Northern Demonstrations: Creating A Kashmir?

By Dayan Jayatilleka

Dr. Dayan Jayatilleka

Dr. Dayan Jayatilleka

Were the scenes we saw on our TV screens this week a manifestation of a potentially dangerous, post-January 8th radicalization in the North?

It is perfectly natural for demonstrations to be held when a crime as heinous as the rape and murder of a schoolgirl takes place.

It is natural that such demonstrations be emotional.

It would also be natural for those demonstrations to take a violent turn if the suspected perpetrators of the crime were from the armed forces or Police or former members of those services or of a different ethnicity from the victim.

In this case however, the suspects weren’t Sinhalese or current or ex-service personnel.

Law enforcement did not try to cover up the crime or protect the perpetrators. The suspects were promptly tracked down and arrested.

Why then and how then did the protests turn forceful and violent?

Why were the targets the institutions of the (uninvolved) State? Why were Police personnel targeted and injured?

Why did the protests not remain localized, i.e. limited to the general area of the crime?

How did they spread to towns throughout the North?

How and why were the protests sustained over two days?

Is it coincidental that these demonstrations were in the wake of the mourning in the North on May 19th? Who would mourn the end of the war, the end of the large scale killing and dying, the dawn of peace? Who would mourn as a historical tragedy, the defeat of the Tigers and the death of the child-conscripting Prabhakaran? Why?

Was there any incitement by the pro-LTTE or more broadly, the pro-Tamil Eelam segment of the Tamil Diaspora, operating through the radical wing of the TNA?

Is this a manifestation of the Pongu Thamil training and indoctrination and the Makkal Padai culture?

President Rapajapksa reopened democratic space in the North and East by defeating the Tigers and holding all types of multiparty elections in the former conflict areas. He also kept the lid on. The security net was in place. Nothing of the kind of demonstrations we’ve just seen could happen during his tenure.

Wigneswaran dissuaded the Northern Provincial Council from passing a Genocide Resolution, on Mahinda’s watch. The Resolution was passed after the dawn of Yahapalanaya.

Today the security net has been rolled back by the Government. It is in that context of a permissive security atmosphere, a security semi-vacuum, that violent and radical demonstrations can take place in the North.

Is it because the North thinks that since its votes were decisive in bringing Yahapalanaya to power — certainly the Swan would have lost if not for the votes of the erstwhile pro-Tamil Eelamist, pro-Tiger constituency/periphery adjacent to Tamil Nadu — it has special rights and can function with impunity?

The long struggle for Tamil Eelam also began with Satyagrahas and violent demonstrations. As revealed by Prime Minister SWRD Bandaranaike in an address to Parliament, there were violent attacks on the Police in Gal Oya in 1956-1958.

Are the latest demonstrations the beginning or the testing out, of an Intifada strategy?

Is it the beginning or the test run of a Kashmir scenario in which there is daily violence by stone throwing mobs against Police and armed forces personnel?

Aren’t violent demonstrations the way in which the Kosovo struggle started in the 1990s, and Serbia was framed after it had to send in troops to restore order?

Are the recent demonstrations the second prong of a multipronged strategy of which the first prong was the dastardly Genocide Resolution of Wigneswaran and the Northern Provincial Council?

The State must not lose control of the Northern streets. The authority of the state must be restored.

Our soldiers did not die so as to cede the Northern streets to violent mobs.

They certainly did not sacrifice their lives and limbs to usher in federalism and an inevitable de facto merger with neighboring Tamil Nadu, in the guise of postwar reconciliation.

Our troops did not give their lives to permit the North and East to be handed over by an elected puppet government as an economic and strategic “sphere of influence” of our giant neighbor which has a permanently embedded 70 million strong Tamil population with much hostility towards the Sinhalese. The respected Times of India carried a photograph just days ago of a massive Prabhakaran poster adorning walls in Tamil Nadu in mourning for his demise. Tamil Nadu sentiment is not merely anti-Sinhala; it is pro-Tiger, even when the victim of the Tigers was India’s beloved Rajiv Gandhi! The well-made Bollywood film Madras Café, with John Abraham as the star, which is based on the Rajiv killing and the IPKF saga, was successfully banned from cinemas in Tamil Nadu as well as Tamil cinemas in the UK.

Our troops did not die so that Sri Lanka’s North and East could become a Tamil Nadu (or Indian) semi-colony within an island that becomes a Western plus Diaspora neo-colony.

In order to restore the authority of the State in the North, self–respect and strength of character must be restored to the State.

Do we not need Mahinda Rajapaksa as PM to restore strength, political will, purpose, direction and self-respect to the Sri Lankan State; to reinstall an erect spine as it were, and stop the dangerous drift in the North?

Isn’t the return of Mahinda imperative to prevent Yahapalanaya from degenerating or drifting into Yaalpalanaya?

It is now clear that the attack on the Jaffna courts have been the work of Mahinda group. The reaction from Mahinda and this article by Dayan clearly express the blood thirsty mentality of Mahinda group. The reports from Jaffna tells that the EPDP group was involved in this crime. The murder of that innocent child must have been a well planned coup against Maithiri government. They know very well such a crime would create unrest among Tamil people. My suspicion is that it must be organised with the advise of Dayan. He wants Tamil blood to bring back Mahinda. A civilised human being will condemn this butcherous rape and murder of a child. I am sure rational Sinhalese people can understand the pain of the community of this rape murder. I am sure that the Mahinda regime will not stop with this dirty politics as long as they are not punished for their crimes.

Well done Ajith, Dayan is becoming a very cheap onsided analysis.

These days he is looked after by Rajapaksa’s group.

Poor Dayan has no party, no friends, no support.

He has no humanity too. Otherwise how can he take side on rape case done or supported by Daouglas Devananda’s EPDP gang.

Which troops, Dayan? The EPRLF cadres of which outfit you were a provincial minister?

Not just the attack the rape and btutal murder was also comitted by Mahinda group.
The motive is to create a situation and blame it on LTTE or Diaspora Tamil or TNA and Wiggy as Dayan is merrily doing here to placate his paymaster

Champika Ranawaka has witnessed anti Sinhala/Buddhist stone throwing rioters in Jaffna, lead by C. V. Vigneswaran and R. Sampanthan. Both were seen carrying Molotov Cocktails under their Dhoti (Vesty, or Aryan suite) and will be confirmed by OTC, Ramuuu Saaamy, sach, Dayan, …………………

Possibly both were leading from the front unlike VP.

By the way Diaspora funded the whole operation which is against the Sinhala/Buddhists in Jaffna.

Mahinda , his Shills and cronies, who have lost are trying different things to discredited the Common sense Govt. of Mr. Maitripala Sirisena. Their credibility is being fast degraded every day.

Dayan Jayatillaka, let go of the Medamulana Mahinda Rajapaksa before you will be called Banga-Tillaka.

Mahinda and his EPDF cronies are using innocent school children to meet their political ends, and are now using the Tamil People of Jaffna. They used Muslims at Aluthgama, and tried to fool the Sinhala Buddhists, and not all of them fell into the trap..

      Ajith,

This sleep deprived devil’s advocate is revealing too much and that just confirms the actual mastermind behind this gruesome Gang Rape and Murder of an innocent young girl.

You know what, the Sinhala community already knows who is behind this and the motive.

This schizophrenic liar is already suffering from the venom he spewed in the UN with regard to the mass killings in the north. His blatant lie was so disgusting and scary to the man who hired him to do the job, that he was discarded like a rag at the first opportunity available. So now he is just trying to be useful to that master so that he will hire him back.

My point is you need not react for the nonsense he writes.

Not surprising. DJ is raising the bogey for vimal and Mahinda to ride.
Yes, this demonstration is worth watching. All the previous rapes and murders were fairly or not fairly attributed to state agents.

May be the worm has turned. Why is the state not listening to the voice of tamil people take there frustrations to account.

    Dayan the war monger types:

“Were the scenes we saw on our TV screens this week a manifestation of a potentially dangerous, post-January 8th radicalization in the North?”

This is expected of a paranoid schizophrenia.

Paranoid schizophrenia is defined as a subtype of schizophrenia in which the patient has delusions (false beliefs) that a person or some individuals are plotting against them or members of their family.

    medicalnewstoday.com

Once again this war monger spread his recycled horror stories and confirms being a propagandist of POLITICS of FEAR whereas most people want POLITICS of HOPE.

There is absolutely no political motivation in the Northern protests. It is striking to note Dayan taking the same stand as his Guru and mentor Mahinda Rajapakse in this issue. Rape, especially gang rape is something that was never heard of before in Jaffna. The anger of the population was entirely spontaneous and not motivated by any political organisation. Some criminal elements connected to an ex- paramilitary group and a minor political party is suspected to be behind the gang rape and murder. There has been an attempt to treat the complaint by the parents about their missing daughter too lightly by the law enforcing authorities. It has to be noted all the protests were targeted against the criminals who commited the crimes and not against any Sinhala inhabitants of the North. Some mischievous elements, again belonging to these ex- para military group had tried to divert the very peaceful protests into a violent one, perhaps with a motive of brewing more violence that could justify the continued presence of a huge military in the North which provides no protection to the innocent citizens residing there!

Dayan and Mahinda are beating the Sinhala racist drum to work up the Sinhalese masses to vote Mahinda to power, and reintroduce the lawless racist fascist state again.

God forbid, if they succeed this island’s peaceful future cannot be expected.

They want the Mahanma thero’s project started at independence in 1948 to come to their envisaged conclusion.

There has been a proliferation of pubs and taverns and the use of narcotics in the North over the past several years which has led to a cultural degeneration there. The increase in heinous crimes such as rape and murder are linked to this. There is a strong suspicion amongst the people of the North that Gota and his group of people are behind the systematic proliferation of drugs and liquor outlets in the North.
It is the responsibility of all elders, religious leaders and teachers to step up efforts towards a moral re-armament there.

Leave the accusation on MR team for a moment. Let’s say a genuine rape case of this nature took place. Would the reaction from the same crowd be any different from this ? Where is our government’s security cover ? Where’s the high security zone, which protected North & East from this nonsense since 2009 ? Ask yourself wisely, without just blaming DJ for his patriotic write-ups.

@DJ: you mean letting police and STF to show their muscles at FTZ workors and protesters or shooting at civilians demonstrating for clean water and at the same time allowing BBS under state patronage to carry out their pogroms on muslims is democratical free space. But GOTA allowing demos in front of US/UK/UN offices or killing of journalists aor Monks forcibly entering into ministries or ministers entering into TV Stations is democratic space for you? What about the white vans and grease yaka to terrorize and control the civil society? DJ, you are a pathetic biased no good old man looking for your survival at any means even prostitute. We need Mahinda to further divide this country on ethnic lines. We need Dayan to promote this brutal culture of division hate and suspicion but we definitely do not need Mahinda and his cronies like Dayan amongst others to heal wounds and get this country back to where it belongs. A Pearl in the Indian Ocean. Dayan you are now going overboard, with your disgusting ramblings

  • 4
    1

    Dayan,

“Nothing of the kind of demonstrations we’ve just seen could happen during his (MR’s) tenure.”

Your coolie mentality of above shows how stupid you are. What is wrong for people to show their anger in a democratic society in a democratic way against a crime of this nature. You find an excuse to have a large army in the North and rule under iron fist. Clearly you are fishing in the troubled waters. You and MR are still holding the already dead tiger’s tail and cry wolf(rather tiger)!.

You have been trying hard to brainwash people ” Mahinda thama veeraya.” How long you guys are going to hold on to the dead tiger’s tail? Use your brain and think out of the box for civilized politics. Don’t you fool with a PhD know that in a developed democracy law enforcement agencies work independently and enforce the law without any political interference. Whom are you trying to fool and brainwash foolish Dayan?

    DJ is insane

Pls, read what Northern Governor to Island

The Governor appreciated that the police had quite rightly allowed the Jaffna population to demonstrate against the killing. The law enforcement authorities respected the civilians’ right, but acted without hesitation to quell violence unleashed by a relatively a small group of persons.

A majority of those who had been involved in attacks were arrested to face legal action; Governor Palihakkara said adding that the police earned rare praise from Jaffna media for professionally handling an extremely difficult situation.

Adding to this Northern Chief Minister appreciates police action and told to punish all those violent protesters damaged public property.

Certainly Dayan becomes the propagandist of Sinhala radical racist elements.

The problem since 1956 is the distorted information or complete blackout regarding Tamils…..

Not a single sinhala press in the south published the story of this rape of a Tamils girl in Punkuduteevu when in North there is an army soldier for each 5 Tamils and 100s police mostly Sinhalese roaming in the streets ..thanks to MURDERPAKSE`S liberation people can’t walk free even during day time …

But the attack on Police station and Courts were prominent news in Sinhala media as usual and BSS went on said these are attack against Sinhalese in North….this raise many questions…

It is natural people act emotionely when something hapend to their loved ones like this ..but attack on courts raise a question …if CID track phone calls to Jaffna from EPDP brass or his cronies from Colomobo…they can find who is behind this stoning

What this DJ try to bring by writing this piece???

Suppose if MURDERPAKSE is in power there would be 100s of bodies on street on this day in Jaffan town

Yes there is a full support for LTTE in Tamil Nadu so what is your problem???

Ask Indian central government to lift the ban on LTTE which is according to DOGGABAYA completely decimated why the hell on earth a ban for a non-existing organization ???

Pity Jayalalitha is back with full vigor… and many headaches are in the pipeline ..

    Cheers

It is absurd tying up this protest to Eelam and Terrorism. This demonstration is because people are agitated over the way the little girl has been abused by babarians. Further, there could have been other such abuses which were supressed with the dictatorial government until 8th. Further, it is also being mentioned that EPDP cadres were involved in this rape.
stoning court houses, attacking policemen cannot be accepted but have to very suspicious the role played by MR cronies Devananda/EPDP in creating an uneasy situation in Jaffna and project an alarming picture there.
DJ as usual wants to paint grim picture and
    missing his master MR.

Dear Dayan seems to be in a mighty hurry to make his paymaster MR as the PM again and will stoop to any level to do that

One thing we cannot count out is that, the protest started by the population could have been hijacked by Mahindas goons there especially the infamous Douglas to get his men attack the police in the hope that the cops retaliate and start a mini riot and say ‘ah koti awa koti awa and use that to get votes !

Poor Dayan seems out of control in spinning yarns these days and its strongly suggested that he takes a few days off writing and do something more beneficial like making love or gardening !

This sort of a protest happened in India when a girl was raped in the bus. What DJ and MR are giving it a LTTE flavour.I cannot understand their reasoning. MR going all out to connect this event with Eaalam and saying that we should protect the Maathrubumi. This has nothing to do with Mathrubumi. I can understand their reasoning if the rapist were Sinhalese or the Army. But here they are protesting against their own men.
I do not agree with this violent protest but these type of violent protest happened in the South too, Remember when a Muslim allegedly sexually harassed a boy, they burnt the shop and MR had the audacity to justify it in his interview with Al jazeera saying it as natural. Then the BBS Gnanasaara speech at Aluthgama and inciting the crowd.

It is the first time(?) that Tamils had protested against a crime committed by Tamils. I found school children of all ethnicities in the North and East protesting PEACEFULLY against this rape which is a good sign.
I think whole country must be alert to rape. It is the responsibility of men and women, boys and girls to protest against this rape. Everyday newspapers report of rape. Rape is endemic in this country whether a Tamil rape a Sinhalese or vice versa, or if the alleged criminal is a Muslim. Justice has to be done. For the victim, the ethnicity of the rapist is immaterial.

The informations coming from Jaffna is telling a new story….

Indeed a political thug group still carrying weapons were trying to release the rapists and murderers by attacking the courts and police station…

Even though Public have captured one rapist and handed him to Police …but after hospitalized this guy managed to escape from the Hospital to Colombo with the help of this thuggish political group how?

Some of these rapists are belong to this political group …favorite of MURDERPAKSE..

But blame goes to Tamils as usual twisted a racial propaganda…

Why this group with 5,000 thugs promoted by MURDERPAKSE still allowed to roam freely ????

DJ is writing armchair story for his MURDERPAKSE

    Dear D. Dayan

These are all good questions. There are various people being blamed for these, I am not sure what it is all about.

Thank you for sharing your concerns. This time we can see whether you are right or wrong.

There are some facts worth sharing : you have obviously access to and have had access to information that the general public does not have and did not have access to.

The former President, Defence Secretary and Armed forces also had access to a great deal of information. One could argue the case that their warnings are not based on racism but based on their experiences in the past. I think this is reasonable: a TNA has publicly stated on live TV that they have not given up the struggle.

    Can we afford to wait?

Mistake was done after Jan. 8th. They did not lock up or shut up

That is right there are others who like to nurse them back and let them

MS & MR are trying to tame them which would never happen.
