Lasantha Wickramatunga , because of his tragic end has become a sort of a martyar among a certain group. But his story is very muddied. Among the things we know, Lasantha used to meet President Rajapakse late in the night, he was well known as the mouth piece of the hated Ranil Wickramasinghe slating Ranil’s opponents ( in the UNP mainly) in a very unfair manner, there are stories that Lasantha’s silence could be bought with money which method was available to many shaddy businessmen. But I invite all those who talk about him to read the articles written by him( or so claimed in his own newspaper-really he was a politicain, one time secretary to Mrs Srima Bandarnayake whose record itself was bad). I would argue that the prose and the ideas in his writings were ordinary. But then what about that so called postumous essay wherein he suggests that he was done-in by the same regime with whom he was dining late in the night? That piece is so different to Lasantha’s other articles in prose as well as concept. It is very clear that this was written by another hand ,after lasantha’s killing. If that is the case why are we being fed a lie that Lasantha was the wise man who wrote about his own death, even hinting at who the killers were? Like many things in Lasantha’s life even the posthumously published prediction of his own killing is a lie. Those who know about these things know that a regular ghost writer now hiding in australia was the author of that essay. Do all these lies, blackmail, spying for India etc make him a deserving hero ?

I do not do this with pleasure because Lasantha is no more…I have to say though that LW was one sided and vicious in his attacks on the Government and troops. He would have been tried for treason along with Ranil even in a Western country for his part in the Athurugiriya fiasco.
I have said it earlier that if ‘the pen is mightier than the sword’ then journalists should wield it with more authority. Lasantha asked for it and he got it.
