Referring to the recent attacks on religious places, the Muslim Council president, Journalist and media activist NM Ameen, who also applied and was granted Rs. 1,200,000/- of interest free government loan from a state bank to purchase car or van, where the interest will be paid by the Treasury using tax payer money says; “We thank you, your Excellency for your immediate attention and look forward to a complete halt to the threat to the minorities by these extremist groups.”

Re: Attacks on places of religious worship of minorities.
We wish to draw your Excellency’s kind attention to the mob attack on Assemblies of God and the Calvary church in Hikkaduwa (Galle District) while the congregation was engaging in peaceful worship services on the 12th of January 2014. The unruly mob led by some Buddhist monks blatantly infringed on the peoples right to worship.
This is not the first incident of this nature and the police who were present could not prevent these elements from causing havoc at a place of religious worship. Certain Buddhist monks, publicly claiming to be the un-official police continue to intimidate the minorities. This has become a growing trend and has gone unchecked.
The Muslim community too has faced many situations of violence, harassment and intimidation by extremist Buddhist groups. Up to now, the police have not made any arrests in any of these incidents.
We kindly urge your Excellency to order the law enforcement agencies to rein-in these mobs that infringe on the peoples fundamental right to worship. Should there be any breach of law by any individual or groups, we kindly urge that due process is followed and necessary legal action is taken without letting individuals or religious groups to take the law in to their own hands.

Discussions on a matter of public importance should focus on the relevant issues involved which would help even a new participant to understand the issue. If the approach is otherwise it would only mislead all and would serve no useful purpose. In the given issue it has to be understood that ‘the letter is from the Muslim Council of Sri Lanka’ and ‘Ameen has signed it as it’s President’. As far as it is known the letter was drafted by a responsible collective body of the MCSL and, as decided by that body, Ameen has signed the letter as the President of the MCSL and not in his personal capacity as a ‘Journalist’. While the last two paras of the letter certainly are debatable according to ones own thinking, the main contents of the letter has conveyed to the President, as the Head of the State, whether one may like it or not, ‘the seriousness’ of the incidents. Is there anything wrong in the MCSL, a civil Society organisation, which in recent times in the forefront of Muslim affairs, conveying such a message. That is the crux of the matter, but the ‘caption’ of the article is misleading and seems to be intended to ‘launch a personal attack’ on Ameen; perhaps done due to some animosity of the Colombo Telegarph Editor/Editors. While the MCSL, on behalf of the Muslims, is making an effort to engage and take interest on issues concerning other Communities and on wider issues in the country, which efforts were absent within the Muslim civil society upto recent times and is a new development, meaningless attacks of this nature would only drive away those engaging in such efforts. Therefore, it is necessary that criticism, as in all matters, on matters relating to Muslims and Muslim organisation too should be constructive and not be destructive and hope that Colombo Telegraph and others concerned will take this into mind.
