Namal Rajapaksa Goes To School(s)

By Tisaranee Gunasekara

“And these deeds were not committed by outlaws, monsters of raving sadists but by the most respected members of respectable society.” – Hannah Arendt (Responsibility and Judgement)

Why was parliamentarian Namal Rajapaksa allowed to promote a Carlton Rugby tournament in government schools, during school hours?[i]

Namal ErajThis week, the younger Rajapaksa, together with a singer, visited three leading national schools – Visakha Vidyalaya, DS Senanayake Vidyalaya and Sirimavo Bandaranaike Vidyalaya – with the permission of their principals. The visitors reportedly distributed promotional T shirts, sang and asked the students to dance. It was only at Sirimavo Bandaranaike Vidyalaya did they encounter any resistance. Several teachers and prefects reportedly objected to this irregular conduct and are now being threatened.

According to Iraj Weeraratne, the singer accompanying Rajapaksa fils, they faced no impediments at Sirimavo Bandaranaike Vidyalaya. Responding to a question by Ravaya, he says he sang the Cricket World Cup theme-song and just “two lines of the song ‘Sweety Menika’….the rest of the song was sung by the girls while dancing”[ii].

The full song is available on the You Tube[iii]; these are the first two lines:

‘Kalu naughty kella sweetie Menika mage

Mama onna awa umma umma onè’

(A rough translation would read – My dark naughty girl Sweetie Menika, I am here and I want kisses)

Were these the lines the singer sang to the girls, inside the school, in front of the principal, during school hours?

Taste is an individual matter. This song is probably popular. It is perhaps much sung even on school trips. Those are extrinsic issues. But is this the sort of song school children should sing, in school, during school hours, and in front of their principal?

What sort of principal would tolerate such conduct?

Carlton Sports Club, according to its own Facebook page, is the sports wing of ‘Tharunyata Hetak’[iv]. Tharunyata Hetak was set up by Namal Rajapaksa to create an entrée for himself into politics and to bolster his father’s rule. During the Presidential election of 2010, Tharunyata Hetak reportedly “reserved 4,616 TV slots and 2,245 radio slots”, to promote the candidacy of Mahinda Rajapaksa[v].

Tharunyata Hetak therefore is a non-governmental organisation with a partisan political agenda.

Namal Rajapaksa should never have been permitted to enter government schools, during school hours, to promote a non-state sports tournament organised by a politically partisan NGO. Execrable though his conduct is, young Mr. Rajapaksa is not the main culprit. Given the nature of the Rajapaksa agenda and the Rajapaksa ethos, one cannot expect any member of the Ruling Family to act with discipline, decorum or decency. Namal Rajapaksa was obviously doing what comes naturally to him.

What about the rest of us?

Why did the three principals permit the visits, in gross violation of rules, norms and the best interest of their students? For instance, Mrs. Motwani, Mrs. Pullimood, Mrs. Jayasinghe, all their predecessors and most of their successors at Visakha would not have permitted such an incident, even if a refusal meant a punishment transfer, the loss of a job or worse. The craven conduct of the present principal of Visakha and the other two principals is symbolic of how far we have fallen, as a society.

Some of the teachers at Sirimavo Bandaranaike had objected to the visit and ordered the visitors out – reportedly. Why didn’t the teachers and the masters of the other two schools act in a similar manner? (I cannot think of a single teacher of my acquaintance, either at Visakha or elsewhere, who would have permitted such an outrage under their watch.) Their gross dereliction of duty, as guardians and guides of their pupils, is indicative of a society-wide moral and ethical abnegation.

Why aren’t parents objecting to their children being treated in this manner? Did the Minister of Education, permit this visit? Does this sort of visit happen, in less well known schools away from Colombo? Will the Opposition bring this up in parliament and demand an inquiry? What does the President, the self-anointed guardian of national morals, feel about the conduct of his firstborn?

More pertinently, why didn’t this story make banner headlines in the national media? The visits are not mere rumours; they have been confirmed by the visitors themselves. For instance, there is a picture of Namal Rajapaksa and Iraj Weeraratne with a group of Visakhians and a tweet which says ‘Thank you for the support extended’. Why did this headline news turn into total non-news nationally? What does this collective silence on the part of the national media say about media freedom and media culture in this country?

Abusive rulers cannot succeed without craven societies.

The Road to Hell

In February 2008, Carlton Sports Club held a car race, Carlton Motorcross, in Hambantota. It was organised by Namal Rajapaksa’s Tharunyata Hetak. Around 1,800 policemen and 800 soldiers were deployed to provide security to this extravaganza: “The highlight was the stalls that represented the military depicting their weaponry and achievement in the war against Tiger guerrillas. They were transported to the venue after being hurriedly dismantled from the Deyata Kirula exhibition”[vi].

Tharunyata Hetak is a non-governmental organisation. But the military acted as if it was a fully-fledged state entity. And this was when Gen. Sarath Fonseka was Army Commander. Sadly, like the principals of the three state schools, Gen Fonseka permitted this gross violation of rules and norms, if not laws, to happen. He allowed the Rajapaksas to use the national army under his command as their Praetorian Guard. Eventually, Gen. Fonseka and his entire family had to suffer the consequences of his willingness to permit the partisan politicisation of a national entity. When he became a political opponent of the Rajapaksas, the army treated him like a traitor to the nation.

Last year a provincial politician barged into a school and ordered the teacher who disciplined his child to kneel in front of the entire class. This week a key witness in the case was murdered and his body dumped in an abandoned well. Even the police admit that there might be a connection between the murder and the victim’s courageous willingness to testify against the powerful politician.

The politician thought he had a right to enter a government school and humiliate a teacher. That belief would have been sourced in two malaises which were always present in Lankan society but has assumed plague proportions under Rajapaksa Rule: the erosion of the lines of demarcation between the state and the rulers; and impunity.

The ruling family has set an example, treating state entities like private fiefs. Their minions are following suit. Namal Rajapaksa’s conduct will be noted by his acolytes and repeated, in an even more objectionable way, in other schools.

What happened at Visakha, DS and Sirimavo yesterday can happen in other schools tomorrow. L’affaire Namal is symbolic of the occupation of Lankan state and society by the Rajapaksas and the resultant erosion of independent/autonomous spaces and institutional decay.

A country with a degenerated educational system will produce not decent and honourable citizens but cowardly and self-serving automata, who will never ask why; just how much. That is how tyrannies and crime-hubs are made.

    ‘Namal Rajapaksa Goes To School’

My advise is the entire Rajapaksa clan have to go to school again.
Starting right from the nursery is recommended.

Ego, Complex, Sickness, Jealousy, Moda-choon, Showoff, hatred, Greed and Anger etc etc etc are all due to lack of education.

I think his Father should take his MP Son to a good Doctor. Not the kind of Doctor like Dr. Mervin Silva. We suggest that he should take treatment from Good “Harak Weda” in Horana as this Guy always doing Harak Wada like having Night Car Races closing Colombo Roads, Having Night Car Races near Dalada Maligawa etc.

      This is ver right.
His father should start the nursery when comparing with all the leaders sofar we had in lanken history.
No vision and wisdom is seen in MR admistration – these days, srilanka s advert on CNN makes me further clear that how many millions of dollars that the MR regime just wastes sometimes for no reason. It is said the millions that the regime wasted to have speeches written through advert companies in Washington are that much. It is all because not learnt and educated candidates are appointed to represent the nation there. What matters for MR regime is to appoint any low grade persons to do the job for them, so at the very basic step on, those who are aware, are well aware of they would end up with all problems rather than solving any of them.

Did you NOTICE that the boy has unequal teeth in his lower jaw. This is unbelievable for a president son who creates all sound exposures by introducing NIGHT CAR RACES to lanken street corners – while not having a proper dentist to have his teeth made…. ? Not once several dozens of time, I happened to see this while Namal baby is on the stage all the way lying about their so called progress brought to the country.

We all like to put blame to moron Rajapakse son, and assume that rest of us are good people.. But what about all our Nanda, Mama Guruwarayas who ordered all their students (our children) to stop studies and go to main assembly room to hear Namal Ayya.?? . If Namal Ayya ask our Mama & Bappa Guras to send all our Nanda teachers to Namal’s room to give him foot massage, result would be the same.. Is low IQ Namal responsible for all this or is our spineless Mama & Nanda Guras who subject their children to these experiences have no responsibility here?

      • 7
        0

It’s not the spinelessness. Put yourself in the shoes of one of those teachers and think what would you have done. Would you be willing to gamble your job, your financial security, probably your life by standing against the son of a dictator. There is a fine line being brave and being stupid. Nobody likes to be a victim of a political revenge. People have given the Rajapaksas an unthinkable power that nobody is willing to speak against the Rajapaksa will.

How can you compare Karu, SF with Rajapaksches ?

Give us the list of speeches that Rajapakshe has given to international media since the war is no longer there ?
If CBK or any other leaders were in office, all tthese would have fallen in other lines in favour of the future of the nation. Now I still remmeber the way how world communities supported the country, nation, immediately after Monstorous Tsunami wave destructed the country in 2004. Even if Rajapakshes embazzzeled the sums, all these huge sums came in due to the foreign relationship that the CBK administration under the great lead of former FM late FM kadirgamar. Latter levels are not at all comparable to any of the comparable statistics in today s politics.

Alone the fact if one would see it clearly, not giving any kind of interview to the world press but doing all kind of criminal acts, not telling the truth to the nation ( that i refer here are the rural folk that make up 70% of the poverty stricken nation).

“Why was parliamentarian Namal Rajapaksa allowed to promote a Carlton Rugby tournament in government schools, during school hours”

What is wrong for Na-Mole Baby to goes to Girls Schools to promote Rugby as his Farther also very famous for giving Private Tuition to young Girls in Rest Houses during 1970 to 1977. Therefore it should be ok as he is real son of Mahinda Rajapaksha.

My personal opinion is Na-Mole baby should have given that task of promoting Rugby to his brother Rocket Rohitha as Na-Mole Baby should have undertaken to give Law lessons to Girls in all leading Girls Schools in the Island as he has the through knowledge of the Law. Great Lawyers like Dr. Kolvin R. De Silva, Hon. Weeramanthri, Hon. Romesh De.Silva, Hon. Sumanthiran are nothing in front of Our Na-Mole Baby as he got 100 out of 100 in his Law Exams and he is the Current record holder. Some says Law Collage Principal Rodrigo given the Answers for Na-Mole Baby, but don’t believe them as some says Jayaraj Fernandofulle write for his Father’s Law exam.

Also our Na-Mole Baby has every right to go wherever he needs as his Father and Baappa has liberated our Country from the Terrorists.

PS-Our Salute to Girls Students and brave Teachers in Sirimavo Bandaranayaka Vidyalaya for Chasing out this “Ambaruwa” from the School.

Did Ranil say that all Rajapaksha brothers put together will not pass G.C.E. (A/L) or (A/L), I am not sure. We may have to add in,their off springs as well, I guess.

If the un-ruling family had a semblance of regard for education, they would not have allowed girls schools to be turned into night club atmosphere that too during school hours. What a student motivational line of lyrics in the song. These uneducated barbarians want to transform our beautiful island into a pariah state void of intellectuals and learned men and women. All they need is a militarized masses to sing hosannas to these pariahs.

Over to you Banda and all other boot lickers of this pariah regime. The floor is wide open to you, come and dance with nudity, that too would not be a distant dream, the way things are going on in our Miracle of Asia. You guys together with your unruly MARA & CO, are a disgrace to our Nation, which had such high moral standards and cultural values.

History is littered with the progeny of leaders who have taken their lead from a father who has shown the way – Saddam and Gaddafi to name the most recent. Rajapakse is now ready to be inducted into this Hall of Infamy.

“””What sort of principal would tolerate such conduct?””” One who puts self-preservation above principles and better judgement.

‘’’Why aren’t parents objecting to their children being treated in this manner?’’’Parents would have gone through hell to get the child into this school. Do you think they are going to jeopardise their position and stand-out against the Principal on this?

This is just the sort of instance where a vigilant political opposition should raise hell; even educationists and other independent observers. But times are such that it seems everybody cowers these days not wanting to stand out. (And don’t even ask about our local laptop media).

Namal and his louche friends and accomplices are not the only offspring of the ruling regime running riot in these times. As you have written Tisaranee. The template for the future of our country is being developed today before our very eyes.

What is wrong with our Sinhala Buddhist Balika girls singing Kalu Menike?.

Daughters s of the Intelligentsia, the Elite and the Anglicans who go to International Schools, Ladies Colleges and and top end Christian schools always listen to Justin Beiber, when their parents enjoy the evenings in a one of those hip Night Clubs in Colombo or relax at home with a Michael Bubble cD..

Our Sinhala Buddhist girls don’t have those luxuries, Neither the time after attending tuition classes to learn what the teachers leave for the Tuition masters.

Picking on these innocent children and try to depict them as bad Namal supporters ain’t going to win any votes for the Rainbow Club.

Ranil and his Rainbow is apparently in dire straits, according to the ace political analyst Dr Dayan.

Even the Intelligentsia and the Elite would be taken aback after reading Dr Dayan’s revelations about Ranil’s dastardly deed of sacrificing the brave Srilankan Military Intelligent Unit to please Lord Prabakaran

The thinking ones may even envisage the Rainbow factions , with previous affiliation with terrorists, forming their individual Militias to do an Iraq or Libya if Sobitha succeeds in demolishing the president to give Ranil and his corruptible and corrupted cabinet to look after the inhabitants.

Ms T obviously can’t be on a performance bonus. as part of the package.

This picture shows candidly where Sri Lanka is heading. The girls are all in smiles and eagerly participating in the photo shoot. When you look at the picture it does not say that principals should not have allowed the Political Tamasha. I am sure the girls (and boys of other skools)had prior notice of vvIP Visit.

They are enjoying they have danced to vulgar tunes without a music. Now does this not reflect the political culture of Sri Lanka ? Isn’t this how Sri Lankan adults also behave when come election time ? come election MR GOV get voted overwhelmingly. No matter what shortcoming they have, no matter what sufferings they have brought to the masses,
No matter the debt trap warnings are ringing from multiple different quarters, no matter rising COL, no matter in spite of war has ended a dream of better life is not realized or in sight of sheer size of corruption taking place.

In reality these smiling faces is a reflection of Sri Lankan voter. This is how they go to the poling station. Once the voting carnival is over they will start complaining. The loop continues.

One of the witness (4th witness) to kneel down saga is found dead in a well.

Sadly this is level of intelligence of our fellow citizens.

” BOYS ARE BOYS”. The question is asked: “Why the Principals allowed entry to the schools?’ In return I must ask: Are there Principals and Teachers in schools now a days? Those were the days long gone. Now we have Principals and Teachers “taught” to dance to the tune of Politicians and if they take a “wrong” step, what the future for them is unpredictable. So “best” road to success is to “KNEEL DOWN” and spend the time stipulated in school and dash to the “Tuition Class” to make a living. Also asked: “What parents are doing”?. You, Tisaranee is way out of the reality. The parents know that school is not the place to learn anymore. They need only a “stamp” record of attendance. For them the “REAL SCHOOL” is the TUITION CLASS. So why worry so much of these “Politicians” entering schools. After all they are “elected” by the people and they have every right to be anywhere they will and want.

Gota has reservation on what Namal does, as he believes that they are nothing but juvenile and counter productive, compared to his beautification of Towns. Yet he stays quiet without comment because Gota reaps best of Namal’s actions and believes it will be a thing of the past once he secures power as head of State. MR sees otherwise, that allowing Namal to build the ‘Nil Balakaya’ and this Carlton Rugby will enable him to have a political base, until MR is ready to hand over power to Namal. However will this political base of Namal be strong enough to withstand Gota’s Military Machine the day he takes over? Interesting times are ahead to this Nation of naivetes.

Both Gota and Mara will end up in Hague on war crimes pretty soon.

No point of dreaming of Military machines or next President post.

No point in lamenting and crying foul ! After all we know who these Pakses are at least now. The only thing people can and must do is to get rid of these Pakse clan and all goon guys. Vote them out lock stock and barrel. Do not depend on the so called lame duck and disoriented bunch of good for nothing ‘opposition’. Change, that’s what necessary now, before it’s way too late. Act fast, time is running out.

This is an outrage. There is no point blaming the principals considering what happened to the witness who testified in the case against Wayaba parliamentarian recently.

but for you still MR is the man for the moment?

        0

Yes, MR is the least unsuitable candidate among MR, SF, CBK, RW, …. If those in the opposition would do their job properly, these things will not happen. When the opposition leader cannot do his job in the opposition, how can we expect him to do his job if elected president? For all I can see he is too busy coming up with a ruse to skip the election this time around as well! The man won’t even contest the election and you expect me to vote for him? I’m yet to see RW or UNP launching a mass agitation against killing of that witness! Do they expect us to give them the job of governing the country just because MR is unsuitable for the job?

If you still think being a person having access to internet that MR is the man for SL it explains why SL is doomed.
what exactly do you expect Ranil to do in opposition? You tell that Ranil is not doing anything as opposition leader. what do you expect him to do?

Actually the problem with MR is he is doing the WRONG things. Even doing nothing is better than doing wrong things.

Lets look at MR in two ways one as SL president and other as a sinhala leader.
As a sinhala leader what has he done for sinhala people?

Sinhala youth are getting killed in protests, sinhala youth is destroyed by MR funded drug mafia and he destroys everything that sinhala people hold as important.

MR won the war. yes but use your grey matter inside to see how MR has brought this country down. what is functioning in this country? Economy down, law and order down…

Since MR began his 2nd termin 2010 look at the number of ADDITIONAL problems MR has brought to this country. SL doesnt have a stable future now even worse than war period.

Take BBS example. MR is creating a non existant issue in this country. If he had even a brain of mustard seed size he would not support BBS. Now SL has additional problems thanks to MR that is ignoring the huge civil conflict we have been facing for 30 years.

And how about economy? can any MR follower ever say with a straight face economy is doing good in SL? How do you expect SL to face challenges with such a weak economy further weakened by MR policies and wastages, corruption?

Look at the diplomatic disasster MR has brought SL into.

To understand the low level SL has been dragged into one can easily look at the Cartoon issue. I have no problem with cartoons making fun of JLolita. But SL gov should have the intelligence to understand where it fits. Publishing such a thing in an official website and then tendering apologies one after the other. What a shame!

MR has no idea about the foriegn affairs he is like a street thug. Now as India is cosying with MR, MR is cutting down Pakistan and getting bold on muslim issues. MR is destroying a significant ally of us.

MR even at this moment has created problems that did not exist in SL before to create havoc in SL, economically weakened SL, a foriegn affairs disaster, got a war crimes investigation because of its stupidity. In other words MR has made this country knelt down in front of the world. That too without money.

Soon we kick this idiot the better. Only an enemy of SL can say we need MR in the future

        sach:

By the way, have you forgotten how Ranil Wickramasinghe once invited some school students in uniform on stage and had the students dance to baila music during one of his election meetings a few years ago? RW was seen clapping on stage while the students still in uniform danced on right in front of him!

If I remember correct, the incident took place some where in the western province and this is perhaps the same meeting where he assured students that they will get gold chains and bracelets under his administration … perhaps this spoilt brat Namal got this idea from the opposition leader himself — another good for nothing spoilt brat if you ask me!

          0

were the baila songs were of such nasty meanings?
Did ranil go inside a school and did that?

The problem here is not only what Namal did. The problem is MR and his family uses the resources of this country for their own consumption making the whole of country become just a play ground for them. It is the expolitation of what is Sri lankan for one family’s well being that is wrong.

I dont remember such an act by Ranil. so cant comment on that.

After all namal is accused of not only that ne. what about nepotism in rugby team and using a whole national team for one family’s agenda? what about rajapaksized cricket team? what about namal getting a law degree illegally? Has ranil done these as well?

Look at paper this day. The PC minister who made a school teacher knelt down has killed a witness and is threatening the teacher as well!

Look at what UPFA stooges doing everywhere. It is as if every rapist is a government PS member. The degradation of law under MR’s theory of allowing ‘ape miniha’ to go scot free from whatever wrong has dragged this country’s governance to this level.

As ardent supporters of MR you can stay blind to every wrong he does inside SL. All the corruption, wastage, economic disasters, nepotism, anti democratic acts, killing people, and doing every unimaginably despicale thing inside SL. But the disatster that is MR does not end there. It does not end in SL

MR has destroyed and is destroying our foreign relations. He is not going ahead with 13 A. He is failing SL in every external threat SL is facing.

The point is not MR is atleast doing some thing, the point is MR is doing disastrous things.

When i see some actions by MR and the level Sinhala poeple whitewash MR lunacy i feel it is good if UN can drag this man for war crimes. because at least then SL can have some chance to have a future because Sinhala people are not that intelligent to kick this bastard now.

Do girls Play Rugby? What is the purpose of the Visit? Is it to Promote Future Cheer girls for Rugby?

Oh… no … no… You people don’t understand. Actually this is called “Bed Rugby” . This guy is only good at this like his Father. Otherwise what the f.ck he is doing in Girls Schools? to promote what?

What else could you expect from these Rajapakse uneducated, uncultured and uncivilised MKRs, Tsunami Alibabas, synthetic lawyer and a grade eight passed policeman as Speaker in the house.

Going to Girls schools to promote Rugby while giving away T shirts and a cronic Rap Dancer encouraging Girls to dance during school hour is hilarious.

These uneducated fake bastar.s do not know anything else in life other than having Night races, night clubs and show off Lamborghinis to the world to get cheap exposure.

CHOGM after spending Billions of Rupees became a disaster in Sri Lanka’s history, where the Joker now cannot even represent anywhere as it’s head. He even skipped Glasgow CW games than to face humiliation. How many more CW events he is going to skip for the next two years as it’s head is the million Dollar question. Canada suspended Millions of Dollars of contribution to CW for the next two years because of an uneducated, childish, Charlie Chaplin became as it’s head.

When there are so many Boys schools in Colombo, going to girls schools to promote Rugby is anybodys guess. Third grade A..H… looking for cheap publicity.

Nero playing fiddle when the Rome is burning. Rajapakses end of era is near.

All I could say is …….Like Father like Son. Father carrying and hugging small children while son baby sitting girls. Happens only in Sri Lanka.

Another Great article by Tisaranee. Cheers.

Namal Rajapaksa’s should realize that his attempt at being accessible, down to earth, and being another young man, not a lot older than the students themselves did not go well here. There is a cultural gap here and he should not try to bridge it this way. Most Sinhalese children are rather conservative and singing popular songs, dancing, etc. are not going to work for them.

Namal should rather try other avenues to endear himself. Why not use a hike, volunteer work to uplift poor Sinhalese villages, or something like that? After a hard days work and solid networking the students who voluntarily participate in such events may join in a song and dance.

“Why not use a hike, volunteer work to uplift poor Sinhalese villages, or something like that?”

      No thanks.

Political brats cost more to the state and people in terms of security and logistic than the service that benefits the people.

Namal brat went to a school couple of years ago to declare it open after renovation. He invited himself for the occasion. The entire school was repaired and renovated by donations. The ceiling alone cost more than Rs 50,000. Few hours before his arrival his advance party arrived and pulled down part of the ceiling as usual security procedure.

Namal baby brought some pencils, rubbers, papers to the children.

The children and school would have been better off without his visit. The principal once again went with his begging bowl to raise finances to mend the ceiling from well wishers.

The schools are better off without these spoilt political brats.

Reading Tisaranee’s well written piece -as always – this is what came to my mind – as a past Visakhian of the Pulimood era I believe Mrs. Susan George Pulimood our graceful lady who always dressed modestly and carried herself with dignity and decorum must surely be turning in her grave – she would not stand this nonsense – whatever the consequences. Well, discipline has deteriorated – and the principals who came after her went down a few steps at a time – the earlier ones were close to Mrs.Pulimoods status but there were others later who even wore sleeveless cut-away blouses with the saree and then there were others of the hot-pot variety. At a Pulimood oration I attended the Principal at the time looked so sub-standard and her diction was atrocious. So it is no surprise that the present school heads are those like the ones who just sat and looked while the loku baba and the sindu guy played havoc within the walls of the schools. Strange that comments have not touched on this aspect of the drama.
