gone unchecked.

“We kindly urge your Excellency to order the law enforcement agencies to REIN_IN these mobs that infringe on the peoples fundamental right to worship. Should there be any breach of law by any individual or groups, we kindly urge that due process is followed and necessary legal action is taken without letting individuals or religious groups to take the law in to their own hands”.
I do not see the above para as mild. Readers are selectively looking at the last sentence. HAS THE JOURNALISTS WHO DID NOT TAKE THE LOAN OR OTHER CIVIL SOCIETY ORGANISATIONS WRITE EVEN A MILD LETTER TO THE PRESIDENT ON THIS ISSUE.
I urge the forum members to write a strong letter or take necessary action to stop the attack on minorities, without taking to violence without attacking Ameen and his organisations.
/

As Priya says lets look at his letter positively and improve it.I am happy that Muslims are supporting attacks on other religious places.
As suggested by this writer, do a better job. Can readers of this column write a stronger note to the President on this issue, instead of wasting valuable time, energy and CT space on mud slinging.
Having said this Ameen being in a responsible position shouldn’t have taken this loan. Letter he wrote is mild but he at least wrote that and I didn’t see other religious forums or civil society take up the issue on attacking the churches. Even the Catholic church is silent.

I agree with Bahadari. When we had the previous voting system ie before the PR system, we voted for candidates without looking at their race or religion. Those Sinhalese and Muslims MPs gave similar importance to issues of all sections of the population.
Now Muslims are encouraged to vote for the Muslims and Sinhalese are discouraged from voting for the Thambiya.
We need to choose a good candidate, let it be Muslim, Sinhalese or Tamil. Choose a candidate who is not involved in drug and alcohol business and other vices. All these Muslim MPs including Faizer Mustapha voted for the Casino bill in 2010 and they call themselves religious. Rauf Hakeem campaigned against the government and joined the government later on.

It’s pathetic to put ones trust in Politicians. It’s quite evident that most Politicians want to fill their own pockets and leave the country to the next generation to meet its debt obligations. Sri Lankans should forget about politics and politicians and start developing their individual skills / resources to the good of the country. Having met most of them here, the only person who works tirelessly is the elder statesmen Mr. Fowzie who commands a lot of respect in Arabia. However unfortunately those who surround him are questionable.
Asking politicians to save the economy is like asking Bernie Madoff to manage our household budget and John Wayne to entertain our young children. Politicians by their very nature and their very presence distort/destroy/sodomize economic order. Politicians create law after law to alter human action and the resulting human interactions we label an “economy”. Politicians also steal from the unborn and create economic distortions in the future, kind of like meddling time travellers. Then there is the power they grant to the central bank, literally the mother of all economic screw ups.

Sirasa would field candidates and then make them change parties like Ranga.. So I would not vote for persons supported by Ranga. Sirasa is into dirty politics. UNP has problems but Sirasa as a stooge of the government made it worse by highlighting the differences between Sajith and Ranil etc etc,
At least other channels show their party affiliations openly, but Sirasa does not show its true colours. Voting for Sirasa is voting for the Rajapaksas

Can u remember that female singer ? if you don’t just forget about it since
That shows true face of Muslims. Muslims need only to protect themselves. They preach unity and harmony when they get attacked.
Recall:
“Api marakkala on those days”

I think this journo and activist has also been bitten by R……..a bug. Not that any of his achievements have any significant value to the Muslim Community at large. He too is among the many self proclaimed leaders who have taken this Muslim Community to the cleaners along with the theologian group who have at the receiving end a few months ago.
The various attacks and humiliation conferred upon this society has gone unnoticed or ignored by the powers that be due to racist policies of two prominent wings of the majority religion.
The basic rights of the muslim community in ways of prayers and practice of religion and the proporgation of ones’ religion is the basic tenet of mankind..’religion gives meaning and purpose to human life’. The code of conduct as required by the ‘Quran’ with regard to prayer, dress and food is being infringed upon and yet the powers are not able to stem the rot when it should have been nipped in the bud.
In spite of all these happenings and other events unfolding which is causing distressed and unease, it is surprising that this journalist is making a statement ‘ of a peaceful life under…………leadership’of todays’ regime.
The muslims’ have been sold out by their own politician of both sides and and getting back to reality is far sighted effort.
and other the other hand…when one( the receiver) gets a loan from a Peter on interest free and if a Paul pays Peter the interest for the loan of the receiver…..the receiver should well know that he is not absolved from the interest and is part and parcel of the deal…lest.. the journo forgets or is ignorant.
Finally, i would like to know how peacefully would the muslim community be able to survive if they were too, to react in the same manners as that of the provacators.
He should think what is best of him and not take refugee under the muslim community to make personal gain.

Can anybody explain me why should any citizen, be them sinhala, tamil or other minorities of the country beg the president of the state ? Is it not president´s job to fulfil his duties as given in the constutuion; that is nothing else than treat every citizen equally.
This is a very pathetic situation the country is fallen to this day- president deserves to be hung to have created this kind of situation.
It is beyond being trecherous. If Gota said that they would hang SF, if could proved to have betrayed the nation.

Many in the country dare to say that european democracies dont respect basic democratic values; like rule of law, safeguarding basic human rights, equal and unbiased reaction of the police.
But if the attacks similar to Hikkaduwa lately were the case in Germany, Netherlands, Switzerland, the UK or even in many of the eastern eureopean countries, they would have unequivocally gone against the thugs impartially – without delay. All the kind of actions are very high and rich in Germany and Switzerland. Sometimes, within few hours, they the authorities will fulfil their duties. That is what I LOVE most in this part of the world.
It will decades a century to achieve such values in our country under the current leadership, though he has great potential to achieve these values since his ruling coalition is a mixture of various parties/political groups. If he could encourage them for the betterment of the nation – each of those groups will have to work on the law and order; I have no doubt the opposition under the lead of Ranil W would not disgree with any genuine efforts made to work on that foundation. Law and order is the foundation- like no house can be made without a properly set foundation.
