By Granville Perera –
Mahindanada Aluthgamage, Minister of sports along with Dr Ramesh Pathirana MP and son of former Education Minister Richard Pathirana representing the government in the Wadapitiya television debate on Derana TV in the evening of December 03, 2014 walked out of a live programme after a telephone caller questioned Aluthgamage on his integrity and the charges of bribery and corruption leveled against him. The caller was referring to the bribery charge made by his estranged wife to the bribery commission, which the caller claimed was not investigated. Without responding to the charges, Mahindananda went on a verbal barrage and calling the caller a beggar, and abusing the media network that is owned by the daughter of a prominent minister and the campaign manager of the Mahinda Rajapaksa re-election media strategy.
The Minister, in his arrogance probably felt that he had the right to criticize the Derana network for entertaining a phone call from an opposition phone-in participant who was questioning Aluthgamage’s conduct as a prominent member of the United Peoples Freedom Alliance, the current ruling party in Sri Lanka. In his uncontrolled verbal abuse, the minister went to the extent of accusing the network of having a pact with the opposition United National Party. He wanted the network to change its logo to the elephant symbol, (the party symbol of the opposition united national party) as the TV network’s logo. He threatened the caller with legal action for questioning him on his integrity. What Aluthgamage failed to understand is that as a people’s representative, he is answerable to the people – in a real democracy. Is this a sign of the Government members panicking at the thought of an opposition victory where they could be brought to justice?
Like many members of the ruling party, there have been serious allegations of corruption levelled against Sri Lanka cricket and other sports bodies in Sri Lanka, that come under Minister Aluthgamage’s purview. Further, serious charges of soliciting sex from female cricket players were levelled at senior officials of Sri Lanka cricket. Investigations in to these have never seen the light of day.
Aluthgamage’s behaviour is typical of the current political arrogance of the ruling party members. He went on to say that the current government had issued the broadcast license to the Derena Television Network; hence they should not entertain any criticism against the government or any of its members. What Aluthgamage must be assuming is that broadcast frequencies of the nation are the
Private property of the ruling party. What a sad state of affairs for independent media.
It was indeed disgusting to see a supposedly educated member of parliament, who claims to be a product of one of the most leading and distinguished schools in Colombo showing his arrogance and intimidating independent media, or supposedly independent media. Unfortunately, the government of the day has managed to intimidate the entire media landscape in to submission. This is mainly because of the huge advertising budget that is controlled by the government, which belongs to the state lotteries board, state insurance companies, banks, and other state advertisers. Further, they are also able to control what goes on air in the private media through the intimidation of the corporate sector, thereby ensuring that criticism of the government is non-existent. Further, a number of journalists have been killed, many physically attacked and hundreds driven in to exile. The Sirasa TV network and the Siyata TV network were set on fire, and up to date, no inquiry has been conducted and no one has been arrested for the violence.
The tragedy with the Sri Lankan private media, especially the electronic ones is that they are controlled by business interest’s that have huge non media related contracts with the government. Any criticism of the government or its representatives will spell disaster to their business interests and state contracts.
The need for independent media is the priority of the hour that would not be controlled by other business interest. Successive governments blatantly control the state media, which is supposed to be the public service media. Government stooges who have absolutely no professional experience or expertise are employed to manage important positions in these institutions. This ensures that only the state voice is heard and nothing else.
The blatant abuse of the Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation, the Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation and the independent Television Network by the government is a disgrace to broadcasting norms. The public television networks are taken over and used as the ruling party’s network by appointing Government stooges as heads of these institutions. There are radio and television programmes that abuse basic broadcasting ethics on a daily basis. In the Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporations, the Chairman goes on air every morning and hurls abuse and filth on anyone who has dared to criticize the government or its policies. Nowhere in the world, not even in the most despotic states would a chairman of a media institution go on air on a daily basis, hurl abuse and use raw filth on a national network. Regretfully, no one has taken this up in the courts of law; probably knowing the justice one would receive from a flawed justice system.
As part of President Rajapaksa’s election campaign, all heads of media intuitions who were part of his election campaign in 2010 have been re-appointed to take charge of the presidents 2015 election campaign. Their constant theme is foreign conspiracy, NGO dollars and traitors of the nation. Thus is the state of business in the “Miracle of Asia”

This guy whether he is guilty or not has assets worth well over 500 million as his estranged wife has produced documentation to confirm his net worth. How did he amass such wealth when he was just an insurance agent in his start up job. His claims of family wealth cannot be substantiated. His parents are probably just above average. If he had such wealth, it is unlikely that he would have married a simple sales gir; from a SINGER showroom. I understand that he has now trapped the estranged wife of Duminda Dissanayake and the current PM’s daughter. So, he is probably investing his …. wisely in a political family so that he is guaranteed of returning from the Nawalapitiya electorate. I am not sure what is in store for him as PM Jayarane’s son who helped to import the largest drug haul in Sri Lanka himself has huge political ambitions. Wonder where all these fellows would be. I am waiting to see moonakachal wattiamma, jarawansa, and company on the streets. Please pray that my humble wish would be granted by all the gods

The stallion or stud of the United National Party is now accused of making the provocative call. Is this a set-up tarnish the image of the growing popularity of the opposition or was it really made by the accused? Even if it was the UNP parliamentarian, it would be interesting to learn from legal experts as to the legal requirements for callers in phone-in programmes to identify themselves. In a country where criticism is not tolerated, especially when it comes to election times with white vans and vigilante groups, what protection does the innocent have in engaging in discussions with political thugs?

What a shame for that educational institute which have given statesmen like JRJ to come down to this low and under Rajapaksa regime this is how a peoples representative or what we call law makers are behaving?

Although excellent written, all CT readers are aware of this media propaganda for years now. Reading behind a proxy makes us an incestuous community and combined with the effects of a self-fulfilled prophecy an easy victory lies up for grabs early next month!
Unfortunately in real life, hardly anyone supporting MR knows how to access this information and as such for them this knowledge is non-existing. Instead, they are bombarded with propaganda of international conspiracies. The irony of it being that MR and his goons are accusing this website (and plenty of others) as a forum for diaspora (did anyone do any research about who is reading CT?)
If you (yes you!) are serious about defeating MR, then close your laptop, take the bus (or airplane) and go to a random rural location in Sri Lanka and start talking to the people about these things. And if you decide not to do that, accept the fact that this country soon belongs to one family, just like Philippines, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, Russia and many (most?) other countries nowadays are run by people that like to look at themselves in the mirror most of the day.
We are all to blame for this!

It does not augur well for media freedom that the program host felt compelled to apologize so profusely. The minister did not use the opportunity available to calmly inform the caller, that such allegations were made by his estranged spouse; that a defence was submitted to the concerned authority; and that he was exonerated by such authority.
We all know of course that it would have been a miracle if he as a Minister was found guilty. But that’s another discussion!
It is a mystery why the minister had used the past tense about his ancestral wealth throughout the tirade. Did it reveal the minister’s attempt through corruption to replenish exhausted resources? Nevertheless, unexhausted ancestral wealth, even if confirmed, is no guarantee that Ministers of Government will not use power to enrich themselves.
All in all the Minister looked pathetic in front of the cameras and microphones. Shame.

It was the most pathetic site I have seen on Sri Lanka TV when Chatura Alwis was bending over backwards and apologising to this scoundrel. Chatura or Derana would not have know that the caller would have asked about his corruption charges, and it was Mahindananda who started questioning the caller and dragged it on while accusing Derena of entertaining an opposition members telephone call. Why should a TV network apologise for questioning a public representative of corruption charges leveled against him by his own wife. It now turns out that the oppositions’ gigolo has made this call. I wonder why he should be sued for something that his wife had declared in court. I await the Chief Justice’s verdict on this and I am afraid it would be the same as the 3rd term

Mahindananda Aluthgamage’s father was a timber merchant like so many other timber merchants in the District and was not a wealthy Landed Proprietor as claimed by the Minister that they owned thousands of acres of land. Besides after ’71 no one individual or family had more than 50 acres to own. If as claimed he was born to a rich family there would not have been the need to secure employment at Ceylinco Company for a salary of Rs. 400 and to travel by bike.
As for Dr. Ramesh Pathirana he did not have the sufficient marks to enter Peradeniya University as the Registrar objected. Thereafter the father Richard Pathirana being a Minister then, got the Registrar Kumarage removed and got his son admitted on the sly. This is how all these buggers boast of synthetic qualifications and riches they never had just like their leader MR.

In the mid sixties, I was short of few marks to enter the engineering faculty in Sri Lanka. Just because I got few marks less, should I be condemned as a failure and prevent my carrier and ambitions? Only reds, idiots and hypocrites would read it as anti social behavior.
‘Matara Sunil’ shouldn’t have gone round the bush. Ramanayake should have come to that powwow in Derana and highlighted the contents of that petition of Aluthgamage’s wife to court directly by name. By watching the comments made by Mr. Anura Kumara Dissanayake and the drama in relation to a parliamentarian named Mahindananda I wish to contribute my two cents worth. Prior to my leaving Sri Lanka in late 1980s, I lived in the city of Kurunegala. During that period I associated with Mr. Chatura Jayawardene who was the Manager of The Finance Company Kurunegala branch. That friendship led me to introduce Mr.Chatura Jayawardenane to The Lions Club of Kurunegala. I also had a substantial investment in The Finance company through Chatura. In return Chatura had helped me in numerous occasions by sponsoring my Lions clubs Socials until I became the District Governor of Lions Clubs International District 306B in 1988/89. During that period I had the opportunity of meeting one of Chatura’s assistants by the name of Mahindananda. I have good experience in associating with people of high society, Though it is not my intention to bring discredit to this person Mahindanada I must say that this person never fit in to the circle of a family of a multimillionaire as he claims to be. He was a man living away from his family working on a poor salary. I was his wife Asha’s first employer. Asha worked as a sales assistant in my Kurunegala store. If I remember correct I paid Asha around Rs.600.00 a month during that period. She was a good person loyal to her work. I wish Asha and her children all the success in their future.
