Nepotist Sirisena At It Again

The nepotism powered yahapalanaya government led by President Sirisena and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe is due to bring the President’s daughter Chathurika Sirisena into the public limelight once again. This time the Civil Security Department which comes under the Ministry of Defence, has invited her to be the chief guest at the BMICH on the 28th December 2015. Two hundred and two houses and educational material are to be handed over to identified CSD members and their children. This was revealed by CSD spokesman Major Vajira Kumaratunga recently.

ChathurikaThe project which is run for the fifth time has already seen 653 houses being distributed under this scheme to CSD personnel in the past.

Under the current program 32,338 children of CSD personnel will stand to benefit when educational material and laptops are to be distributed costing Rs10.2 million

A senior government official commented that this project is a a good one, but bringing in the Head of State’s daughter Chathurika where President Sirisena himself is the Minister of Defence is nothing but blatant nepotism he said.

“We do have enough of other distinguished people in the Ministry of Defence who could be bestowed this honor. Did we not have enough of the past president Rajapaksa’s siblings and close family members ruling the roost?” he asked.

One of President Sirisena’s pre-election promises was to end the nepotism rule of the former Rajapaksa regime and cited this as one of the reasons for his breaking of ties with the former President.

Colombo Telegraph earlier exposed the current President’s daughter Chathu’s attempts of gaining political mileage when she got government officials and policemen to tag along with her on her personal fact finding missions in the Pollonnaruwa electorate. Chathu was also noted to have being invited as the chief guest at the National Kite Festival, besides also being invited as the chief guest at the Seevali Girls School Gampaha and Royal College Pollannaruwa.

The annual concert of the Naval Pre-schools of SLNS Gamunu, SLNS Tissa and SLNS Dakshina were held at the Navy Headquarters in Colombo on 06th December 2015 and Chathurika Sirisena graced the occasion as the Chief Guest, the Navy website said.

It was also reported that on multiple occasions Chathurika Sirisena was photographed to have been accompanied by PSD security detail for these functions, despite her being an ordinary citizen.

Give them a break. His simple village wife is totally uncomfortable. So like how Michele Obama represents Barack Hussein O, he is delegating his daughter who like Michele loves the limelight and hogs the media. Michele is a top lawyer and this lady is not; but still the principle is the same. Also Sirisena wants to bring her into politics like how Namal Baba was brought in and how Anura Bandaranaike was brought in; but in case of Anura, he did not go around representing his mother or father at openings. But today in the social media era, I doubt if the three Bandaranaike siblings would have withstood this sort of scrutiny. For example Chandrika got a job at Land Reforms commission because she was Sirimavo;s daughter and Hector Kobbekaduwa liked her and her leftist agenda. So she got a job without qualifications. That is how the worm turns. Look at all the golayas and sons and daughters appointed by UNP and SLFP ministers since 1977 to embassy positions. UNP did it in Washington DC both under JRJ and worse under Premedasa. Everyone knows what Rajapakse did. Even Chandrika had a couple of small flaws like appointing the useless geriatric DeSaram to UN post. But she did not send out relatives to Embassies other than DeSaram. Mahinda Appachchi broke world records. Mangala is doing so in gay abandon too.

I say it is part of the culture and way society functions in semi-feudal societies. We have to help ourselves before we help others. LOOK at all the in-laws of the Minister of Finance in high positions. Not one of them is qualified except by relationship. His arrogant defiance is having Ranil on the backfoot and even the garrulous social media UNP ministers are silent and have katey pittu when it comes to nepotism. Sirisena appointed his brother.

She is pretty in a Sinhala thala elalau village way; she is standing in for her mother. Give them a break. Those without sin be the first to caste a stone. How did Daham Sirisena afford to go to London for studies as a son of a Grama Sevaka? Where is Uyangoda, Viyangoda, Victor Ivan on these? Katey pittu

Nepotism prevails in almost any part of the world in varying degrees and it appears that in Sri Lanka it is exceptionally high. Let us not forget that one of the reasons that people got sick of the former regime was the excessive display of the regal status of the rugger playing former princes, now cut to size. I know of characters who voted for the ex-President and now say that it is a good thing he lost because of the excessive and publicly insensitive display of oppulence of the Presidential children.

The former presidential children, displayed their rugger ball, the racing cars, a functioning television network and even took to politics and won elections winning with flying colours in their electoral district. At least one of them is a people’s representative. What have the present presidential children got to show case? (It is a show case alright and nothing substantial.) One of them being part of Sri Lanka’s delegation to the UN is attrocious and cannot be condoned by any standards. Now this business of being the Chief Guest of children’s events in the institutions of the Ministry of Defence is another act raising public dismay. However, the display of opulence of the present presidential children may be hell of a lot milder than the previous.

Let us not forget one fact. The present regime was put in place under the banner of Yahapalanaya or Good Governance. That also means the establishment of a regime of meritocracy. In that light whatever form nepotism cannot be tolerated and each time it is violated it is a betrayal of the public confidence reposed in them.

It’s quite obvious that the President is grooming his daughter for a career in politics by bringing her into the public spotlight. After all, politics in SL is a family tradition, being passed on to the spouse in the case of an early demise or to the children upon retirement.

It is not unusual to invite a close relative of the Head of Government to open and / or initiate national projects and similar undertakings. We see this in the U.S., India, England etc.

    Dear Colombo Telegraph,

You did the country a great favour by exposing probable nepotism when highlighting issues related to Kumarasinghe Sirisena. In this second article, you provided us with hard facts. I consider myself still a supporter of Maithripala Sirisena, but unless these documents are explained, that may soon cease to be the case:

    https://www.colombotelegraph.com/index.php/expose-president-sirisena-resorts-to-half-truths-to-conceal-his-brothers-greed/

It would be useful for readers to look at this as well, but this Hutch take-over is no longer being talked about. If it is off, then that’s a great achievement for Colombo Telegraph:

Exposé: President Sirisena In The Thick Of A Multi Billion Kickback Scandal

What I have “linked” is the reproduction of your article by the website that appears to often take a Sinhala racist line.

Those matters relating to Kumarasinghe S. are depressing for me, but they are extremely grave issues, and we need explanations.

However, all the fuss about the Maithri children trivialises the issue of nepotism. You did right to highlight the blunder represented by Daham Sirisena having a front seat at the U.N. It was the sort of mistake that shouldn’t have been made, but it was no moral lapse. All the stuff about Chathuri, is just not worth your while posting. There are so many useful things that you publish; articles of this sort affect the quality and reputation of your website.

    Please show better judgement!

“However, all the fuss about the Maithri children trivialises the issue of nepotism. You did right to highlight the blunder represented by Daham Sirisena having a front seat at the U.N.”

      Yes. Well Stated.

May be the President should appoint her, as Public Relations Minister or other post s that she can represent the President.

The President is not really for all these openings and ceremonies.

I do not think that the people want, Ms. Hirunika Premachandra or Ms. Pavitra Vanniaarachhi.

      • 1
        0

        Amarasiri,

Hirunika has just shot herself in the foot and needs to be relegated way down in the ranks, while Pavitha, the less said the better.

Hirunika showed so much promise, but her actions belied her lofty words and utterings, proving they meant nothing in the end.

The people will be watching how this government reacts to this new development. The government has a great opportunity to earn itself a good point or secure a bad one.

      I agree whole-heartedly !

The Press should only report VERY selectively, choosing the stories with care.

It is better for all if they only publish the positive stories of Yahapalanaya instead of any negative ones, which will create anger and fear in the minds of the peoples

      Am I right ?

Sinhala Man, the choice of this article by CT only caters to the unthinking gallery; not to the discerning readership.

This is what is known as trying hard to make an issue of a non-issue.

I am happy to share some information I have recently heard concerning Kumarasinghe Sirisena. Please contradict me if this information is wrong.

Kumarasinghe Sirisena was the Telecom Chairman BEFORE Welgama, who was a businessman and a newspaper owner. Welgama knew nothing of telecom. Kumarasinghe Sirisena was a former telecommunication engineer, and the Telecom Chairman before Welgama.

As said before, please contradict me if this information is wrong, for I am only stating what I heard.

Another thing I have heard is that the President DOES NOT listen to any of his family members concerning appointments, and cuts them short in their tracks, if any favours are asked. I have heard that his brothers are mortally scared to ask for anything of a personal favour, from him.

True or not, this is what I have heard.

        Dear Justice & Fairplay,

I want to believe you, and I have noted, from previous comments that your handle is a well chosen one. You refuse to accept anything that is not backed by evidence.

The problem that I have here is this: what you have said does not correspond with what an Internet search throws up. Here is what he himself must have put on the www:

        https://www.linkedin.com/in/p-g-kumarsingha-sirisena-314623b0

His qualifications and experience relate to Accountancy and Management. It is unlikely that he would also have been an engineer.

Who were the former bosses of Telecom? I go to Wikipedia, and this is what I get. Wikipedia itself tells us that there are multiple issues with regard to this article. Surely Telecom should have the resources to get this article straightened out.

        https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sri_Lanka_Telecom

I hope you know that even you can edit any Wikipedia entry, only you must follow certain guidelines. For a start, look at “view history” in that article. You may know some of these things I’m saying; in case you don’t, some unscrupulous guy would have made trillions of dollars out of the World Wide Web: this man prevented it:

        https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tim_Berners-Lee

I’m no expert in this field, but I think that there is a relationship between his work and the “Open Office” that I use, instead of pirated Microsoft Office. These people do ask for “donations” (nothing can be done without money), but have given nothing, because the fact is that I am poor. I admit that I have installed pirated Windows 7 on this computer, but a friend was able to restore the proper Windows 7, with updates enabled, on a notebook computer which he purchased for me. We must try to be as honest as possible!

        https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Open-source_software#Widely_used_open-source_software

So, I still use Mozilla Firefox which these decent people who don’t want to over-exploit others have developed. Google is free, of course, and I use many of the wonderful features that come with a “gmail” address for free. But they depend on advertising, and that is a cloak and dagger area: read Orwell and other dystopian novelists for that.

To get back to Kumarasinghe Sirisena, this is how his appointment was announced:

        http://www.asianmirror.lk/news/item/6618-president-s-brother-kumarasinghe-sirisena-appointed-as-telecom-chairman

        Nothing there about engineering.

Also, in what I posted earlier, I’ve given links to two articles in Colombo Telegraph. Those are well-substantiated. The President has to respond to them. All that I have heard about him personally is in consonance with what you say of him. So, let’s hope that all this unnecessary talk is put an end to soon. I think that we ought to have some way of working together on all this, because the fact is that things are going to get more difficult after this budget mess-up.

But that is a quite different subject!

          Dear Sinhala Man,

I trust what you say and accept it. As I said in my comments, what I wrote was what I heard, and may not have been the gospel truth.

I am happy to believe you and thank you for enlightening me.

The Budget – Ah! Was there any budget in the end?? I thought it was a pantomime!

Did MR behave like this in his first year in power, year 2005? I don’t think so? As I remember MR’s offsprings started act like Royals and travelled around the world with their father in the second term of MR or closer to the MR’s final years in power.
The way Mr. Gamaralalge Sirisena acts in his first year shows that he would surpass MR’s corruptions levels so easily and so soon in the coming years… The way Mr. Sirisena talked about Nelson Mandela, Mahatma Gandhi and about civilized outside world, lot of us thought MS is a man who reads and have strong ethical & moral core values, and going to be a great leader…. We all were fooled by Mr. Gamaralalge..

    Give her a break guys…

Chattu is doing this without any costs to the Colombo Elite Tax payers,

Its not like Galleon Ravi’s whole extended family who are on the take with their generous remunerations from the Ministry of Finance controlled entities.

Besides Chattu is the only sibling who shows some potential to become a Yahapalana politician from the left of centre to represent the Dalits.

That is the conclusion that I came to after watching Daham in his ill fitting suit sitting among the high rollers in the UN. along side his old man.

What you guys should focus on is the Criminal behaviour of Batalanada’s hand picked UNP beauty , Hrunickers who has become even more brave than one time enemy of the Elite, Dr Brave Mervyn.

Merv’s son would have taken rides in the Old Man’s Defender , but young Malaka never dragged innocent Dalits in public during office hours holding them by the scruff of their neck in the public with all actions recorded by our I Phone brigades.

And Merve himsel didn’t brag in public about his brave acts like young Hirunickers does.

Batalanada Ranil obviously has no Balls to tell the CID to lock her up, althogh Batalanada arrested Johnston even on gossip..

And to my surprise Batalanda’s picked Hirunickers at the expense of Rosy Senananayaka, who seems a cool calm collected lady who served the UNP well during its hard times.

      13

For once, K.A.Sumanasekera, I totally agree with you.

Neither Ranil nor the President can take the mood of the population (and that includes us) for granted.

Today I read somewhere on the web that the ‘imminent arrest’ of a prime suspect in the Thajudeen murder has been stalled by a ‘powerful’ man in the government.

Similarly it looks clearer by the day that the Hirunika embarrassment is being best tried to be swept under the carpet as something that didn’t happen.

In my view both the PM and the President have so far not blotched their copybook. They should continue in the same vein. Subverting justice will rebound with interest.

      Let justice prevail.

After 9/11 the plantation worker island did become the Island of Warlords surpassing Afghanistan.

Do you want Ms. Hirunika Premachandra instead of Ms. Chathurika Sirisena?

Perhaps, make her a Minister, of State and Government affairs.

The president cannot be attending to all these events.

Is this nepotism, delegation or efficacy for the president?

    • 2
      21

      Amarasiri

Sure, the Prez. cannot attend each and every trivial ribbon-cutting and kiribath-eating Tamasha – the incessant sound of conch-shells, drums and flutes must surely be playing havoc with the poor man’s hearing !!

I call it Nepotism, not Efficiency nor Effective Delegation when you start appointing your offspring who have no official standing in the Administration

Are there no other high-up staff in these various ministries who can go and cut a ribbon or swallow a kavun followed by a delicious cup of tea ? People who dont need PSD attendance and a fleet of vehicles ?

  • 7
    22

CT, the associated paranoia does not fit the ‘crime’.

Did the President engineer this invitation? OR, did Chathurika engineer it?

Chathurika is entitled to personal security in a country which is still struggling to be termed entirely safe, as she undertakes public spirited work.

Did you question Mahinda Rajapakse getting over 80 persons for his security?

For how many functions do the Queen’s family members get invited? Do they get shouted down by their own press? They grace such occasions as a public duty, that is all.

Criticise the President by all means if such criticism is valid. In this instance I do not think so.

Suggest you take a good look at yourself in the mirror. These cheap attempts at sensationalism only lower your own esteem. In time, no one would take any notice of your headlines.

She may want to enter politics and who can stop her doing so, not even her father. Do not know her academic qualifications bur if she can make a proper speech, why cannot she chair the meeting as the chief Quest. She was invited to be the Chief Quest by a divisional head of Civil Security Dept. in the ministry of Defence based on her credentials and what is wrong there as the procedure is followed correctly.

Nepotism does not come in here as she gets no monetary benefits expect
publicity, which she probably wants to pursue her political carrier.
Every member of the President’s family is given armed protection by the PSD and there is nothing wrong if they followed her where ever
she went. The writer is making a mountain out of a maul hill as if
he does not know that past President MR was given 500 strong Army
personnel and Police commandos to safe guard him after he lost the last presidential election and around 10,000 security men engaged in
protecting the MPs at the expense of the public money.

Abey, are you able to read and assimilate the message in this article?

Is there anything worth taking note of, in this CT article? Don’t you think it is a personal grouse it has with the President which is being made into an issue?

What is ‘Nepotism’? Have you thought of that? It would have been ‘nepotism’ if the President engineered this entire thing.

As for security, the President does not decide on his own security or that of his family. The Presidential Security Division does.

That has been the case all along.

  • 8
    21

I dont see what is wrong in Chathurika being the chief guest here. It is not nepotism at all. It’s like in any event where one cant make it, they send a representative. It happens even in Oscars where if an actor cant come, they send their father, mother of siblings of spouse to get the award.

What Namal was doing was engaging in politics and taking control on things. She is just representing her father or the mother (who is the first lady) at events. Not a big deal at all. She’s not in politics. She’s not taking control of things.

Also, the incident where she took officers and went to the villages. She went there as the representative of her father. She reported back to her father. She never took any decisions or gave any orders there.

And regarding PSD. Every member of the first family will be given security within the country and at times abroad too. This is not new. This is the same in every country around the world. Stop creating a fuss over nothing. I thought you guys were better than this. Now seems like you guys are getting into the low level of gossip sites!!! SHAME!!

While nepotism is terrible it seems that these attacks on a woman and daughter of the Preseident are far more virulent than attacks on the uneducated sons of politicians who it seems have a natural right to succeed their fathers?!

Why does CT not go after Mahinda Jarapassa’s sons? and Dimu Jayaratne’s sons and Rajitha and all the other corrupt politicians’s sons?

  • 3
    20

“The nepotism powered yahapalanaya government”? Seriously?

OK, OK… I’m all for the eradication of nepotism but inviting the wife (or daughter in this case) in place of the President, as a chief guest… is that your biggest gripe? You are just getting past a regime where the whole family of the Big Honcho was holding official positions all throughout the the government. Suddenly you expect the bloody thing to be as white as a lily? Are CT people that messed up in their heads?

By all means criticize this government for the some of outright moronic things they do and keep them on their toes. For instance, if I had a news web-site like CT, I’d go apeshit on the govt rule to charge people for withdrawing their own money from the banks. May be I’d talk to some financial experts and understand the implications and economic side-effects such a rule. You expect this kind of nonsense from the Rajapaksa regime (and they only charged 0.1%) because it was like asking a real mean kid to look after an ant colony. But you’d expect the current administration, with so many “financial experts”, to come up with a more ingenious ways to raise the money needed. God Damn!!! what does it take to have some people with a bit of foresight to run the country.

But making a big deal out of this chief guest invitation, frankly, makes you wonder if CT is grabbing for straws on a slow news day. When America faced slow news seasons, amidst a great economy, the media had to find a girl who’d given a b-job to the President to keep people coming to their news outlets. Will CT go down to the same level, I hope not!

Look… this government is not perfect but it is 10 fold better than the “Alice In Wonderland” like regime that used to run the affairs. Sometimes you wonder if CT is rooting for the return of that regime because it is “better for business” when more people were coming here to vent their frustration.

  • 1

You get Nepotism and corruption all over the world. In the western world, they see that the people get their three meals a day and rob the balance. In Sri Lanka they rob all three meals first and if there is a balance the people get it.

IF allowing Chathurika to accept invitations and appear at public functions were the worst excess of this Yahapalana government, then our worries are over.

Chathurika behaves decorously, has never been contentious and, most of all, takes on these invitations by choice. It has been said that she does so to shield a painfully shy mother. If so, that is laudable.

Let us move on to more serious matters.

TourisDriver: You said it well, though what were mentioned are a very SHORT list. Before coming to power all these “Bastards” hoodwink the people and once in “Governance” they completely forget who they were and what they do. Some of those who “Supported” them to come into power either GRAB what they could, while some others remain SILENT, as you said with “Kate Pittu”. Then there are still another “INVISIBLE” lot who silently identify the “DESIRES” and the “NEEDS” of these “Powered Lot” and cater to bolster the “Ego” and achieve all what they have to reap while the sun shines. All these so called “Politicians” with “Decades” of experience spoil even those YOUNG on whom we had placed faith to turn around the clock. The latest in this drama is the case of Hirunika. She has proved beyond any doubts how such ASSOCIATION can produce the unthinkable. So do we have to LIVE with it or DO AWAY with it?

      Dear Douglas,

All true, but should we relate these comments to this unnecessary “news” item?

I’m spending only so much time on this report as to say that we ought to be talking about those things that really make us uncomfortable. As Josh, above, has said, such things ought to be left for gossip sites. There will always be some people who want such vacuous blather.

Juxtaposing this with serious issues helps only to further delay, or choke off investigating the issues that matter. The damage done by frivolity of this sort may be irreversible, and the real crooks will get away.

And this sort of thing snowballs. A fortnight ago, somebody actually told me that Chathuri is paid millions a year for being some sort of adviser to Telecom (she has some IT qualification, apparently). Obviously arrant nonsense, but if serious sites publish stories like this one, it is easy for the less informed to go spread slander.

But my bottom line is: please, Maithri and Ranil, do not leave more important issues unexplained.

If you, CT, are pointing your finger at this appointment of CG to a function and calling it nepotism, then according to that thinking, she is not entitled in her personal capacity to accept any appointment, on her own right simply because she is the President’s daughter. That is downright high handedness on your part. Further, if that is the case the woman would have to then start growing vegetables in her back garden and not take an active part in society as she is trying to do.There are more important matters in the Country which your journalists can stick their fingers into…….. and highlight.

Dear Sinhala_Man: Thank you. I agree with what you say. There is also a danger of ignoring or adopting a “let it go” attitude on these issues too. That is exactly what happened to Ex President Mr. Mahinda Rajapakse from 2009 to 2014. The people did “ignore” what he was doing to glorify his image and the family, being grateful for bringing that long awaited Peace. The closely “knitted” inner circle composed of all the “goons” and “Family Bandits” took advantage of that “merry making” situation displayed by the people and as a result the country LOST a “Leader” who could have been, (if ALLOWED to be) guided to achieve much desired economic and social changes in the country. Having learned that bitter lesson at great cost to the country and the people, these issues have to be addressed and show the Leaders that PEOPLE are not going to TOLERATE any more of these “Behind The Scene” “MANOEUVRES” by a like set of “Inner Circle” goons and bandits of the present set of Leaders. So having considered the past experiences we witnessed, these “News” items are important and must be struck hard at the very beginning, as otherwise, it would be too late to regret.

President MS seems to be having a complex. The son of a chena cultivator, then a Grama Sevaka, and setting foot into politics as a SLFP youth wing activist eventually ending up as a Head of State, all within a couple of years makes him rather unique. This rise generally takes generations!
Naturally, the man is in a hurry, dragging his progeny into the limelight.
This is a common symptom of small people in big places.
His notion of Class is Political Power.
It would be more appropriate for his daughter to be a judge of an Avurdu Kumari contest with Kiributh,Kavun,Kokis with Kolikuttu!

Oh, my goodness, what a superiority complex you have!

Correction though: “a couple of years” ought to mean 2 years. It was very much earlier that he was a Grama Sevaka.

Listening to him, it is obvious that the man is very well read. Only a fraction of that may have been in European languages (English and Russian, I should imagine), but what of that?

Certain other misgivings I have already voiced on this very blog.

        Dear Sinhala Man,

President Maithripala Sirisena, for all his purported lack of ‘background’has surpassed many, when it comes to talking common sense. Whether it is through reading or association I do not know, but he shows the depth of understanding that a leader of substance and worth should have, and long may it be so for the sake of the people of this country.

This country and this website should value what we now have, from what we had, rather than pine for what we haven’t!

We all can believe or justify anything we choose to. However if we are honest to ourselves it will be difficult not to accept that the president does not live by his promises.
